- HELLO EVERYONE! Danny and Niamh here and we are back with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. AND WOAHHHHHHHHH!
This movie was truly amazing, we loved it from start to finish. The creativity that has gone into this series is just outstanding and I don't think we've ever been so hype on the channel! We would love to hear your thoughts, interpretations and theories for the future of the series.

Miles Morales was always going to be Spider-man. Just not our Miles (1610). During The Spot's flashback, you can see that spider 42 was heading toward biting Miles Morales (42) when it was taken by the collideder.
Actually, our Miles (1610) was going to become the Prowler. Thus is hinted at in the first movie. When Miles meets blond Peter (1610) and they spidey-sense each other, Peter's colors are the Spider-Man blue and red. And we see Miles's colors go from green and purple (the Prowler's colors) to match Peter's blue and red. And its hinted at through the way Miles movies. In the first movie he stated he was better atrunning than swinging. Through out both movies we see Miles abilities grow, from watching the other spider-people. Like in the "thread the needle" scene with Qwen. But it's not as natural for him as it is for the other spider-people, who wouldn't have had a mentor to observe.
We even see it in the way Miles (42) moves, as it is much closer to Spiderman's movements instead of the Prowler. He actually does the exact same move when he comes on scene as The Prowler, that Peter does when he comes into his first scene. It becomes of Miles (1610) not moving as Spider-Man like, that he was able to get away from Migual and all the other Spider-people. First because they were anticipating him moving similar to them, which gave Miles the advantage of appearing unpredictable. And second, they kept getting into each other's way during the chase. And thats because they move/think similarly.
And Miles(1610)becoming the Prowler tracks with his behavior and actions in the beginning of the first movie; tagging, trying to get out of the school, sneeking out, ect. Or just the way he looked up to Aaron

Wow, your explanation on how the two different Miles move, Spider-like vs Prowler, makes me appreciate the level of detail put into these movies. Amazing stuff. I hope the same love and care is put into the final movie.
Hobie didn’t give her his watch, he built one - you can actually see him doing it while they’re on their way to meet Miguel. Miles comments on him tearing electronics off the panels, and Hobie tells him he should try making his own watch rather than relying on the Spider Society for it. He’s making one just in case, probably knowing how south things were heading.
And they can't keep their original watches because then Migual could track them (like he did to Peter to find Miles). Which is why Hobie drops his when he quits, and Qwen breaks Ben's
I love how The Miles Prowler has a bit more of a spanish accent and it makes sense if his dad died and he was raised more by his mother. Just love the attention to detail.
This is amazing. Attention to detail is the exact selling point of these movies. I feel like I could rewatch it over and over and always discover something new ❤️

At the beginning when Miles thinks about telling his parents that he is Spiderman he dismisses it by saying "Maybe in another universe"
When he finally gets the courage to tell his mom it actually is in another universe

The Director said that the reveal that Miles is the first anomaly is a meta-commentary on what led to the creation of the first Black Spider-Man. Some fans believe that Miles doesn't deserve his power or belong in the mask.

Thank you for sharing this! My brother is a big comic fan and since I finished this movie he has told me a lot about the discourse around Miles with some fans. (This is like his fav movie of all time)
This makes Miles’ dialogue with Miguel (when he tells him he is an anomaly) hit 10x harder when I watch it back now. ‘Everyone keeps telling me how my story is supposed to go’
And of course the moment when his mum tells him, to never let anyone make him feel like he doesn’t belong.
It genuinely brings a tear to my eye to think about, powerful stuff. I love Miles ❤️
That's why instead of his dad, miles mom is going to die.. Plot twist
And it makes the comment from Stan Lee hit that much more, "Anyone can wear the mask."
One thing you don't realise until after the movie is that Gwen's monologue at the start when she says "I didn't mean to hurt him, but I did" isn't about the first movie, but what's coming in this movie.
Omg yes! I also noticed in editing, that images of Spot and Jeff’s potential death are shown during Gwen’s monologue at the beginning - so cool
When “to be continued” showed up at the end a guy in my theater screening actually yelled out, “WHAT THE F__k?!” 😂

had a terrible sinking feeling seeing Peni appear and realize her deflated dour expression vs how happy and excited she was before meant she had experienced her canon event. Which in the comics was pretty fkn horrifying.

