      @@PaintHQ Thanks Pete - I was pretty shocked to see the air filter completely caked with paint after less than a litre of paint had gone through - I have a 2 rooms of fitted shelving to get through and am spending as much time cleaning the machine as I am spraying 😅 It's a lot of woodwork, maybe 50 four foot shelves... They all got a good dose of Farrow and Ball primer undercoat after knotting and then a couple of thinned topcoats of Little Green Intelligent Satin after a rub down.
      There's significantly less paint on the work than there would be if I had brushed 3 coats on, and I'm not adding any more. I thought about it, but the client's happy enough.
      Not convinced I'll be doing much more spraying - I reckon it's the future, but it's just such a palaver!

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  3 года назад

      Hey Mick.. the FC3500 is a great machine for the money.. They are a little tricky to perfect, getting the right mix of air and material.. with the extra air (XVLP), they’re able to atomise thicker materials Vs the restricted pressure of HVLP.. the trade off is the air can blow the masking off.. like I say a great machine to have, especially the ability to spray small quantities of material.. but I’d still choose to spray doors, trim with airless (fine finish tips). Even spindles, you can master, moving quick with a small tip.. just the masking is crucial but even with XVLP / HVLP the areas still need masking, but the speed you can go slower and with that you’ve got a bit more control.. hope that helps, keep in touch my friend and let me know if I can help guide you further.. regards Pete 🎨

      Thank you buddy 👏 Yeah go for it 💯 The advantage of XVLP is with extra air, decorative / architectural paints should go through it.. Caparol NAST paints you’ll have no problem at all.. With higher viscosity paints, you may need to up the air to break up and atomise the material.. I just try to keep the air as low as I possibly can get away with to achieve a wetter finish that levels out nicely, especially the final coat.. a paint conditioning product called Floetrol can help ease waterborne paints.. Great video. Recently purchased the 3500 as a DIYer. Struggling to get such a clean and consistent spray pattern like yours. Gun runs great for 5 minutes and then maybe spits every now and then with a different pattern / volume for another minute then back to better pattern. Will give the extended turbine heating a try. Normally give it 2-3 minutes but on a cold day it's probably not enough.

      Thanks for watching and your feedback, I really do appreciate the support.. I think I know what you’re referring to and it can be frustrating. That can happen when the material is too low in viscosity (could be thinned too much). If it’s the same as what you’re experiencing, I have that problem with clear lacquer. It’s the same as what happens when putting water through the machine when cleaning. It will pulse because it can’t build adequate pressure in the cup.. I find It can also happen if the cup is too full.. Hope this helps.. Keep in touch my friend.. Regards Pete.

    Hi, Pete.
    Many thanks for all the quality videos and simple advice. I carry out property maintenance and every now and then have to do a few smaller jobs that might benefit from a sprayer, like built in cupboards/bookshelves and small room trim and walls. I don't want a complicated setup and have narrowed it down to either the Graco Ultra or Wagner 3500. I already have a cheaper Wagner hvlp and hate the mess the turbine makes when spraying in the workshop, and favour the Graco for that reason.I would dearly loved to be pushed over the edge by a professional with experience with both. What would you recommend?
    Many thanks for your time!

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  2 года назад +2

      Hey Edward, thanks for reaching out, happy to give my opinion if it can help.. Apologies if it’s something you already know, but just to clarify the Wagner 3500 and Graco handheld, whilst both handheld, they’re different technologies.. the Wagner is HVLP (or XVLP) is based on air but low pressure to atomise the paint and the Graco is airless (no air but much higher pressure).. Airless is much easier to master, choosing the right tip and pressure and you’re soon spraying.. HVLP / XVLP is getting the balance between viscosity (you’ll have to thin most decorative coatings), fluid flow and air.. I find a big frustration with XVLP (Wagner 3500), is the ‘extra’ air can easily blow your masking off, then the amount of air can cause ‘orange peel’ or a rough finish if you’re not getting the balance right.. Plus you mention spraying the odd wall, so yeah definitely airless is the way to go.. I am a fan of the Graco Handheld, it’s been invaluable to me on the job site.. so yeah I’d go for this out of the 2.. however it’s important to understand these machines are designed for small projects and touch ups.. if funds allow, check out a GXFF, you’ll get the true airless experience.. perfect for fine finish spraying and can spray emulsion no problem if required.. here’s a link so you can see what I mean.. www.sprayman.co.uk/product/graco-gxff
      Hope this helps my friend, keep in touch, I’m happy to help in future all I can.. regards Pete

