The War on React Content (xQc, SSSniperwolf)

  • React creators xQc and SSSniperwolf have found themselves bombarded by drama and controversy for weeks. This is partially thanks to Jacksfilms and DarkViperAU, two of the most vocal opponents of react content in the creator space. Many have argued for years that react content is theft, and creators like xQc and SSSniperwolf need to either solve compensation, or find a new gig.
    This is a video essay discussing the conflicts surrounding react content on RUclips.

    We had this discussion in RUclips Germany about 2 years ago. What I would like is a "share" function for reactions, so you could give like 30 percent to a creator that u are reacting to. If I would see someone as XQC react on my content i would try to claim it, ngl. What he does is really cringe.

      I like the concept of the "share" function, but considering some of the react videos shown in this video, I'd think even 30 percent would be stealing. If I live stream a 2 hour documentary and don't add anything of merit, even 90% to the creator seems unfair to the creator. Though making an easy way for reactors to connect with content creators and decide together what the split would be seems like a great idea. It protects the creators and also allows reactors to more easily find videos to react to in an ethical way. Especially if that monetary split can be built into RUclips so the money is immediately disbursed to both parties in the share they agreed upon.

    What I’ve always loved about jacksfilms is that whenever he features other people's content, he makes sure to give them as much credit as possible, especially when he asks fans to submit videos for YIAY. This video has helped me understand what always rubbed me the wrong way about most react content. Like I love watching professionals react to videos on things in their field(attorney reacting to something legal, marine biologist reacting to something on marine life, ect) but things like watching someone just react to a video or show with no real commentary added to it has just always rubbed me the wrong way. It just didn't quite feel right to watch someone just passively make little comments or facial expressions, never pausing to voice thoughts and opinions sometimes correcting incorrect facts, you know adding to the discussion. I can see now that my issue was with the fact that it just felt wrong to not be watching the original bit of content when nothing was being added by the person reacting.

      One of the only Reactors I like to watch nowadays is the Matthews Fam. He often pauses videos and gives his insight on different situations; some videos I could easily point to is him reacting to Weird Al songs. Throughout the videos he pauses and rewinds to highlight particularly clever lyrics, compliment Weird Al's musical know-how, or just laugh at the goofy dance moves.
      Back in the day, I was a pretty big fan of Blasphemous HD, as he would often do the same thing. He'd pause videos and give his current thoughts/predictions, or just to make a joke. • @TwoBs
      @TwoBs 9 месяцев назад +5

      I think what a lot of people really have an issue with is how RUclips themselves will do nothing about it. They will push the react content to recommended/trending pages and further boost it in the algorithm … while the original videos they “react” to get stifled in the algorithm and often can’t even get that type of traction. Some have even had their abilities to trend, receive ads, and be recommended be removed for the content it may contain, yet the people that “react” get to keep those features for themselves.
      It’s made even worse when RUclips openly puts a spotlight on these channels and props them up as content creators - like they did with Sssniperwolf, but they never reach out to those that put in 110% effort to create content that gets passed around on the platform to begin with. All they care about is the views and subs they have and automatically label them as being a “top creator”.
      People have constantly brought up ways to implement a feature that will force “react” channels to link the video they’re watching and have a way for so much of the earned revenue from views go to the original creators, but of course … it goes ignored.
      It’s a vicious cycle repeating for a reason, but I’d argue it’s even worse now than it was prior. At least back then, the majority of people were on board with calling it out once it happened. Most people clearly saw the issue and helped shun those that did it. _However_ … now we have people that will actively justify and defend this type of content. People that has been raised on watching Twitch all day, watching other people watch other people. It’s become so normalized that it’s hard to even make a joke about it anymore. I think that’s why this round of the repeating cycle is more vicious with more people talking about it. It’s gone beyond just mere drama that disappears and reappears, and other content creators are trying to get others to continue speaking about it to maybe help enforce a change to where we don’t have to repeat this shit anymore and seeing the cycle as the “norm”. Pair it with AI generated content on the rise (stealing content with AI voiceovers using loopholes with the policy), it’s hurting genuine creators who simply can’t compete anymore.