@ovieNight To summarase, in her altverse Uncle Ben and Aunt May are head scientists of an agency which uses mechs to protect their city. Peni becomes the pilot for SP//dr. Uncle Ben develops a superior backup mech if she ever gets overwhelmed in a mission, it has more advanced bio-linking but its hinted this is also because Ben skipped safety features. She meets another girl who tries to develop a friendship with her who ends up becoming the pilot for the new mech, VEN#m.
When an enemy attack does take Peni down the new pilot, Abby Brock, is ordered to deal with it. The VEN#m Mech starts acting autonomously while restraining the pilot with an increasing amount of biomatter tendrils. Aunt May manages to get into the cockpit and tries to override VEN#m manually while Abby desperately begs for help as her body starts getting overwhelmed by the tendrils.
Peni meanwhile gets her second wind and just barely manages to win against the berserking mech despite its superior firepower and tech but when she pries open the hatch, the cockpit is empty. Both Abby and Aunt May are gone, having been assimilated/eaten by VEN#m.

Gwen's universe, in watercolours, *does* reflect her emotional state! How we see her world mirrors her emotions, seen most vividly on her return home.
So so beautiful. My brother pointed out to me (Niamh here btw) that the moment Gwen’s dad announces he won’t be captain anymore, the world turns almost abstract in design. Like she’s trying to form a thought/emotion in response. INSANELY CREATIVE
Miguel isn’t a vampire, he just has a more feral spider derived serum he got his powers from. His fangs are paralytic venom I believe. His “claws” are actually needles that come out of the pads of his fingertips like the kind on spider feet, not extensions of his fingernails.
We don't know for certain that the thing Miguel's injecting himself with is a serum that gives him powers. In Miguel's comics his DNA was spliced with spider DNA in a machine "The Fly"-style, and it was an evil coworker's attempt to kill/disfigure him. The mutations he gained were permanent but relatively stable - he shouldn't have to inject himself with anything. I hope we get a proper backstory for him in the next movie since this movie has created a lot of confusion around him as a character.
Miguel is gene-spliced with spider DNA, so he's actually 50% spider. He has talons on his fingers and toes like many species of spiders have, and it takes a lot of willpower to keep them retracted so as not to accidentally slice things up (they're strong enough to rip through steel). He also has natural, paralytic venom from his fangs that he uses to subdue problematic enemies temporarily. While he lacks spidey-sense and natural wall-sticking like Peter and the others; he has hyper-sensitive hearing, sight, and sense of smell, enhanced strength, and organic spinnerets (like the Toby Macguire Spider-Man).
What Miguel is injecting himself with are nanomachines into his bloodstream to work with his new techno-suit, his new suit you're seeing here is nanomachines projecting onto his skin through his veins. In the past, his Spidey-suit is actually a luchadore costume with a Death's Head he'd wear to Dia de Los Muertos. It was made of unstable molecule fiber (indestructible fabric invented by Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic).
42:17 her reaction during this scene was EVERYONE in those theaters man, what a movie. (lil fun fact I noticed while watching this that I've never noticed before, miles' mom's eye color is different in the other dimension as well. So if you did notice first watch, that's a clue. They put so much detail into things that people don't even notice and that's one of the reasons why I love this film so much.)
That was actually the first thing I noticed but I didn't realize it was a clue. I leaned over to my gf and was like.. wasn't her eyes brown? And she just shrugged

While there is some kind of love triangle but they definitely handled the Miles Gwen Hobie triangle differently than I expected. He definitely seems to want to help her and Miles both so the nature of that whole thing has me curious. But Hobie is definitely the MVP. And if Gwen and Miles don’t end up together I’m flipping tables.
Also an interesting note in a cut scene of Into Spiderverse, Peter taught Miles to not focus on saving the world but to focus on just saving one person.
Also If you notice when Mumbattan was “falling apart” it was one of Spot’s spots. My bet is when Miles and the heroes beats Spot that city will be saved.

I don't think there is even a love triangle, from what I understand Hobie is gay in his comic. His world's Gwen was a cultural icon in the punk scene so he looked up to her, and it'd motivate him to take this other Gwen under his wing. Not to mention that it's extremely punk to let a friend in need crash at your place when the system fails them.
I even knew this was only a part of a continuing story going in but I forgot by the time the movie came out. I didn't mind the cliffhanger, it just sucks that the writers strike was around this time too. So just makes it longer before we get the next part. Not to mention rumblings of how the animators were treated during the creation of this one.

