    About that "darkness" sound thing... in his case, isn't that just his voice? Not my favorite band but I've seen them numerous times at festivals or when I gigged myself, it's just how he sounds.

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  6 лет назад +123

      It's the part of his voice that he chooses to emphasize, which is fine. There are a lot of things he could do with his voice, but this is a good example of what he is good at consistently being able to do, long-term.

      @@kentamplin Thanks for the clarification :) I just figured since I heard him talk so often. Of course you're the expert (hence why I take your course) but I just had my thoughts about this so I expressed them. It is however undoubtfully true that the "deep dark vocal style" has turned into some sort of fashion amongst many male vocalists, often because it's the easiest to do without falling out of tune (in my experience). Correct me if I'm wrong :) (btw, you rock, your course rocks, I'm happy to have you as my coach!)

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  6 лет назад +57

      Actually, the "dark" sound is the covering of the voice. You know how we emphasize the BRIGHT sound in KTVA and smiling into the sound, etc? That is the opposite of this dark, "RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR" sound. That's why I emphasized that he has to OPEN UP to go to those higher parts. Dark doesn't work on highs. It's like mixing oil and water. Thanks for your comment, Wesley, and thanks for using my course!

      @@kentamplin Pleasure! I've been singing and gigging for 24 years now, your course is perfect to stay in shape and expand to area's I've never touched before. Being a professional voice actor and session vocalist (vocal studio and all ==> www.vokillzforhire.com , you won't like the style I specialize in ;) ) one can only be good when one can master every style. That's where your course comes in. I've got the dvd's, download version and usb so I can use it at any time when I'm on the road everywhere! Practise between gigs. Keep on Rocking Ken! One of these days I'll book a skype meeting if you still do those.

    The S&G original The Sound of Silence is one of the greatest songs in the history of music. I've said this before but Disturbed's version, and I'm not a Disturbed fan, is the only version that can bring tears to my eyes. Music is and always will be the purest form of expression.

    Disturbed is not usually my taste in music, that being said, for me, this rendition of the S&G classic, was nothing short of brilliant. From the arrangement, to the use of the drums, and David’s voice, is mesmerizing. In my opinion, superior to the original. It just fits the message of the song, and executed flawlessly. Perfection.

    You mentioned him almost sounding "operatic" at 5:02. David is classically trained and it shows in his singing. This version of the song sounds dark because Disturbed wanted it to sound that way. When Paul Simon said, That song is no longer mine. I endorse David's version..." that speaks volumes! On top of it, David had a cold or the flu during this performance, and he had to sing above/around that. Impressive!

    I actually love the low, dark beginning - you can feel the solitude, big emptiness around - it is a silent place, but than step by step the voice takes more energy, and the crowd is around, everything filled by sound, but inside the people there is still the silence and they have to overcome that distance. He is like thunder from the sky with his rough voice trying to brake in to the silence, in to the people. And that is exactly how I felt listening to his version. Simon and Garfunkel explained what is going on and I agreed with them, but David fights against the silence with the same words, but "different song".

    And I smiled at the beauty of this song and this music, and the relevance to the times both now and in the past...

    This is a drummer’s perspective here. One thing I love about David’s voice is how dark it is. I couldn’t help but notice that whenever you (Ken) replicated the singing, it was very bright. I thought I would share that, because I feel like Ken has a naturally bright voice, compared to David’s darker voice. Either way, I love both the song and the analysis.

    One of the most underrated singers of the generation. Dude is an absolute beast.
    Would love to see you review/react to some Axl Rose stuff, specifically his transformation from the 80's/90's to now, which I believe has degraded significantly. His lost his power/raspy tone and is far thinner and almost "squeaky". Which is a huge shame because he had a LEGENDARY range at the top of his game!

    • @davidball6357
      @davidball6357 4 года назад

      I have the answer to that. He claims he has cleaned up his voice which is BS. His range was the absolute biggest ever tested when he was younger. Bass to soprano with no falsetto.. He’s pure falsetto now. He sounds like Mickey Mouse huffin helium. Why: smoking and drinking and never taught to properly protect his voice p

      Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy Indeed it has! I typically do not care for cover versions. There are 2 others that I have found that are amazing, "Tennessee Whiskey" by Chris Stapleton and "Zombie" by Bad Wolves. Dolores O'Riordan was actually planning on recording with them. The day she was set to record her vocals was the day she passed! Bad Wolves went ahead with the project and donated the proceeds to Dolores' children. The video also pays homage to her! It's awesome!

    The story the official video tells is nothing short of amazing! A world without music, a world fighting to recover and the struggle to reunite composers and musicians and how the survival of mankind depends on it. As a lifelong “jock” and athlete, my youngest son plays the piano and is truly amazing. We must never let school programs die out…. We must save music programs at every level in the schools!!!

    I'm not a big Disturbed fan myself. But the first time I heard this I was totally blown away. I immediately sent the link to their video to my wife who is a huge Simon & Garfunkel fan. She was blown away too. This is my first time seeing/hearing them pull this off live. All I can say is, "WOW!" Such incredible passion in his voice. And yeah, he hit every note on live television. Outstanding! He deserves two thumbs up for this killer performance. Amazing! Now...if it's okay to needle you a little bit...I'd like to ask you to find a poppy cover and do something like this where you make the tune something very different than its original. Or if you have already...post a link! Thanks Ken. As always, terrific stuff.

    The really amazing thing is that Ken manages to sing each one of the songs he analyzes in a great way, and imitate both the singers' mistakes and right notes, and so many different styles, in order to make his points clear, but he is never too overly technical, boring or offensive towards the artist.