    Been watching your channel for a while.Brilliant may I say.Bought the 5000 last year for a job with the nast head and pu satin after looking to getting into spraying.So happy I did.Faster.less muscle fatigue and superior results.Was scepticle at first with time for masking up for overspray but can say it's so much faster than brush and roller.The only downside to the 5000 is DONT use flimsy polythene to cover any area near the project as it blows the dried paint onto the newly painted surface.Newbie mistake.Keep up the good videos lad.Have you tried spraying kolorbond through the machine or will it be better through an HVLP?

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  2 года назад +3

      Hi Richard, really appreciate your comment and kind words of support.. So glad to hear you’ve taken the step into spraying and had success.. yeah the FC5000 is a great machine, especially with the NAST head and the Caprarol system, the results really are excellent.. very good point about the plastic, you can’t comprehend how much ‘extra‘ air is blown out the machine.. not great for blowing the masking.. but great for atomising higher viscosity materials.. it’s a trade off though, the extra air with not enough material flow can cause a dry / rough finish.. whilst in theory the FC5000 could spray Kolorbond, I feel the low viscosity consistency could cause a stop/start spray scenario.. have you noticed when flushing with water when cleaning, the spray pulses (stops/starts)?.. it’s because the material is so thin it causes a problem pressurising the pot.. I didn’t want to take that risk with Kolorbond.. Have you seen this video?
      uPVC Door Spraying | How to Spray PVC ruclips.net/video/Awuc1q4bPQQ/видео.html
      The conventional HVLP setup with the regulated pressure cup is just a joy to spray with.. no concerns of pulsing, you can spray at any angle and the air from the compressor is actually not that high to atomise the material..
      Great to have you contributing to the channel.. ask questions or provide feedback anytime and I’ll always get back to you.. please subscribe if you’ve not all ready.. take care and keep in touch my friend.. regards Pete 🎨💯

I found it was creating small splat spots of paint on edges of spray pattern. Any help would be appreciated. I've only used the HEA Wagner for spraying emulsion mist coats and top coats, so this is new for me.

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  2 года назад

      Hello my friend, thanks for the feedback.. I’ve not experienced spraying Dulux Satin Wood, but I will do my very best to help.. before any dilution, try warming the paint.. using very hot water in a bowl or pot and submerge the metal spray pot containing the paint.. let it sit for about 20 minutes, warning the paint like this is a legitimate way of lowering the paint viscosity.. Also run the turbine on speed ten for about 10 minutes (not spraying anything, take the head off).. this is to warn the air.. from the symptoms you describe, the heavy splutters is the paint not atomising.. try lowering the fluid flow a touch and increasing the air.. if warming the paint is still not helping, next try adding a splash of Floetrol, it’s a paint conditioner.. it’s a well known product used for when brushing paint to help levelling out, it can help with paint flow when spraying.. last resort would be to then add a splash of water.. just a splash.. also, just bear in mind that some products don’t spray well (even airless), spraying XVKP is great but can be tricky.. for straight out the can spraying, Caparol NAST products are great 👍 ..Keep in touch and let me know how you get on.. regards Pete

    Hi Pete, I use the haftprimer all the time but usually follow with johnos aqua guard when it comes to satin finish. I was thinking of trying this the other day when I ordered a 10L primer. My question is, have you used the pu gloss from caparol at all? I've never sprayed any gloss only rolled it on. Usually it's johnos aqua gloss as I've found that's got the most sheen but it kackers your brushes up. I know there's tikkurila gloss and never tried that either. What's your opinion buddy. Thanks

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  Год назад

      Hey buddy, good question.. I was always a fan of Johnos Aqua in my brush / roller days.. the alkyd ‘hybrid’ paints (I believe) will have the higher sheen for a waterborne.. 90%.. Tikkurila Helmi is acrylic based and 80%, I’ve not used the Caparol PU-Gloss but I’m thinking it will be similar to Helmi.. I did very much rate Teknos Futura Aqua 90, again an alkyd.. I was very impressed with the way it performed spraying and the high sheen 👌

    Hey Pete hope you're well. Iv'e been busy using my sprayers! Had some great results with all your tips on the airless you legend! Been using the Q5 the last few day. I'm finding I'm thinning the primer a lot to get between 30-40 secs as recommend by manual. I'm using a 1.8 cap, current ratio is 16 oz primer to 7 oz water, that's 40 secs through the viscosity cup! Do you think i need to thin as much with the 1.8 cap? Seems like I'm having to do more coats because the paint has been thinned so much. Results have been good though. Haven't sprayed a top coat yet, people are saying a 1.5 cap for top coats?

