  • Jirard Khalil, aka The Completionist has been a beloved creator, largely because of his charity, the Open Hand Foundation. But recently, SomeOrdinaryGamers and Karl Jobst have uncovered a dark history in this foundation, leaving The Completionist with a lot to answer for.
This video is a summary of the ongoing conflict between The Completionist, Mutahar/SomeOrdinaryGamers, and Karl Jobst. The drama primarily revolves around The Open Hand Foundation.

Yeah, the dumbest part of this whole thing was Jirad's response. Instead of really apologizing he doubles down and accidentally admits to embezzling money and misleading viewers. He should have just:
      1) claimed ignorance. Jirad doesn't solely own OpenHand - he was just a board member.
      2) donated a significant amount of money to offset inflation losses
      3) distanced himself from OpenHand going forward.
Whatever lawyer / PR firm wrote his script is incompetent.

Just look at Jamie Lee Curtis’s donations: $15,000 one year, $20,000 another, $25,000 another, and more. None of that has shown up. And the sponsors on those golf posters are giant companies, like Coca Cola, for crying out loud. You can work out, from where they are on the posters, what the minimum they paid was, as their paperwork states where their brand will show up on the signs, according to how much they spent. One thing that gets ignored is that he is on the Board of Directors for the Charity.
I've worked in the financial sector in this capacity so i know that his claim of "not knowing it didn't get donated" is BS.
Every Quarter they'd have to have a meeting, recorded in the minutes would be, amongst other things, a review of their financial statements.
This would happen every quarter with a more in depth look at the end/start of a financial year.
    So either:
    1. They didn't do those quarterly and yearly reviews, meaning they are negligent and he really didn't know.
    Or
    2. He knew the entire time and the 2022 thing is an outright lie.
Either way he's either negligent or malicious.
Already the evidence is crystal clear he's a prolific liar with regard to him saying he donated money within the 10 year period.
It's also worth pointing out that they'd likely have accountants come in and review their accounts and do the book keeping.
One thing with that is that the Board of Directors would have to sign off on any financial returns and any tax documents that they reviewed and agreed with their findings.
So basically, out there is a document each year that says he and his board signed off on, which states they did review their accounts and aren't lying (i'm sure you are all aware of the warning they put on tax returns abouy lying)
So TLDR he's in much bigger trouble than people think and he's either negligent or malicious in his conduct.

I work in auditing, though not a full on IRS style of auditing, I can tell you for a fact that most businesses do not do those meetings like they're supposed to. Especially considering this was a fairly small "family run" charity.
It's still negligent, and I don't believe for a minute he didn't know a *lot* of money was sitting in an account, but it wouldn't surprise me if the minutes for that meeting were just written up by one person and were generic as possible.

So I'll help bullet point this a bit. These follow the textbook definitions of the accusations.
Fraud: Jirard on dozens of occasions said the money was going to charity, and name dropped various charities he said were getting the money. This gave people the impression the money was going to a good cause for specific charities and functions. This was a lie, and it is fraud.
Embezzlement: Jirard said on probably a hundred occasions that all event subs, superchats, bits, donations etc were going to open hand and that "we aren't touching any of it" Now he says that went to expenses. It is completely understandable that a charity has expenses BUT 1: He lied. 2: Since the money was never sent from Jirard to open hand and used on expenses we can't know if any of that was pocketed.
Theft: We have photo and website proof that the golf charity was pulling in at least $40k a year (besides during covid). If you add up indieland and private donations those alone makes up the reported income for the year. That means the golf money is missing.
These aren't just baseless accusations. These are from tax forms, photos, and Jirards own admissions. That isn't even getting into the fact the charity account made no interest and from sitting there lost value due to inflation. Or how about Jirard claiming to have found out in 2021 yet did not change anything from the websites to donations to lies on stream. I would also like the end this explaining that making a restricted donation is well and good, but you could do that with any amount. You do not need to raise the cash for 10 years to make it restricted.

His claims for restricted donations don't make sense though, as there is no limit to making a restricted donation. But on top of this, how does donating the money now - an amount they had years ago - make their claim any better? If the 600k that was donated was good enough to make a restricted donation now, then why wasn't it donated when Jirard found out about the money not being moved a few years ago? It makes no sense. He's lying.
The reality is that he doesn't care about the charity or donating the money - he doesn't fundamentally care about that, which is why he didn't place a large importance on it. The charity was a vehicle for personal gain. He cared about building up his brand and channel, and making connections with developers and publishers in the gaming industry, as he already said he wanted to transition to this part of the gaming industry. That is what he cared about. The money sitting in an account and lying about specific parties the money was being donated to? It was like whatever to him - just a necessary thing to say and do to get what he wanted. Spending any time moving the money was not on his priority list, clearly. This had nothing to do with unrestricted vs restricted donations.

    • @novalinnhe
      @novalinnhe 5 месяцев назад +4

"making connections in the gaming industry" - you know, that's an angle I haven't seen many people cover, but I think you're on the money with that one.
Thinking about it further, how Indieland spawned from the golf tournaments makes even more sense from that angle. With the golf tournaments, Jirad was probably seeing his family make great connections through the people they were meeting there, and leveraging those connections into better opportunities.
If Jirad wanted to move into game development, then getting to rub shoulders with well-known developers, publishers, and other industry folk at an equivalent "high-profile charity event" would indeed be a pretty socially lucrative way to go about it. It's connection-building in the long-term, but profile-boosting in the short-term as well.
Someone in another comment said "Jirad cared less about the donation of the funds, and more about having the identity of a fundraiser", and I think it's a pretty apt summary of all this.

Here's my theory about the end goal since you've asked, it is to pocket the golf tourney money, as well as all the subs, superchats, merch sales that can be hidden or unaccounted for, and of course all the clout and good will and self serving needs that people would want in the public eye. So while the money that can actually be accounted for is sitting in the bank, to show that it's there, they're quietly collecting on the back ends and basking in the glory of public adoration.

I don’t think I’ve seen a uncovering like this that I’ve felt so in touch with. I had immediate family members pass away from this disease, while the rest of them completely fell apart having to pick up the pieces. The never ending stress of feeling helpless for a loved one lead some of them to Depression, Alcoholism, etc etc, because they felt it was hopeless trying to address a problem with no cure in sight. So many people in the world have felt this way, but what’s even more a slap in the face is I’m sure Jirard has too.
That’s why none of this makes sense. With him having such a personal tie to this experience, you would think that he would know that because this disease is so debilitating (you are literally working against the clock) making deliberate strides to donate the money of that size is beyond crucial, as the current day medical approach is in desperate need of more research/ resources. This disease feels like there's a dark cloud looming over, reminding you that you are running out of time and it is tragic. To wait almost a decade and get caught in your own web of lies and contradictions about "why it wasn't donated sooner" is beyond gross negligence.

People act like just holding the money is totally separate from using it to enrich yourself. But even if it’s not spent, you can wield the implied control of it for your personal benefit. You can leverage that implied power to get more donations, to invoke higher profile partners, to elevate your personal profile and convert that profile into more personal revenue. It wasn’t ‘inexplicably just held on to’, it was hoarded and used as a basis to build social capital, and that social capital is profitable. The money ‘just sitting’ might have been passive, but the team behind it wasn’t, so this negligence cannot just be choked up to ‘inexplicable incompetence’ when it absolutely had the function to increase the personal capital of its controllers. His eleventh hour donation doesn’t wipe away any of that either.
