- I watch episode 1 of Lovely Complex with the subtitles I translated back in 2012 and react accordingly. Quality cringe content!
Also, I go over a lot of common things in Kansai-ben like akan, chau, meccha, omoroi, the -hen ending of verbs, etc.
Obviously, I've gotten better at translating over the past 8 years, but it's comforting to see that aside from a few little things here and there, those translations were still pretty good.

Have you seen Lovely Complex? It's one of the only anime I translated that I'm allowed to say I translated that is also widely available to watch for free, so if you want an idea of how I translate(d like, 8 years ago when I wasn't as good), check it out!

Its so cool that you did the translations, I actually thought about the subs alot watching it and wondered how it translated so naturally from japanese, your subs really fit into the whole mood of the series and kept the humor that I worried could have been lost in translation, great job, you really did this amazing anime justice!!!
This is a really interesting insight. I never knew there were different dialects in Japanese.

I was in my 20s, so not the target demographic at all, but i really enjoyed Lovely Complex back in the day, and it would have been your translations that I watched it with! What a treat to see you revisit this and provide commentary on the translation process. I've been casually learning Japanese since the 2000s and still have a deep love and appreciation for the language. So hearing your insights is really fascinating for me. You have a new subscriber!

About KOizumi and OOtani, what about translating those instances where they change the first kanji as Tallzumi and Shortani, or something like that? It feels tacked on, yeah, but it might be easier for the audience than remembering the meaning of Ko and Oo.

I watched Lovely Complex after you said you translated it. It’s a very good anime and surprisingly progressive for the time with not only the tall girl and short guy main couple but the (spoiler alert) transgender girl who they are supportive of and become friends with. Do you ever get worried when you translate characters that belong to a real world minority knowing their dialogue and the dialogue surrounding them will be especially scrutinized?
I do worry nowadays, but I didn't used to think about it much since I was very disconnected from the fan community back then and didn't even realize fans pick apart dialogue and hyper-analyze it in search of flaws and politics-pushing 😂 Trans characters are nothing new to shoujo, but they were usually used as jokes pre-2000s, so yeah, LoveCom was pretty refreshing that way.

I wonder what sort of rights situation led to Viz subbing "Moonlight Densetsu" when Usagi sings it and in SuperS: the Movie, but nowhere else.
It's probably because it's part of the movie and maybe not just the opening for the anime.
hi Sarah Moon, i love your videos! i'm a beginner in Japanese (almost done with Genki I) and your videos have opened my mind so much. will you be doing any more videos on words/phrases in anime that are way more nuanced than non-JPN speakers think? i think the stuff about そうか you mentioned is incredibly interesting, and it seems like there are other words/phrases that are a little more complex than The Weeb Community gives them credit for (like your video on まかせて, or what you said on Twitter about はい？). as someone who studies Japanese as a hobby i get pigeonholed into these typical translations so often that it becomes obstructive when trying to understand untranslated JPN. much love!
Hey there! I'm not sure if you answered this question in one of your earlier videos, but what do you do when you come across something that you have no idea how to translate? Like say for instance, complex sentence structures, a particularly rare dialect, series-specific/specialized terminology or obscure references to literature/mythology? Do translators resort to fudging things, especially when they're on a deadline and can't do the requisite research? One of the reasons I'm asking this question is because I'm facing a crisis of confidence/impostor syndrome, especially now that I'm on the cusp of graduating from fan translator to something more professional and would love to hear more about how professionals deal with these issues. (^.^')
Japanese google saves me anytime that happens. On the rare occasion that I'm just completely lost, I can always ask my project manager. I'm also pretty active on Twitter now and the translating community is pretty active there so I can also post a question there.
Translating a show that's entirely in a different Japanese dialect must've been difficult. Kudos!

@せラムーンSarahMoon Could you please do a video about how you translate the different speech quirks of characters. To give a famous example, Naruto's speech patterns and inflections (語尾), and the characters in One Piece etc. As well as how could one translate to show the difference in speech between a lord and his vassals, for eg in anime set in historical Japan?
How do you capture their quirks and individuality (a method that authors use to make their characters memorable) and not make them sound generic? Is it even possible??
It's partly something you have to feel from an overall sense of how they talk - think about, if you were writing the characters originally in your language (not translating it) how would you write them?
Ah that's one way to go about it. I'll try that.
So I have a question for you as a translator: in Ouran High School Host Club, the dynamics between the characters are largely defined by the senpai-kohai system. (That is to say, the fact that the hosts are all in different grades is a Big Deal, plot-wise) Sinve you've said before that you don't like when translators keep the Japanese honorific system, how would you translate shows like Ouran? I'm legit curious about this.
Like there are lines like "While on vacation, don't treat me as your senpai" or the fact that Haruhi doesn't call Tamaki by his name that much, instead opting for "Tamaki-senpai" or just "senpai." The dub said 'screw it' and just kept it in as "senpai," which I don't mind, but I'm wondering how you would do it?
Ouran is a pretty otaku-ish anime, right? (I only saw the first episode, so I'm not really familiar.) Anyway, if it's a big plot point and it's a series that's clearly for otaku, I'm fine with keeping senpai, etc. It just reallllly bothers me when you've got an anime in like, a fantasy setting where the characters aren't even Japanese and senpai is kept as senpai. 😂

Anyways, that's definitely true about Ouran that it's very heavily based on otaku-y tropes and such so that makes sense. It's interesting getting other people's perspectives on this stuff. It's not something I ever thought about until I found your videos

Since I started studying hiragana katakana and kanji basic I'm slowly learning. I find myself trying to avoid reading subtitles period
BTW I watched lovely complex and fell in love with seiko kotobuki. She's seriously pretty. Also studying Japanese language using Duolingo and kawaiinihongo. And others. Seriously jealous that you got the chance to learn as a teenager. How long will it take studying this stuff before I can speak?

It is. Ke is the other OnYomi... I don't know how much you know about Kanji, but "ki" is pretty tame one overall.
