      @isaburntcake 10 месяцев назад +170

      But doesn’t the first statement speak to his unreliability? By saying you are a friend of the victim that means your content is very biased therefore unreliable. Not that it’s untrue, but that it may be twisted or missing parts of the whole story. Saying you are an observer is also true for him. He is not involved in this situation, he is platforming it after getting it first hand, which shouldn’t have done so quickly. Nick is a secondary source, not a primary one. Both statements speak to potential issues in his content.

      @@just_a_silly_little_guy It should be the same one, about Sorb3t and Berry-chan. With Berry being a White woman who is learning Japanese/embracing Japanese culture and has a Japanese boyfriend, Nick makes a remark about how he thinks it’s all very fetishizing, but what Berry is doing very obviously isn’t wrong if you listen to Japanese people’s views and know anything about Japan. Plus, it’s very normal to assimilate into your S/O’s culture, or at least participate in parts of it. A few comments point out how regressive it is to insinuate a White person shouldn’t be with a POC. It struck me as incredibly ignorant to act as if appreciation equals appropriation.
      Edit: There is also a live he did with HasanAbi where they react to TikToks of the girls talking to fans/doing their response calls and dance clips of Sorb3t on stage where they just mock them, two grown men making fun of three young girls having fun. Ick. They’re kaigai idols, apparently that’s the “joke,” but if they were adhering to Western standards nobody would care. Most Japanese love and welcome kaigai idols. It’s Westerners losing their minds on behalf of the Japanese who don’t even care.

      Final edit- Never mind. It's not worth my emotional balance to have y'all demonizing me for saying something based on my own traumatic experiences. I acknowledged that I have bias from my personal experience, and you folks are just chill making me feel like shit for some reason. Neat. Guess Nick isn't the only one who talks a big game but has kindness and understanding in short demand. Honestly I wouldn't have even felt so bitter if y'all showed as much empathy as you like to pretend you have.
      Things I have learned from making one comment in poor taste: It's okay to delegitimize someone's personal experiences, diagnosis, and trauma, as long as you perceive moral superiority over them.
      A post script after taking time to step back:
      Call it a compulsion, or an overwhelming feeling of need to be understood after experiencing years of my words being twisted to isolate me and paint me as someone I'm not, but I do want to make some of my thoughts clear. I do not, nor have ever felt, that mental illness should be demonized. As someone who still struggles every day with disordered thoughts and feelings and whose specific diagnosis (which I am not comfortable stating because I don't trust people not to use it to hurt me) is commonly joked about and made fun of, I understand the stigma. I live with the weight of it every day. To say that I am "weaponizing" my diagnosis when I am trying to express that I am more that aware of what people like myself face feels like a slap in my face. Yes, I do think Nick could be a narcissist or perhaps a sociopath. I don't say that from a place of ignorance, I say it because I have experience the very specific kinds of abuse and manipulation that people who have those disorders or have such tendencies perpetrate. I am not alone. There are so many people whose lives have been destroyed by consistent and specific lying and gaslighting and emotional abuse. I have experienced DARVO. I have also seen the other side, the charisma and the fun personality. The way they make you believe that they are a good person so anyone who speaks a word against must be a terrible person. To say that my, and by extension so, so many others' experiences are nothing more than "anecdotes" is beyond invalidation. Such abuse can trigger mental health issues, including depression, chronic anxiety, disordered eating, and so much more. I do not want a pity party. I want people to understand that advocating for people with mental health struggles doesn't only mean when it's convenient for you. It means listening and trying to understand why someone is reacting the way they are. It means understanding that there are no "perfect victims". Ultimately, making a holier than thou reply is nothing but performative. I feel like most of those reactions don't come from people who genuinely care about people with mental illness. They're more concerned about being self-righteous and dishing out perceived justice. Think what you want about me, but don't you dare delegitimize the very real experiences of people who have felt the wrath of a narcissist, sociopath, or psychopath. They get enough of that from everyone else in their lives that have been manipulated against them.

