- "Cancel Culture" and drama go hand-in-hand with achieving any level of celebrity. Whether it's Ned Fulmer, iilluminaughtii, or Ellen DeGeneres, public figures are no strangers to backlash. But in response to creators like Adin Ross, SSSniperwolf, and J.K. Rowling escaping any consequences from being cancelled, many have taken to saying that "cancel culture" is fake. The Cancel Culture Paradox is my attempt to explain why it may feel that way, but couldn't be further from the truth.
This video is a video essay analyzing the "cancellation" of prominent creators and celebrities like Gus Johnson, Ned Fulmer, and James Corden.

Part of the problem is that I think that the term "getting canceled" is used too much. There is a big difference between "my career is being destroyed for no good reason" and "some people are criticizing something I said."

It's hasn't because her fans are seeing her doxxing Jacksfilms as a form of self defence when he was literally just calling her out and applying pressure so it couldn't be swept under the rug and everyone who hates her already either hated her for her content theft or just didn't particularly like her
No parties have really switched sides here so the impact on her bottom line has only been the week long "temporary demonetisation" that we had to push RUclips to actually enforce on her after saying it was her punishment for committing a crime

I would argue that her brand is "hot girl", not nice girl, and therefore she will be just fine.
It sucks that the cancel culture dynamic even exists on an extremely small scale, even within just a high school friend group. Everyone always says that there is “the mean one” in the friend group that gets away with, well, being mean. But the second any other person in the group snaps, they’re exiled. If only people understood that “That’s just how they are” should NEVER be an excuse for toxicity and blatant disregard for anyone besides themselves.

About 3 or 4 groups have done what this thread is off of and only one I didn't get kicked out but the abuser didn't ether. the problem is a lot of the group is made with that "mean" person and they all trust them so when one member invites a new person and they don't hit it off with this mean person, they get kicked. What I say everyone should do is act one way to one person, even in a group as one person is fine with the "your a fuck wit" jokes but another can't handle it.
Small scale is just social exclusion, I'd say it is even worse than cancelling
happened to me, got harassed endlessly for cutting off the wrong friend and accused of shit i never did and bc i thought it was ridiculous bc it wasnt something I would do, i didnt bother defending myself till it was too late. the bully got away with manipulating and scamming people for years but i get ostracized for having boundaries without even mentioning any of it publicly lol
Something I've personally noticed with people getting cancelled(to put it, at least with RUclips) is that people like SSSniperwolf, Shane Dawson, James Charles, and Jeffree Star don't get "cancelled" because they all have histories of controversy(or, at the least, have large followings) while people like iilluminaughtii and Creepshow Art have built reputations of "being good people", and then had something that's actually bad revealed and people then just don't talk about then anymore(and these people also usually have smaller followings online). But then again, as far as I know, Blair White also has a smaller following, but has had a lot of controversies tied to her, so I might have to take the size of following or of that.
I think this is personally the example of it. Why do some people get away with it; it's the lack of an audiences who cares to hold other responsible.
When we look to Ned, it's because they fostered an audience who care about this type of behavior. Because he presented himself as being a good person, who loved and cared for those around him making his bad actions amplified with a community who wouldn't support it. We look to Ellen who's slogan was 'Be kind,' a face of positivity and a community who valued that from her character in media [dory] to impact on queer representation-- so when it comes out she's actually shitty all of this is going to have an added weight in the switch. Your audience matters, these are people targeting those who care about these issues, these ideas and movement who often don't separate content from creator and that's where the difference is with those who are being held to a standard.
Look no further than SSSniperwolf. Her fans clearly aren't there for content, most are either kids who don't understand the level of consequences, think its funny because it's their favorite creator, or people attracted who will white knight the hot girl for a sliver of chance. These aren't the type looking for more than entertainments as long as pretty girl does thing. Trisha is known for controversy, it's why people keep going back despite doing so many horrible things, it's her brand. James/Shane/Jeffery build audiences of those who think they've changed post cancelling over and over eventually making them have fans who acknowledge the past but often let it slide because of the post cancel limelight. We look to real life celebrities and to be honest-- J.K is safe because there are always going to be people on the other side of the political lining that will support that makes them generally immune. It sucks to acknowledge but for all the Jewish, Trans, and other minorities who call it out there will always be TERFs and those who ignore politics to support if that's who is facing cancelation over morality based moments [edit; this political side is also one that goes both ways].
Cancel culture is all about audience and demographic, and it will always determine who effectively gets deplatformed/held accountable than pretending like it doesn't exist or always exists.

