Who’s ready for an almighty Porsche 911 showdown?!
We’ve got the entry-level Porsche 911 992 going up against Porsche’s latest track monster, the GT3!
Now at first glance, you’re probably thinking this is a pointless drag race. But when you consider the two cars here have a £55,000 price difference, we thought it would be interesting to see how much more performance you get for £55k!
So how do they compare? Well starting with the 911 Carrera, it’s powered by a 3-litre twin-turbo flat-six which can deliver 385hp and 450Nm. It also weighs in at 1,505kg.
Then we have the GT3, which houses a 4-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six under the bonnet which can put down 510hp & 470Nm of torque. It’s also lighter than the Carrera, at 1,435kg.

Now that you've tested the base 992 Carrera against the GT3, I'd be interested to see a Carrera S v GTS vs GT3. Perhaps you could kick it up a notch by racing the GT3 against the Turbo or Turbo S.
Why would you race a gt3 against a turbo s? The gt3 is a track car, the turbo s is a straight line car. That race just doesn’t make sense.

As an owner of a pretty base 996, I've changed my mind about all base 911's. It's so easy to get caught up in numbers, while missing the joy of driving.
Yes - speaking of joy of driving, too bad they’re not offering the manual in the base model. That makes Carrera S the most enjoyable for me.
The thing with the base is how the Carrera S is the same car but better. Porsche didn't really need to sell the base and, in some markets, they don't.
Should do top spec Cayman GTS VS Basic 911, in a full comparison test, with like the twisty road driving too.

I’d go the base model. I know the GT3 is amazing, but the base is closer to the GT3 than I thought it would be.

@@DuckHunterGaming the new supra costs half as much and does it in 12.2-12.3 seconds with only 340hp. Y'all are overhyping porsche at this point. For that entry level 911 price I can get a fully loaded Cayman S or even a GT4 with some specs - both cars are outperforming the base 911 heavily

I own a 997.1 base carrera. I dont regret a second for not having a S, 4S etc. Its a perfect daily car with human maintaince prices and its still a 911 with all the joy and smiles per gallon. It shares the same cylinder volume as the 997 turbo, and the weight is almost the same as the 997 GT3. I will keep this car forever. :)
So dear future 911 buyers, try out the base model - it will not dissappoint you.

I remember years ago doing a track day in Mission, BC. My first time seeing a GT3 RS (997) on track, vs a couple of Nissan GTR's and some E92 BMW M3's. The Nissans have more hp, but nothing gets power down more effectively than those rear-engine 911 GT cars. In the rain, they're astoundingly good.
Later on I owned a 991 GT3 and if you haven't driven one, you can't appreciate how powerful and fast they are - the 992 GT3 is truly a new Holy Grail contender.
The base Carrera is the perfect car for every day for those who love gt cars, the perfect balance between performance and comfort. I absolutely love it.

The base is a great car. I remember a time when 14 seconds through 1/4 mile, was quick. And 13 seconds was pretty insane for a road car. The fact that the base 911 does 12.1 is mind blowing. Only wished Porsche offered a Manual in the base car. Because of that I would try to get an allocation for a cayman gts 4.0 manual. Then again my dealer is marking up cayman 4.0’s up to $125k. Pretty crazy if you ask me but people are paying it, I guess. It’s one thing if dealers add a crazy high markup on new cars, it’s another thing when the manufacturer (Porsche) forces customers to get the higher model car just because they want a manual transmission. Porsche knows that those people who want a manual transmission (the true car enthusiast) won’t hesitate to upgrade to the S in order to get their desired transmission choice, even if the upgraded car is out of their price range, they will find a way. It’s basically a cheap and sleazy way of forcing customers to buy up and pay more. If the damn manual can work in the S and GTS, it sure as hell can work in the base car, so it’s not a technical reason.
Sorry to tell you this, but manual transmissions are obsolete.
@@petermartin9494 coming from someone who can't drive a manual transmission. So many people can't drive stick these days, that doesn't mean it's obsolete. Actually it makes the skill of being able to drive manual, that much more impressive.
@@gobinduppal4429 It is fairly impressive but not long ago any fool could do it. The point is that automatic transmissions have come very far and currently they are simply superior in pretty much every way. The Porsche GT3 can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds with a manual transmission and an expert driver. It takes 3.4 seconds with the automatic and anyone can achieve it, you just floor it.
@@petermartin9494 that is the entire point! You answered the dilemma, yourself. A manual transmission is both, much much more engaging to drive, as well as, way more rewarding. When you execute that perfect heel and toe, or pull off that sensationally good launch , as you row up the gears,without making a single mistake, you develop a strong sense of euphoria. Driving that manual transmission becomes one of the highlights to an engaging drive.

