Wtf Osaka, Japanese is already so difficult....
For an italian it's simple to pronounce
You have tons of these dialects in Japan... LOTS of them.
Osaka is actually very similar to the standard Japanese. Go to North Tohoku or South Kyushu, you hear a totally new language.
Japanese is easy
I don't know where you come from
If it's hard for you, then your mother tounge must be so much different from japanese
Pronounce is easy for spanish speaker, i think japanese is easy for latín lenguaje
I'm Japanese living in Tokyo who is originally from Aichi (which is central part of the main island).
If you are learning Japanese language, don't worry too much about dialect. Only those who are determined to live in Kansai region may need to learn the Kansai dialect.
If you are from aboard, anyone who can speak some level of Japanese itself will impress Japanese people a lot, and standard Japanese is understood 100% anywhere you go in Japan.
So don't worry!!
I live in Osaka and I love how the people here have so much pride for their own dialect! I love Osaka dialect💕
Question. Does local tv shows in Japan with Kansai dialect gets translated? ありがとうございます。
but they are sometimes unnecessary harsh to people with similar dialect. they get offended once they think people speak fake Kansai dialect(エセ関西弁). I speak Mie dialect, which is kinda similar to Kansai one, and some Osaka people tell me like "Are you mocking Kansai dialect?" "Are you speaking fake Kansai dialect". I'm sick of those kinds of people! I just speak my onw dialect where I grew up. I don't care what dialect others use. It's good they have pride of their own dialect, but they definitely should understand there are a lot of local dialects similar to Kansai dialect.
@@user-ly9vg7bp6l That is quite true! There are so many kinds of Kansai dialect. I wish people didn't discriminate like that.
@@GRM0420 Hmm, I have never looked very closely if the subtitles are in standard Japanese... so I can't say.
@@GRM0420 Oh, you asked this twice! I have never paid attention to that very closely, so I can't say.

Being a man from rural Virginia learning Japanese, I feel like I should make an effort to learn the Kansai dialect to retain a more country style of speech.
It's not really country style, especially since Osaka is one of the biggest cities in Japan. I would say it's more like the difference between how sone African Americans(thinking of the Baltimore dialect) speak and how most white Americans speak. Not really country or city, just a different style of speaking and slang.
Learn the shikoku or hokkaido dialect for more country side I think
@@miliniumo147 To be fair, I feel llike I've seen it more than a few times where characters in video games or anime that are speaking in Osaka-ben get translated into American english as either being Midwestern or Southern (or in the case of Lotta Hart from Phoenix Wright, both)
@@miliniumo147 I think the phrase you’re looking for is Ebonics. I wouldn’t say “most African Americans” speak it either. It has more to do with geographics than demographics. 🤦🏾♀️.
@@JoudanJanaiHa sorry, most of the African Americans in my area speak with a different slang/dialect, but you're right. Not all of them do.
I like the Tokyo accent for how crisp it sounds but Osaka accent is so charming. Kyoto accent is also very sweet and cute.

Conclusion: Osaka Ben is way more fun. :D I lived in Osaka for a year and I never learned the way tokyo people say it... So when I started to take lessons again in germany and met up with some friends from tokyo they started laughing when I said: "sou yana!" Hahaha. Or "chau" instead of "chigau" haha.
:D I want to visit Osaka some time in the future as well, if possible study there for a year. I'm from Germany as well, and I'm not too sure which dialect I like better. The Tokyo-one sounds way more familiar from the expressions I heard in anime.

This is awesome 👏 I’m just now getting to understand Japanese better and it’s so cool to hear the differences between the dialects.
So I had to learn romaji to pronounce their words, katakana to learn their words for our words, then hiragana and kanji to read their words along with the different readings, and now you're telling me each city has their own version of the language? I quit. 😂
Youre such a drama queen. Kansai is only spoken in the kinki region.

You do realize this was a joke, right?
Don't worry.
With ~200 languages spoken here,
We Indonesian have it worse.
(´ ∀ ` *)
@@blackxcherry22 yes but the joke makes no sense. "Each city has their own version of the language" ??? That's like saying each american city speaks a different version of english just because regional dialects are a thing. It makes no sense and thus isn't funny.

