I think Bernie is not someone who retaliates. With the clothes before performing Pinball Wizard, it's one of my favorite parts because I believe it shows a dynamic between Bernie and Elton that all kinds of relationships should have-a empathy and understanding of the other's nature. When Elton yelled at Bernie, he didn't retaliate. Elton caught himself, held Bernie's hand and genuinely said with his heart, "Sorry" and Bernie says, "I know." Bernie's understands the craziness of what Elton has been doing to himself and is genuinely concerned. He's never mad at him. That is a deep understanding of the underlying issues mixed with unconditional love that many of us fail to give. It's so beautiful.

The second time i saw the movie i noticed its not a “friendship goals” moment, look at Bernie’s expression, its like he’s used to Elton getting mad at him for no good reasons, and when Bernie replies “yep” its like “why you apologize for something that you will keep doing?” Idk, just my point of view

But yeah I had a similar situation and it's really not pretty, def nos friendship goals. You don't take it seriously but it's still a mistreatment and a disregard. Although in this case Elton asked for forgiveness it is not known how many times Bernie had to endure those scenes and in how many of them Elton realized that he was shouting at his best friend for things that had nothing to do with him. Elton was lucky that he got someone with Bernie's patience, understanding and intelligence: having moved away from his life for a while was possibly what saved the friendship, he was intelligent and left while there was still some friendship and minimal respect. ANYWAYS, YES, this scene is not "friendship goals" (that would be to have a completely healthy friendship) but it is still sweet, it is what led them to maintain friendship until today. The movie is not literal, as I said we do not know how many times and how this happened but this scene shows why their friendship survived despite everything. The scene summarizes in two words the repentance of Elton and the great empathy of Bernie: without the "sorry" and without the "i know" their friendship was not going to be more than an anecdote. On the one hand there is the whole story of Bernie (summarized in the previous paragraph) but on the other hand Elton was drowned in thousands of problems and shitty things and still found or ended up finding a way to see that yelling at his best friend was wrong, and that is probably not easy (imagine that comes from someone who could not stop choosing the wrong path). The reality is that if Bernie stayed it is because Elton is worth it. I am sure that reviewing his story Elton is aware of the unreal friend that is Bernie, of what he had to endure (for some reason these scenes appear in the movie) and how fortunate he is to have him (for something he doesn't get tired of talking about his best friend). And believe me also that if what I am telling you was not real, the story would be too different. I know it because my friend never asked me for forgiveness and I left the friendship behind: only a few people can see theirs mistakes and then leave their pride and superiority to say sorry like Elton and only a few people can understand and then forget like Bernie.