      It's not crazy. Remember America's Funniest Home Videos? You probably don't, but it is essentially a react channel except it's on TV. It's been running for 37(!!!) years. The "react" format is a staple in entertainment, and RUclips has always had a version of it.
      Ray William Johnson, the OG react channel, was the first channel on RUclips to reach 5M subscribers; from 2009-2013 he was the most popular channel on this platform until PewDiePie came along.

    It's refreshing to see someone specifically reference (and recommend) DarkViperAU's series of video essays without either ignorantly or intentionally misrepresenting them. I was a huge fan of watching Hasan's react videos before I'd ever watched a DarkViperAU video, but his video targeting Hasan was impossible to avoid clicking on. I ideologically align with the politics that Hasan proclaims, but this random guy's video essay made Hasan look like such an entitled, defensive hypocrite that I can't watch any of Hasan's content to this day. The people you refer to as the "everyman's" reaction streamer/RUclipsr are undeniably exploiting the labor that others have done, which in my mind is unethical. Our whole society is based off of labor exploitation, but it's extra gross to see it happening in an area that creators and reactor's alike share a space, and therefore should have more solidarity and not be willing to exploit their fellow man's hard work.

      Of course is unethical, it should be common sense not only in your mind. They use the work of others constantly, refusing to put any effort themselves.
      As for the political streams and so on are even worse, they are doing the same thing stated in my first sentence but they're also spreading a mob full of hatred against anyone who doesn't share the same views as they do, in what world such thing is fine?
      I guess hatred is good when it helps strengthen the forces of some beliefs.

      Also it was so petty of hasan to attack dark viper au's looks. Like hasan is so narcissistic and you can see it when he gets mad or defensive. He's like LOT OF WOMEN WANT S*X WITH ME OWWWWWWWWWNED. Or once I saw him say to a twitch commenter your gf or wife however much you think they love you would cheat on you with me. Like that is some manosphere Andrew Tate kind of thing to say. Hasan really thinks he's not toxically masculine because he has a picture of him wearing a dress or he paints his nails sometimes which is the most shallow view of toxic masculinity. He uses people's looks to attack them and he uses s*x or just women in general as status symbols to insult others. You will honestly never see someone's true self until they're mad or defensive and I don't like what I saw from Hasan.

    • @Managable_Mayhem
      @Managable_Mayhem 8 месяцев назад

      @@addison_v_ertisement1678 You missed the point as to WHY people call it piggy backing to begin with.
      React channels, those people are talking negatively about here, essentially just play clips or videos from other people while not contributing anything but an occassional "Oh!", "Aha." or "LOL did you see that chat?". They do NOT put anything into the video. Commentary and other (the good) reaction channels comment their thoughts, feelings, go on tangents and tells stories they are reminded of by the clip, they throw in their two cents to a topic adressed in the video and ultimately they contribute something to the entire video seen that interests people.
      This is VASTLY different from XQC and co just sitting there (or not even being present) and having other people's work entertain their audience on Twitch and co.
      Again, we are talking about the people that do not put anything into the video except for other people's content and an occassional word or two. NOT channels that fill 1/3rd or more than half of their entire video with commentary and transformative content. Those two are vastly different from one another. I fail to see how you can miss that crucial point here.
      Again, this is all about people who's content consists of OTHER people's work to a ridiculous degree. Saying that commentary content like in this video is the same as XQC playing someone else's video for 1 hour while he goes to take a shit is absolutely ridiculous in many ways.
      I think you need to realize that piggy backing is not what you think it means. Not if THIS is seriously your definition of it.
      That's like saying Van Gogh stole artwork from Da Vinci simply because both decided to have a sky depicted in their paintings. Similar aspects in the matter does NOT equal the same problem.