The reason the "Cancel culture paradox" exists is pretty simple, at least to me. People get bored. Campaigns can last a long time when people think they're making a difference, but if the target acts as if it doesn't bother them/the target starts to attract like minded individuals/the target disappears long enough(this one is kinda harder to pull off), people move on to an easier target.
The reason people seem to hate on comparatively nothing burgers is also pretty simple. Whether we like to admit it or not, everyone loves to be "allowed" to hate someone. Hating obviously hate-able people isn't fun, nah that kind of pleasure only comes from being a contrarian. It's why you'll see a lot of "I knew I didn't like him for a reason", no, you hated them from the start and wanted any justifiable reason to voice it.
Not making a judgement of such behavior, but just bringing attention to it.

Ultimately it narrows down to "fake people get cancelled".
It's failing to meet expectations what truly gets you cancelled.

The videos point is that cancel culture is shit and ruins people's lives, this guy says the only ones immune to it are the honest ones, which isn't even true in the slightest. legit look at pewdiepies view to sub counts from all the controversys he was in, he never lied about any of it and apologized, sure he makes good views but not for someone with 100m+ subs, as well as a recent RUclips controversy ephemeral rift, which he also said some pretty bad shit but once again, was honest about all of it. And his views and subs have fallen. Sure they should be held accountable for saying things but these people go out of their way to dox, threaten, and harass them for mistakes. Which also funnily enough won't target people like Elon musk or mark Zuckerberg, who are still billionaires and have little to no backlash for things they've done, inherently much worse then most people's wrong doings on this platform. I mean like the previous yt ER I mentioned, the first couple days of it happening I looked through his comments and saw one threatening to come at his family. Which under no circumstances should that be okay. His comment really has no relevance to the video.
This also explains why MrBeast took some heat from the hide and seek drama. Fudging the placements was inauthentic and went against his brand, even if it was kind of a small thing it still did do some damage.
Every time the discussion of "is cancel culture real" comes out, I will always point to ProJared as a pure example. That man got raked HARD.

@@daniel-darling Two unrelated things came to light at around the same time. The first was that he allegedly cheated on his wife, which wasn't true. That doesn't necessarily mean that his now-ex-wife was lying; she might just not have known the whole story. The second thing was that he solicited nude photos from minors, which he actually did get into in his defense video and said that one of the accusers wasn't able to provide any evidence, and to make a long story short, their story didn't add up, and the other, despite technically being truthful, left out some key information, mainly the fact that the whole thing was part of an N.S.F.W. Tumblr page (back when that was still a thing), giving Jared every reason to believe that this kid was 18 or older, and the reason he didn't ask for I.D. was because doing that would be asking people to dox themselves.
I hope this explains it.
Ned not only lied to his audience, "the Tryceratops" (who looked up to him as the "love is real" and USED his children to prove "I'm such a great and loyal dad" guy) but to his wife, his best friends and business partners (who risked their savings to start their company), and his employees! What he and his mistress did was beyond disgusting!!