I despise how he pretends to present information unbiasedly while sprinkling information in here and there while failing to present firm opinions on the situation and then ending the video as if he's said everything he needed to say and presented fair arguments when he really said a whole bunch of nothing. It's like he's playing middleman but also trying to seem like he's presenting some kind of alternative analysis of the drama or video, but it fails to land. I hopped on the Nick train when he did collabs with Danny, Drew, and Kurtis. As I've seen other people say in the comments, I believe I instantly had a liking for him because I associated him with these other commentary RUclipsrs that I greatly respect and admire. I never quite understood why, but the longer I was a subscriber of him, the more I started to avoid his videos. I'd save them to watch later and promise that I'd get to them but would never actually watch them. I just found that he gave off some vibe that I didn't like. He was funny in the beginning and I honestly enjoyed watching his content, but as it went on it felt like a chore to watch his videos and I didn't find anything about him likable anymore. I realize now that this sudden mood shift towards how I felt about him was as he got more popular and gained this ego. I always felt like I wanted to unsubscribe and just leave his content behind but I'd feel bad because I didn't see any valid reasons to dislike him. I see now that I just couldn't put the name to it, but this video has helped me clearly see it. I'm glad someone is talking about this and making sure people are aware. It is super messed up that Nick decided to use Matt and Ryan's grieving process against them. When my father died, I used to (and still do) make a lot of really dark jokes about his battle with brain cancer. It got to the point where one of my friends made a comment that it seemed like I had moved in from his death way too quickly (mind you, earlier that day i was bawling my eyes out because a song reminded me of my father). Jokes are a natural way to process grief. My dad would've made the same jokes and I know he would've laughed at the jokes I made. When he first got his cancer diagnosis, he got a pet fish and he made a joke about "who would die first. Me or the fish?"
    Jokes don't mean that you didn't care about that person. In fact, to me, it can show that you and that other person were super close. Close enough that you feel comfortable making fucked up jokes that help you process the death because you know they wouldve loved it as well

However, I’m always skeptical whenever a man makes their whole platform about supporting women because these online male feminists always end up turning out to be phony and not care about any of the stuff they say. Nick’s terrible coverage of all of this and then throwing Lex under the bus at the end shows no indication of someone who actually cares about women. Maybe he cared when he started his channel, but I feel like having a majority female audience got to his head and makes him think he’s a spokesperson for women and therefore anyone that criticized him is sexist.

You can be progressive (which really should make you supportive of women's rights without stating it outright) and you can be an ally, but I feel like a male claiming that they have any authority on the female experience is something we should be avoiding.
      Again, males can and should be allies, but feminism today is a lot more nuanced than just fighting for equality, and I don't think there is anything a man can add to the conversation that can make a change outside of introducing the topic.

      I kind of get the vibe (as a woman, lgbt) some channels just feel off with going overboard with the subject. It makes me uncomfortable to be honest. There are a lot of channels that I enjoy that are "left leaning" but don't turn it into their entire channel. Making borderline fükt jokes, it feel much more natural, because jokes coming from a good place or just pure improve. Nick I never connected with, even before this drama, just because how forced it felt. Nick is young (around my age) and as Jimmy points out in this video, if you are going into commentary and have Nick's size of platform even if you are young yeah... you are going to reach a fanbase that is way more influenced (me included) by just what I like to call "drama preaching". BTW: I will never get this: ok soo they post "truck simulators because the views are down" but "I have a real job" *recent uploads cherry picked "cringe woke guys tiktoks reaction"* . Again there is only so much you can do on this platform, yes, but I rarely see these genre of channels taking real action in private (offline) in the case of S.A., mental health whatever (and I don't expect them to). Voilà, just my rant, now I am going to work on my apology video playing two kazoos through my nostrils.

