The live action "Prowler" that was caught in the lobby was Donald Glover, and was in the MCU movie "Spider-Man: Homecoming" - in that movie he mentioned to Spider-Man (Tom Holland) that he had a nephew Miles! Also, Donald Glover pitched himself to Sony to portray a live-action Miles Morales years before Tom Holland was brought into the MCU as Peter Parker. The producers of this film thought bringing Donald into this as a live-action Prowler not only furthered his MCU character, but was also a nod to his pitch to Sony.

    • @Eidlones
      @Eidlones 3 месяца назад +16

Donald Glover is indirectly responsible for the Miles character even being created in the first place. Donald Glover talked about "why not a black Spider-Man?", and Brian Michael Bendis, creator of Miles, saw that and thought that was a good idea, and ran with it.

    • @noodle_fc
      @noodle_fc 3 месяца назад +9

@@Eidlones Not only that, but there was a vocal minority of Spider-Man fans who were _very_ upset at the idea. He’s not a villain, just a natural leader who’s extremely set in his own way, even more so in this version where he lost a daughter. He’s a great antagonist in this one but he’s a valuable ally where it counts. I really hope he circles around.
He’s also had a lot of adventures with OG Spider Man so his line at the end “Your Peter Parker would’ve lived” that little jab at Miles about the spider biting him? That’s a deep cut for Miguel. That was his buddy. I felt that one.

In the Ultimate Universe (6160) comic, Peter and Miles were bitten by mutated spiders from the same lab. In these movies, origins were tweaked so that Miles (1610) was bitten by a spider from a different universe (42). That means the universe (42) with Miles as the Prowler didn't have a Spider-Man. As harsh as Miguel's anomaly speech was, he's kinda right.
Hobie's design was based on punk-rock posters, hence Spider-Punk. Almost everything he said was foreshadowing. ie. Stole bits of tech to make the "watch" for Gwen. Advises Miles to use his whole hand to Venom Blast shields. Even mentions Miles was from Earth-1610.

My first introduction to Spider-Man was in the 80s with "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends" while I have never read the comics and I was only 3 when I first watched it but I didn't really get into him until in the 90s with "Spider-Man: The Animated Series" which is the best Spider-Man to me by far and did crossover with "X-Men: The Animated Series" which I also love and I'm loving "X-Men '97", the revival series on Disney+. I believe the Spider-Verse movies were inspired by Spider-Man: The Animated Series finale, "Spider Wars, Part 1 & 2" him saving the multiverse and him finding his lost love Mary Jane Watson who disappeared in another dimension with Madame Web's help. Of course I love all the live action iterations with Tobey McGuire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland especially "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and definitely love the Spider-Verse movies! I put all them next to Spider-Man: The Animated Series! I hope it gets a revival like the original X-Men series, finishing his story and finding Mary Jane Watson and can't wait for the third Spider-Verse whenever it comes out and hopefully 90s Spider-Man (who is voiced by Christopher Daniel Barnes, who also voiced Prince Eric from "The Little Mermaid" and I actually met him) makes a cameo in it like the others already have in this one! 😊

So glad you had fun with watching this movie! It was a blast to watch in the theater, and I loved your reaction.
If you're still wondering why Miles wound up in the wrong universe -- the Go Home Machine accidentally read the DNA of the spider that bit him, instead of Miles' DNA. Based on that, it sent him to Earth-42 (the spider's home universe).
And I understand it's confusing for Miguel to be talking about a fated tragedy to occur in Miles' life, when he's already had one. But the 'canon' he mentions includes a number of events (both good and bad) which must happen to each and every Spider Hero -- at least, according to Miguel and his theory.
The event which he calls "ASM-90" refers to something that happened in the comics. Police Captain George Stacy (the father of Peter Parker's girlfriend Gwen) was killed saving a child from falling rubble. That happened well after the death of Peter's Uncle Ben, so he suffered through both tragedies. So if Miguel's theory is true, then it's entirely possible that Miles could lose both his uncle and his dad.
However, you're right to question that theory to begin with -- it's got plenty of holes and inconsistencies. And you're not the only one to be creeped out Miguel, and to wonder exactly what he is, and whether he's really a hero. For the record, he's not a vampire, even though some characters think he might be. In the comics for "Spider-Man 2099", Miguel O'Hara's DNA was combined with that of a spider, rather than being bitten by one. Because of that, his physiology and power set is somewhat different from that of the others. In particular, he has claws (which is what he uses to climb walls) and fangs which let him paralyze opponents with venom.

