I have debated this with myself (and others) for years now. I genuinely believe that the best looking Carrera is the simplest base model. No wings, slots, scoops, splitters, nothing.........just let the design speak for itself. Having said that, I think the best looking Carrera of recent years is the 911R from a few years ago - but that was the simplest of 911 design shapes too.
True..The scoops, vents, splitters etc just look daft. I don't think Porsche have made a truly beautiful car since the 993...maybe the 997 4S. This thing to me is another pig of a thing, I cannot stand that rear light.

I have not tried a GTS 4.0 or a 992 but I always have preferred driving a 911 over a boxster purely due to the drivetrain layout. In my opinion the rear engined 911 experience is just more fun and engaging than mid engined cars.
Also this applies only taller people but if you plan to go on track make sure you can fit inside a Cayman with a helmet on. A helmet adds many inches to your torso height. Great video, Mate! I have to agree, the road noise in most newer 911s is just too much. I own a 991.2 GTS, 7 speed manual. The car is amazing however, my only complaint is tire noise. I replaced the original spec Pirellis with Michelin PS4s shortly after taking delivery, hoping to reduce tire noise but the improvement was barely noticeable. In their long list of options, Porsche should offer the choice to add additional sound insulation to reduce the annoying tire noise. I would have ticked that box for sure! Regarding the 911’s performance focused engine mounts and suspension joints; I don't believe they contribute to road noise, or if they do, it’s insignificant. Those components would lead to firmer road manners and/or ride quality though Porsche now offers dynamic engine mounts to partially address that. I’m pretty sure most of the noise comes from a combination of wide tires and lack of sound deadening. Cheers from Oregon, USA!
I really appreciate the down to earth and practical nature of Harry's reviews. As a long time 911 owner and daily driver with ear problems, the noise level would really give me pause on this model. On a GT3, I could understand those levels, but for an ordinary 911 the usability should be higher.
Harry, Porsche has an option for 911, it's called Lightweight and Noise Insulated Glass. I suspect they introduced this option for a reason. I would get it in a base 911. Nice review as always.
I want one. I think there is something very cool about having the base/standard '911' of our times without all the various spec options and machinations that pollute the rest of the range.
Could it be reduced sound deadening at the rear? Unlocks some engine noise at cost of cabin refinement. I vaguely recall a story many years ago of engineers desperately chasing noise out of a car, then realised that carpeting the boot made a huge difference. Anyway, great point about the mounts/bushes too, that'll also do it. Interesting video content as usual, cheers.
Love that you bring up sound deadening at the rear. Very likely culprit. I’d also be curious to see, like Harry mentioned, different tires on the car. I’m assuming that Porsche offers these test cars with winter tires at this time of year. That could be part of the issue as well.

The reason there is so much road noise as there is in the 718 also, is because the inner wheel arches are plastic where as those in the Macan etc are felt. This makes a huge difference

I love that Harry is hammering home about the road noise. I bought a 981 Cayman S 7 years ago, still have it today and love it. However, on poor UK road surfaces it's so obnoxiously loud that it almost spoils everything. I would happily sacrifice some performance for a reduction in the cabin noise. I was actually considering a 992 Carrera as my next car but most certainly won't be buying one if the noise is the same. I know people say that it's a sports car, it shouldn't be quiet. However engine noise is one thing, 80-90db tyre roar on a motorway is just obnoxious and makes it so unpleasant, I'm a one car kind of guy too.
My (limited) experience with Japanese sports cars (1991 Supra twin turbo) is that they're simply not up to European standards, particularly in terms of ride and 'feel' on the road. I just felt isolated from the action and despite the ability to travel quickly, was left feeling that it was just a machine to get from A to B rather than an organic experience enabling me to feel at one with machine and road. Clearly built with the American market in mind since manufacturing began.
Looks like they’re reserving the manual in the base model for the future Carrera T. If you’re tracking it then you’re better off with the Carrera S, which has the larger brakes and Porsche Torque Vectoring (not available on the Carrera) which makes a difference.
Great video thanks for posting. A while back I test drove a 997 turbo and loved it. It had the wider tires but didn't notice excessive loud tire roar/road noise. Since I liked the wide body but not the price I went with the 997 4s. Great car and really enjoyed it except for one thing: it was very loud in the cabin :) The tire roar was the problem with apparently less sound deadening inside (vs the turbo model).Years later I am now thinking about getting a 997 (my favorite series 911) in the turbo spec...