    I think the most telling moment for me (as a relatively recent subscriber of his, unsubscribed now) was when he reacted to the video of the woman on the plane (“that motherfucker is not real”). He said that if it were a mental health episode, she should’ve warned everyone beforehand that she has mental health issues. I was so shocked by that ignorant suggestion, like… he repeatedly stated mentally ill people need to warn others about potential breakdowns or panic attacks because it could freak out the strangers around them. I could tell at that point he was just talking out of his ass. I’m not exaggerating when I say that he was going on and on about mentally ill people needing to disclose their diagnoses in public to a crowd. As if that wouldn’t be immediately called attention seeking? As if that wouldn’t be more disruptive and awkward?

    • @lqpluie
      @lqpluie 9 месяцев назад +429

      but also, why would we tell strangers about our mental health problems? we can't prevent a psychosis episode or a panic attack, usually. so it doesn't make sense. and plus, the woman did no harm to anyone during her episode. i honestly hate how the internet made fun of her, when we don't know what she's going through. imo, people online have gotten way more comfortable with making fun of others these past few years. the "love surge" video is the proof that people will literally make fun and be mean over anything! that couple is so sweet and it's clear they love each other. yet, the woman got death threats and horrible comments said just because of that video and the way she acts with her husband. when all they do is just... share their love online. and people were calling it cringey and sending death threats etc. like, if someone isn't harming anyone, and they're sharing things they love, their interests etc. we shouldn't make fun of them. as for the woman on the plane, imo, we shouldn't make fun of people without knowing their stories first. sure, at first it was funny, for some. but who knows what she was going through? sorry for rambling, haha.

There is a time and a place for these kinds of discussions, and an unrelated channel is not one of them.
      Not only does it dilute the seriousness of the issue, but it's also extremely weird for the people who may already be versed in these topics to hear about something they already know and agree with; if anything, it feels like rage bait to me. Besides, imagine you're NOT educated on these topics--how fucking strange would it be to go from years of "teehee meme video" to "hey just a reminder murder is bad :/". Like hey man, we know. And then I watched his most recent video at the time and I couldn’t help but think “oh…. He’s just… mean” it sounds stupid said like that, but considering he is in the same type of content as Danny and Drew, it immediately hit me how neither of them would ever talk this way about the person they were covering. Creators have a responsibility with the content they put out into the world to thousands and thousands of people; we have the power to cause a lot of harm if we don't treat our content with care. So many creators get lost in the pursuit of views and revenue that they don't stop to think about the consequences. If you're gonna dish it out, people are going to dish it back.

The way he would cut things and blatantly lie is absolutely insane. Also hugely against the way they acted about matt and ryans grieving via comedy and even being mad at the deceased those are such normal stages to go through, it really feels like he's never lost someone and can't comprehend that not everyone reacts the same and that the stages are less a road and more a roulette wheel on any given day.

    2:32 Literally! I used to be a huge fan, until about 2 years ago. Nick has a friend Ro who was trying to break into the commentary sector as well, and I made a comment on one of their videos saying the actual start of the video was @ the 8min mark, implying the intro took entirely to long. Admittedly unnecessary, but harmless. Ro responded to my comment on YT, then went on to post it on Twitter where I just so happen to come across it because it said “liked by nick green”, and I followed him. I responded to Ro’s tweet that called me out for being a “troll” essentially, and doubled down on not only what I said, but also how the YT comment had my first and last name in it, and that it was incredibly unnecessary and weird for them to post this on Twitter especially because they had already commented back on YT and I didn’t say anything super negative to begin with. In response to the my name thing, Nick QT’d my post, and said something along the lines of “if you cared about your privacy don’t leave mean comments” (idr exactly all of this has since been deleted) that Insighted people to say some crazy shit to me. Once people actually started to stand up for me and agree with me when I tweeted back saying it’s not that I care about my privacy, I understand that I made a public comment, it’s about the unequal power imbalance between some random girl (me) vs. two creator’s fan bases for something so insignificant is actually so crazy. The OG post was then deleted, and Ro “apologized” and said they over reacted due to stress, and insecurity over being a new creator essentially (again, idr exactly) Nick (who’s fans said more than Ro’s) said nothing, and I had randoms in my inbox for weeks. Luckily for me, I didn’t take the weird shit they said to me seriously, but just imagining someone else who might not have as tough of skin in that position makes me sad. It’s real loser energy, and I feel like he actually doesn’t understand the power he yields by having such a self righteous fan base who will pop off on anyone who says anything opposing or criticizing. People disagree all the time, and some people aren’t nice about it. That doesn’t give him the right to sick his fans on anyone he feels “deserve” it.