    Reactors are going to hate this idea, but I think a moral way to try and help out smaller creators, that I've seen done before by people like Ludwig etc, is to stop watching before the finale or end point of the video, with line like "if you want to know what happens, go check out their channel, links in the description". This not only shouts the original creator out, directs viewers to watch their content, but also specifically gives an incentive for the audience to do so. I know it's tricky, because it's essentially "blue balling" the audience, but if it works to give the video creator the exposure they deserve, I think it's worth it.
    All of this depends on the reactors morals though. Do they have big enough balls to do the right thing?

    • @addison_v_ertisement1678
      @addison_v_ertisement1678 8 месяцев назад

      Well, what happens if something they want to critique is at the ending? As an example, if you ever watches Helleva Boss, the episode Seeing Stars specifically, there's a moment where Luna takes a nut-shot at Blitz. This goes against what she was saying about fathers in general, that her dad (Blitz) is at least trying to take care of her, and genuinely cares about her. If the channel cuts it off here (or maybe even worse, when Luna has a whole paragraph about how her and Octavia should see their fathers), then that would not only cut them off from criticizing the episode, but also the entire series.
      So, why not just have it so that the react channels can tell RUclips that they are reacting to a specific video, and have a big portion of the view revenue for the react video go towards the original video?

  • @TheFuckingKrayz
    @TheFuckingKrayz 9 месяцев назад +4

    Ι think a good idea to solve this problem would be to "share impressions" from the react video to the original, so if a react video starts popping off because of the reactor's subscriber views pouring in, those same views could be assigned to the original so it would start popping off too.

    The one exception to the “Everyman reaction” that you mentioned is reacting to trailers/ free events.
    The reason why is a lot of those events (such as the game awards or Nintendo directs) serve solely as advertising, as they want you to buy their product. They don’t plan to make money off of that ad directly, so a streamer reacting to it actually does help the creator in that case.

    Another great video, Jimmy! I love your channel :)) You bring up an amazing defense for channels like yours that I totally agree with. I say if you can watch the original of something and have a takeaway that's different then a commentary or reaction then you're in the right direction. I also appreciate the difference between transformative reaction and transformative commentary because the former can be done "on the fly". A gynecologist I really like on RUclips, Mama Doctor Jones, I believe does that. It seems to me she finds the clips of content (that she does credit) and uses that specific portion and will talk about it from her perspective as a professional without anything pre-prepared, making it transformative reaction as she does it without a script prepared but also brings something new to the table that I wouldn't have gotten as a viewer without her input. Whereas the channels like yours and the ones you showed as you spoke about transformative commentary have to dig through several sources and write a script beforehand to take existing content and then analyze and synthesize in order to create something new therefore qualifying as transformative. I can't simply watch xQc's entire channel and have come away with the exact takeaway I got from this video you made, which proves how videos like yours are not only ethical but have inherit value to them.
    What I don't get is why someone would want to watch someone's "reaction" video when it's not transformative? I would think it gets annoying and distracting to try and watch content yourself for the first time and someone just adds in the occasional "oooo" and "ahhh I see" every once in awhile. Does it have anything to do with people wanting to watch this content in some kind of group setting to be less alone? Or is there something else that'd make it appealing? Because at face value I don't understand why someone wouldn't just want to watch the original especially if it's technically shorter, better quality since it isn't a re-upload, and lacks any distractions via another person "reacting" to it.
    I'd get it if the original source was either unreachable to an audience (such as being banned in their country) or if they were avoiding paying for it (not that I condone it, but I get why people would be willing to watch lesser quality if they could see a movie for free, for example). But a video on RUclips is accessible to everyone is most cases, right?
    As for exposure, it kinda sounds like maybe for really small channels it might get them attention, even help "blow them up", but mid-sized channels it only serves to hurt their revenue. Even so, if you're not being transformative in your work then I don't see how it's protected by the fair use policy.
    But if these reactors genuinely wanted to support other creators then a collab would be the better option, right? That's how I find other creators at least.
    These reactors who aren't transformative I think will end up out of a job soon. To be honest, I may be missing something big since I don't fully understand their appeal in the first place, but I genuinely do not see how this "job" wont be utterly replaced by AI here shortly. But people who actually transform work can't be fully replaced by AI.
    I know AI is a discussion in of itself and this barely scratches the surface of the topic, but I do wonder how AI is going to change these everyman "reaction" channels as Jimmy calls them. Maybe they'll even switch to using AI themselves and do even less work than they do now, I wonder? I imagine someone is going to attempt to set up a bot that searches for content to reupload with a AI bot that "reacts" to it in "their style" and then puts that video up on their channel all on its own without the original "creator" having to lift a finger. While I do think AI can be used a positive tool, I think it can be exploited in some nasty ways and both are worth talking about.