Actually in earth 42 there is a big hint that that version of Miles was supposed to be Spider man. Earlier in the film when Spot talks about taking the earth 42 spider, there is an image of the spider next to a dreadlocked earth-42 Miles from behind before he’s snatched from that universe. The implication is that spider was about to bite that Miles.
CORRECTION: “Braided” Miles not “dreadlocked”.
Woahhhh ok, so if Miles (42) was going to be Spider-Man, would he have been an anomaly???? Or is that canon… but why not Peter Parker (42)? Does that throw the ‘anomaly’ idea out the window?? Interesting 🤔
@@CoyzyMovieNight well MOST of the Spider Men are Peter Parker. But not all (Gwen for example). In earth 42, Peter (if he existed) was probably just a guy like in Gwen’s universe.
Also people point out that purple and green are the colors of Prowler. If you notice in the first movie when our 1610 Miles meets 1610 Blonde Peter Parker when their spider senses “clash”, the background color for Miles is Prowler purple and green and eventually changes to the blue and red Peter always shows in his background.
The suggestion being that 1610 Miles who had a great relationship with his uncle was supposed to become the Prowler. He loved his uncle Aaron, perhaps down the road he finds out about it and takes after him. Maybe when 1610 Peter destroys the collider Uncle Aaron dies and Miles takes up the mantle seeking revenge. Who knows but that path got changed by the spider from earth 42 being pulled in.
Likewise while the 3rd movie hasn’t come out, but perhaps we find out the earth-42 Miles version of Prowler is an anti-hero trying to fight the Sinister Six cartel. He was supposed to have been fighting them as Spider Man (and would have likely defeated them if he had spider powers) but he’s still trying to be the hero as best he can as the Prowler instead. I guess we will find out when Beyond comes out.

So this movie was actually announced as a part one. But sometime before the marketing for it started, they dropped the "Part One" from the title and changed the title of the third film to Beyond. So even though it was announced as a part one, a LOT of people were caught off guard by the ending. I honestly love it, though. Not only does it build a LOT of hype, but you don't really think about the possibility of a cliffhanger ending until you closer to the end of film. Cliffhangers just don't really happen much in film, so it's always a massive surprise when it happens.
Hobie was in the movie for only a few minutes and immediately knew the assignment. Went right to work mentoring Miles and being a Big Brother.

1:03:01 it was just friendship between the two. Hobie let Gwen crash in his dimension because she couldn't go back to hers; her dad still thought she killed her best friend AND it seems like if she went back then her canon event (dad dying) would be set in motion. Hobie gave Gwen a place to stay while she was basically homeless. he's really such a great & kind character.

Here is a breakdown of spider Gwen timeline. She was spider woman for a year before Peter turned himself into a the lizard and he was killed. Then another year went by of animosity between Gwen and her father. After that Gwen got pulled into Miles Morales universe and became over the course of the 2 days the first Spider-Man into the spider-verse film takes place. Then for the next year she went back to her old lonely girl routine until the beginning of Spider-Man across the spider-verse opening scene. Where she would go on to traveling the spider verse with Miguel and the spider society until she finally ran back into miles after the villain the spot showed up.
Gwen has really had a crazy few years… she was just wonderful in this movie!! Thanks for your comment 😊😊

Some little lore insight into a few Spider-People:
Miguel O'Hara (Earth-928)
Miguel O'Hara the Spider-Man of Earth-928 active in the year 2099 as Spider-Man. He made his first debut in Spider-Man 2099 #1 (1992) introducing a possible alternate future reality of Prime Marvel, Earth-616 the Mainline Marvel universe. Within this reality the world was embroiled in a massive civil war between humans and mutants sometime during the Age of Hero's. Following years of fighting, the humans won the war, but suffered tremendous losses. Peter Parker as Spider-Man being one of the hero's killed during this conflict who's legacy would later be carried on by Miguel O'Hara decades later as Spider-Man of 2099.
Hobart Brown (Earth-138)
Hobart Brown the Spider-Man of Earth-138 was a rebellious teenager who fights against the fascist regime of President Ozzy Osborn with his Spider Army made up of everyday people wanting to fight for change. Fun fact in the Mainline Marvel Continuity of Earth-616 Hobart Brown was the original Prowler introduced in 1969. When the Ultimate Universe (Earth-1610) was introduced in 2000 with Ultimate Spider-Man they introduced a new Prowler with Aaron Davis in 2011 along with Miles and his family.
In the Ultimate Universe Aaron Davis is the first Prowler. Miles universe in these films is known as Earth-1610 as well, inspired heavily by the Ultimate Universe from the comics but with a few changes that don't match up with the comics. So to separate Spider-Verse Miles universe from Comics Miles they retconned his Earth to Earth-1610B so they don't overlap with each other.
Jessica Drew (Earth-404)
The Spider-Woman we see in this film is actually a variant of her character from the comics. From being depicted as Black woman to having a more biker themed outfit it's a very interesting design change that works really well as a cool variant of an existing character, like the many variants of Loki. The Jessica Drew of the comics exists on Earth-616 on Marvel's Mainline Universe. She has a long complex history but overtime she became Spider-Woman. Comic Drew also got pregnant as well this being the bases of the pregnant variant we see in this film.
Ben Reilly (Earth-94)
The Ben Reilly we see in this film is also a variant like Spider-Woman but visually he's 100% the same as his Earth-616 counterpart just much more over the top, making fun of the very 1990s edgy comics at the time. Earth-94 is also a fun nod to his first appearance as The Scarlet Spider introduced in 1994. Ben himself is a clone of Peter Parker who dyed his hair blonde and went on to become The Scarlet Spider. Long story but he showed up in the Clone Saga in the 1970s when a villain Cloned Gwen after her death and also Peter Parker. The Peter Clone was "killed" but later returned in the 1990s Clone Saga and given the name Ben Reilly.

