  • SuperMega has been facing controversy for a month thanks to videos released by lex updog and nickisnotgreen. And this has escalated into drama that risks taking down SuperMega entirely.
This is a video essay explaining the drama behind SuperMega, and nickisnotgreen's role in spreading misinformation.

refreshing to see someone's take on this that isn't just shitting on lex and doubting her abuse story. i think nick and the others took advantage of how lex felt and weaponized that, so its nice to see someone making a video about how you can both be a victim and be hurt and angry while also doing wrong to others

I'm VERY surprised that nickisnotgreen has risen to the relevance that he has. I used to watch him when he made silly, unserious commentary videos similar to Danny Gonzalez or Drew Gooden, but when he posted about changing his content because he doesn't feel creatively challenged, I stuck around for a couple weeks. After his first few political and drama related videos, I unsubscribed because it is SO obvious that he is insanely biased, is very convinced he's a moral role model to others, and had very half-baked, empty arguments for his opinions. This was about two years ago, but since then, I've heard more and more abt him from newer fans saying he's getting worse and has bad takes. I'll be honest, even when he made more casual content, he was a red flag and gave off the impression that he felt highly of himself and that his opinion carried an important weight.

Generally, I have zero issue with political or feminist content. His in particular just seems very performative because in defending one woman, he ends up acting in a way that I think is harmful to many others. Now sure, it's been a while since those collabs and I wouldn't be surprised if some of those creators will not collab with him ever again after this whole thing, but what's sadder (unless they want the videos deleted) is those videos will still be up on his channel for anyone to find, and anyone in the commentary fandom who's not informed on this specific situation could assume that Nick is a trustworthy individual, not realizing how biased and petty he can get.

I used to like Nickisnotgreen but nowadays I can't watch them because they're so boring and repetitive in the way they talk and react to things. They're parroting what their audience wants to hear and feeding the hate, not exactly good faith journalism by any means. Excellent video Jimmy, I appreciate your objective take on issues like this. Holy shit I didn't expect to hear about Daniel again after all these years... That hurt my heart. Matt and Ryan could have handled some things a lot better, but they're not perfect.
Lex should not have been assaulted. No one deserves that, and I really hope she can heal and that the man who assaulted her falls down some stairs. But her attacking them this way, and going the lengths she did to slander them is bullshit. Nick just sucks as a person. His content is slapped together and he himself admits in several videos that he doesnt spend a lot of time researching what he talks about. Honestly it feels like Nick is just looking to benefit from everything Lex has put out about SuperMega.

It’s times like this that I wish people were more aware of the rape case of Alice Sebold, author of The Lovely Bones. Rape and SA are SERIOUS issues that needs to be handled delicately and with nuance, but when the internet and public get involved, that hardly seems to happen, and it often times horrifically feeds in to more people being victimized. Reading the story of her case is why I will ALWAYS believe a victim, but won’t immediately condemn whoever they say attacked them.
(For those unaware, a rape kit and documented physical trauma confirmed Alice had been raped. She was VERY confident that she could identify her rapist. So she did.
Except, the man she identified was innocent. He wasn’t her rapist.
DNA collected from the rape kit confirmed it about twenty years later.
Now, an innocent man is also a survivor of rape, having been assaulted numerous times as many sexual predators are in prison. The number of victims doubled, because nobody did any investigating. THIS is why nuance matters.
Thank you for coming to my TEDTalk)

The grossest thing to me is that while Matt and Ryan are clearly not perfect, Lex has the gall to say they made her homeless. Cost of living in LA is insane, but how was she living for months in the office without saving up at all? The problem with most of these drama/commentary channels is the same problem that mainstream news stations have: It's all performative, biased, and most of all, for profit. Everyone wants to be first to break the story so they can get the most attention and make the most money, which means a lot of jumping to conclusions without knowing the full facts. Being first also let's you direct the narrative that most people will be exposed to, and then appeal to their little clique of friends that benefit from siding with them.
No one actually wants to know the truth, and they take advantage of that to make the situation worse. Every exposed youtuber is just another bounty they collect for their own pockets as they move on to the next person that gets cancelled, while relishing in looking like a good person by comparison, even if everything they said is muddled by misinformation.

There honestly just seemed to be a lot of holes and misdirection all around. The bias was outrageous on Nick's part and im not particularly a fan of his "self-righteous", "holier than thou" type of personality. It just clearly shows his insane bias, even though he claims he "looked into it" and what not. He honestly sprinted at the opportunity of the drama just to gain some clout and traction to his content, in my opinion. I prefer videos like yours, where you take a clear good look at all sides before coming to a conclusion of your own. And then present it to others so they can just decide what they think for themselves. I don't particularly like clearly-biased "journalism" that is really just trying to start extra drama. Like they always say, he made an mountain out of a mole hill. If I remember correctly, I think I remember Nick even stating that he just "had to rush to make a video". Not quoted directly like that or maybe it's a different video of his, but I remember him saying that. Which is not good professionalism for journalism of "drama". Woman who's a victim of SA here! Honestly, I am disappointed in Nick for not truthfully reporting a topic and doxxing that woman. The focus was definitely taken off Don and forwarded to supermega. Now, I think the way Supermega handled it wasn't good. As a woman who's been a victim it hurts to see people in power not speak up. I do, however, think their video apologies were pretty good and I empathize that Liz had never asked for them to speak up. Overall, I think this situation is nuanced and everyone played a part in slinging shit. Nick should've disclaimed that he had bias, that he wants to create an outlet for a friend, and not inserted himself so hard esp reporting misinformation nonchalantly. I do think what Liz went thru is absolutely horrendous and I don't want to perpetuate the "perfect victim" stereotype so I won't say too much on them I just hope they're able to heal their pain because even though most see it as a vendetta I understand why she's reacting the way she is, as a victim, even if it's sometimes irrational.

