2021 Porsche 911 Carrera S: The Perfect 992

  • This week I finally got behind the wheel of a 992, a beautiful spec 2021 Carrera S... the PERFECT 911!! In fact this is just about one of the best cars I've driven, simply because it is able to mesh electronics/tech with a tactile feel at an unmatched level. Most contemporary cars sacrifice "feel" for tech, not the 992. This lack of numbness is what makes the 992 stand out from the pack. But she costs a pretty penny and is beginning to reach definitive levels of unattainability.
    Luckily though, it is still a good chunk of change less than a Turbo/Turbo S, and now that the entire lineup (aside from the GT3) is twin-turbo'd, you can throw on an ECU tune and have yourself a bargain Turbo S. Even better, this C2S that I drove provides a more engaging rear wheel drive experience, and even offers Porsches RAS as an option (rear-axle steer) if you really want to lock things up around corners!
    All in all, the 992 Carrera S seems to be the pick of the litter, at least until GT3's hit the market... In all seriousness, for the average buyer, a Carrera S will more than suffice. It balances luxury, with livability, and most importantly a sensational driving experience! I would recommend this car 10/10, big W :)

      I would go GT Silver metallic and definitely the RS Spyder design wheels. To me that looks so perfect and rich. . Also I like a light colour interior. Could be red or nutmeg or ?? Plus the most comfortable seats offered whatever that is. Perhaps the 18 way? All that and a nice medium tint on the windows.

    One of the best 992 reviews I’ve seen so far, dope job bro. Just put down my deposit on my first 911, 992 C2 in chalk with glass sunroof, carrera s wheels in satin black, exclusive design tail lights, sport side skirts, high gloss black Porsche & 911 emblem, with black leather interior with guard red seatbelts, chrono & tach. Very good review and explanation of the feeling you get when driving a Porsche. To me Porsche cars just keep getting better and better with every new model refresh. The 992 has reached supercar performance levels and this 911 will hold its own against Ferrari, Aston Martin, McLaren, Lamborghini, etc. The steering feel, weight transfer, braking performance, suspension and driving dynamics of the 992 are simply amazing. It’s built with a level of precision assembly and advanced engineering that is rarely found in the automotive industry where the focus is on reducing cost and squeezing more profit out of each vehicle. Count me in as a new subscriber.

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  3 года назад +1

      I think you’re bang on! Too many manufacturers are trying to squeeze dollars out of cars in very obvious ways, Porsche is winning the reasonably priced luxury-performance segment by holding true to their standards and simply adjusting to the times. I think the Taycan is an amalgamation of these very simple Porsche standards and new expectations to compete in suddenly electrified automotive space.

    Until the Carrera T arrives to become the perfect "cheap" 992, the Carrera S is the best option. But the base Turbo with sports suspension and without sports exhaust is the 992 you really want. It's just a better driver's car than the Carrera S, they raided the motor-sports department and gave it a better chassis. So it's now much more than just a speed machine, it's the ultimate sports car for the road for people who don't want to be silly.

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  3 года назад +2

      I’ve heard the same thing about the chassis on the Turbo... and while I prefer RWD, I would probably swing it. It’s still gonna run you a solid 40 grand more than this S to be fair

    One of the best reviews I've watched, very comprehensive. I'm checking out reviews on the 991.2 and the 992 as I'm planning on getting one soon. I have a 2006 BMW M3 which I've owned since new and have loved it but I've always wanted a 911. I don't need 2 sports cars so getting ready to sell and buy, so I've been researching pre-owned local dealers. I've had many BMW's over the years as main drivers (the M3 is a weekender) and the build quality has really gone downhill. I've mostly owned 5 series and the last couple have not been great compared with past models before they got so "mainstream". Currently have an X5 and just not that impressed with BMW's anymore. Thanks for the great information!

    I think definitely the new shifter is best design! the small light design of it is pretty unique with the rest of the new interior design.
    And in the GT3 they did give a different shifter where it's a little bigger think that was well thought out.
    But the one thing I don't like is the same key fob they've had for 18yrs now lol Not to mention they don't have remote start those are my only two things I dislike 😆

      Got you!! You can't really go wrong with the GT3 in the sense that it's close to the 'ultimate' 911 - with that said, it seems like the 992 GT3 is closer to an RS, so maybe not as great for DD. If you can swing it, the Turbo S is faster than God

    A point on modding. It's much better to mod the lower power version of each engine capacity. The 3 liter S is already modded by Porsche the right way - better turbos, better brakes, bigger/wider tires and the chassis is set-up for that level of power and traction. If you go further on the S you'll end up with even more turbo lag, not enough traction, not enough brakes and a rear wheel drive chassis that wasn't made for that level of power. Now modding the Turbo is much better with the AWD, the even wider tires like the Turbo S and the much better sports chassis. If they give the future Carrera T the S brakes this time, taking that to ~500HP and upping the tire size to 20"/21" also makes more sense than modding the S.

