most auditory pleasing translation out there, but I prefer just calling it "chichibukuro" since its the original and no one can really dispute it and it can just be folded into the english otaku dialect.

Fun fact! The term boobsocks has been used in Western comic book fandom before, though that tweet you showed is right that it's often used to talk about clothing vacuum-sealed to show the curves of each individual breast. The Escher Girls tumblr has a LOT of examples under the boobsocks tag, some of which are over five years old.

Yeah, "tiddy pouch" is the (IMO) more pleasant-sounding alternative I had in my head this entire video, so I'm glad to see you share that thought, Sarah.

I think I agree. When it's relating to humans or the human body, the English word "bag" conjures a lot of negative images. "Old bag" is an insult for people you find unpleasant, "ball bag" is a crude term for testicles in the UK, etc.

This style is a basic MilkMaid Top and according to actual sewing patterns it's simply called the Bust Piece.

Thank you, You did a wonderful job of explaining the subject material, and if you're looking for a more OG term for boob bag in English "tucked" or "painted clothing" It's not something that was discussed that often in the circles I was in, and was just accepted as a emulation of the style in anime especially in the 80's. Also there is a Instagramer who, yes is very well endowed and shows how to tuck and bunched the over-sized shirt to achieve this pillowcased looked in real life.

This whole discussion is so interesting! I'm in the fourth semester of Modern Languages and I'm really amazed by the world of linguistics/translation. Your video put a smile on my face. Translation, linguistics and Anime are a perfect match. Love from Brazil!

I think "boob bag" came about as a literal translation of the most common meanings of "chichi" + "bukuro". It kinda makes sense but it does sound awkward (like how "wrist" in Japanese = "tekubi" = "hand" + "neck" (if you think about it, the wrist is kind of like a neck for your hand but we don't call it that)).
I like "boob gloves", it has parallels to "tebukuro" = "gloves" which uses the same "bukuro", and has connotations of fitting snug like a glove

Thanks for explaining! I felt really dumb hearing "boob bag" in the show and not knowing what they meant. I thought they were referring to some sort of accessory invisible to the outside of the clothing.

This YT channel is a gold mine. Been looking for the next step in taking my Japanese understanding. I find when looking up words in subs they come back entirely different in the translator. Japanese sure is intricate.

Personally, I kinda like the German Dress-Up Darling sub for chichi-bukuro, "Busentasche". It translates to something more formal like "bosom bag" or "bust bag". Might also be a result of limitations of German boob slang.

This just proves that language is like a living thing. It grows and evolves. It branches and forms different families. Example: ENGLISH. You have: British English, Australian English, American English (Southern, West Coast Valley Girl, East Coast New Englander, New Yorker, Mid West Country, Red Neck), etc etc etc. Each of them has a shared base but each also has developed special phrases, and meanings for those phrases or alternate meanings for the same words specific to them.

Thankfully when i googled boob bag i found this video. Thanks sarah, this really stopped me wondering. I assumed it was a japanese term for a particular way of patterning fabric. Having watched your video i would say the best term in english would be skin tight. And i agree with you, boob bag is not an appealing term at all which is why it bothered me enough to looking into it. Anyway, i can now put it to bed & not boggle my mind with it anymore. I'll simple retranslated it as 'skin tight top'...or something similarly bland. Thanks again sarah.

Gloves is really awesome in Japanese. In Chinese we say 'hand sock' for gloves.
Also given politics after 2015 14:18, I am not sure anything disqualifies people anymore.

29 year-old here and I've been watching anime for a LONG time, but confess + love sounds incredibly strange to me. It always has.
Confess + crime/confess + sins/ confess + something bad sounds a lot more natural and is what I consider to be the correct usage, but then again 言語は生き物 lol

Personally I vote for "Wonder Blouse." It uses what we know of the "wonder bra" to describe the situation and more importantly, can be used in polite company. Suppose you're a teacher and you'd prefer your students didn't say "boob bag" in a school setting. That's not quite right. You want them to LEARN how to find ways to express themselves that are APPROPRIATE in a school setting. "Wonder blouse" serves as an excellent alternative.

4:32 .....Boob socks.... the word your looking for is Boob Socks.....and I hate them :(
Catwoman, Power Girl, Poison Ivy, freaking Super Girl, have all been drawn the with the "painted on" look and we tend to call that "Boob Socks" It's like comic artists have no idea how clothed women actually look!
(I know the video is a year old and you probably have your answer but....eh)

I think we require the guidance of some Tailor or "dressmaker " : D. Maybe the anime is "a bit"🤔 exaggerated, but we could search for "dirndl" to see some approximations. Is anyone there a German Tailor?

    huh, that is very interesting.
I myself, just watched the episode and wondered, is a boob bag some sort of a thing, im too much dude to understand?
Being and artist, and drawing them anime ̶t̶i̶d̶d̶i̶e̶s̶ girls, i am curious to find out more about these girl things, that i just dont know anything about.
But apparently it was a case of, some term in japanese, that is just not possible to translate from japanese to english.
Good thing that google searching "boob bag" now on google actually presented this video.
Birth of a new term (in english) due to an anime. Man, things can be weird
