    • @theonewhowrotethis5681
      @theonewhowrotethis5681 5 месяцев назад +11

Yeah, JelloApocalypse / Brendan Blaber mostly did some voice acting for some characters here and there (mostly 2019+). He's the dub voice for Combat Agent 6 in _Combatants Will Be Dispatched_ and has done some other dubs here and there. I believe Lovely Complex was the only work where he was a localizer/voice director (and will likely be the last since he got blacklisted by Discotek, the distributor of the work that Sound Cadence Studios dubbed this time around).
The other thing worth considering is that a sizable chunk of his prior works as a voice actor was with Sound Cadence Studios, the company that handled the dub for Lovely Complex. Him getting blacklisted from Discotek and naming one of his close friends, Marissa Lenti, as one of the writers who agreed with him on his Patreon post (Discotek claims the opposite, so there's conflicting info here) will likely harm his chances of getting future gigs (both writing and voice acting) with Sound Cadence Studios by association. I seriously doubt Discotek will distribute stuff from SCS if Blaber is involved with it in any capacity. If Sound Cadence Studios decides to not hire him in the future for anything, then he pretty much lost a stream of revenue. If Sound Cadence Studio takes a step even further and decides to tell other localization studios to not hire him, then there goes his anime career in general.
Burning bridges with your prior employer is a sure-fire way of getting removed from the industry as word easily spreads between different hiring managers. Nobody in the current digital age wants to be associated with an individual that has the potential to give them bad press as that can cause sales to tank hard.

    • @theonewhowrotethis5681
      @theonewhowrotethis5681 5 месяцев назад +3

@@binkyboy448 Yeah, if I'm understanding right, Sound Cadence Studios basically handled the hiring process that led to JA being added to the show's writing crew. Marissa Lenti, one of the people who handles a lot of projects at SCS, was a really good friend of JA (doubt they still are good friends now since JA effectively threw her under the bus by naming her in his Patreon post), so she decided to call in a favor due to Lovely Complex's dub being low budget in general (like you said, JA basically worked for free). I bet she's facing a lot of scrutiny now (I don't agree with her 100%, but I don't wish her any ill will as I can see this getting worse).
This wasn't the first time that Brendan Blaber / JelloApocalypse worked with them as he handled some of the voices here and there. This was the first time that he wrote for them, however (according to sources like Behind the Voice Actors), and this will be the last time that he will write for them as Discotek, a frequent collaborator with SCS, blacklisted him from future works as a writer. I wouldn't be surprised if this incident led to JA being banned from SCS in general since SCS wouldn't want to risk the relationship between themselves and Discotek. This could spread to other areas of the industry if word spreads fast and other studios care enough to remove him from their works (as nobody wants to work with someone who badmouths them behind their back).

Not worth the risk anymore. There are too many cases of japanese games and shows being borderline unrecognizable from the Japanese originals to give any ""localization"" the benefit of a doubt. Until there are proper rules, regulations or laws put in place to prevent these power tripping bozos from vandalizing someone else's work, all localizations should be considered bad until proven otherwise. It's one thing to change out japanese culture themes and terms for the closest western equivalent to prevent confusing the viewer, it's an entirely different thing to make changes to fit the localizer's beliefs, politics or just because they think they could write it "better". Ghost Stories is the exception that _proves_ the rule, not a justification to just write whatever

@@RaiRai214 laws?? lmao, that'd be insane. Freedom is a thing, people can make parodies if they want to. Just don't support localisations you don't like. And just rate things individually how they are, it's dumb to just call something bad without knowing if it is, and disrespectful. The amount of stuff being localised is so much right now with how many games come out in so many different countries, the majority of localisations will be fine, with a small portion being awful and a small portion being excellent. An example is the Final Fantasy 14 localisation team, they did such an insanely good job there's even a documentary detailing what they did to make it so accurate among many different languages and cultures.

He has a superiority complex and thinks that he can get away with pretty much anything, so I'm not too surprised that he would cause a stir for a show that he disagreed with. Ultimately, he pretty much got what he deserved for trying to get his co-workers thrown under the bus for a show that he didn't agree with (that is, being blacklisted from localizations of classic shows and potentially getting blacklisted from other shows since word spreads around fast across the internet).