Wow, amazing! Thank you so much for this video clip, Miku sensei. After almost 40 years, I've finally found my answer regarding spoken Japanese in the 細雪 (Makioka sisters) movie. No wonder they sounded a little "funny" because the film used thoroughly in Kansai dialect instead of the "standard/Tokyo" Japanese. Come to think of it, I assume the author Tanizaki Junichiro probably wrote all the characters' dialogues in the Kansai dialect. Interestingly, by the time Tanizaki wrote 細雪, he had already lived in Kyoto for over 25 years. And I presume all of the nuances of the Kansai dialect got lost when translated to another language (i.e., English). I hope someday I'll be able to read the original Japanese novel and grasp the classic Osaka essences again.
I love osaka dialect because of heiji from detective conan.. my heart melts everytimes he speaks

I just realized now that the Japanese google translate bot has a kansai dialect
So timely. My student in an Eikaiwa brought up a topic regarding Japanese differences in the usage of certain expressions and the accents in some prefectures. Sugoi! Got a new subscriber.
Kansai dialect is the best! I really want to visit Osaka and experience it for real one day!
You won't notice it as a tourist. Everyone in shops uses hyoujungo. You'd have a better chance of hearing something different in Kyoto. And yes, it is the best.
I think traditionally the majority of people are used to Osaka dialect as the main representative of Japanese language, maybe it's because of how it sounds?
I love learning the differences between standard and kansai dialects! To me, Kansai, and Osakans in particular, come across as more warm and personable.
isn't that chow-chow, right?

Osaka Ben is much funnier, but as a Portuguese speaker, ね is much easier to speak, cause we already have "né" that has the same use that in Japanese.

A intonação de Osaka é muito mais amigável ao sotaque brasileiro na minha opinião
It's like the local language in Indonesia, namely Sundanese, if you know Sundanese you will know the different intonation between "Sundanese Bandung (fine dialect)" and "Sundanese Karawang (coarse dialect)".
*The Sundanese tribe is the tribe with the second largest population after the Javanese in Indonesia.

The first time I was in Japan (at the very beginning of my Japanese-learning journey), I was staying with a family in Osaka. The thing that still always pops into my head is わからへん、haha. Also, a friend there taught me to say おおきに. 😁

If it is hard, just learn the Tokyo (main) dialect.
You don’t need to learn the different Japanese dialects unless you want to, or you are planning on living in Japan but not in the Kanto region.
Good luck with your studies~!
Lol just learn Tokyo and you can get by easily. Almost every Japanese is familiar with Tokyo dialect cause it's considered Standard Japanese.
Yep there are dialects. For now I've only heard Kansai & Fukui dialect. But I heard there are various dialects like Hokkaido one, Okinawan (that's literally like a different language on its own) & other northern & southern dialects
Here's a little secret for you.....pretty much every language in this world has dialects xD
Dialects can be difficult to understand💦
There are many dialects in Japan.
But as long as you can speak standard Japanese, you will be understood by people all over Japan.
And if you go to Osaka, Osaka people are one of the most cheerful people in Japan, so they will try to communicate with you through gestures.
And not only that, but also in other parts of Japan, the Japanese people as a whole will try their best to communicate with you, so as long as you can speak standard Japanese, your conversation will be quite smooth! :)
One of my Japanese teachers is from Tokyo, and the other is from Osaka! I’ll have to listen more closely to see if I can pick up on their different accents/dialects
@Ivthia - have you noticed their differences since then?
Thank you for teacher in Japanese to us I really appreciate that
Wow...15 years of subbed anime and I didn't realize there were such STRONG dialects in Japan :O
That was quite interesting, thank you for the demonstration. :D
i wanna go to Kansai, but everyone mainly teaches textbook or kanto dialect. I feel it's going to be rough communicating for awhile. :/
People understand Kanto dialect (basis for modern standard Japanese) in Kansai no problem; also, due to many Osakan comedians on TV, Osaka-ben (a type of Kansai dialect) is not unfamiliar in Tokyo! If you know standard, the jump to Kansai isn't too hard.
@@SmileyTrilobite Thank you for the heads up. Eases my concerns for sure.
It's so weird seeing Yusuke on an English channel (that teaches Japanese), I'm so used to him speaking Spanish (and Japanese, of course).
Hey! My dude is here, I luv his Spanish channel, that's good shit
The only Osaka ben I can distinguish is in Detective Conan .. While Hattori Heiji and Kazuha talking .. Other than that, I am really stupid to distinguish which is Osaka or Tokyo😂😂
Also Keroberos (Kero-Chan) from Card Captor Sakura, he spent too long in Osaka before Sakura woke him up. 😂
The little じょうだんだよ when she said her dialect is better lol
Just when I expected it will be one languange to study, came out it has three writing systems at least...and now I know every region has it's own dialects...man..