You made a lot of great points. It is true for example that the reason why Blair lost a lot of goodwill was not just that hypocrisy but also how she didn’t really apologize for her actions and dragged many people down with her.
An apology does work when it’s genuine and you take full responsibility and work to make amends in a genuine way. Atrioc pulled it off successfully. His was one of the best apology videos I’ve ever seen, and he has recovered nicely because of it.
I think pewdiepies always been very genuine with his apologies too
Also Jenna Marbles. If she decided to come back to RUclips her audience would celebrate because her apology was genuine and explained in detail what she did and why it was wrong.
I think you summed up a large problem I've had with the whole cancel culture debate, which is that awful people known for being awful face no real consequence for how they act, while smaller creators have an unrealistically high standard to uphold and it's practically game over if they make a mistake. The imbalance is very strong and most of those smaller scale cancellations have a higher batting average of success based purely off such audiences. Smaller ones tend to be more collectivist by nature, in many cases like an echochamber not unlike the tryhard alpha male types like Tate and Sneako. I notice this a lot in places like the cartoon community where unpopular opinions or deviation from toxic positivity get some buttons pushed a ton by that crowd. It's more noticeable with Twitter types to be fair, which has the worst track record for toxic discussions of the cancel-y kind. Regardless, it's just very detrimental to many communities at large unless someone is genuinely awful to their audience. Much of the time, the issues are either overblown or fabricated, and the cult dynamic makes it hard to speak out. Apologizing also doesn't undo that harm on its own, and further risks alienation. It's honestly frustrating that such a problem has to be a concern for aspiring artists and creators these days, as it does a lot to worsen problems with insecurity and mental health. When they're essentially told that you can't change as a person after a blunder, it dehumanizes a lot. Jerks will be jerks no matter what, and that fact is weaponized so badly it's cemented as part of online culture.
Cancelling isn't inherently bad since there's a ton of gross and abusive people who don't deserve the platform they have. But alas, systemic problems really only benefit the larger names who have a more disposable audience to lose whereas lighter offenders of lower power have no chance to make a comeback even if they were slandered.

@MoltenUranium it's the whole supermega drama. Lex, a friend of the supermega hosts, came out with allegations against supermega about how they poorly handled the claims of SA she made against the channels former thumbnail artist. She said that they didn't handle it well, they took too long to do anything about it, that Matt tried to get her and her assailant in the same room together to talk it over, along with some other not great things the supermega boys did behind closed doors. In the days that followed, other people were coming out with their own stories (the boys later came out with Apologies and responses where they took accountability for the things they were at fault for, and disproved the things that weren't true.) Nick, a friend of Lex's, before the boys even had a chance to respond, or before any of the allegations were actually proven, made a video of all the worst claims made about SuperMega, titled it "SuperMega is full of awful people." And then just uploaded it. Even at one point, in either that video or the follow up, that he was less concerned about the facts, and more concerned about spreading his friends story. Come to find out, thanks to this video, apparently Nick has in the passed claimed that cancel culture was fake, but has apparently decided to still try and cancel supermega.

im only 3 minutes in, but from what i can see in my time online, being cancelled only works if your primary income is coming from online sources. people in big industry like dave chapelle or jk rowling are much harder to deplatform because they have connections behind the screen protecting them. birds of a feather flock together and all that

I feel so, so bad for Kwite. As someone who used to be a mindless Twitter drone, I myself attacked him when everything first went down in his comments section. I absolutely hate that it took him doing a forced face reveal and unpacking years and years of trauma on camera for the world to see for me and so many others to realize how fucked up of a thing to do that was. Cancel culture is something that CAN be good, if done correctly, however it never is, because the correct people are never the ones who are "held accountable", and even bad people who ARE "held accountable" never keep that accountability, because they're able to just bury it and have it almost never affect them again. I can't imagine what Kwite had to go through and I will always regret my past actions.
Basically, TLDR of what was basically just be feeling guilty: CANCEL CULTURE IS FUCKING STUPID (especially on Twitter) and will NEVER have good results, because good people will end up being relentlessly harassed and treated like the scum of the earth, and bad people will NEVER TRULY BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE.
(I haven't even watched the video yet, just needed to say all this, lol. Put in my two cents, as it were.)

It isnt even about "canceling." Sssniperwolf has repeatedly shown she should be behind bars. She posted 15 seperate videos of her exploiting children in a sexual manner.

Man, I always feel bad for Gus. Like yes, he made some mistakes, but ultimately the thing that lost him his career, his passion, was being accused for things he didn’t do, and him being the bigger person and not fighting back.
I said it at the time, but the whole thing would bother me much less if what people criticize him for was the truth. Whenever I see a stray comment outlining the situation, the vast majority of it is just incorrect.