Watching you guys brought me back to watching in the theater.
41:30 I always love the somewhat misdirect of this moment. Even the music tells you this is the moment where Miles breaks away from the chase and escapes to go back home. This is the proud moment where he stands tall against Miguel and wins. But then the scene keeps going, and the music turns more ominous. And then we get the reveal of Miles being an anomaly (in Miguel’s eyes). Such an interesting little misdirect in the story.
This movie was sooo good!
2nd best movie of 2023, 2nd best movie of the decade, best spider-man movie ever, best comic book and animated movie of the decade so far!
Since you were wondering, Hobie & Gwen are just friends. Here's my reasoning.
Just on a practical level. If Gwen had had something happen b/w her and Hobie, she would feel guilty about it when she was with Miles. She has an avoidant attachment style when it comes to relationships, and the last thing she would want to do is is bring up a difficult thing like that which might threaten her friendship with Miles. That's just her nature. So there is no way in hell she would have voluntarily brought up Hobie in conversation with Miles, much less say that she "crashed at his place" and that Miles would "love him." If she and Hobie were/are a thing, she would not have wanted Miles to know that Hobie existed *at all*.
But no, she talks up Hobie b/c it never even occurs to her it might make Miles jealous b/c she has never thought of Hobie as anything more than a teammate & friend.
Once we meet Hobie, I could concede that maybe something happened b/w them if a) Their body language had any suggestion whatsoever beyond teammates and friends or if b) Gwen shied away from Hobie b/c Miles was there, feeling uncomfortable the entire time. But neither of those things happened. In those scenes, she and Hobie are friendly, but never even touch nor have a single awkward interaction b/w them suggestive of a once closer physical connection that Gwen is trying to hide. In fact, she doesn't touch Hobie at all during the entire movie. Aside from hugging her dad and giving Pav a shoulder bump, the only person she touches is Miles. And she touches Miles a lot.
If Lord & Miller had wanted you to really think Gwen & Hobie had a relationship, they would not have neglected the body language that told such a story.
As far as the jumper and toothbrush thing. Gwen is basically homeless. Unlike all the other Spiders, she doesn't have a dimension to return to. I'm sure she bounced around from friend to friend when she wasn't staying at Society HQ (a place she probably didn't want to stay at very much after finding out about canon events, how falling in love with Miles was a death sentence, how he could be never be a part of Spider Society, and how she could never see him again.) So she occasionally crashed at Hobie's place. And when you stay overnight, you bring clothes and a toothbrush. (You'll notice she left her jumper in Miles room too. It's kind of a habit of hers.)
Finally, there's a couple of charming bits that a lot of people miss. Hobie instantly recognizes Miles despite never having met him before. This suggests that Gwen has talked about Miles a lot with her friend. So much so that Hobie has nicknames for the both of them. He calls Gwen "Gwendy" and he calls Miles "Peter Pan" after the famous couple from the classic fantasy novel.
Those are just the practical reasons why Hobie & Gwen were never a thing. But the biggest proof, imo, is the Clocktower scene.
On the clocktower Miles asks Gwen how he is different from Hobie. Her answer is the "In every other universe, Gwen Stacy falls for Spider-Man..." speech.
This is Gwen's way of saying that the difference between him and Hobie is that she has feelings for Miles.
But then right afterwards, as she sees Miles taking this as a sign to maybe hold her hand, she has to tell him that when she falls in love with Spider-Man, things "never end well."
By that she means: Gwen Stacy dies. She's afraid to die, so she can't fall in love with Spider-Man.
People forget: Hobie is *also* Spider-Man.