I'd love to the GT3 race against an M3 competition. By factory claims they both have 510 hp but which is faster really?
I think GT3 would take it because of the transmission. The ZF on the M3 is amazing, but it’s still torque converter vs (the best) dual-clutch.
The AWD version of the M3/M4 could probably take the GT3 on the drag race, but not in rolling.
Really comes down to weight and transmission vs. awd

With sport chrono (must have extra) the entry carrera gives 400hp due to a 20 sec boost mode. It probably gives more….. I rented one last summer and it blew me away. It did 0-100 in 3,7 sec!

Very impressive that entry level Carrera with no options! Once enough people wake up to the reality that the base model is the best deal, Porsche may have to rethink their option strategy.

I agree with Sam (sorry, Mat). Carbon Ceramics on a cold morning (not summer cold, like Autumn cold) are nearly dangerous. You almost have to either pre-warm them by dragging them a bit or you have to anticipate and give extra distance. You still stop, you just don't stop as quickly as you would have considered you should have and you certainly have a better initial stop on steelies.
I think I'd rather have the Turbo S for on the road, 4wd and one of the fastest launching cars you've tested>
In the real world, it's all about getting off the line 1st that puts you in the lead, we don't really race at 3 figure speeds.
But, then again, I own a Hayabusa, so I usually win there too lol

The 911 GT3 is a lot like the Rolex GMT II Master S/S with Pepsi bezel...effectively impossible to buy at retail...oh yeah, and both are absolute mechanical masterpieces that show the perfect blend of art and science.
That’s why I’ve got a Pagani Batman homage and an AMG - both mean I don’t need to queue…….
Now I HAVE to edit… my AMG is £50k less (it was 18 months old) and FOUR horsepower less than the base 911. Understandably I’m not a fan boy, but wow do you have to pay through the nose for both of the items you mentioned. Each to his (or her) own as they say…

@@dietznutz1 it is the AMG GLA 45 - small but perfectly formed and far less nickable than the slower Golf R. Still has a hand built engine so certainly counts as an AMG.
As for the watch about £85 on Aliexpress and remarked on by my NHS Consultant during lockdown 2020. I didn’t have the heart to tell him he was wrong.

In the past the gts was more like a gt3, this gen 992 the gts is more like the turbo s

@@jkemmie i said that because it shares alot of parts with the turbo s but mainly because the actual engine of the gts is turbocharged unlike the 991.1 that had a N/A same engine as the gt3(991)
it only has less power and lower RPM otherwise it is the same engine.

In this rolling races gearbox is not the issue. Natural aspirated engine simply dont have to spool up turbo’s = no turbo lag = instant gas response.
Both of these cars are just awesome. If you're looking for a daily driver I would go with the Carrera maybe the turbo. The GT3 is just awesome, but for daily driving it would be miserable. I'd rather get are used Carrera do a mild tune and put exhaust on it to give it a little bit of a audiobyte.

In Skoda's and VW's you can momentarily rev the engine fully if you put the car in D roll forward and put it in N. It will let you rev it all out a couple of times before it starts limiting again. Wonder if the same applies to Porsche's? 🤔