Another great video Harry - thank-you. I do like this base vehicle - however I would never buy one in Australia. This base Porsche 911 is insultingly over-priced for antipadeans. I just can't see the value at AUD$280,377 drive-away. This is equivalent to a UK purchase price of £157,450. (Conversion rate as at Nov 2022)
Hi Harry, about the cabin noise in both of the 992's you tried, I noticed that they have an option on their configurator called "Lightweight Noise Insulated Glass". You should see if Porsche can give you a car with this option installed, to see if it makes a difference.
Something about "standard" and "base" trim level cars has always appealed to me more. This is the 911 992 I would buy, I especially love those seats with that fabric inlay. Very nice.
Nice to see Harry review the standard Carrera. Just like with most sports or super cars, the base is more than enough. Marketing and some people need their pride matched with an S. Just like the C63 and the S , the M3 and the comp etc.
Hi Harry, hope you are keeping well. For me the 911 has always been the most beautiful car. And i can't see past the base model every time. In white it's a real work of art. Cabin noise? More sound insulation. As you've tested it here, this is my perfect car. Unfortunately me and my friend Arthritis probably couldn't get in or out of this beauty these days, so thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work. 👍🖖😎🦼
I had the pleasure of driving a 2020 911 C4S over a weekend a few weeks back. I was hoping it would replace my 2012 911 C2. On the highway my wife and I struggled to have a conversation over the overbearing sound inside the cabin. It got to the point it was giving me a headache. I think I’ll stick to my 8 year old base 911. It’s still a lot of fun to drive and while it doesn’t have some of the modern amenities (like Apple CarPlay) at least I don’t need to wear earplugs. Thanks for another informative video Harry.
Thanks, Harry. Nice to see a review of the base Carrera. I have the twin of this car in a 991. Agree about the quality and will never need the power of the higher variants. One thing is a must is the sports exhaust. I swapped mine for a Fabspeed which is off the charts.
Thank you for all of the great videos throughout the year. I think you've kept some of us sane with your amazing content. Best wishes of the season to you and yours, see you next year.
I'd only go for the gt3. If I were to spend 6 figures on a car, it needs to be special. the entry level trim of a car that's sold literally a million examples is not going to be special.
@@DonLee1980 Trouble is unless you are a very "favoured customer" there is no way you will get an allocation for a new GT3 since the speculators moved in.
I think the fact that the base Carrera isn't available with a manual transmission is down to emission regulations. Car manufactures have to pay more money to the EU if their fleet is above a specific CO2 limit. A manual car is less fuel efficient than a PDK car and thus they would have to pay more money to the EU. A base Carrera would probably be quite popular as a manual and therefore this would significantly impact their fleet CO2 emissions.
The absolute BEST thing to do, would be to GET RID of these filthy, lying TYRANTS you’ve voted in over there! This whole “Global Warming” alarmism is a complete and total LIE!!! Man is not responsible for ANY global warming. ZERO. REAL scientists (not the paid, activists employed by the grifters who love to raise your taxes), ALL state MAN, has nothing to do with (they call it ‘Climate Change’ now, to better fit the narrative…Remember when they told us an ICE AGE was coming??) this Climate Change narrative. The SUN, is mostly responsible. And Earth is CYCLICAL. It’s called WEATHER. The only difference nowadays, is today we have GRIFTERS called MARXISTS, SOCIALISTS, COMMUNISTS, FASCISTS, all vying for higher taxes to line their pockets with. It’s all about CONTROL, and control is POWER. It’s sad that I have to tell this to ADULTS. You all should have the wisdom to know all this, but you people question NOTHING!!!! You hear it from your MASTERS, the liars on the evening news, or the papers, or movies, or WHATEVER…And you question NOTHING. Look at you! Did it??? NO!!! How many did you take???? SEVERAL!! COME ON!!! WAKE UP!!!!! It’s ALL BS, and you are dangerous as THEY are for not QUESTIONING OBVIOUS LIES!!!! Jeez! There’s no “climate change”, outside of normal weather patterns… But THEY are spraying chemicals from jets, so if there is anything happening to our climate, it’s being done DELIBERATELY by those who are whining incessantly about it for the last 50 years…So, maybe LOOK UP, and notice what was a bright and clear blue sky in the early morning, then the jets fly high and mark up your sky, those trails EXPAND 50x, and before you know it, the sky is filled with that UGLY, grayish-yellow haze…. But NO!!!! The GRIFTERS would NEVER do THAAA-AAAAT!!!! Hahaha!!!!
