You should see her live performances. She is an absolute top tier stage presence goddess. I recommend watching "Perennial" live at Wacken in 2019. Also check out the official video of "Teacher Teacher", though it's a studio produced version of the song, the video is cuts from live performances. She OWNS the crowd and the stage. Also, from a vocal coach's perspective, You should really check out the one take performance of "Judgement & Punishment". You can really see what she is doing anatomically. Also, Jinjer is just an awesome band all in all. They are phenomenally tight, and though there are plenty of groups in their genre, there is no one that sounds like they do. You make Jinjer videos...the Jinjer army will watch them

Yes, Ukraine. Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, where the fighting started in 2014.
Some post production with the layers and harmonies, but YES, that is all her. The harsh don't come from the vocal chords , but from the false vocal folds. Tatiana is mostly self taught, with her bigger influences being Gwen Stefani and , for the harsh, Otep and Randy Blythe(Lamb of God).
This live session was done to showcase Vlad on drums, he had joined not long before this. He is classically trained on piano, and self taught on drums. He ,Roman on guitar, and Eugene on bass are all great musicians. The guys were stuck in Kiev when the current fighting started, but were allowed to leave last year to tour and be ambassadors for Ukraine.
The usual next step, if you choose to do more from them, is to see her live. Perennial at Wacken 2019 or Pit of Consciousness in Kiev.

On The Top live in Kiev (now Kyiv) has some great belting too, though maybe not on the level of epicness of I Speak Astronomy. I Speak Astronomy is one where there isn't a concert video that definitively overshadows the omv - though either Resurrection Fest or Summer Breeze are good their recording quality isn't perfect. Captain Clock from Resurrection fest has some beautiful belting too.

    Perennial live is amazing!
There are a few women in metal who growl, and a few who can switch it on and off on a phrase or even on a word. It is an acquired taste for sure, but it does add texture and narrative detail when used as Tatiana does here - from the lyrics we understand she is talking about duality and that is overtly expressed by how each aspect of "Pisces" has a voice of its own.

The fondation of many of Jinjer's songs is Jazz. In the first part of Pisces Tatiana sounds like a jazz singer. Tatiana is a world class growler with the voice of an angel. The song Jinger Bad Water is good example of a song where sings in only cleans.

little bit jazz (no improvisation), but moreso composers like Carl Orff, Stravinsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Grieg, other romantic to modern classical composers.

  • @coder4liberty
    @coder4liberty 11 месяцев назад +16

Yup that's all her. She is quite good at the false chord screaming/growling. The number of good live on stage videos of her doing this is a really long list but you would probably enjoy the Perennial Live at Wacken Open Air and Judgement and Punishment One Take, Outlander Live at Loudfest, Pit of Consciousness Live in Kyiv, On the Top Live in Kyiv and I Speak Astronomy Videos.

  • @j.f.fisher5318
    @j.f.fisher5318 11 месяцев назад +10

Ironically, Tatiana got started growling from a similar experience to what she's giving so many others today. She heard Otep in 2002 or so and was shocked to learn that Otep Shamaya is a woman. She was inspired to get serious about singing (she'd had a few months of vocal lessons in school) and to learn growling. She started singing with every band that would let her join to build her base while practicing growls on the side for about 5 years until she started growliin performances in 2008 with a band called Prophecy that was more Otep influenced. Interesting because in Jinjer her growls are more Randy Blythe influenced - but I think that fits Jinjer's music better while Prophecy was more punky. She says Jinjer is her 8th band and at one time she was singing with 4 bands in the town where she grew up.
Covers: doing featured vocals with Suicide Silence (husband Alex Lopez's former band) on Alice In Chains' "Man In The Box."
Next one isn't Jinjer but a side project Tati did in Jinjer's early years before the 2014 war in eastern Ukraine forced them to leave their homes behind to continue their careers. If you search "vidcerts tatiana jinjer nirvana" you'll find 22 minutes of Tati doing latin-infused Nirvana covers. To hear her cover Nirvana growling there's Territorial Pissings with Eugene the bassist of Jinjer and hubby Alex doing guitar and drums from the early days of the covid lockdowns, and a couple of weeks after Puddle of Mudd's infamous cover though nobody is saying if it was a response or a coincidence.
Some other women growlers to check out: 9 year old Harper doing Spiritbox's "Holy Roller" on AGT - though I think they tuned that a bit lower than Harper naturally growls comparing to other stuff from her, still she's really good.
Courney LaPlante of Spiritbox "Rule of Nines" one take. (I like the omv of Holy Roller better than the one take myself).
Melissa Bonny is a relative newcommer but has a lovely voice and very smooth growls - Marching On Versailles or I Am The Storm are a couple of smples of her work or covering Jenny Oldstones from GOT with a project called Dark Side Of The Moon.
Otep's Ghostflowers from the Confrontation live DVD is a good example of her vocal skills.
Arch Enemy's new singer Alyssa White-Gluz is hard to suggest for because she started as a fry screamer with good clean skills in The Agonist then joined AE and got mentored by their former singer and sounds like she added false cord growls in 2017. But it's hard to find top quality recordings of recent performances so the most common live for reactions is Nemesisat Wacken from 2016 beforeshe added false cords. My best suggestion is Arch Enemy Sunset Over The Empire at Graspop 2023.
And last but certainly not least is Angela Gossow the former singer of Arch Enemy in Nemesis live in Tokyo 2008.
There's lots more than I could possibly list. ;)