Im constantly amazed by the level of quality in all your uploads. There will never be a completelty objective commentary piece, but your channel has done on of the best jobs of looking at cases from the middle of the road. Keep up with the good work king.
I think the brand betrayal being a prominent factor in someone being successfully canceled highlights that it's crucial that the ones doing the cancelling are the actual fanbase and not outsiders.
Like for example, I've witnessed like around 3 separate instances of people trying to cancel Wendigoon, however in almost every single instance it's situations that basically never leave reddit/twitter and inevitably fizzle out. At the same time, the ones spearheading these attempts are almost never people that actually *watch* Wendigoon and instead are always like weirdly overly analytical and politicized, which is like the borderline complete opposite of Wendigoon's audience which is a lot more generalized and laid back. That combined with the fact Wendigoon comes off as one of *the* most sincere and kind people on this platform these outsiders basically never find purchase.
I agree with the points in this video, but I also think there's a very parasocial aspect at play as well. Some people are such die hard fans of certain creators that they'll ignore anything and everything wrong they do (especially if they're either children, or the fanbase is primarily made of "simps" for lack of a better word). If you tell a child they can no longer watch their favorite RUclips channel because the owner did something really bad, they'll be less likely to fully grasp the gravity or the damage done. If you make a bunch of people who find you attractive feel like you're talking directly to them in your videos, and like you might even be a personal friend, they might defend you like their life depends on it. But if you make funny skit videos, it will feel less like you're directly talking to your audience, and they'll feel less like they're losing a friend if they start boycotting you. I feel like there's a reason some of the worst people on the platform primarily target children/preteens with their content, because they won't be thinking as critically about it.
I was around for the supermega event and I think it's like you said. As soon as they clarified a lot of what they were thinking and took responsibility for the actions that they did commit, the internal anger from the fanbase kind of died down. I think it did hurt them, though, and more than it should have in the long run. Much of the fanbase felt betrayed, people were burning and pissing on merch. They had that sort of parasocial connection that a lot of their fanbase created INCLUDING myself to an extent to where people felt like they were being betrayed by a close friend instead of an internet creator. Then, when a good portion of it was proven to be untrue, a lot of people backtracked and realized they were misinformed or became wayyy too defensive of them. (I hope I'm in the former here.)
But I think that parasocial aspect is also what is going to enable them to come back. Look at Gamegrumps - a parasocial fanbase that has gotten to the point where, because the content isn't what certain fans want, has made them wish for an event where they could be cancelled. People look way too far into their personal relationships, friends that don't talk anymore, read way too far into dialogue on certain let's plays, and created an entire subreddit that contributed to a false accusation of grooming that almost destroyed their careers. And yet, they were able to move on because it was pushed so hard from bad faith actors. I think that's another part of this - if the creator isn't making content that former fans want to see, as sad as it sounds, they're more likely to believe "cancellations" without looking at both sides of the story.

Cancel Culture was especially damaging to the Smash scene, specifically Melee. Sure it took out bad figures like DJ and D1, but then people started saying ANYTHING to attack anybody, and with what happened to La Luna and Westballz already being awful, it was Mew2King’s event that made me permanently hate Cancel Culture. Somebody accused him of sexual misconduct with literally zero evidence. No screenshots, no receipts, nothing. People were on the “believe everybody” train, so they attacked him like crazy. In order to get it to stop, he had to reveal that he has a congenital deformity that makes him incapable of orgasming, which was the most embarrassing video to make. He nearly cried multiple times while making the video, and as a fan, it was so hard to watch. “Listen and believe” is only for friends. If it is online, you only believe when there is hard evidence, because history has shown that the majority of the time, accusations online are either exaggerated or outright lies.
The thing about brand is very true. Jaiden Animations or Mr. Rogers could never have gotten away with saying/doing even one of the controversial things Trump or Seth MacFarlane did. If Markiplier or Jacksepticeye said the N word, they'd be gone but it's somehow "brave" when PewDiePie or Turkey Tom does it.
Wow it's almost like it's totally separate demos/crowds they are trying to appeal to and people aren't a universal hive mind..... next thing you'll tell me is people registered with different political parties have different standards for what issues they want their candidates fight for, and that just crazy talk clearly everyone is in 100% lock step perfect agreement on those. Do atheists and Christians have different Morals and standards from each other too? My mind keeps being blown