    I hate how Nick's behavior is simultaneously disappointing and not surprising, I genuinely hate it. I was subscribed to him and actively watched him a few years ago, during the pandemic, when he'd make more lighthearted funny commentary videos, but eventually unfollowed way before the situation with SuperMega because the way he acted was already coming off the wrong way for me. He started having this "holier than thou" attitude even with small things, and like the only way you'd disagree with him on his OPINIONS (not facts) is if you're stupid or actively malicious, which really didn't sit well with me. As well as the overt performative feminism - everytime I see a guy who's THIS vocal about feminism, I always get the feeling that he's just using it to boost his own image, and Nick was doing exactly that. Honestly, Nick was given a good start because he was (i believe) one of Kurtis Conner's editors in the past. And because he had collabs with Kurtis, Drew, and Danny it helped boost the fans opinion of Nick. Because Kurtis, Drew, and Danny are so beloved by the commentary youtube community, and they made videos with Nick, it made a bias in the fans' minds that Nick is a good guy, just like them.
    But as Nick started posting higher volume and lower quality, you could see the flaws more in his opinions and his words. Like.. I originally only watched his videos because of his collab with Kurtis. Yet, the more I watched Nick the more I thought that he wasn't researching anything he was talking about. He seems to even lie about things that are easily proven false. It's bizarre.
    He made me feel so uncomfortable in the video where he was laughing at Sorb3t and Berry-chan.. because like?? Cringe is not a crime. But he acts like people deserve to be bullied for being cringe. Which made me sad. Like.. you can poke fun at things you find cringey without being an asshole. Like.. to me, Nick feels like he has been trying to roll with the "big boys" but doesn't seem to actually understand the integrity and authenticity that these larger and more liked commentary channels have. If that makes sense? He just seems like a little brother trying to keep attention on him but fumbling when there's consequences because he's used to just being given a pass for being a generally good person or coddled by his family/friends..

      Especially when the “big three” (Kurtis, Danny, and Drew) never actually come off as mean-spirited in their videos. When they make videos about weird TikToks, bad movies, or internet personalities, they always poke fun at the CONTENT and not the PERSON, in a way that avoids feeding into or encouraging bullies. Hell, even Kurtis made a video exploring the harm done by cringe culture as a response to his own past jokes. So many of Nick’s videos (Sorb3t, “Love Surge”, etc) feel like typical cringe culture “point and laugh” cruelty, just with the “drama commentary” label slapped on.

      Yeah this is accurate. I think I was introduced to him in a video of Danny's where he barely did anything. It can be hard to tell how bad his takes are at first because his content is styled like he's just having a chat with his viewers, so you subconsciously kind of forgive the relaxed/unprofessional nature of it. It's also kind of boring af content so it's easy to space out and miss things...
      But yeah, if you watch a few videos of his you really quickly realize that there's something super off about him. I couldn't really put my finger on what it was, and I wouldn't have pegged him for a liar or someone who colludes to lie about people, but I can't say it surprises me I guess.

      Journalists don’t get to choose what goes on air/into publication anyway. Even if they present a fully unbiased story to an editor, that can be ripped to shreds and mostly the journalist appears responsible for the public backlash.
      Basically, Nick actively chooses what he posts and takes even less responsibility than a journalist who can’t.