Good video thanks Harry. I presume the ride is still firm? I recently changed from an F Type S to a new 992 Carrera S having driven a C2S at Porsche Silverstone track then test drove one on the road but in the rain. Having owned it for a couple of months, two things that stand out (as you mentioned) are the poor ride over even slightly bad surfaces and loud road noise - more than my F Type which I didn't expect. The soundtrack is pretty dull too and not particularly nice when revved hard - again I'm comparing this to an F Type which wasn't loud unless you gunned it. I guess it's the 'Porsche' sound which I wasn't used to and, surprisingly, as you point out the car doesn't feel every day usable. Other than that it's good car and seriously quick, somewhat better built than the F Type which turned out to be one of the worst cars I've ever owned from a build quality and reliability point of view (without exaggeration it had more than 15 different problems in the 4 years I owned it).
I came here wondering which 911 model is the one to go for and I'm leaving still confused. I've always thought of the 911 as an everyday useable car and a GT tourer, but the cabin noise highlighted etc. has me rethinking a 911 at all. As many things are subjective I'd try driving one, however Harry's opinions and observations usually are pretty much spot on.
Great honest review Harry. You’re right the base 911 (992) is a great drivers car. If you wanted luxury & power I would go for a Cayenne or Macan Turbo 👌
I agree! We had big plans in 2020 but CV restrictions meant it couldn't happen, here's hoping 2021 might be kinder to the idea of EU travel but hard to plan anything right now..
@edwowen. .. +1. I'll second the optional "Lightweight & Noise Insulated Glass" .. Our new Kombi has this "Double Insulated Glass" option. .. Its library quiet.
If you needed some extra power tuning is always a option.... The turbos are probably the same so there is a lot of performance on tap for this car. Great video as always
Thanks for the review Harry. I’m pretty certain though that you don’t get Launch Control without Sports Chrono Pack. Because Sports Chrono gives you ‘Sport Plus’ mode where you can engage Launch Control. In this Carrera you were testing you only have Wet, Normal and Sport Mode. When you tried it that just seemed like a foot on the brake with acceleration when lifting off. Not quite Launch Control where it holds the revs until you disengage the brake pedal. 👍🏼
Press cars are so often the loaded versions. Fascinating to see a "base" model on test. I look at the Porsche options list and wonder "Do I need PASM? Sports Chrono? Am I missing out? Is the base model a huge loss experience-wise?" Loading on the options worsens depreciation. I feel like I could live with "A 911".

Funny thing, I was hoping a 991/992 was going to be a lot quieter than my base 997.1 - perhaps they aren’t 😢
Harry,
Please review a Lexus LC500. Love to know what you think of the Japanese take on fast GT cars.
Thank you.
I love the idea of a base model sports car! Getting back to basics.
Looks like they’re reserving the manual in the base model for the future Carrera T. If you’re tracking it then you’re better off with the Carrera S, which has the larger brakes and Porsche Torque Vectoring (not available on the Carrera) which makes a difference.
I have tested the base carrera and as I’m no racer it’s definitely on my bucket list. 370 odd horses should be more than enough. Great review Harry!
Harry you are really an excellent, very good car reviewer, you explain things so well and the things that matter. Very much appreciated thank you. 👍
Fabulous it's all I'd ever need! Thanks Harry & Merry Christmas
Five you tube notifications...always watch Harry's last because it's like a good red, it should be savoured. Thanks Harry.
Amazing video. I am getting much more into the "base" spec models than these silly specials and nonsense price options. Great Video Harry. As always 😍
Very nice.
Reminds me of how many people could only afford the base MG Midget or Lotus for instance, but all the fun was still there!
I like this guy. He’s like a nice version of my dad.
Tell us about your dad.
@@blondiebxl He's old, bald and has a beard. Knows a lot about cars (was a mechanic before becoming an engineer) but we don't really get along. wbu?
It’s one of those rare occasions when the base model looks amazing!😍
Personally, if I could afford a 911 of any variant I'd choose the base model for everyday driving. You get more chances to floor it more of the time.
Agree 100%!
I’d be tempted by the S, just to get the manual gearbox. The Carrera T could be worth waiting for.
Yes its more fun to drive a slow(er) car fast than a faster car slow. Not that the Carrera HP numbers are anything to grouse about.
I got the base 992 and put more into interior options. Just an amazing car!!!!
Harry is the classiest car guy out there! Just love his reviews.
