Oooweeee I'm finally back after an extremely busy April! This new translation project has been keeping me very busy, so I'm not going to be able to upload as much as I'd like to this month. Yeah, the "cringe" controversy was where chuuni-byou was translated as "cringe" and people were mad bc many fans know what chuuni-byou is adn they thought it should have been left as chuuni-byou or translated literally (kind of like how they know tsundere and a few other terms.)

Hell there were some assholes that when (Spoiler Alert) in Zombieland Saga they revealed the character Lily Hoshikawa is canonically trans, there were conspiracies about how Crunchyroll altered the subtitles for “woke points”, even though it’s very clear they were full of shit and the main guy spouting these accusations claimed to be Japanese, but wasn’t. The Internet is wild sometimes

There are examples of jokes that work perfectly in both English and Japanese. To the point that I just have to sit back and marvel at how amazing languages can be. One that immediately comes to mind is the one from Railgun where Mikoto is tries to say "Thanks" (ありがとう) but it ends up being misheard as "...ants" (あり...) because she's so embarrassed. There are many more that I regret not having written down over the years. Not quite the same as this joke, but something I wanted to bring up nonetheless.
Regardless, I really think why no one had an issue with the translation of this scene is because of how visual it is and how easy it is to understand and take at face value. The contextual wordplay with the missing pieces of the seaweed takes precedence over the literal meaning of the words. Not to mention, the translation itself fits perfectly into the context of the scene and doesn't come off as meme-ish or cringe-inducing. It's only when something "feels off" that fans suspect translators inserting their own voice into the translations.
Speaking of "feeling off", I'd honestly love for you to tackle actual translation errors in your videos if you ever get the chance to. I don't know if they will be as popular as videos that deal with controversial localization choices, but I feel that it would be both educational and great for fans who don't understand Japanese as some of these mistakes really mess up the meaning of the line and even context of the scene. For instance, there was a line in Episode 1 of Re:Zero S2 Part 2 with Roswaal going, "You want to start over now, when you have me in check," when it should be, "You want to start over now, when you are in check."

I like how you’re using Contra’s spiel but not going over-the-top with it, like using the same music from the beginning of ‘For Whom the Belle Trolls’ (and a little bit of ‘Justice, pt. 1’) and then the music from the beginning of the bath scene in ‘Alpha Males’
Also I gotta say, I definitely feel for those fans who want the literal translation with the notes. They’re often using the anime not just as entertainment for its own sake but as a medium for learning, and localization for mainstream audiences can be misleading for them. I think a better way to go about it would be to add a post-credit scene with relevant notes on the culture or language, or maybe adding them as a bonus feature on the DVD, so everyone is happy that way.
I definitely agree with you. One of the reasons I started learning Japanese in the first place was because I felt that the localizers/translators were lying to me and pulling the wool over my eyes. It felt extremely condescending, as if they were saying I couldn't understand new concepts or wasn't able to comprehend foreign languages or cultures. Being on the other side, I now understand that that's not necessarily the case, but it would be an interesting idea to maybe create subs specifically for Japanese learners.
Haha, though I love Natalie, I actually wasn't choosing the music specifically because she did - I just love J.S. Bach and that concerto was available for free from YT's audio library. 🤷♀️
I've mentioned earlier that I think there's definitely a market for "educational subtitles" in anime. The thing is, anime should be a supplemental learning tool, not primary.
Yeah if these people wanted to learn Japanese there better off going to Japanese language classes to learn the language rather then rely on a medium that's mostly made for entertainment

True because they dont make there own money and rely on other people's money to get what they want, but hey I'm not defending toxic weeabo's because knowing them and the fact they joined the anti-sjw crowd well they basically don't know jack about the reality of japan and don't know jack about the stuff they claim to know ( except for the people who actually know about Japanese and Japan like Sarah herself )
Oh how I sincerely (sometimes) miss the old school fansub days! VKLL was such a king with his Sailor Moon translation and culture notes. Those notes got me interested in Japanese as a culture and language and not just as a source of anime! Of course there was also the downside of fansubs (RIP my first ever Escaflowne viewing via fansub where the vhs video quality was so pixelated I could barely see what was going on 😭), or very poorly or incompletely translated fansubs (RIP Howl's Moving Castle, the fansub's ending was so poorly translated that I literally had no idea what had actually happened until it was officially licensed and released). I understand why companies don't do the notes anymore, but I do still miss them! These days we can usually find answers on the internet for something confusing at least.

Im gonna have to call out you intentionally making the explanation "example" as convoluted and long in your hypothetical example as a means to explain why it wasnt done that way, when we all know that it could be explained much more concisely (and with smaller letters) than shown. But I get it. It goes against the "im quirky and always correct look at me sip my tea, sip, sip, sip" persona you portray. More power to ya. Not knocking your overall argument, but the example you used was so exaggerated that it actrually detracts from it even seeming like youre trying to make a valid point.
IMO I prefer fansubs, I prefer my chuunis as chuuni and my tsunderes as tsundere, the translation note thing died out a long time ago. Also, because I don't like the companies that offer streaming anime.
And as a good bonus, a lot of the time the OP and ED's are translated much earlier than they are to the official releases.
The OPS and EDs aren't translated for simulcast usually bc the songs are under a different license. I wish we could translate those, too, we're just not legally allowed to.

*Kuso is a term for feces, excrement or dung, as well as general negativity as relating to the current contextual situation. IT is a term that is often used as an expletive in casual conversation, or as an expression of dissatisfaction with current or past events. Is this verbose enough to be a 2003 fan translator note yet?

It's not about literal word to word translation, it's about keeping the original intend and not shoving Trans propaganda or hating on weebs (see the Gamergate scandal) by people who don't even watch anime that much