Oh shit, it's the same dude that was begging for a role in RWBY, didn't get it and then made his thinly-veiled "so this is basically" hitpiece on the show, intentionally misrepresenting a lot of his major "critique" points to make it seem much worse than it is, out of spite for not getting cast. So no surprise there that he's a narcissist who thinks he writes better than anyone (despite his personal project making the EXACT same mistakes he calls out in his "this is basically" series as awful and ruining to the shows in question)

    • @Mirality
      @Mirality 5 месяцев назад +20

That's not how that works. The "so this is basically" series is a parody that pokes fun of silly things in the original. You can't write that sort of parody without being a fan of the original. You wouldn't even want to, because you have to watch a lot of it to come up with the gags. It's not dissimilar to doing an abridged series.
Having said that, that's not the sort of thing you should be doing in a translation project, unless like Ghost Stories you're basically asked to up front.

Hello, Lovely Complex watcher here and I'd like to clarify that I'm 200 percent sure that the line "trans radar" is no where in the show. Even so nobuko even calls seiko sweet and cute when she compliments her (nobukos) bracelet.
They di reveal that seiko is a biy but the character is treated with respect in the series. But it is played as a joke at the time cause like you said seiko is used as a "trap". Pretty much the literal definition in this case.
EDIT: the character is fully trans but I'd like to apologize because I forgot her line confirming it in the show, she said that "she feels like God put her in the wrong body" pretty much confirming her as transgender. That still doesn't change what I said earlier. The character is never treated with disrespect. Seiko is never told or seen wearing boys clothes and the reveal of her being transgender I would say is played kinda like a trap as seiko looks, acts and sounds completely like a girl so when it is revealed people are surprised. The male lead as well and with reason as seiko had kissed him full multiple times before the reveal. The reveal also comes at a strangely awkward moment for the male lead too cause they're in the nurses office and seiko has her shirt off so him getting freaked out about it is a bit justified as seiko is impulsive when it comes to love. However later in the episode seiko dispares because she thinks that otani might find her disgusting. Otani tells seiko face to face that he does not find her disgusting and tells her that cheer girls are cute (because seiko a trans character is in the cheerleader team and is shown in full outfit in the episode.)
The trans representation in this show, in my opinion as someone who is not trans, is really good and I would put it on par with Fire Emblems Gay Hero speech from the second tiger and bunny movie. On that note for an anime from 2007 it's very progressive thinking and handling. The anime let's Seiko be Seiko.
For jello to claim it as transphobic shows that he's just a narcissistic ninny muggins. Or a narcissistic moron.
While i remember nobuko constantly saying that she gets a strange feeling about seiko that something just seems weird about her no where in the subs i watched say anything about a "trans radar" cause they all thought she was a girl.
Seiko shows up in episode 4 and at the end of episode 5 is it revealed that she is a guy.
The trans radar i think is Blaber just using his own words to describe the situation and venting his OWN OPINION on how he viewed the situation.
I pray that the most that they did was take all the energy, the character and flavour out of the dub and its just a bland flavorless mess and use the crunchyroll subtitles.
Thats all i hope for. He says rika has no emphathy.
Nonononono let me say this the character otani has insecurities about his height because his girlfriend in middle school broke up with him for a taller guy. It hurt him pretty bad cause he was nuts about this girl. Now going into highschool he is still hung up on his ex cause he originally goes for a girl who LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE HIS EX. Otani is in an abusive relationship with him self and guess what when he gets rejected by this new girl guess who is the one to cheer him up and kick him in the pants and get him right back out there, Risa.
So i absolutely do not know what the hell blabermouth is talking about Risa being useless. Shes a gorl trying to break her way out of the friend zone.
It is already a well told story and say we made it better can only prove that you just ripped it to shreds.
Its a well balance of comedy and romance that uses chracters with flaws and insecurities. Risa is a tall flat chested girl that isnt super girly or feminine. Otani is a short male who's insecurity is that hes a short male, and a but of an idiot.
The two start as friends but risa realozes the more she hangs out with Otani that more she actually has feelings for him.
The two go through barriers and obstacles and all that make it an interesting story. It takes its time with the story and not have ot move at a break neck pace so we know how the characters feel. Yeah its slow in that aspect but theres eniugh comedy and character moments thst you don't notice and it keeps the story moving. Hell nobuko leaves later in the series and shes the main leads best friend. And they have a whole thing with her boyfriend being supportive but letting her know how he truly feels about it and how much he loves her.
Blabermouth just didnt like this anime and said "Durrrrr I thunk ayc Cood dos a betturd joyb thayn, anyone else" (im sorry i couldn't continue with the country accent it was annoying me)
This was done in the same vain as the Velma Series. Just a bynch of narcissistic know nothings that know nothing but think they know everything.
This is the first time i will say that i don't respect someones opinion. But really can you blame me cause he didnt respect anyones opinion when they liked this show.