She got literally harassed by his fans and even HASANHABI went after her to defend nick (and I’m pretty sure that’s why they even became acquainted) because Hasan used to do the same type of shit (idk about now, I don’t watch his streams clip anymore). Nick even made a dumbass video to defend himself, which if I remember correctly, was seen as some guy trying to be a fucking saint. I just find it insane that around two years ago, someone made those criticisms about him and he hasn’t changed, dare I say got even worse. If he continues to down this path I might become the new commentary clown of the year.

Who was this?? I remember a girl made a similar video but she was white. Nick mentioned it on twitter and she ended up going private. I didn’t know it happened more than once😭

@@sarahlee2715 I really don’t remember her name, but I think I might have followed her so I’ll look into that. And also yes this happened so many times it’s actually embarrassing for him

i saw the thumbnail of Nick's video when it released, and just ignored it because I felt like I couldn't emotionally handle it at the time. I have watched SuperMega for a while, and I believe that Matt and Ryan are generally reasonable and good people, even if their humor is edgy. Anyway, at the time i saw that Nickisnot green thumbnail, I had casually watched his videos and had a generally positive view of him. Between then and watching this video, I saw your thumbnail for your "wolf in sheep's clothing" video about Nick (which i have yet to watch as of writing this but plan to), as well as this one. And I also saw the thumbnail for the 2 plus hour feature film length Turkey Tom video- but frankly, while I'm sure it probably has a lot of good information, i value my time and do not wish to watch a video that long about the topic.
I finally got up the strength to deal with this mentally, because after the Gus Johnson situation I really have felt disallusioned about putting like or favoring or trusting any content creator. I realize from seeing thumbnails of yours about the situation that Gus Johnson may have not actually been guilty of what I thought he was back then and Sabrina did not handle the situation as well and may have even just lied... and i am willing to watch those long videos to reassess what i think of all that.
However, that is neither here nor there, as my point of this paragraph is to say that I am a trusting person, and I have found it difficult to engage in parasocial relationships and youtube/content creator drama after that situation dissalusioned me from the kind & essentially perfect person facade Gus put up. Regardless of Gus's or Sabrina's guilt, etc etc, I have realized through this situation, the SuperMega situation, and a recent personal situation involving my warranted mistrust and cutting ties from an ex-friend, who turned out to be a way worse person than I once thought, that people are complicated. People contain multitudes. And both drama and accusations of abuse should be treated with the weight they deserve, and the real truth should be sought out no matter what, **because people are always imperfect.**
I realized I was close to the situation as a fan of the SuperMega channel, which is why I have time to engage with the situation. I am now going to watch Matt and Ryan's apology videos, but probably not Nick's video because i see how he views himself as self-important now and just don't care to watch his videos or engage with him ever again.
On a related not, given Nick's and Lex's closeness to Ethan Is Online and Dev Lemons, I am going to find it difficult to reengage with that sphere of online content now. I will probably only watch and care about Dev Lemons now, as her friendship with Nick is a bit regrettable, but real life friendships are not parasocial friendships and I find it hard to judge her for that friendship, when she has shown no sign of doing anything objectionable beyond just that friendship/musician collaboration with Nick as Queef Jerky.
All of the youtube drama part aside, I am disgusted by the assaulter. I enjoyed their channel art for SuperMega for years, and their occasional presence in the channel's drunk drawing videos, but looking back I feel gross knowing they would eventually commit SA (-allegedly- I say that for legal reasons etc). I am glad Matt & Ryan cut all ties with them. Because I believe survivors, and try my very best to do so no matter the complicated circumstances. Unless there is provable and unmistakable evidence that an assault was fabricated- but even then i stay cautious, because people are good at hiding shitty things. Point is- **Believe surivors, regardless of how you feel about their actions, etc.** This mindset is how we stand firm against SA and other abuse, and change our culture one small step at a time.
Anyway, all that to say that people are complicated, trusting people irl is incredibly difficult, making trust in parasocial relationships infintiely more difficult and next to impossible. And I am tired. But wiser for it. I will no longer just take people's word for things online without thinking critically about their own biases and agenda. And I would advise you all to do the same. Peace

I remember when he posted his video it was before super mega released a statement. He mentioned the victim is a friend of his so if he clarified he would appear biased, that would be understandable. But his takes felt very intense for someone who posted before the response videos ://

I have never witnessed a more transparent attempt at a smear-piece than Lex's video. I'm sorry but if you spend 5 minutes claiming to be the victim of S.A. and 2+ hours gossiping about other people's hook-ups and complaining that you had to pick up after yourself in a place you were living rent-free, you're basically forcing anyone who watches your video to think that your assault was less traumatizing than light housework.
