- Part of what makes Kageki Shoujo so great is its English translations! Let's walk through a few examples of Katrina Leonoudakis' translations and see how she helps bring this inspirational story about teen girls in the theatre come to life.
If you want to watch Kageki Shoujo, please note that it does deal with some problems girls and young women face (sexual assault, sexism, eating disorders and fatphobia.) This video does not touch upon these scenes.

Repeating this here in case it was missed, because this is an important note: all the translation analysis in this video is mine, not Katrina's (except for the parts where she's talking.) My breakdowns are meant to show you THAT her choices worked and WHY they worked - not necessarily why SHE made those choices. She's generally open to answering questions about her translations (as long as these questions are asked in good faith) so if you have any questions for her specifically, find her on Twitter!

I wanna say that the dub for this show is also fucking exquisite and Siv Ryan is now my internal voice for Sarasa. But I loved the subs for this show as well! Both are great ways to experience the show.
I think translating something that's the opposite that the original grammar meant to make lines flow better was the most interesting part of the video. Sarah and Katrina are great translators! 🥰
Why they don't just create their own story then? If you said you liked something in your own language but then came a bunch of weirdos and said you hated that thing. Would you still say it's alright?
Sorry but as someone whos speaks 4 languages translating something in a way that is not literal to its original language means defeat, it means mediocrity and running away.
I generally think the desire towards overly "literal" translations (which can often times be less accurate to the original intent than a "looser" translation) that a lot of anime fans have can hobble certain genres of anime entirely, especially anything comedic. Its great to see someone analyze and appreciate someone that isn't stuck in that modality. (my personal biggest translation pet peeve is the phrase "I'll never forgive you" )
Katrina did a whole thread criticizing translating 許さない as "I'll never forgive you" and yeah, it's always been one of my pet peeves, too.
The italics are great and really help emphasise the character of the translation. The only complaint I have is that the suffixes like -chan and -sensei are _also_ italicised, which has them, in the context of the subs, come off as sarcastic or pointed as well.

I found this channel through Katrina's Twitter and I have loved the season so far. I don't know much Japanese but I love the nuance and hard work that goes into localization and it just kind of got me interested in things like this. Thanks for the great video!
It's great seeing a video celebrating a translation for once, and you can tell Katrina is a genuine fan of the series. This is one of the rare times where the same person has translated the manga, subbed the anime, AND consulted on the dub scripts. (Something I wish happened more often!)
I do have one little nitpick though: How the scene with Grandpa Ken at the 7:40 mark was handled. I understand why Katrina changed it to what she did, but leaving out the kabuki reference removes a nice bit of foreshadowing with Sarasa's backstory and how Ken reacted. But otherwise, very impressed!
This is my favorite new show of the summer season (I'm trying to buy lots of merch for it to show the people in charge that there's lots of interest... I want a season 2!) and this video is so cool and informative about a really interesting part of the process. Thank you!!

I actually picked up the manga in the first place, because I saw that Katarina was translating it! I don't know Japanese, so I can never truly judge a translation -- but I've done a LOT of writing and editing in English. So sometimes I come across a sentence in a subtitled anime or in a manga that just makes me want to break out the red pen, and I always end up re-wording things in my brain before moving on to the next sentence. But with Katarina's work I know that I'm always going to get some really smooth flowing sentences that aren't going to take me out of it! Heck, the only thing that took me out of the Kageki Shojo manga was some of the REALLY GREAT kerning by Aila Nagamine!!!

Ever thought about dropping a course or big video series on how to start breaking down Japanese sentences and translate them? I know you have a few videos doing that, but I would gladly pay for something a bit more structured. I think there’s a big gap on RUclips regarding this. Anyway, you got a new sub 👍

I don't know japanese and english is my second language. I'm not sure what "latin beauty" is supposed to mean, that she is sexy enough to do latin dances like tango, or something else?
It's actually a little vague in Japanese, too, but it's more like that she looks Latina.
Why have I not heard of this anime before? I love Skip Beat and Glass Mask so this is up my alley for sure.
Isn't "hot damn" a bit too "sexual" since after she says "hidoi sekuhara" his response is "kore mo sekuhara ka?" implying that in his mind what he said isn't sexual harassment but is ready to apologize just in case. "Hot damn" is very clearly giving off sexual "DAYUMM" vibes where as "dekkee na oi" just sounds rude.
Had the translation been just "damn, you're tall" and then she goes "that's sexual harassment" to which he would say something like "(this too is) sexual harassment? I apologize" we could get commentary on how people immediately assume the worst and absolutely anything even remotely unprofessional can be potentially sexual harassment. So I guess it really depends on which side you wanna view the scene from, he is sexually harassing her and she is bravely pointing it out OR she is assuming the worst and he is just commenting on society's "over sensitivity"
Either way, "hot damn" made me uncomfortable "dekkee na oi" just sounded unprofessional. That all being said, I'm not fluent enough in the language for my opinion to have any real weight :D
I think the thing about "hot damn" is that while it can come off as sexual, and Sarasa can credibly take it that way, it's also possible to argue that it's _not_ inherently sexual and that one might be forgiven for just blurting it out as an exclamation when caught off-guard.
I'd totally believe that he _doesn't think_ "hot damn" should be an inappropriate statement.
@@MiseFreisin yeah okay, that does make sense. I still hear "hot damn" as sleazy and "dekkee na oi" as just rude, so it's a bit of a mismatch for me but I get your point and that's probably how the translator saw it as well
Making a slangy comment about a someone's body in a professional setting when you don't know them and have power over them is in sexual harassment territory (this is, of course, a gray area and the harasser can completely not be aware of it or not intend it at all!) But yeah, the joke was that the JSDF guy is a bit old in his ways and wants to do the right thing, but has a hard time keeping up.

I'm very familiar with old people since my family is quite close with even distant relatives so I'm beyond used to old people just saying whatever pops in their head without it being even remotely sexual. (Think old children xD) so someone pointing out that a tall person is tall or a fat person is fat or a long-haired person has long hair just doesn't even begin to register as something other than "oh I'm pointing out an observation". I mean I have myself thought "wow that person is tall" if I see a tall person without it meaning anything sexual so saying it out loud sounds just like one step further from that.

This is a great video that again shows of what kind of work goes into translation.
Kageki Shoujo's subtitles are easily the worst translation of anything from one language to another I've seen in my life. The fact that it's bad fanfiction aside, the translator makes mistakes even in things that machine translation gets right. Like misinterpreting 千秋楽 (concluding festivities; final day of a tournament) as a name Chiaki Raku (it's pronounced as senshuuraku, by the way, the "translation" was done from script without watching the actual episode).