I think the reason Miguel is so against Miles being Spider-Man is because in possibly his cannon universe or another one, Miles is a villain, The Prowler. The was always meant to be the bad guy, until the spider bit him and changed everything. But also because Miguel destroyed that universe he was so happy in, it caused him to become unhinged, so naturally he takes it out on Miles.
On a side note, I’m actually really glad Gwen Stacy got a new lease on life, both in the comics and in these movies, wouldn’t it be cool if Emma Stone would go a cameo as the adult Gwen?

@@gabrielp9646 That's all accurate from Miguel's perspective, but he's clearly wrong. Miles didn't do anything to Mumbattan, there's a long list of indications that the "sinkhole" was created entirely by Spot and had nothing to do with saving the captain. It's highlighted multiple times that Miguel is jumping to conclusions about how the multiverse works - we've seen the effects of being in the wrong universe, but leading to the destruction of a universe? That's a shaky conclusion at best.
If changing canon destroyed a universe, then Miles' universe was already doomed by the spider, as was the universe the spider came from. Both have problems, but still exist, and have existed for a while with no issues.
Also, the whole theming of the movie was focused directly around false dichotomies. You can have your cake and eat it too, if you buy two cakes. It'd be a huge reversal on everything they've done up until now if it turned out Miguel was actually right about how the multiverse works.

@@gabrielp9646 just wanted to posit here, cause wombat's isn't really a fan theory... Watching the movie alone showcases that SPOT is the cause of the tears in the multiverse. Always has been. HE was the one that dragged the spider into miles' universe. He is the one desiring more power so that miles will take him more seriously. And if he hadn't caused the destruction of Alcemax in Mumbattan Singh wouldn't have even been in danger. Which ALREADY calls into question 'outside influences' on canon. Since spot isn't supposed to be there either, Singh shouldn't have died there regardless. Or at the very LEAST Miles corrected that timeline. I do believe both Miguel and Miles are right to a point. Peter parkers do have canon events. But not every spiderman does. Miguel is assuming and doing his best BASED on that assumption. It's understandable but he's most likely got the wrong culprit. Miles does need to learn that some things can't change.
BUT that doesn't mean you don't try. And sometimes it does work out. And wombat is very correct in saying that mile's universe AND tbh universe 42 should BOTH be wiped from the map due to canon breaking as such massive 'mistakes' were made. Yet they exist. Not falling to the chasms of the multiverse. One is doing great and the other is without a spiderman but they still EXIST. The one thing we don't know is why the world Miguel stepped into was wiped. We have his account and Peter B was there... but we already have evidence that trading lives doesn't destroy a universe. So there might be something more or it might be the way Miguel went about it. We don't know. That may come in 3. The POINT is that miles can be correct without miguel being fully wrong. Spider society is trying to do good and doing good. But they are misinformed on some basic level. They know the symptoms and think they know the cause but not fully. besides the spiderverse is VERY open to other canons including the rest of Marvel and the MCU and insomniac games. In which there are OTHER miles. Who's stories are NOT the same as Peter's.
Miguel is an unreliable narrator. Sympathetic, doing his best, but misguided. Miles is ALSO unreliable. He's selfish, narrow minded, but kindhearted. We don't know what the final lessons will be but rest assured that the REAL villain IS Spot. And everyone is just as misguided as Miles in how they treat him as a villain of the week. Spot is worse than Kingpin. Spot is worse than Miles. Spot caused ALL of this and WANTED to run the experiments and then BLAMED IT ALL on Miles. His lack of presence in this movie compared to the setting is VERY telling. It's a facade. Don't underestimate him like everyone else, not just in power... but in intent.