The song title is perfect. Pisces, the two fish. The duality of life , ying and yang. Half the time she sings like god damn Brittany Spears, the other parts she sounds like the devil.
edit : This song deserves to be listened to many times, because Tatiana will steal the show on your first listen....but the band is incredibly clean and precise.

    • @jonathanwobesky9507

the song's theme is Pisces, everything is about Pisces, particularly surrender and myrterdom. Duality isn't unique to Pisces, other duality signs are Gemini, Cancer, Libra, Aquarius. Cancer symbol is actually 2 fishes too!

Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy - Handshake with Hell. Vicky Psarakis from The Agonist - Remnants in Time. Melissa Bonny from Rage of Light / Ad Infinitum / Darkside of the Moon - Twilight of the Thundergod (Amon Amarth Cover). Welcome to the wonderful world of Jinjer! 😆 The scream/growl harsh vocals are definitely all Tatiana, it’s use of her false vocal folds (it does sound like she probably doubled some of the harsh vocals in post-production, but the base sound is all her). I would definitely recommend checking out the “live from Wacken 2019” video of their song Perennial because it really shows off her amazing ability to instantly transition back and forth between clean and harsh vocals in a big concert setting. I think you would also enjoy the official video for their song Wallflower. The song has a very cool jazz-like groove in the first half which gradually builds up to a big finish and Tatiana’s vocals are about 80% clean singing.

Great reaction! Glad you enjoyed your first listen to women doing harsh vocals. Other bands with female singers doing harsh vocals include Spiritbox (Courtney LaPlante), Arch Enemy (Angela Gossow and Alissa White Gluz), Ad Infinitum (Melissa Bonny), Dark Side of the Moon (also Melissa) and Seven Spires (Adrienne Cowan). Oh by the way, Floor Jansen can do death metal growls as well. Only used in one Nightwish song but she used to growl a lot in her previous band Revamp. The Nightwish song is Yours is an Empty Hope. The Wembley version is the best to hear her growls since they are layered under Marko's cleans in the chorus. For her Revamp stuff checkout Misery's No Crime, Disdain, and Wild Card. One of the best examples of her growl is from her solo concert in Amsterdam in 2021. Song is from her first band, After Forever. It is called Face Your Demons and she only growls on two words but perfectly placed and in context for the lyrics. ruclips.net/video/4sg1SVQ_QvQ/видео.html. One of my favorite songs with female harsh vocals is By Alissa White Gluz but not with her band Arch Enemy but with Powerwolf, Demons are a Girls Best Friend. Great song with all harsh vocals and the video is outstanding with great costumes. ruclips.net/video/lDZ7p7WAG2o/видео.html.

To repeat what others have said - Perennial Live @Wacken Open Air is great “evidence”, Teacher, Teacher music video is just beautiful, slick, groovy and heavy. Jinjer is best consumed "live," so I'd suggest Perennial (Live at Wacken 2019), Pit of Consciousness (Live in Kiev), On The Top (Live in Kiev), Vortex (Live at Hellfest 2021). Great reaction! So glad you found things you liked even if metalcore is not your style. Tatiana is one of the best growlers in the business and is better than most men. While most Jinjer songs feature more harsh vocals, they almost always have lots of contrast in their music, even if it is less extreme than in Pisces. I would check out "Perennial" live at Wacken, "Judgement and Punishment" one take, and "Vortex". Can't wait to see more

Courtney LaPlante's (Spiritbox) live one-take of Circle With Me is another amazing example of a female metal vocalist that can switch between beautiful singing and brutal screaming.

