That's a weird coincidence; I just forged some WW1 anchor chain wrought into a billet to do exactly the same thing! Love the way wrought etches out, and your knife certainly shows its beauty.
Thank you for the tip on designing the knife around the handle when using natural materials! I've forged knives with intent on using antler for handles but end up not using them because they just don't look right with the shape of the blade.
I have always gotten a kick out of the fact that someone who makes such beautiful knives carries a Mora! I once asked a friend of mine, who was a custom pistolsmith, why he carried a Glock. He said he couldn't afford his own work!
I really enjoy your videos bro not ashamed to admit your faults even when there are none lol you do beautiful work sincerely. I to make knives none as nice as yours but I try to do the best I can with not many tools but they look ok. You gonna go far man thanks for your videos
Antler is very fun working with! There is a lot of difference between different sorts of antler. Deer and raindeer almost melts when being worked while elk is harder than most woods I've worked with.

Thats a damn nice blade. I just built a coal forge and im going to start forging in the next few weekends. Looking forward to learning how to forge and make my own stuff.
Ive been watching a lot of knife making channels. By far yours is my favorite. You’re entertaining and always explain your process very well. I like that you show your mistakes and how to correct them. I’m in the process of building my first knife. It’s been a process lol. All I have is a fire pit for a forge, a stump for an anvil, and basic hand tools for grinding and such. I got the blade forged and roughed in. Needs to have a final shape and the bevels ground in. I’m building the handle out of scrap oak I have in my garage. I forged the blade out of a lawnmower blade. What can I do to prevent rust?
That is a really nice looking blade, also... to prevent it from rusting before it gets shipped, give it a coat of Petroleum Jelly and wrap it with cling film. And yeah... Antler really stinks when you drill it out, makes for a really nice handle however Finally Congrats on winning the Giveaway Justin :)
It may be a link to a WWII anchor chain, but considering that each link (depending on the class of battleship) can weigh reportedly 120 to 220 lbs each, it's only a fragment of one. Cool blade, great work.
Yeah it was a section of chain from the carrier USS Essex. (At least that's what the guy I got it from told me the guy he got it from said) I talk about it more at the end of the video
@@OldHickoryForge I had one uncle at Pearl who survived the Oklahoma capsizing and another uncle on the USS Cape Gloucester that rescued Australian POW survivors at Nagasaki. I would assume that an Essex class would have a similar size anchor chain to an Iowa-class battleship. Too freaking big for us to be handling with ease.
@@AndyFromBeaverton yeah my supplier also mentioned that it was too small for anchor chain. If it did really come off of the Essex it was either a drag chain or some kind of ballast material. That's why I didn't put "anchor chain" in the title. It was about 2.5" round before I lost so much material trying to make a hammer.
Everytime you drop a video it's something cool as hell. I love the wrought iron. And yes, antler smells like toenails in desperate need of cleaning, I've turned at least a few pens from antler on the trusty lathe. If you're gonna keep working with it, wear a respirator, ot WILL mess your lungs up similar to kaowool without refractory.
I have 4 small 1×1×2 1/2 jelly rolls made from 4 layers, alternating grader blade and leaf spring, the jelly roll is only a couple of wraps and the last half to whoke wraps didnt weld, was thinking of putting them in vinegar then acetone, shove em in a can, add some jackhammer bit for the core, add some 1095 powder to fill the gaps, and make a hammer, will the vineger and acetone let the unwelded parts of the jelly rolls weld?
I Blued and boiled my wrought iron fittings after cleaning and etching in ferric chloride. The boiling converts the red rust into a black "oxidizing" coating. Think rust bluing on guns. It worked for me anyway.
Have you tried using Axe Wax or Wicked Wax on your blades? I live up in Michigan and I've been using Axe Wax and Wicked Wax on my blades and its great stuff!
have a question and keep in mind i have no clue about foraging when forge welding the hard steel between to iron do you use flux between the layers of the two metals ?
This may or may not be helpful but give it a try. I mostly do guns and hot rod/motorcycle stuff but my go to Cleaner/lubricant/protectorant is a 100 year formula it is equal parts of ATF (cant get whale oil anymore) ... Kerosene... Mineral spirits.... Acetone.. to that I add a couple of ounces of pure lanolin and a couple of ounces of amyl acetate (for odor) It penetrates metal and it protects better than anything I have seen and costs almost nothing compared to similar products for sale. I mix it in gallon lots. Nothing I have cleaned or wiped down (with a fairly soaked rag of it) has ever rusted on me. In California where I live that means a quick wipedown every year or so. I am talking guns with literally no finish left on em. Try it. you will use it for everything.
Haha... thanks for the mention, but I'm certainly no where near perfect. Kyle on the other hand... 🤣 The blade looks awesome!
That is one outstanding blade!🔥looks like it came right out of the early 1800’s!
That Bowie is gorgeous! Congrats to the winner.
That is an absolutely beautiful knife, the etch and antler really work together!
Very nice work 👍👍👍

It looks as though the wiring on your power hammer switch box could use some strain reliefs.

Damn, that's perfect!!
I'm really impressed. Thanks for the video.
Neat project!
Very cool knife awesome job
That knife is a beautiful piece! Well done as always John

The most beautiful bowie knife I have ever seen. I took the liberty of copying it. I hope you don't mind. Greetings from Poland.
Outstanding video and beautiful knife John right up to your standards 🤙👊👋
Thats a fine knife you made. Well done.

Very nice job ice job.
Nice build. If you taper the tang, it makes the guard fit up much easier.
Great project as usual!
Beautiful knife.
good job, looks awesome
Thank you for all the good and bad info.
There's always something new to( learn)
Great Vid😇 GOD Bless
Thank you
Strong work. Looks like a great carrier

Wow, what a beautiful Bowie!
that looks amazing man, I've never thought of using chain..
Looks great. I like antler as a handle material, too, but I can't stand the smell as it's drilled.
Marvelous job. Thanks to you.
Great build.
Muy buen trabajo gracias
that's BEAUTIFUL!
You have any videos of a full tang, integrated guard and pomel?
Nice work
Wow, what a cool project!
Should have been a patron last year… god da*n it. That thing is friggin sweet

Great video! Thank you I really enjoyed it.
Awesome knife.
Awesome bowie and pattern
Very nice!
Can we get a multi part in depth Bowie build?
Have you tried using Axe Wax or Wicked Wax on your blades? I live up in Michigan and I've been using Axe Wax and Wicked Wax on my blades and its great stuff!
Very nice bowie
Very nice!!
have a question and keep in mind i have no clue about foraging
when forge welding the hard steel between to iron do you use flux between the layers of the two metals ?
Yes. Just plain ol borax. Same stuff I use always
@@OldHickoryForge thank you very much
How about bees wax for rust protection?
uaau thats fantastic!
How much .would you make that bone handle
wow. That is gogeous.
That is a knife worth of the wild.
Where did u get your press?
nice job

Awesome
Take a few minutes and replace those wire connectors on the power hammer.
I live in Arizona
You should black it with distilled water like they do with guns
Do you mean the wrought iron? What woke distilled water do? I've been looking for a way to bring out the grain of my wrought iron
👍👍👍
What is this dark liquid, can you answer me? 21:11
Ferric chloride.
@@OldHickoryForge
Thank you
I wanted a bowie.
Nothin' to it
Why do you need a power hammer when your arms are stronger?
Stop using oil and use car wax. Works way better then oil.
Hand sanding a blade aint nothing, try hand sanding a whole sailing yacht.