The dimension 42 spider was going to bite dimension 42 Miles. You see it during Gwen’s opening monologue. Dimension 1610 already had a Prowler. We don’t see a universe where Miles is supposed to be the Prowler. Doesn’t mean there isn’t one, but not that we’ve seen so far. Miguel is against Miles for the reason he gave Miles: He blames him for the leaks between the universes and truly believes breaking canon is incredibly dangerous.
I think 42 Prowler may not be a bad guy.

The thing that really resonated with me in this film, and the reason I liked Hobie's rebellious character so much is the way the movie makes a meta-narrative of "canon" representing choice versus destiny in terms of story, and the wider implication of audience expectation versus creative freedom. One of my least favorite tropes in storytelling is giving a character incredible powers to either change their fate or change the timeline at large, and then having the narrative invalidate that character's choices because fate and destiny are deemed more important. It's a way to create drama and subvert some expectations, but stories like that also don't tend to communicate much beyond the idea that again, the character's abilities and choices don't matter in the grand scheme.
And the other part of that is audience expectation of what makes a Spider-Man story "canon." And this is very topical for the character of Miles Morales specifically, because there was a lot of racial backlash both to the Marvel Ultimates comic where Miles debuted, and also to the possibility of the character being played by Donald Glover. "There can't be a black Spider-Man, and if you make one then it's not *canon* ". And while we're on the topic of canonical things not necessarily being good things, the original Gwen Stacy was written to die in the comics because those writers thought she was boring and that Peter would be more interesting paired with MJ, so Gwen's original character got pigeonholed with one of the worst ongoing tropes in comic history. Spider-Gwen is also a subversion of that "canon", giving her character agency and ensuring her story amounts to more than being Spider-Man's man-pain to pave the way for a new girlfriend.
Aside from the clear and harmful tropes in the above, sticking rigidly to established canon can be straight up boring, constantly retreading the same ground with the same characters and familiar character beats, without the opportunity to try new things and make new stories. The Spiderverse films are immensely innovative for more reasons than I could possibly list here, but their commitment to take established stories and characters in new directions is something that puts them leagues ahead of practically every other MCU and superhero property in my mind.

Miles viewpoint is not valid. It's understandable, but not valid. He's acting out of selfishness and willing to risk an entire universe to keep his dad. We've seen what happens in indian spiderman's world. Yes, obviously he'll find a way because he's the protagonist, but given everything we know and also have seen he's acting selfish and delusional. Miguel's is the only valid viewpoint here, given what we know.

Actually, he was originally from the comics in the 80's. He was in a lab trying to recreate the powers of Cloak from Cloak & Dagger. And something went wrong (predictably), and he got "holes". He was working for Kingpin at the time. And he didn't have multi- or inter- dimensional powers, but he could use his holes the way he does here in the early fight with Miles. You punch him in the face, and your own fist comes back at you through a different hole. Stuff like that. I think he was originally intended as pretty much a "joke" character, but it's an original and interesting power set, so he gained some popularity and credibility. He actually predates the Miles Morales character.

So I get you don’t like Miguel but if you take the emotion out of it he is trying to do the right thing as a hero and so is Miles they are just doing it from 2 different perspectives. From Miguel’s view he is trying to save an entire world at the cost of 1 man’s life so very pragmatic, utilitarian (needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few), Miles is trying to save his father and hopes to also save the world at the same time so a very optimistic high risk high reward strategy. Both approaches are heroic yet both can also be viewed an being unheroic, in the case of Miguel he can be viewed as being heartless and cruel as he is not willing to even try to save both, in Miles case he can be viewed as naive and selfish as he is willing to risk the entire world to save his dad (which if it doesn’t work out would mean his father would die anyway) even after being shown what happens when other try to save both. So it’s an interesting take on what you think makes a true hero, in term of the next movie I think they’ll go with the approach that as Miles was never meant to be Spider-Man the rules of “the canon” will not apply to him so much like he mentioned at the start of the movie he will be able to have his cake and eat it to by having 2 cakes as there will be 2 sets of rules: the canon for all other Spider-Men and the canon for Miles