18:06. It's because they don't have a spine. Instead of "proudly" (which they like to go on about) standing up and refusing to do something against their moral compass, they'd rather benefit from the thing they don't agree with, while clandestinely working to undermine it in a passive aggressive sort of way. When they do this, they demonstrate to the world the sort of people who are attached to their ideology. If they really cared about being morally upright, and honestly felt their position was morally true, then they wouldn't want to risk damaging its good name by associating it with morally reprehensible actions. Which falsely representing yourselves to others is deplorable, vandalizing other people's work is morally reprehensible, falsely billing for a job you did not do is immoral, and damaging an IP has down stream effects which hurt a lot of people who all invested in the success of the work (such as all of the animators).

Discotek and Sound Cadence are usually really solid, however. Discotek released Angel Cop and Violence Jack, two of THE most offensive shows of all time, uncut, and Sound Cadence has a great track record with making new dubs for classic shows (with Gunbuster's recent dub being one of the best examples). This is just a case of bad vetting of freelancers (JA had nothing to do with the prior releases that Sound Cadence had, and he was only brought on the project since the project was pretty much low budget and one of the writers decided to call in a favor from one of her friends to help her with the writing process). Whomever handled the hiring of freelancers for this project will DEFINITELY need to be more judicious with the hiring process in the future, however.

I encountered Jelloapocalypse’s videos a few years ago. I found his first arc of Epithet Erased absolutely phenomenal and hilarious. His “This is Basically” and movie review videos, on the other hand, were awful. His video on RWBY felt like he hadn’t actually even watched the show and was just regurgitating every bad faith criticism he’d encountered for it online. He completely missed the point on Studio Ghibli’s Only Yesterday and labeled it as their worst film ever. Watching those videos was so frustrating to me because even with his inflated ego and awful personality, I could still plainly tell that he has genuine writing and comedic talent. I dropped his channel shortly after since I just knew it was only going to be a miserable experience.

Okay, so I've read the entire manga, and watched the first 6 episodes of the dub. This includes the episodes where Seiko (the trans character) was introduced. Honestly, so far it seems like editors really did catch and correct at least most of Jello Apocalypse's changes. The story still remains accurate to the source, and the character personalities are still intact. There are times where it feels like the anime is rushing through the manga's material at lightning speed, but that's an issue with the anime adaptation itself, not the dub. My guess is that either Jello made all of these posts before he realized that his changes didn't make it through, or he did know, and made these posts out of spite, as a way to sabotage the show before it made it to the western market, because he knew how fans would react to the idea of changes being made to the source material. Honestly, now I just feel bad for everyone this moron worked with. They're being made to pay for this gremlin's actions, even though it really does seem like he was acting alone.

The sad thing is this sentiment PERMEATES all across the localizing industry today. With the exception of Sentai Filmworks who actually try to do their best to keep dubs as original to the script as possible, all other studios do not. This is mainly what lead Funimation to dying out.

Sentai Filmworks has also been infested with wokeness. Episode 4 of To Love-Ru is an example that comes to mind. Woke localisation didn't kill Funimation. It did accellerate it though. Brief premise: Discotek has been my favorite western anime distributor. To give an idea I have bought the entire 70s series of Mazinger Z from them twice. Once on DVD and again for the Blu-Ray. I had bought IGPX on DVD and I was gonna upgrade to the Blu-Ray. I pre-ordered Lovely Complex day one and I got it about a week ago. I am disgusted. I admittedly saw red flags within Discotek around the release of the Re: Cutie Honey blu-ray with the dub including a line about misgendering. I ultimately let it go because the subs have a line of not confusing the person for a man when she was a woman. This is just gross. What’s worse is if Jello never said anything. If people just bought the disc, played the dub and find out what was put on there, there would be no statements. At best, they would keep quiet and wait for the whole thing to blow over. Putting in a little conjecture for a moment, considering Discotek was paying so little money for the dub (and didn’t really want to originally), this tells me either it wasn’t enough money for them to care (a gift horse if you will) which implies negligence at best or they had eagle-eye oversight and were fine with it, which is compliance and much worse. This only gets worse if you watched the livestream where they announced the release and hyping up how much they love the series. Meanwhile behind the scenes, they were overlooking scripts from a guy who said “if you don’t include this, I quit,” which the correct response is “there is the door.”