      Hey buddy, really good to hear from you and great news you’re having success.. I’m really pleased I’ve been able to help.. yeah that sounds like a lot of thinning.. what’s the product(s) you’re spraying.. I tend to stick to a 1.5 (but I’m spraying low viscosity materials).. I have moved up to a 1.8 but do prefer the 1.5.. I think my regulated pressure pot helps, allowing dedicated air the gun.. have you tried the product first without thinning?.. before thinning, my next tactic is to warm the material.. see if you can submerge your cup in hot / off the boil water.. ‘bain Marie’ style 😆 ..next id add a good drop of Floetrol (it’s a paint conditioner, traditionally used to help brushed paint level out).. lastly I’d ease with a drop of water, but I’d wouldn’t really want to add ‘too much’.. hope this helps a little my friend.. keep in touch, and let mr know what you’re looking to spray 👌👍😆 ..regards Pete

    Hello brother Peter, i have a question for you, is the Finefinish sprayhead the same as the NAST ???? Greetings from Holland ✌✌✌

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  3 года назад +2

      Hey brother 👊 Great to hear from you 🇳🇱👏💯 ..That’s a very good question.. I believe the air horns are different on the blue NAST head, compared to the brown Finefinish. Resulting in a narrower squashed fan. The NAST head is designed to work with the Caparol NAST system of paint to mean reduced overspray / fog.. in my opinion, if you had the brown Finefinish head, I wouldn’t pay for the additional NAST head.. I would however give the Caparol NAST haftprimer and PU-Satin a go, and fire it through the brown head if that’s what you had.. or use it with any HVLP sprayer 👍👏 Hope that helps my friend.. Regards Pete 👊 .. 🇳🇱👏👏👏

    Hello mate lovely work that's the caparol pu satin like to spray? Is it a good finished and what would you recommend?

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  Год назад +1

      Hey Aaron.. I’d choose the NAST version of the PU-Satin, if looking to spray HVLP or XVLP.. it’s viscosity is lower, designed to spray straight out the can.. I do rate Caparol Haftprimer and PU topcoat.. buy the satin is a little flat in sheen.. my current go to is AkzoNobel, WP136 primer and enamel topcoat.. again both are spray only, no thinning required.. also sprays airless with .008 tips 900 psi with Graco FF LP tips..
      WP136 Water Based Primer / Edge Sealer
      holmanpaints.co.uk/interior-wood/171-akzo-nobel-WP136-highbuild-waterbased-primer-edge-sealer.html
      AkzoNobel Aqualit (Supercryl) Waterborne Enamel Topcoat
      holmanpaints.co.uk/interior-wood/169-akzo-nobel-aqualit-waterborne-enamel-topcoat.html
      ..you get a beautiful cabinet like satin finish ..and very cost effective, especially in 5 litre cans..
      Comes in white, then if needing tinting both primer and top coat can be colour matched off any colour chart..
      Also in a clear lacquer, coats oak beautifully.. it’s a sanding sealer, just denib the first 1 or 2 coats of grain raise.. dries super quick, I spray 3 or 4 coats depending on the amount of grain fill..
      holmanpaints.co.uk/interior-wood/191-1705-aqualit-supercryl-water-based-wood-lacquer.html#/1872-size-1l/1952-finish-30_satin

      Thanks for watching my friend.. I do like the XVLP units and the theory behind them for fine finish HVLP style spraying.. I’m afraid it’s just not a feasible option for spraying walls.. whilst there’s a ‘wall spraying’ head attachment (I have tried it), it’s not up to the job spraying emulsions / or any thicker materials.. to spray emulsions / walls I recommend airless, in fact airless is far easier to setup and atomise paint Vs HVLP / XVLP and is quicker, much more suited for site work too 👍 hope this helps.. happy to help any way I can 🙏 regards Pete

    Hiya mate how much do you have to water down joncryl from Johnston to go through a 3500. Thanks