@@celestinomoya4470 her case is slightly different, much like she says in the movie in every other world Gwen Stacey falls in love with Spider-Man and in every other world she dies but the Spider-Man those Gwens fall in love with the majority of the time is a Peter Parker. In Gwens world that canon is inverted from of the canon for most other Spiders as her Peter dies instead of Gwen. More importantly Gwen acts as a proof that canon be different and can change, for example Miles says to Gwen that her dad is also a captain to which Gwen says I know as if resigned to the fact that her dad will also have to die for the canon to remain true however much like how her Gwen/Peter canon is different from other Spiders the “Captain death” canon event has now been removed/changed for her by her dad quitting the force so is no longer the captain who would die in canon. This shows that for Miles the “canon” can be both different from other Spiders and can be changed without needing a Spider to technically save that person. Funnily enough in the comics it was Miles mother that dies and not his dad though neither were police captains.

Miguel isn’t a villain tho, that’s what makes this movie so interesting, because in his point of view, he is doing the heroic thing. He won’t risk for Miles’s dad for millions of lives, because he truly believes that if Miles saves him and prevents the „canon“ event, Miles‘s dimension is gonna cease to exist as well with all the people living in it. I think his mindset and paranoia has a lot to do with his trauma (he also has a very tragic and traumatic backstory & childhood, which you can see in his comics) of losing „his“ family, having his daughter glitch out of existence in his arms and then the whole dimension. He is blaming himself and now he is willing to do everything to never even risk having it happen again.
I really hope we get more backstory of Miguel and maybe a redemption arc?? in the next one, he is such an interesting character.

In real life a few days later on September 11, "9/11", the Twin Towers were destroyed by terrorists crashing jet airplanes into them. The people marketing the Spiderman movie stopped the trailer from showing, and tried to remove any media images of it. Miguel is definitely not a villain. He has just been hurt and has seen first hand the consequences of his actions. He has hardened himself out of necessity. Miles is acting on emotion and frankly being selfish. He doesn't want to hear the reality of the situation. He simply heard that his father may (probably will) die and is ignoring the big picture. Of course in the movie Miles is the protagonist, and Miguel is intentionally made out to seem like a villain. But from a realistic perspective, Miles is kind of the real villain. He, like The Kingpin in the first movie, is tampering with an entire reality purely for selfish gains. And the end of this movie shows that Miles was always on a knife edge from becoming a literal super villain.

But you see in Pavitr Prabhakar's world Miles' actions nearly destroy the universe. That is why this is such a great movie though, the motivations for heroes and villains makes sense and are relatable.
I doubt there is another Miguel in a cage as that would break the 'prime directive' of the Spider society set up by Miguel himself. Every universe needs its proper Spiderman. I expect either a merging of worlds, as 'good Miles' is a product of 2 universes and will somehow entwine the 2, or a more typical ending where he saves his dad and shows that breaking a canon event is not a guaranteed universe collapse.

It varies by artist but a lot of comics are modern like this and some still do more of a throw back.

Certainly everybody saw the Lizard. In court, the tricky part would be proving the Lizard was Peter.

Am I the only one who found the ending of this movie really satisfying? Of course you want to know what happens next, but this isn't half a movie. This is *_Gwen's_* movie.
It starts and ends with her estrangement from and reconciliation with her father. She lays it out in the opening and closing narration! "I fucked up, I hurt my friend. I thought I didn't have a choice, but Miles changed that _('we're supposed to be the good guys'_ and _'it's all possible')._ Now I've formed my band and I'm going to fix things."
What a great story! What a fantastic character arc! What a perfect place for "to be continued"!

100.. Hate that they make the Mexican look like a fucking villain. Then completely black wash Miles when Ricans mixed with black have features of both and not just features of African. They killed off Peter Parker just to get us all to this point. Luckily us white people have the original Peter still. Lol. crazy. Either way I live all of them and they bring things we need to the table

In a truly infinite multiverse there is no such thing as a canon event. Every permutation is equally valid.

Tell doctor strange that after he had to come to terms with the concept of a universal constant. Aka cannon event