So much for being a champion for women experiencing harassment on the internet. "Yeah, people have been saying they hope you get SA'd, but you're annoying so fuck you." im not a big Nickisnotgreen fan and i haven't watched the full video yet but also i watched the video that clip is from and it was severely misrepresented here. he was clearly not trying to blame her or anything, he was just trying to explain how he thought it came off. In an unscripted format like that video, its a lot easier to take clips of it out of context, but overall he was clear she didn't deserve the harassment, and was only in that moment pointing out that it was a very internet-illiterate move that might have exacerbated the controversy.
      As someone who actually watched the original video, i can say truly he didn't come off as annoyed, and wasn't saying anything close to "yeah, people have been saying they hope you get SA'd but you're annoying so fuck you" the only reason that clip gives off that vibe is because it was mischaracterized to present an argument. I don't blame you for taking this message away from that section, it's more Jimmy Robbin's fault for being dishonest or irresponsible with that clip.
      I don't claim to say this proves anything about the video as a whole's accuracy, but it has certainly left a bad impression, that taints the rest of the video with a callous misrepresentation

Look into what happened if you don't already know. Jimmy does not care about women. Nickisnotgreen might not be perfect, but his biggest sin is being kind of mean and not very funny. Jimmy straight up refuses to believe women if they are victims. Kind of despicable in my opinion.

      @weezerfan1232 8 месяцев назад

      im so sorry for leaving THREE replies lol, but this video is filled with similar situations. He will take something nick said fully out of it's original context, and then rephrase it in his own words. He does this so poorly every time that he inadvertently called a woman's SA a "personal grudge." it deeply upsets me that you could watch this video and think that the person who is actively harming his reputation and livelihood to defend and show his support for a SA victim (his friend) is the one who pretends to be a champion for women. Jimmy has made multiple videos calling SA and abuse victims (who are women) liars, and is using the guise of being "the one not-sexist nickisnotgreen critic" to make some of the most obvious and worst misrepresentations i've ever seen. I never thought I would be defending nickisnotgreen but here i am because this comment section has the least rhetorical literacy in any place imaginable. Insane.

What I now see as a "holier than thou" "only one right answer" attitude I interpreted back then as a guy with really strong morals and values, and I admired that. Now after this, I look back on it distastefully. I felt cheated when this surfaced and had hoped his response would have been sufficient given that he openly criticizes so many people's apologies. Bro imma say it, Nick came off EXTREMELY ableist during the love surge drama. The way that couple described "Love surge" is extremely similar to something a lot of Nerodivergent folk experience regarding strong bouts of emotions. I have several disorders, the way my emotions work varies much differently to the average NT. I can go days without feeling anything, and other times, I can get these massive surges of emotions that do genuinely affect me physically. I can get the "love surges" through viewing something or someone I love dearly, where even the sight of someone I care about will shoot a huge ass chunk of dopamine in my brain and I get shakey and excited. I need to talk to them, to hold them, be near them, because of how much they make me happy.
    And seeing a huge ass bunch of people see that as cringey hurts. Perhaps the way the couple acted in the video is a little cringey, but they were just showing a part of themselves in a wholesome manner. And they got bullied for it.
    And now I know another part of my ND is also unacceptable in the eyes of the public, and the next time I get one of those surges, its going to be automatically cut short and dropped into a deep depression when I remember Im not suppose to love someone like that.
    So thanks, Nick. Thanks for telling others your essentially a freak for experiencing emotions the "wrong way". I had a "hate surge" watching your damn video.

It’s one thing to see someone do something unusual and think to themselves “well that was pretty weird” and move on. It’s a completely different thing to make an entire video making fun of that person and post it for a million followers to see and ridicule. People like this are all about how “mental health matters, bullying is bad” but apparently bullying is okay if the person deviates even a tiny bit from their definition of normal

So many people, myself included, chimed in on why this is (or should be) a fine and normal thing. @@belladonnarose5671 In the nicest way possible, if your response to someone trying to clarify a subject is "what's wrong with X/did X do something wrong?", then you are part of the problem. Think critically and let a situation unfold before coming to the conclusion that something is clearly wrong, when it likely is not.
      Even if something WAS wrong, you cannot generalize an entire group of people who are innocent in theory. For example: men who are sexist are bad, but that doesn't mean men are the problem--it's sexism. Rushing to conclusions is why we still cannot focus on the core problem, which is bigotry. Saying "(X people) is the problem" instead of "(Z issue) is the problem" is prejudiced and problematic.
      If you want clarification or information, never ask "what's wrong with X?". Ask "Can you elaborate on what you mean?". Otherwise you're bound to get misinformation to fuel an uneducated opinion.