    I totally agree about there being two different types of reaction channels, though even in your "Everyman" react videos you can get some generally good content, though much like many things on RUclips you have to dig, I personally enjoy reaction videos, as I watched the original video, and I want to see what someone else thinks, theorize etc. How I often tell the good from the worst is usually length. original video is ten minutes, the react video better be twenty or thirty.

    When you consider the line "I get my ideas from my fans" then its ironic that we have this beef between Sniperwolf and Jack's Films. His content has definitely been inspired by his fans like with the your grammar sucks or LWIAY series that couldn't be made without his fans. Sniperwolf is getting help steal from fans, or stealing from fans, while Jack is adding his own creative flair to what he's given by his fans.

    GREAT researchand video m8 ...i would also recommend looking into EFAP and Jay exci on this topic for anyone who has the time. Jay still to this day having one of the best videos on the subject, revolving around the previous wave of freebooting push-back between Hasan and herself and EFAP covering it for around 40+ hours (Covering Hasan, responding to Denims and Ahrelevant, and covering the Xqc vs Ethan debate) and MauLer, main host of EFAP himself debating xqc and Destiny on the debate prep stream.
    Jay has a more chill stance and EFAP going hardcore focuding on the principles of freebooting content.

    Your video on this issues is so insightful and very well edited. I hope you'll grow bigger as a creator.
    But please, this is important, don't be a weirdo. Don't EVER talk to your fans inappropriately. Happened too many times...

    Great video but one thing missed that I think is insanely important is to point out that at least until (maybe) platforms like RUclips get around to taking action on this, the VIEWER needs to be accountable for the aspect in which we are able to control, by NOT WATCHING obviously ripped content and vocally denouncing guilty parties.

    RUclips should implement a special category of video publishing, where if you reacted to a content, you would select "Reaction" and link the video(s) you reacted to.
    This way RUclips would split the revenue share and pay those creators as well (as long as they normally get paid), and show their videos to your recommended tab after watching a reaction of them.
    And we will also know when a popular (or any) "content" creator puts their reaction videos under that category. It wouldn't be surprising to see people not select that category and hog all the revenue to themselves and be exposed for it. This way, even when the "react" content is absolute turd, at least we will know if the creators get paid.
    oh, the video? *damn, thats crazy*
    I saw a comment similar to this after writing this, I'm sorry I didn't know they wrote it, I'm not stealing I swear! D:

    A while back, a German RUclipsr did a series of time intensive and long videos that were really popular and had lots of reactions, some uploaded pretty quickly/reacted to almost immediately on twitch, so he asked the react channels to wait (a week? I don’t remember) before uploading to RUclips so his video didn’t have to compete with theirs and they adhered to that ask afaik. So it can be done without harming others. This way the original creator gets their reward for their hard work and you can still get your favorite react RUclipsrs input if you so wish

    11:22 Internet Anarchist's video dips less on the day of the freebooting compared to the steeper downward slope before, not making a case for freebooting but I'm just saying they misinterpreted the graph

    6:08 thing is that the people who ask for these reactions rage out whenver someone pauses the video. Its not just the reactors themselves, although, obviously, they are the main responsible people, but its the viewers that demand the people to be played straight through and with no imput. That is where the term "Pause Andy" comes from, a derogatory term for reactors that pause the video they are watching too much.

    xQc especially sucks because you can tell he's NEVER had to worry about money in the slightest, and he genuinely thinks the idea of people working incredibly hard for just a few bucks is funny and ridiculous, not scary. he simply cannot fathom the concept of working for your money.