I would have argued Tobuscus is an even more intense example than Gus. Gus took damage, but he's still going. After the accusations, Tobs lost literally everything. His friends, his RUclips career, his reputation, and eventually his mind. As I hear it, Tobuscus never recovered, and he'll likely never be who he used to be because the sudden downfall of his career and everyone turning their backs on him caused him to go completely insane.

this is a genuinely really wonderful and thoughtful video and the only one i’ve seen that acknowledges the nuances of being canceled. i also think people tend to overlook the emotional effect a cancellation can bring, even if one is able to vindicate themselves. slazo is a great example; he disproved all of the allegations, but he hasn’t made a video in three years and he spoke at length in an interview with black wolf company about how negatively his cancellation affected his mental state and his ability to trust other people.

Half of this "paradox" premise is complete inversion of reality. How can caving to bullies make you a bigger person? Withholding important context that's in your favor is the wrong thing on every level. No justice-seeking personality would be inclined to do that. That's a behavior of a validation-seeking person. Same with people apologizing for things that aren't even wrong at all, which happens frequently. Jenna Marbles even fully cancelled herself when she had nothing to apologize for whatsoever.
Sucks that the internet is like this, that doesn't change the fact that when they do something wrong yet the internet doesn't let them take accountability, what they did is still wrong. Modern internet honestly sucks

Unrelated but what is the music you used in the beginning ?
I do really like your breakdown of this topic though it has made me think of two other instances about cancel culture.
One is Vivziepop. When Hazbin Hotel’s pilot first dropped there was someone who had posted this long document showing all these pieces of evidence from Vivziepop’s tumblr to try and expose her as terrible person. Vivziepop ended up returning with a similarly long post where she addressed every point made. Some points she apologized for those opinions she made and doesn’t agree with (mostly ones when 16), and some other points she didn’t apologize for as she pointed out context removed to make her look bad and provided that removed context. This caused a lot of this cancel crowd to calm down, plus point out that the original poster had a whole year to bring this up yet waited for the popularity of the pilot to finally drop to bring it out. (Plenty other controversies have happened since then but I just wanted to bring up this big first one as was a good way to respond)
The other one being Justin Roiland. When the news caught wind of a trial of his ex-girlfriend suing him, soon after several companies fully dropped him from everything. When the lawsuit was dropped due to the ex feeling she didn’t have enough evidence Roiland made a statement claiming cancel culture got him due to his ex trying to slander him, which plenty of people were confused as the ex never said anything it was the news that spread the story. I don’t think many companies would drop you that quickly and publicly if they either didn’t have issues behind closed doors or had pretty solid feeling it was true. (I personally won’t follow him for how he tried to throw his supposed friend Alex Hirsch under the bus for his behavior)

Brand betrayal is a great explanation for many cancellations. Sandoval (from a show on Bravo) got cancelled for cheating on his long term girlfriend while Jax (same show) cheated several times and betrayed friends, yet he didn’t get as much backlash. Reason: brand betrayal. Sandoval was very well liked and seen as cool and a good guy. Jax on the other hand is an unapologetic asshole, so his actions aren’t judged as hard. It makes so much sense now

There is something i like to call "The Funnel Effect". There are some categories of followers: the casual ones, the ones that think somewhat like you, the ones that think almost like you and the ones that think exactly like you. In cancellation, you will be losing strip of followers one after one until only the last group. If you have enough followers in the last group, you will survive and, unless, off course you change your ideas, with every new cancellation, instead of losing followers you will win followers because more people will be exposed to you and the chances of they have the same ideas of yours will increase. Sorry if i had a bad english.
Me personally, I think part of what any one person decides to do is up to them, including a choice to unsubsribe or unfollow someone. I don't think every decision made by every single person is always well thought out, but i do think there are people who think through their actions less or not at all and have followers that either dont care or think continuing to follow is a fight against cancel culture. The volatility of the entertainment industry as it gets more saturated clashing with the sheer insanity that is the internet inevitably meant that the loudest controversies would blow up not necessarily the ones that were the most deplorable
This video has changed me, it is more than about cancel culture. It is about betrayal of an image or an expectation and how people react in result.