    I feel like these kinds of content creators do harm to the movements they supposedly represent, because they give detractors ammunition to discount everything they say, even when their analysis is correct. Furthermore, instead of fostering a culture of actual critical thinking, they train their audiences to rely on broad statements and thought terminating cliches. This, in my opinion, makes their audiences vulnerable to manipulation and coercion, as long as it's presented with a progressive facade.
    Nick is far from the only one in his circle to engage in deception and manipulation... Which is a shame, because as a leftist myself, I want to see leftist content creators be more responsible with their platforms.

    • @Mi-be1os

      Completely agree! A creator should always encourage their audience to be critical and think for themselves. Garnering such a toxic mindset only muddies the waters when it comes to extremely serious topics like SA and, ultimately only hurts victims further in my opinion...

      Agreed wholeheartedly. It's especially prevalent for these types of content creators because their explicit targets are people who already agree with them. They don't *need* to foster a culture of critical thinking - make arguments and learn to be more persuasive - like other types of content creators because they'll get the bag for just saying thing their base will already agree with. And their bases are often, ironically, puritanical and all too willing to ostracize and develop in-groups and out-groups automatically around themselves and others in some perpetual never-ending regress.
      Their platform is fundamentally more about the entertainment and the development of their own cults-of-personality that we're just supposed kind of just have to hope doesn't stray into the insane thanks to their progressive aesthetic.

    • @mahogara
      @mahogara 10 месяцев назад +19

      Sometime I wonder if they really are supporting and standing with those movements because they actually care and believe in them or are doing so because it's popular to do so. Because it's easier to find audiences, have people like you and make money from it. No matter what the state of the Internet look now, most people are generally left-leaning. I wonder if they had been creators in early 2010s, would they be making contents punching down on women and minorities? I wonder if things were just a little bit different, would they be right wing grifters? Because most of the time, they come across as someone chasing what is trendy, popular and easiest to go viral and gain a following rather than someone representing progressive movements.

      @@romanafuldher7924 they specified "right-leaning" because usually the people who go after nick are right-leaning guys who specifically attack Nick for being vocal about his (supposed) progressive, left-leaning stances (e.g. him supporting feminism). From what ive seen, these guys don't make genuine, good-faith criticisms and cohesive arguments against the flaws in Nick's actions and character, instead they attack him for being left-leaning / progressive / "woke". For example, instead of criticising him for being a performative feminist who doesnt actually stand by what he claims to believe, they attack him for being a feminist. This youtuber however doesnt just attack Nick for being left-leaning, he criticises Nick for being performative about it.

      @@romanafuldher7924 Its a massive stretch to say that just because someone used to watch and like Nick's videos, and Nick was later revealed to be bad guy, then they must be subscribed to a bunch of horrible people. Nick seems like a normal decent guy at first in most of his videos (except for a few like that love surge video, but he received alot of backlash from his fans for that vid), so if it weren't for the supermega drama his fans would have never known what a shitty person he is, so i dont think ex-fans should be blamed just because they used to like his content. This is a pretty unique situation, I doubt that many of the other youtubers that they are subscribed to are secretly like Nick.

His misogyny is barely concealed at this point. I feel like people will eventually come forward about their experiences with him because he really gives off abuser red flags nonstop. Okay let’s relax a little bit. I get this video has people all fired up but it’s just a fact that the internet makes it easier to have diminished empathetic responses to people you’ve never met or interacted with face-to-face (I’m talking specifically about Nick being a bellend). I mean, I don’t get the best vibes from him and it’s certainly possible he’s all of that and worse; it’s also possible (imo more likely) that he’s just overly immature for his age and kind of an asshole on his channel because that’s the brand of content he’s fallen into. And it’s his own fault for putting himself in a social environment where people can be accused of the worst behavior in society and everyone just runs with it. I’m just saying let’s not feed into that.