I think this will be a one-time issue with Discotek and that they'll be WAY more careful with choosing who they work with in the future. However, I also think that this is a wake-up call for them to care more about the smaller projects in the future (mostly better vetting of subcontractors, IMO).
The dub team for this show, Sound Cadence, handled Gunbuster's new dub really well and has done well in their other projects. Amber Lee Connors, the head of the team and the dub actress for Risa, cited this show as a huge passion project, so she basically called in a bunch of favors to get this show dubbed (Discotek gave them a pretty low budget for this show, so some people basically worked for free or almost free).
Furthermore, Discotek handled their past releases of stuff like Lupin III and Urusei Yatsura well. Discotek's Angel Cop Remastered Steelbook release even added literal subs for the original Japanese dub (the one that is somewhat antisemetic at times) after the prior English releases of the show that Manga Entertainment released had altered subs and dubs.
Most of the stuff that JelloApocalypse claimed that he altered also didn't make it into the final dub (clips of the show on X/Twitter prove this). In fact, further investigation of the show revealed that JA intentionally lied about details about the show to make it seem more transphobic than it actually was and that he "fixed" it to make it less transphobic (not the case at all as the "trans radar" that he claimed was a fashion radar). As such, JA is being an insufferable dweeb that is ruining the reputation of those associated with him in the project (Marissa Lenti for naming her as one of the other writers that disliked the project [I bet she's fuming that JA mentioned her in his Patreon post], Sound Cadence for being the dub team, and Discotek for being the distributor).
Discotek and Sound Cadence do need to handle a LOT of damage control, however, as their negligence in the hiring/vetting process led to this unneeded controversy. They REALLY need to tread carefully to get people to not write-off their future products. I hope JA get's blacklisted from the entire localization field so he doesn't ruin things again for anyone (both the fans and his co-workers).

    Hi @otakuspirit !
You summed things up so well. You're so on point. I need to add my two cents, even if it includes things you've already mentioned in your video. Sorry in advance for potentially repeating myself in the process.
After hearing of this Lovely Complex fiasco, I've lost a lot of confidence and trust in Discotek, MediaOCD and Sound Cadence. Even after reading their swift responses multiple times, I'll have to assume that they're probably going for this wider / modern / global audience nonsense. Since they claimed that their rewritten scripts were supervised and approved by the original creators and producers, they'll need to prove that to us by publishing and presenting real unaltered, undiluted, undistorted receipts us, even if this subsequently leads to violations of so-called NDAs. I don't care. As long as they refuse to do so, I might be forced to entertain the thought of boycotting anything Discotek-related, too. Discotek, MediaOCD and Sound Cadence need to be reminded on every single occasion whenever they make official announcements. Saboteurs along with their enablers and apologists need to know that they can't just waltz in and vandalise things actual fans love. Customers and fans vote with their wallets. If those involved abuse the trust of customers and fans, customers and fans will rightfully keep their wallets closed and never come back. Discotek, MediaOCD and Sound Cadence need to heed that advice!
Again, those involved in translations need to respect the source material and keep the intent and content as close to the original as possible. I'm aware that 1 to 1 translations and that perfection are impossible. Those who want to resort to moral policing have absolutely no right to change content because someone finds it problematic or outdated. No more punch ups, smoothing over "rough patches", etc.. The true fans are the real target audiences. Censorship defenders and apologists should cease spouting this "global / wider / modern audience" or "sensibilities" nonsense!
These woke localisers need to be added to databases and even blacklisted from the translation profession and the entire Japanese entertainment industry forever.
Never ever forget! Never ever forgive! Make everyone remember that! So much so that it's (proverbially) burnt into people's minds for all eternity!
Unfortunately, the honest and professional translators who actually and genuinely enjoy and respect the source material are put in a bad light because of the actions and the behaviour of the rotten apples.
Discotek's response may have been swift, but it sounded way too sugar-coated and contradictory for my liking. It sounded like corporate doublespeak in my opinion.

Most people usually will never knew that it was a new dubbing if they watch it for the first time anyway.
Still I don't approve their intention to change the original character plot since it make the return watcher feels like they watching a different anime even if it was adapted better.