With ned, i def think the decision to remove him was more than him cheating on his wife, but for the average consumer, thats all that matters. Because aside from the cheating, there was also the power imbalance of dating someone whose income and career is partially if not mainly in his hands. On a company aspect, i imagine that it in part had to do with that the other guys, who were owners alongside with him, could not trust him anymore, not only did he betray someone they all cared about, but he made the brand more directly involved by having his affair with a coworker who happened to be a highlight of some if their videos that were apart of a well known series on the try guys channel. His abuse of power or at least potential abuse of power, if it had come out or happened any differently could have resulted in not only the loss of his career, but the loss of the other guys career as well as the countless people they employ. Ned ultimately was a huge risk to the future of the try guys and no matter what would probably have been removed regardless of how mad or upset the try guys were of the situation. And as you mentioned, his specific brand was being the wife and family guy, and his wife was a decent sized component of the company, appearing in multiple videos and starring in one of their podcasts, viewers knew her, liked her, and ultimately his cheating became more personal than if she was never or very rarely in videos.

Canceling is very much real. The best example of it would easily be EDP. Dude got canceled hard. Sure what he did was a very severe crime, but there was not hard evidence of it, so he wasn’t able to face legal consequences, but he sure got canceled hard.

While you did bring this up for a bit in this video, one thing I would like to see you talk about is: "How do you recover from being canceled?" It is the thing I worry most about whenever someone is getting canceled, whether they deserved it or not.
The other group susceptible to cancellation among that upper league are people who for whatever reason a lot of people seemed to dislike, but couldn’t latch onto a reason to legitimately cancel them, that is until they could. I think someone like Kevin Spacey fits into this camp, and James Gunn nearly fell into that category.
Gunn brings up another aspect of cancel culture in that now that American political views have become so divisive, you have people being targeted for cancellation simply because their core supporters happen to be made up of the group that another group despises.

Idk, maybe this is a hot take, but here goes: The idea of "canceling" started off well enough as a way to hold people accountable. But it's just become insufferable.
On one hand, you have people who make a fuss out of everything and are just straight annoying, and sometimes outright dangerous.
And on the other hand, you have people who bitch and moan about being "cAnCeLlEd" for being even slightly criticised.
Both are obnoxious, and Twitter is a cesspool of toxicity.

The most embarrassing instance of "cancellation" was Shane Gillis where his career has been massively enhanced by getting cancelled, he's said it himself in interviews and he barely even has any ill will about it as a result. It wasn't just totally ineffective in that case it was actively counter-productive, I'd never even heard of him or watched his stuff until after he was cancelled which was probably the case for a lot of people. If you want to try and hold people accountable online go ahead and knock yourself out, it's your life not mine, but don't fool yourself into thinking that you're part of some kind of internet court that can hand down binding sentences because you're not.
It's better to insincerely apologize and have people suspect that you don't care than sincerely double down and confirm it.

I like to think of Cancel culture like answering yes to the question 'Are you unconscious'.
Cancel Culture doesn't exist when you consider that most people who get "canceled" are still able to let the world know they've been canceled, on the exact platform they were supposed to be cancelled on. It fundamentally is not effective if you haven't been completely deplatformed. Losing brand deals while retaining your platform is not being canceled.
You keep your access to a subscription or a membership after it was supposed to have been canceled

Now sit here and think about this. there are people in the world that are getting away with huge crimes. So this really fits together with harsher subjects too. there's proven corruption and other things that are just allowed to go even though everyknow knows it. It's a very weird paradox.
I always found who gets cancelled and what for so fascinating. It’s kind of like a train wreck where it’s awful but you can’t look away. Some people definitely deserve it but it’s the people who deserve it the most who won’t be affected.
I think there is also a vulnerability for weakness or flaws people can’t change to cancelling. The ProJared incident is something that always baffles me this is as a fan mind you! Some bias here but I did believe the initial allegations. They spread way farther than you would expect and people at the time seemed more upset with him cheating on his wife than the more damning but eventually proven false underage fans allegations. Part of me always believed they spread so far because of how he looked and was appealing to crown on him because of it especially because of his ‘hot’ wife. If someone looks funny, already somewhat hated or perhaps even over liked they are more fun targets no? There is an appeal to it that I can’t understand but it’s something that is worth noting.
