Check out the new season of Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone 2.0 today by clicking the link - bit.ly/3USFTng #sponsored #COD_Partner #modernwarfare3 #MWII . Making the Ashika Island Katana. We made this Samurai Sword in as traditional methods as possible. The fittings were the only thing made from modern material and we found an interesting way to make those as well. The #katana blade is made from Tamahagane from Japan. This build was created by Ilya Alekseyev and filmed and edited by Matt Stagmer (Stalkertron).

It's a rare thing for us humans to find what we are truly phenomenal at. I love when you do tamahagane, seeing raw material being refined into something so beautiful, as opposed to welding different steels together and welding them

Outstanding work using all those wild ingredients.
I've seen other people try things like this and it often just crumbles and falls apart.
The way Illya puts it together it fits perfectly to the millimeter.

My god the preparation that went into this is unreal: obtaining tamahagane, making the design, traditionally hardening the blade (and showing how it curves downwards first and then upwards), the tsuba... this is amazing!
Speaking of the quenching: did holding the blade still affect the quality of the hardening? I know that usually the blade is moved around to avoid bubbles from forming on the surface, but then again, this is a show piece of course, not intended for battle use XD

I always enjoy watching Ilya at work, but this was truly amazing. Not only did he respectfully marry the ancient with the modern, but he creates a truly beautiful work of art. Matt an Ilya have created a great channel here, and this sword proves that. Well done Ilya and thank you for sharing your insight and knowledge.

this is great and thanks for the info on the second cut during folding. i've seen a dozen samurai sword making programs from nova to here on youtube, but i have to say none of them ever hinted at anything other then cut in half nearly and fold. a center cut was never shown or even hinted at so thanks you taught me better then pbs has on the issue.
