    I grew up on this stuff and I still make it to this day, and I’m 58. Growing up on the family farm here in Ohio, mom would make a big pot of this and my brother and sisters would eat it until there was none left. Just watching this brings back memories of my late mother, may she Rest In Peace. Thank you for sharing this video. -Stephen, Ohio

    Looks so wonderful! My mom made this a lot when we were growing up. Only difference is she didn't add celery or bell pepper. It was always great the next day after it had absorbed tomato juice all night. And, yep, bread and butter dipped in is fabulous!

    My mother always used tomato juice to make goulash. She would cook the meat, onions, peppers, celery, seasonings, add uncooked pasta, and enough juice to cook the pasta. It was delicious. Yours looks yummy too.

    My mom made this, and when my kids were little she took care of them on the days they were too ill to go to school. She would always make them goulash. They still have this great memory. She would cook the pasta in the same pot and she added ketchup, that was her secret ingredient.

    I made some of this, slightly different. I did not add any celery and I added one can of spaghetti sauce and two cans of water. I let it simmer for half an hour then I added the dry macaroni and let it cook in the "sauce". It turned out fantastic. My mom used to make this with ground beef, I made mine with smoked sausage today. I did not add any salt. The sausages and the spaghetti sauce had enough salt. My mom also called it goulash. I know it is nothing like the real goulash. It was very inexpensive to make with ingredients I had on the shelf. We have leftovers for tomorrow as well. Great dinner idea that makes enough for leftovers. 👍 Thanks for sharing. 😊 🍽

    GREAT tip on the tomato juice. Will definitely do that next time I make goulash... which is about once a week, and it freezes beautifully.
    I like to add a splash of Worcestershire sauce to the hamburg as it cooks. Adds a nice flavor.

      There are several other things we can use in place of the Worcestershire Sauce sich as Balsamic Vinegar .... Soy Sauce ...... Dark or Black Soy Sauce ...... Oyster Sauce.

    The base of this is what I use for lots of meals. Mexican spices and rice added and baked with cheese on top is fantastic with corn chips. Add beans, bbq sauce and hot sauce for chili and have with corn bread. I add bbq sauce, worchestire sauce, ketchup, corn and mustard for sloppy joes which can be served on a bun. It is a great base for all kinds of things.

    My husband loves what we call goulash, I have changed mine over the years I partially cook my pasta before adding and I add a can of pork and beans and sometimes do a tomato base flavour or alternate with mushroom flavour. It's a pot full of goodness and its relatively easy to make. Hmmm tomato juice I must try that next time, thx.

  • @charleschapman2428
    @charleschapman2428 5 лет назад +4

    Looks great, try adding a tablespoon or two of vinegar, it gives the tomatoes a little acid snap, it gives the tomatoes a fresher taste. I've seen this made adding uncooked macaroni or shells right into the pot and let simmer for another twenty minutes or until macaroni is cooked.

    I love this recipe! I live alone so I'll freeze individual meals for later. I use a combination of extra low fat ground beef and and equal amounts of ground turkey. When the turkey is fried along with the ground beef it completely takes on the flavor of the beef. No one will know the difference if you don't tell them.

    Looks like a delicious Italian Hamburger Helper. I would add some oregano and basil, though, and serve it with some garlic bread and a garden salad with Italian dressing. I might add some spicy meatballs, too.
    Goulash is a Hungarian soup - somewhere between a soup and a stew. It was cooked out over an open fire in a cauldron that hung from a wooden tripod. Hungarians get that nice red color in their goulash using lots of paprika. (emphasis on the first syllable - always)
    Back in the 1960s, my mother bought a cookbook with something similar to this that they called goulash. Whoever wrote that cookbook confused four generations of Americans about what goulash is supposed to be. Goulash is a soup that would be prepared in the villages or in the fields for hungry people who worked hard in the open air all day. It is probably closest to an American cowboy stew, but with several tablespoons of Hungarian paprika.

    • @susanfurnish4132
      @susanfurnish4132 5 лет назад +2

      Except, I don't like Hamburger Helper.....too mushy & it has too many ingredients, with probably too much salt. But, I get your point.& If you add the Italian spices & garlic bread, etc., then you're making it an Italian something, & this video is just plain old American real people food; you know, like we throw together what we have, & it turns out tasting good. Simple stuff during hard times.

      It doesnt matter if its authentic goulash as you know it or not , its what they were given as a child by their mothers , they treasure that as being their mothers goulash , dont you see its not important , its the memory of their mother that comes back when they hear the words or see the food . So if the mother was mis-informed over a name of a recipe , who cares ? How in the scheme of things does it matter if it is not authentic , it really doesnt . Your remark was a little to sharp , not nescessary . Sorry , i had to tell you , i realise you didnt really mean it to come across that way , some of us are very sensitive , and maybe I am overly so at times . I just feel hurt for others at times . I add organic stewed tomatoes with a small chopped potato and organic macaroni to boil. No water. Brown organic hamburger with salt then add together after macaroni is done but not soggy put into bowls then eat with homemade organic bread n organic butter and dollop sour cream in the bowl. I have used onion in the hamburger but my husband became allergic to onion. My goulash is super amazing and I never dreamed I would like a potato in it. But don’t over cook nor under cook the potato. I’ve added V8 juice n is really good in this also.

    Did u cook the pasta half way or real al dente, before adding it to the mixture? no mushy pasta...I might have commented on this video before, but my Mom used to make her version of goulash, which she used canned WHOLE peeled tomatoes....so I'd probably do that, & then when u used the masher, it would brake up the whole tomatoes. I used to make for my son what I called, 'spaghetti goulash'...hahaha. & I basically used the ingredients you used here, (Oh! I didn't use celery) but with spaghetti & I only used tomato paste with added water, & made a loose sauce. We both liked it, & IF there was any left over the next day, it got devoured then. Hahaha....

      Susan Furnish I try never to over cook the pasta especially if I am adding it to sauce. I used To use whole tomatoes in my goulash also. Back in the day we didn’t have a whole lot of choices when it came to canned tomatoes lol. The reason I add celery is because I like the flavor and it adds a little crunch. Yours sounds delicious. Thank you for commenting and thank you for taking time to watch. I appreciate it so much. 👍

      Mother called it slumgullion, too. She also called meatloaf “buffalo meat.” I didn’t figure it out for years and was always disappointed when she called it meatloaf because I had it in my head that buffalo meat was so much better. Mother put ketchup and Worcestershire sauce in her goulash.

    You need a little better than bouillon and also some Worcestershire sauce that would set it off right. It's still an expensive but the taste brings it to a whole other level.

    I didn't mean to be rude, I was just asking. My mother is 85 years old and she could make change from a penny! I know all about growing up poor, but our family believed that even if you are cooking food to eat it better taste good, because we were not allowed too waste food! I had pick vegetables on a farm as a child because it was free if you picked it yourself! I was no more than 7 or 8 years of age, and we had to pick a whole bushel before we were allowed to stop! I was just saying simple can be tasty with a little flavor! It's a southern thing we were taught from the beginning of learning how to cook! Once again I am sorry if I offended you! I was raised the right way including as the old folks would say home training!!😏🤔😔 God Bless you and yours!

      You are right. There should be enough salt in the juice. A few drops of hot sauce can jack up the taste w/o adding too much salt.