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  3 года назад +1

      I see what you’re saying here, and I’m not a particularly huge mod’er myself... but I do think the 992 S can easily handle an appropriate ECU flash 😎👍🏼

      @ferdinandbardamu3945 3 года назад +1

      @@Reoniz
      Have you seen how a torque curve looks after a typical ECU flash? The lag increases by ~1000 RPM and you get a huge peak of torque then it goes downhill like a feminist in her 30's. By the time you arrive at redline, it doesn't feel like a sports car anymore. So you end up shifting it like a regular car.

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  3 года назад +2

      @@ferdinandbardamu3945 no I do see what you’re saying. A majority of the time, and particularly with higher end (performance oriented) cars... I’m of the belief that the manufacturer has created the best and most balanced product straight out the box and you shouldn’t tamper with it.
      With that said, I think the real strength of ECU tunes on modern FI cars is that big TQ boost you got down low that helps them feel more akin to their “bigger brothers” .. ie a slight tune on a 330i will help it feel more similar to a M340i on initial acceleration - just my opinion though

I will of course say, it ultimately is a 911, and surely won't be as comfortable as many cars out there, but what it lacks in the comfort, it makes up for with absolutely ridiculous performance and some of the best "visceral" sensations you'll get in the relatively affordable automotive space. 😎👍

    Handling. 911's have always been known as "the best handling sports car". Based on the reviews I've seen and the few I've ridden in....I do think the difference in handling IS noticeable. Even when driven by the typical driver with average (at best) driving skill not being a competition PRO driver. I mean, honestly, where will this car be driven? Or any $100k+ car? City streets where the road conditions are less than ideal..so doing a Mario Andretti impression would be foolish. An average driver will still feel the difference in handling in everyday driving with mediocre skill. That's the reality.
    Tech. Like the addition of the camera views. Not sure if there's a "object detected STOP car feature" . If not there should be. As well as "Auto Parking Assist" (parallel/perpendicular park itself and take the car out of the parked space). Some might disagree but if so many companies have spent the money to R&D "auto park assist"...then there is a demand and usefullness. In this age of high tech...WHY NOT? :)
    Should be aftermarket companies that can swap out the shift knob. Even Porsche Design. :)
    The 911 design IS classic. Better not make any drastic changes ever.
    ENGINE. Every sports car brand has a naturally aspirated model. Ferrari-812 Superfast. Lamborghini--all cars are NA. Audi-the R8. Porsche the GT3...why not a 2nd one? About theT model.
    Spending any more on a sport car IMHO is a waste of money (e.g. Ferrari, Lambo, McLaren...etc.).

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  3 года назад +5

      Well thought out comment. I definitely agree about the driving skill and driving conditions that most 911’s drivers will be experiencing!! I only slightly disagree with the excessive cameras or “auto park assist” if not because they slightly go against the ethos of the car... they certainly are a bit ridiculous on such a small car haha.
      No I completely get everything you’re a saying and agree that after driving the 992, I couldn’t imagine spending 2-3x the money for a Ferrari - I’m sure I’ll eat those words after spending some time in a Pista :))
      And I can only hope the forthcoming T (provided they make it) has an NA motor, although I do enjoy some of the trade-offs of forced induction, and don’t think it’s likely that Porsche steps away from that when the GT3 is already NA....... but they just did exactly that with the new 718 GTS so who knows ?!

    Debating C2S vs C2 - but was curious how you felt about the C2S vs the 850 that you reviewed?

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  3 года назад +7

      To be completely fair, the M850i cost the same as a mid equipped C2, and the C2S I drove was $25k more than the bimmer. That aside, they’re both great cars. For pure driving bliss, the Porsche wins hands down. However, the bimmer is more objectively luxurious and well optioned out of the box.
      Despite having more power, my butt dyno didn’t tell me it was much faster, but it did have a more muscle car characteristic and power delivery vs the Porsche being the definition of “balance”. You’re also gonna get a bit more space/practicality out of the bimmer... only matters if you need it, and it’s not night and day, but can make a difference depending on lifestyle and access to other cars.
      Lastly sound, once again the bimmer wins this one. Although the Porsche does open up nicely on full throttle, it doesn’t have the consistent grunt the bimmer has.
      All of that said, if I could, I would personally take the 992 every single time :)

      What you described is actually the difference between an S and GTS!
      The difference between an S and 4S is just all wheel drive, with the S being RWD and the 4 in the 4S standing for AWD (it used to also include wider rear fenders and a connecting taillight, but all of that is standard on the 992 anyways)

    The 911 and cars in general are cheaper than ever. A 2004 997 Carrera S started at $90,500. In today's money that's $124,400. A 2021 992 Carrera S starts at $115,100. Over $9,000 cheaper! Cars only look expensive because your country is at the end of a 50 year downward spiral of offshoring and cheap foreign labor imports and your ruling class is hell bent on keeping that up. You went from a solid middle class to young people not being able to afford a house and raise children. So a 911 is to you what a Ferrari was was to your parents.

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  3 года назад +7

      So it really depends on what you’re going for. I’m still a firm believer that a base 911 is a true purity spec vehicle, and used for around $100k it’s a fantastic value proposition. However, if you for instance want a new and more highly optioned out 911, then the natural move is to go S. Finally, if the S is all that’s in your budget, and you want the fastest, best setup 911 YOUR money can buy, then the S is obviously that. TLDR: I’d get an actual “base” Base model, or a slightly more loaded S.