There is a whole new generation of women who are doing this now. There is even a 10 year old girl who does it! Her name is Harper. She has her own RUclips channel and her dad helped her record an album.
There is also a Barbie-doll like pop star turned metalcore shock rock vocalist named Poppy who does it. You really have to watch her sometime. It's like watching a tender sweet Lady Gaga go absolutely bat---- nutz. She recently released a video of her cover of Kittie's song "Spit".
    Other female growlers:
    Jinjer
    Arch Enemy
    Spiritbox
    Infected Rain
    Butcher Babies
    Straight Line Stitch
    Otep
    Kittie
    Nightwish
If you ever want to witness how much energy one of these front women can muster from a crowd, then check out Angela Gossow Live from Japan. Holy crap is she awesome.

I’m sure others have already said this, but that is 100% Tatiana’s voice. She is using her false vocal chords. They have said they occasionally use a slight delay, but otherwise no effects are used live.

Didn't see it on your playlist, so if you haven't checked out Disturbed's cover of "Sound of Silence" you Really REALLY should. They've done multiple covers ("Land of Confusion," "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You," and "ISHFWILF" are just a few) but i believe "Sound of Silence" is on a whole different level. Saw Jinjer open for Disturbed last Saturday and they both were AMAZING!

Thank you for commenting on the stage presence emitting command and confidence. Rarely do coaches analyze this about her and other singers. I too am not a big fan of screams but only when done in a limited manner placed strategically for attention and interest. Another singer to dive in is Dan Vasc who does tons of covers that you can pick.

Jinjer are immaculate live. Instrumentally, they are complex, but allow for space. Fantastic writers. As for Tati, I can't stress enough how magnetic she is as a front woman. She owns the stage, and one can tell she's singing from her soul.

In the original recording, the belt would have confused you.
Context: the recording (and this MV also) double layers Tatiana's voice. For most of it, it just adds impact, but during the belt, one part belts while the other growls.
Several people thought there are "two singers" in the song because of that part.
Also, the band never expected this MV to blow up - they made it to introduce their new drummer. The way he adds ghost notes to this song is great.

Tatiana has essentially created an entire industry - I don't know if there is a count kept of how many reaction videos have been made just from this recording of the song "Pisces" - but it has to be in the 6 digits!
I'm not much of a metalcore fan, but Jinjer instrumentally border on progressive rock, and the technical excellence of both the instrumentalists and Tatiana is undeniable!

A great reaction. You really should check out at least these three performances by, Jinjer; 'Perennial' live at Wacken Open Air Festival from 2019, this shows just how good Tatiana and the band are in a live setting; 'Judgement (and Punishment)' Tatiana's One-Take Vocal version, this gives you a good view of her up close whilst singing; and 'Home Back' the official music video, this shows how well her and the band can incorporate different musical styles in one song. There are many other great songs and videos of theirs to recommend but the ones that I suggest here give you a good overview of her and the bands talents.

Tatiana uses her low with a purpose.
Sometimes to express anger, sometimes to portray a sadness that only "this" can express.
That being said, with Jinger, it would be a good idea to read the lyrics to better understand the emotions when she's going back and forth.
It really does make a lot of sense once you know what the song is about.
So whether it's about a fish or whether it's about her emotions from past experiences, she hit this one out of the park.
    😊❤️🤘🤘

She also alters the way she sings the clean lines to fit the mood of the songs. She has a tone all of her own but uses many styles to express.

Although there are definitely some post-production effects going on (the swelling reverb on the the line "cherish his life to the underworld," and the vocal doubling in the last section), those are just to add some fullness to the sound, but the actual vocal growl is all Tatiana! Aside from Tatiana, some others you should check out that do similar effects are Angela Gossow and Alyssa White-Gluz (former and current singers for Arch Enemy, respectively), Maria Brink (In This Moment), and more recent stars in the making Yukina (of the Japanese band Hanabie) and Mayu (of the Japanese band Nemophila). Yukina is probably the most interesting of them all, in my opinion, with her ability to switch between normal cleans, high-pitched anime-like cleans, and mid-range and deep growls (ala Jinjer). Mayu tends toward higher screams, more of a black-metal banshee wail, but also with gorgeous cleans.
