Dub-Dio: I have disowned my weakness in favor of life everlasting.
Sub-Dio: Human schemes have their limits.

Lit: The more you try to scheme, humans have limits.
Dub-Dio: You're behind the curtain, like Polonius.

Dub-Dio: Luring me away from the gutter rat? How very noble of you.
Sub: Is he using himself as bait to protect his friend?

Dub-Speedwagon: He's able to heal faster than the flames can hurt him.
Sub: He's regenerating while he burns!

Dub-SW: If that ain't immortality, then I'm the queen.

Dub-Jojo: I'm waiting for you, Dio.

Lit: Conversely, the one who has been cornered to human height is you (you bastard)!

If you have hbomax their subs leave out letters entirely it would drive you nuts im sure lol. I had to turn it off because of my ocd. I keep subs on for everything mind you.
From what I've been able to watch of the Part 5 dub, it's really good. The additonal use of Italian where it wasn't in the original Japanese is so good.
My first watch through of JoJo was in Japanese out of necessity, but now that the dub exists for the entirety of whats released I'm rewatching in English with my girlfriend. Its definitely more readily parseable
Really fantastic video. The JoJo dub is super underrated. A lot of the memes are based on Engrish and other stuff you only get in the Japanese so people don't even give the dub a chance. I'd say by Part IV the dub was actually just outright better IMO.
Regarding Dio's mudas, he does actually drop a "It's useless, useless, useless, useless, useless!" near the end of the Part 1 dub, and Patrick Seitz did a really great job with it. It worked perfectly. Then in Part 3 when Muda becomes his battle cry that he uses when punching stuff, the dub chose to just leave it untranslated, to mirror the protagonist's "Ora" battle cry.
Finally, someone with a full explanation of how it works. I enjoy dubs and subs and I'm tired of people making the same silly excuses. I hope people come to an understanding about the real effort it takes to dub anime
Exactly and understand how it's important to translate and tweak a few things for foreign audiences to understand better and enjoy to and at the same time atleast keep the spirit of the original in a little bit
You made me interested in watching the dub. Also with the "gutter rat" line I interpreted it as Dio referring to Speedwagons criminal background
Oh man, Netflix using the CC from the English as the English subs can make things a little confusing for me at times xD I'm not that well versed in Japanese, but when differences I notice pop up, my brain gets distracted and I'll often miss the next line or two, haha. Great video though! As always, I appreciate the explanations of these aspects of translation. :)
Sometimes dubs can be just audiobooks of the sub scripts so it's really refreshing that adapters can spice it up like in these scenes.
This is a good reminder that subs are just as a localization as a dub is.

I love the ham in the Jojo dub and completely forgot about that Star Trek episode. That is a great example!
Fascinating! Thank you. In terms of Jojo as a series, I didn't get into the first two seasons (Phantom Blood and Battle Tendencies) much. But Stardust Crusaders, with the introduction of stands, turned things up to 11! I recommend at least watching one or two episodes of Stardust Crusaders to see if the Stand battles change how you enjoy the show, but no shame if you're not. If you look up the clip of Kakyoin licking a cherry, you'll get one of my favourite lines in any anime:
"Lick, lick, lick, lick, lick, lick, lick. Oh hey, Jojo, look. Flamingos in flight!"
It's even funnier in context, once you know what Jojo went through that day. As well as being a brilliant non-sequitur XD. I'd be interested to know how that particular joke was adapted from Japanese, since I think in Japanese they make a distinc onomatope sound.
Also, to go on a translation related tangent in general, have you been watching Odd Taxi? There's one character (I think he's a Porcupine) who speaks entirely in rap, so all of his lines rhyme with each other. From what you've taught me about translation, I am *seriously* impressed by how the Crunchyroll translators managed to keep the rhym schemes going in English. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that in particular, but beware that the story context for his lines do contain major spoilers!

I love your videos. I don't speak fluent Japanese but I'm trilingual/also translate (on the side) and it's satisfying to hear stuff from the perspective of someone who actually understands our frustration
I love how you explained the differences between dubs and subs and the reasons behind them using concrete examples. Reading skillfuly localized translations is always great, but it's also fun to learn about the work that goes into them.

Surprised to see Netflix has the opposite problem of nearly every anime I have a physical copy for.
Usually they have subtitles for the JP dub, which is obviously necessary, but we don't get subs for the English dub. Just an accessibility thing that I've been noticing a lot more recently.
I had the opposite problem watching black butler on Netflix. I watched it dubbed but left subtitles on in case my house was too loud for a moment or my brain just refused to process words like it does sometimes.
But the subtitles (which should in this case be a literal closed caption) differed significantly from what I heard.
Can't guarantee it, but I'm pretty sure it was the same subtitles I would have gotten if I'd watched it in Japanese audio with english subtitles (so perhaps a more direct translation but not at all an accurate caption for the audio I actually used)
Now that you mention it, I noticed that Japanese dubs sounded more like questions rather than statements. Fascinating video!

Hah. I'm doing some translation work of a piece of fiction myself to improve my language skills, and I do often find myself thinking 'yes, I could literally translate this, but I could convey the meaning better in English by adjusting it slightly'. I did feel at first a bit uncomfortable by doing it, but then realized that it sounded less clunky by adapting it instead.
This was so good! I'm a translation student currently writing my thesis on JoJo's adaptation/translation and I loved this! This helps add to me research so thank you. I want to learn Japanese so I can make analysis like this in the future.

In older JoJo anime - "Muda-muda-muda muda da" was translated as "useless, useless, it is all useless". Which sounds much better than "futile, futile, futile", and have same meaning.
I like watching JoJo subbed so I can catch all the music references.
I’m a dub watcher who uses cc (for a variety of reasons) and I’ve also noticed while watching dubs on Netflix is that the cc are for the sub version & don’t match the dub, for example with FMA 03 the captions left in the Japanese honorifics which obviously weren’t in the dub
ahhh another great video!! I remember watching trigun on (portuguese) netflix and the subs were a disaster and no matter how I looked at it it had the feel of a dub - but I couldn't even confirm that because there's no portuguese audio of trigun to begin with! Most likely it came from the pt-brazilian dub or even a translation of another dub entirely! Who's to say, but it was very distracting and makes it difficult for me to watch anime on netflix (always prefer english subs but they're not always available). Oh the woes of being at an intermediate level of japanese and not being confident enough to turn off subs entirely.
side note, as an aspiring translator the way you deconstruct japanese translation problems helps me TONS...there's not a lot of formal education on this and sis!!! Im taking notes!! I feel disgustingly ungrateful to just like your videos, so I really hope I can afford to be a patreon supporter one day ^^

I have a nigh-zero knowledge of Japanese, but, at least for recent media that have Japanese & English voices, when I listen to Japanese voice while reading the English text, I often get the impression that the English text aren't verbatim translation from Japanese. Plus, as you mention it in the middle, English (text & voice) and Japanese (voice) tones sometimes don't match. E.g., at least in one video game I get the impression of sarcasm from the English voice/text, but the Japanese text lacks that feel and sounds a bit generic (or maybe Japanese aren't as big on sarcasms as westerners? I'd like to hear from you abou this)

I actually find the opposite situation far more often and it infuriates me - I'm watching the Dub of an anime and the subtitles totally don't align with what the characters are saying because they're taken from a more literal translation, or a translation made by a different crew, and Netflix or whoever decided its the same and there is effectively no closed captioning available for the dubbed anime as a result.