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  3 года назад

      Hi Brian.. Those who know me will vouch that (during my brush / roller days 😊) For an off the shelf product (from Brewers), I’ve always spoke highly about the Johnstones water based paints, especially the Aqua undercoat and Satin.. However, for me it doesn’t spray nice.. With the spraying of any trim paints, I only add water as a last resort.. It will go through XVLP with more air, but before adding any water try a splash of Floetrol paint conditioner.. And warm your paint 👍 ..if you don’t have your own method for warming paint, you could buy a screw on lid for the tin, (they don’t cost much).. Then submerge just below the lid in water that’s just boiled.. Warming decorative paint will lower the viscosity and help XVLP spraying massively... With Caparol NAST paint, you won’t have that problem. It will spray out the tin 👍 Sorry for long answer.. hope some of it helps my friend 😆 Pete

    Why did you select the NAST head? Is it a special purpose head for a particular paint type?

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  2 года назад +1

      Hello my friend.. great question.. The NAST head was developed and designed to be used with Caparol NAST paints (haftprimer primer and PU-Satin top coat), this NAST combination is to significantly reduce / eliminate fog and overspray.. the NAST head can still spray other paints with potentially less fog / overspray.. but my opinion is if you already had the brown fine finish head, that too produces excellent results.. especially with Caparol NAST paints 👍👌😆 ..Keep in touch, I’m happy to help if I can 👍 Regards Pete 🎨💯

    Hi great video, how come you do the middlecoat dryer please? Got the 3500 and still trying to get a good consistent finish.

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  3 года назад

      Hey Steve, thanks for the feedback.. it’s purely to speed up the process. I’m not too concerned about the middle coat. For me I like to push the boundaries on the final coat.. I still want decent atomisation but I want the material to spray wetter and know that the product will suck in and dry nice.. biggest tip I could give to get the setup right is to make notes, so you know a starting point and if you could drop a little air and up the material a bit more next time.. Hope this helps.. the 3500 is a great machine.. What product have you struggled with buddy?.. regards Pete

      I usually spray trim Dulux diamond satin and get on well with that but have been try bm advance and pu gloss on a couple of projects and just can’t seem to get a smooth finish. I don’t want to thin paint much more than around 8% and warming paint and head before spraying. Fine head. I just can’t seem to work out whether I should be going multiple light coats or 1 heavy. Sometimes it comes out ok in parts but I but like the other comment seems to vary in and off throughout other jobs even though trying to keep paint warm and adjusting

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  3 года назад

      Hey Steve, just answered a similar question 😊 .. A constant stop start could happen if the cup cannot build pressure.. If the material is too thin (low viscosity), or perhaps cup too full.. This happens when spraying water / like the clean up.. I know it’s frustrating.. BM Advance is a lovely paint, like I find with spraying any product, or any system including airless, if the coat is too light an application it’s a rougher finish.. BM Advance will level off and pull in lovely.. Yeah don’t thin too much, because you’re spraying a BM product, you could try BM Extender.. Floetrol is another paint conditioner you can add to ease the flow.. In conjunction with heating the paint and turbine 👍 ..Really do hope this helps.. keep in touch my friend.. regards Pete.

    • @steves2123
      @steves2123 3 года назад +1

      Hi, What are your thoughts on thinning pu as I believe officially 5% which I’ve been trying to stick to but wondered if 10-12% would cause much harm to the paint which is what I tend to see others do and probably would help some of my issues around atomisation. Also do you usually use owetrol or similar as wondering if that’s better than water in terms of needing less? Thanks again

    • @PaintHQ
      @PaintHQ  3 года назад +1

      Sorry Steve I hit send by accident, hope you get this reply in full... I do a ‘worm test’ 😊 ..You’ll see me in my videos where I stir the paint, then lift the stirrer out and swirl the paint as it runs off the stick.. for the right viscosity for XVLP (and HVLP), the ‘worm’ should disappear pretty instantly.. I’d then warm the paint first before anything else, unless it needs a lot of work.. then add Floetrol or Benjamin Moore Extender.. then if it still needs some work, I’d add 5% water.. last resort for me would be to up the water to 10%.. if I’m having to thin that much, I’d rather switch to Airless spraying and spray un-thinned... let me know if you get the full reply.. I’ll help you all I can 👍 Regards Pete