Regardless of what you think of Trump, the video Jello made came across as if you don't agree with me you're a bad person. I used to watch their videos until then. Jello said the quet part out loud in terms of the American anime industry. Hopefully, they're black listed because of how blatant this is, but I think that's giving the localizers too much credit.

I want it on the record that I do, in fact, believe that localization changes are perfectly acceptable and in some cases actually necessary. The people who are likely to consume a dub do not come from the same culture as the original writer, and accordingly, may lack the cultural background necessary to grasp the meanings and ideas that the author was trying to evoke; thus, I have always felt that hewing too close to the literal text, without heed to how the audience is likely to interpret the result, is _more_ disrespectful to the original creator than attempting to understand the work on their terms and altering the work to evoke similar feelings in the new audience.
This particular person definitely appears to be trash. However, I don't agree with the notion that their partner is equally guilty of having an improper mindset simply on the basis that they worked on this project that made changes to the original work. I would need to see some additional evidence to be convinced of that.

The unproffessional idiots needed to take this into consideration. The series belongs in the shoujo category meaning it's a series aimed at teenage girls. A romantic comedy in this style follows certain aspects just as if you'd expect to see guns in an old cowboy film. From what I gather these idiots don't really have a leg in to work with anime in general. Secondly, this is rated as one of the best shoujo series of its era alongside others like Itazura na Kiss. The fools should have stopped for a second to think it must have done something right. At the end of the day their job should be to remain as faithful as possible whether they hate it or not. I'm not even a chic and I enjoyed the original Japanese show. The main character Risa is also voiced by Nami's voice actress in One Piece and she's hilarious here too. It's a pretty solid lighthearted romantic comedy, no over the top love affairs as it involves inexperienced high school kids learning on the go. It's crazay that I used to like dubbs one upon a time and now I don't trust any American dubbing company for a second. Funimation ruined itself on its own too.

@@TheSaltyGendo The translator is the VA in most cases. They hire a western VA to translate as well as voice for a Japanese anime. Some exceptions are probably Studio Ghibli, but they are heavily involved in their anime. They hire separate translators for famous US actors to simply read out the script.
The AI will happily read out a script verbatim. It's their versatile voice mimicry and inflections that have shown leaps and bounds over the years. They can even fake famous actors.
That said I really liked the American VA's for a number of anime in the past, e.g. Yu Yu Hakusho.

Don't know anything about Love Complex but tbh I have a huge bias against shoujo genre especially some of the old stuff. Lots of of weird, creepy inappropriate stuff in there. Even in beloved by me series like Fuit Basket there was enough stuff like that. So I kinda understand what this dub localizer is coming from. BUT. I totally agree with your sentiment though, if you don't like it then walk away! This letter was incredibly insufferable and cringy, even if everything that was told about the story and characters is true.
Also, I do think I have to call out some people hating on Dubs and this specific case that there is a number of if beloved Eng dubs especially from older series that are really different from the original script, basically it's the same here, localazier "improved" it and made it their own story. The most infamous example is Ghost stories Dub. Nobody would give a shit about this series if it wasn't basically rewritten by Dubbers. But apparently it was shit anyway so no one cares, besides unlike with this Love complex example in Ghost Stores Dubbers added a lot of inappropriate stuff for fun rather than remove it.
But even in the initially eally good anime some beloved Dubs had a lot of creative freedom. Like Yu Yu Hakusho. Dub had a lot of fun with it and added lots of jokes, rewritten some and made it overall a more fun experience in my opinion. Lots of people love Kaguya-sama Dub and it also sometimes goes into almost Abridged territory.
Basically my point is don't be hypocrites and don't throw the baby with the water.

Erm... Japan is in a very sensitive situation now about people changing adaptations and deviating from the original works... a manga author (Ashihara Hinako) recently ended her own life after some issues happened during the drama adaptation of her manga (Sexy Tanaka-san). This has sparked off a lot of debate about secondary works in general and how the original work and author should be respected. I would say a dub is at least a secondary work, if not a tertiary work since it is based on the anime adaptation, which is a secondary work of the original manga. For Sexy Tanaka-san, the person who wrote the script for the drama has been getting a lot of "attention" because she is known for making her own changes to original works, thinking that she is making those works better... Personally, I am fine with changes being made during adaptations if those changes are made to make the work shine in the new medium, but at the very least, the original author must agree to those changes. The original author must be given respect because he/she was the one who actually created the work in the first place.

Imagine if Code Geass' Zero Requiem was just explained as throwing nukes at the sun.
