I think I remember reading somewhere that the original idea as to why Todd was still on top form and was able to beat Pirelli despite being in a penal colony for 15 years is because while there he was put to work as the prison barber, so he never lost his edge.
People hate joker 2 because it was a musical and nothing else. This movie shows that it is really not only about "being a musical" but everything around it. Every detail. Actors. The music itself. In the musical category , this is a masterpiece.
Yeah, I completely agree. Joker 2 was a musical literally just "because" - they didn't make any proper use of that genre, outside of just having the characters sing and dance (only those segments didn't actually add anything extra to the movie's narrative, even though that's exactly what distinguishes a Musical from a simple film). It was a shallow attempt of making a movie that "challenges the norms" - too bad, that the producers (and especially Todd Phillips) completely forgot to make the movie be enjoyable alongside it...
I was glad that Tim Burton finally got to do the film adaptation of Sondheim's legendary musical. It was a great effort. Saw it first day, first show, and SANG through the entire thing, as I am a baritone, and Sweeney is a baritone role.

Pirelli/David immediately recognises Todd's razors and knows Todd is Benjamin Barker, but since he used to look up to Barker, he decides to genuinely test himself against Todd to prove he's now better than his old idol in public. And even if he fails, he can still come back and strong-arm Todd after the contest - which he does until Todd kills him.

I was introduced to The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street via my band director, back in 1987, through the 1982 presentation of the full show, that PBS used to run during Pledge Week.
The proof is in the presentation. Pirelli actually demonstrated that he wasn’t Italian from one simple action. No person from any country would be so disrespectful as to use their home country’s flag to cover someone’s body whilst giving a shave or haircut.
I love the fakeness of the pope's paper. The insulting italian accent "da shave" The signature just stating "The pope" without even specifying is name. This whole scene the character unveils more and more layers of how much of a sham he is and it is wonderfully displayed in the movie !
Oh, Sweeney played that idiot for a sap. The key to beating a narcissist is playing on his ego, and Sweeney played it beautifully, hook, line, and sinker.
Even though the movie shows that he was able to tell that Sweeney was Benjamin Barker, it’s still a good show of his character; a narcissist who had his chance to prove his skill against someone he looked up to in the past, only to have his ego get in the way.
I always love how great of a look this is for Sweeney. Some combination of the lost gothic look of this version with the bonafide serial killer look of Josh Grobans would just be perfect

Here's why I love this scene. It's like the Tortoise and The Hare played out as a shaving contest. Pirelli is obviously the hare since he's arrogant, egocentric, and so overconfident that he wastes time. Todd, on the other hand, is the tortoise because he takes the time to properly set up his work, and it pays off. Todd wins because he knows his craft requires a lot of careful attention, whereas Pirelli is more interested in fame. All in all, this is an amazing scene.
Such an amazing piece, Sasha Baron Cohen stole the scene. I love this movie because it made me discover the original stage play, which I never saw before this movie came out.
If seeing this makes people seek out the original musical, I say that it's done its job. Actually, the new Broadway staging is supposed to be touring in '25 or '26...........CAN'T WAIT!!

I dont think any actor can redo Helena bonham carter and Johnny depps roles they do to good of a job and i dont think another actor could easily do what they do

Burtons movies always have been so dark..even tho they have comedic elements etc...
I prefer the Broadway play with George Hern and Angela Landsbury. The guy that played Pirelli in the play did a better job.