I loved this movie so much in theaters I didn’t got back to watch it because I was scared it wouldn’t stack up to my first watch. I’ve seen it in full over 15 times already and seen probably 50 reactions to it as well. This was by far my favorite reaction. You caught on to much more than I did on my first watch and your reaction at the end was the same way I did in the theater lol

Did you know... Donald Glover is the reason Miles Morales was created? After Toby's Spider-Man, when they were going to reboot, there was an online grassroots campaign to make Donald Glover Spider-Man. He even screen tested for the role. In the end, it went to Andrew Garfield.
But, the online support for Donald was soo huge, that they created Miles in the "Ultimate Universe," that Marvel had at the time -- to make fans happy.
In the story, it was similar to Into the SpiderVerse, where they kill off the Peter Parker in that Universe and have Miles take over, but we still got Peter in the main Marvel Universe.
Later, when they animated Spider-Man (can't remeber the name of the animated show) Donald Glover plays the voice of Miles, when he crosses paths with the main Marvel Peter Spider-Man.
I'm glad that they are keeping Donald's involvement going.

Huffing fumes up until the inevitable radioactive spider nuclear bomb drop of the final installment on one of the best trilogies ever made. Also well done figuring out the wrong dimension twist, tough falling for that twist hook line and sinker... did turn out to be my favorite moment in a cinema. Sometimes being dumb pays off :D

Btw: the whole sequence of Miles Morales being inspired by Donald Glover and created for the comics after he appeared in an episode of Community with a Spider-Man pajama, the push from the fans for him to play him in live action, him appearing in Homecoming as Uncle Aaron in a small cameo, and getting to appear in the spiderverse movies is another beatiful story in of it itself

Fun fact: Spot's new form is nicknamed "The Abyss" by the crew.
His entire body seems to have been destroyed and replaced with dark matter, meaning he may be completely immune to physical attacks of any kind, almost like a god.
He's definetly not the villain of the week anymore.
Spot’s change in form was by far one of my favourite moments of the movie, ‘the abyss’ is a chilling new title for him. I love it!

Beyond the Spider Verse does not have a release date, but before it was removed, the date given by the studio was 2025, very optimistic of them to believe that it will come out this year.
And here is one of those cases, which makes me sad that people who have a reaction channel lose these types of masterpieces in cinema and let alone IMAX, where it is a visual experience to enjoy the work of the artists who worked on this preciousness.
I've already seen it 7 times in the cinema, because I wanted to enjoy something I wouldn't see again in a decade or two. with that level of detail and I wanted to get the most out of it
I totally agree and it does make us sad sometimes to miss out on the cinema experience, but I like to remind myself that the biggest perk of posting our reactions is getting to share them with others and hear their amazing thoughts and opinions. This movie was ANNOUNCED as "Across the Spider-Verse Part 1." All they did was drop the "Part 1" and gave part 2 its own title. I do not understand how ANYONE is surprised by the movie ANNOUNCED as a part one is, in fact, a part one. 🤦♂️

The thing is their really is no right or wrong, good or bad side here, Miles and Miguel are both doing wrong things for a good reason, and they are both understandable. Miguel is willing to sacrifice Miles father to protect billions of people lives and Miles is willing to gamble the fate of his reality to save his father, the way i see it they both have something worth fighting for, thats what makes it this conflict so interesting and well written.
imagine watching that ending in the cinema it was sooo annoying i was looking to my sister like this is gonna end soon they building up to cliffhanger us xD and ban 5 min later xD

Fun fact about Hobie (AKA Spider Punk), while his animation seems chaotic and random at first, there's actually a pattern to it based on his emotions. For example when he's feeling proud of himself, he's the standard red and blue, and when he's interacting with someone he cares about, like Milles, Gwen, and even Mayday, he turns pink!

I think Miles's "canon" event is going to be Miguel somehow and I'm wondering if the averted canon events are causing universe destruction for some other reason than just the canon event aversion. Something with a similar method of operation as the TVA. A "Canon Variance Authority"?