Don't forget about pitch accent
Which is harder than Chinese tones
hi sorry for being annoying but... As a language learner, sometimes we need support from people. And many times its hard to find this support in our family or friends. So I created a discord server for all language learners: discord.gg/8MN8Xz5uXA
I hope you will find it useful and we can all help each other ❤️ Thanks if anyone is joining !!!
@@lesthermiranda1794 Chinese tones are much harder than pitch accent, and also much more important. 99% of the time a pitch accent "mistake" is no big deal. In fact it's not even necessarily a "mistake", it's just a non-standard pitch, and many natives have non-standard pitch themselves. In fact some natives do not even use pitch accent, really. At the end of the day you can afford to not worry about pitch. Chinese tones, however, are crucial.
Even after living in Kansai for more than a year I haven't been able to put my finger on what the difference in intonation is, so the first few in the video were really helpful! I found that my intonation is closer to kansai-ben now haha
OMGGG!!😭😭💜💜💜💜💜 the kansai accent is so adorable !!! It makes me remember lovely complex the anime 💖💖💖💖💖💖
waaaahh.. I find kansai dialect so cuuuuute.. or miku sensei is soo damn cuute..🥰 It's like I want to move from Tokyo to Osaka😁❤
Thank you, Sensei, for the lovely & informative video! Can one use the standard Japanese in Osaka with local people and at work? Or do you recommend speaking in Kansai dialect if one is living in Osaka? ありがとう
Standard Japanese is understandable everywhere in Japan and Japanese people basically speak standard Japanese when they are not in hometown(I don't know the reason but only kansai people tend to use kansai dialect even when they are not in hometown)
Basically, it's considered that if you were not from the region, you shouldn't intentionally speak the dialect because a dialect in Japanese is to learn naturally
That's because "non-native speaker of the dialect" tries to speak the dialect, it usually sounds strange, even when native Japanese speaker mock other dialect where they aren't from
What an awesome video!
This is great! I love kansai dialect!
大阪弁 is the reason I got interested in the language in the first place, heh.
I’m in Tokyo so I was so surprised by Osaka dialect! It’s cute, I love it!
I LOVE Osaka ben. When I taught english in Japan I lived in the inaka in Hyogo-ken and visited kobe, osaka and Kyoto frequently! My kids taught me the nande ya nen, and tabehen/tabehenkatta it was so unique! I take tutoring online and sometimes I still let a wakarahen slip every now and then xD
I just love the Osaka dialect so much!
I've never been to Japen but when i get there I would love to hear that dialect in person!
I found about it from Lovely Complex for the first time and love it immediately ♥
My first exposure to kansai-ben was when I was watching the anime Lovely Complex (ラブコン) 😄 at first I was confused.. it sounded a bit different but still japanese 😄

Glad to see Yuyu wearing the super traditional horizontal striped shirt. Really popular for some reason.
Wait. I know you) I’ve heard your podcast. Really liked it. Are you going to make more episodes?
I've lived three years in Kanto and one in Osaka, and the Osaka dialect rubbed off on my super fast because it is way easier to pronounce than standard Tokyo Japanese :P
There seems to be an aversion towards hard consonants in Osaka, which is also closer to my native language (Danish).
As an American studying the language and looking to visit again in 2021, I'm anticipating being twice as lost linguistically when I get to the Kansai area lol
Tbh I bet most people there will know that foreigners are more familiar with standard Japanese (that is if they assume any of us they meet speak Japanese at all)
I love how kansaiben sounds. :) My first time to hear it was from Ichimaru Gin (Bleach), since then I listen for it every time I watch something in Japanese!
Ngl, the hardest part in learning Japanese is kanji 😂
Osaka dialect is much easier for a British English speaker. The long vowel sounds are much closer to our spoken English intonation. Just ask a random person from the UK to say 'konichi wa' and they will sound like Osakaben
I've been living here in Osaka for 3 years 😂and still learning Kansai dialect..but I'm already getting used to the "hen" "akan" and" yade "😂
Funny how, even by not studying the language, everything you said in this video still sounds familiar to me. Watching subbed animes works like magic. Arigatou gosaimasu for the video (i apologise for the mistakes)

First time I knew Kansai dialect was from "Chihayafuru" (live action) because Arata Wataya's character (which is played by Mackenyu) spoke with this dialect. Then it became more familiar to my ears when I watched "Let's Go Jets!". I think both of dialects (Tokyo or Osaka/Kansai) are equally good and each of them has their own uniqueness. ☺❤