I always make a brew before watching a Harry's Garage video, very therapeutic
Get the sound insulation glass( plus its lighter) improves the road noise.
That is my guess too. 👍
They just wanna sell the T when it comes out…
The absolute BEST thing to do, would be to GET RID of these filthy, lying TYRANTS you’ve voted in over there!
You took an EXPERIMENTAL injection SEVERAL TIMES, to rid yourselves of the IMAGINARY “C19”…Which turned out to be THE FLU!!!!! Haha! What about your “vaccine”??? Aren’t THOSE supposed to prevent??? Did it???
It’s nice to see white Porsche 911 for great review. Beauty
I’d take a base 911 any day..
With all of these cars if just get the base version. It's the best bang for buck.
Not without a manual unfortunately
Id take a carrera s any day
@@xj_220 it's too expensive, you can easily get the same horsepower out of this one if you really wanted to.
@@dragospahontu nah modified fars dont last anything
Excellent video. No hyperbole, just cuts to the important information. Quality.
"There's normally a cup holder here, I've thrown it in the back somewhere" LOL classic Harry! :)
I had to relive the launch control moment a few times! Fantastic review as honest as it can be 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Great video Harry. I like your thinking with the base 911, seems more pure. PS I have the registration 911 YUM..
PS who cares?
I think you might ?
I came here wondering which 911 model is the one to go for and I'm leaving still confused. I've always thought of the 911 as an everyday useable car and a GT tourer, but the cabin noise highlighted etc. has me rethinking a 911 at all. As many things are subjective I'd try driving one, however Harry's opinions and observations usually are pretty much spot on.
Cars are so good these days, base models are therefore nearly always the pick of the bunch. Love the Carrera.
Great honest review Harry. You’re right the base 911 (992) is a great drivers car. If you wanted luxury & power I would go for a Cayenne or Macan Turbo 👌
We need more project 7 content !!!
I agree! We had big plans in 2020 but CV restrictions meant it couldn't happen, here's hoping 2021 might be kinder to the idea of EU travel but hard to plan anything right now..
Really enjoy your reviews Harry
It's 900 quid and you shouldn't need to spend it but I wonder if "Lightweight and noise insulated glass" would help?
@edwowen. .. +1. I'll second the optional "Lightweight & Noise Insulated Glass" .. Our new Kombi has this "Double Insulated Glass" option. .. Its library quiet.
Thanks Harry for your videos on this and the Farm channel. Happy Christmas to you all.
Harry is the standard now. He is good at this )
Love it when you upload a video!!
Imagine a ClubSport version of this, with a manual gearbox and 100kg less weight!!
hope will be the 992 carrera T. Would like to know how they'll manage the Radio Delete option!
Sadly they won't make that mistake again :(
Harry, nice to see a base model car being tested, rather than the range topping , keep the videos coming as there’s nobody who does it better Have a safe Christmas , David from Highland Scotland 🏴.
Very interesting about the noise levels in the 992. This is the reason I have never considered a 911 for a daily driver...
That's a beautiful car ! But bit expensive maybe although perfectly balanced . Astonishing the evolution of the 911 series throughout the years . Keep doing videos Harry! Thanks
There is a new noise insulated glass option for 2021 models. Could you please do a test? Thanks.
I have the light, noise reducing glass.
You’d never know it !!
I’m amazed at that noise level. My Army-surplus HumVee is at 82db inside the cabin at speed! And I thought that was loud!
I’d be interested to see how the noise insulating glass might impact the noise.
good point, however based on my experience driving one its coming from the rear wheels. people used to dynamat that area in the previous models
Great channel. And review
The best comment was when Harry asked "Why no manual on the base car", a logical thinking person will always do THEE best reviews and it's why Harry is in my top 3 reviewers on You Tube👍🏁🇺🇸
What a fantastic way to end a brilliant day a glass of wine and Harry‘s garage
Harry, you are so enthusiastic. "A kid in a candy shop". Merry Christmas and a safe New Year. Please keep the content coming for 2021!
Paul
Thank you, Harry! Was always wondering about the base. You hit it on the head. It's a very capable *GT*, these days, but the interior noise problem plus the mandatory autobox makes it an unresolved product. And, happy new year!
Great vid, as ever.
The size of GT with the cabin noise of a trackday-focused sports car - does not compute.
Harry can you get one in with the insulated glass for a quick DB comparison?
Wow that car looks so beautiful in that basic spec. Much more appealing to me than the red S variant you previously recorded.
