I'm an 82 year old Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Mozart, Handel, et al kind of music fan. Never listened to Metal. Didn't particularly care for Simon and Garfunkel or the Sound of Silence. Then one day a year or so ago while looking for a particular piece of music I ran across this song where this bald guy with lots of face jewelry and an angry voice was belting out this song, the kind of thing I normally just quickly pass on by - which I did - and continued on my quest to find that piece I was looking for.
But after a few minutes I got to wondering what that video was all about so I started looking for it and finally found the link. I started the video and my musical life changed. Forever. Long story short. Started listening. Something, David Draiman's voice? reached in and grabbed my soul, I listened, goose bumps appearing, eyes watering, getting choked up to a degree which I had never experienced before.
I later learned that people were creating reaction video's on RUclips so I watched several addressing this cover to see if others had experienced similar emotions and was relieved to find I wasn't alone. I must have watched over a hundred reaction videos at this point because I enjoy watching the joy this song has given others. I have to say that yours has provided the most informative best presented reaction I have yet witnessed. Thank you for that.

Before watching your analysis, there was only one other reaction that I've found to this performance that I felt was unique and honest and humble and genuine. Most miss the mark and have generic comments or criticisms right off the cuff and it cheapens the experience for the viewer. I don't speak a word of Italian, yet nothing was lost in translation because your emotion and intellect when discussing something you're obviously passionate about shines through. Your English subtitles were excellent and convey the exact sentiments you wanted to express.

David Draiman....IMO THE best male vocalist out there. Can go from warm baritone to tenor, to clear as an angelic bell to grit/rasp and back on a DIME. What a powerful voice! Awesome talent and amazing voice control! He has been singing for over 25 years or more...knows how to do distortion WITHOUT harming his vocal cords. His voice has a timber I've never heard before. Definitely. I'm a Disturbed fan and many people underestimate David's vocal range. He can have a voice of an angel and the voice of a devil. He can create sound effects with voice. It saddened me when this beautiful cover came out and so many accused him of using auto tune. It was insulting for some fools to think that. I know better because David is very talented. I know his music and that he had vocal training in school.

    • @sharatainx3990
      @sharatainx3990 3 года назад +2

I agree. This is the case with other heavy metal singers too. People say they are not good singers, they are being judged because of what type of music they sing to, rather than how good and how difficult it really is. I have heard people trash Corey Taylor in Slipknot for "just screaming" and "not being able to sing" in their songs and then I play lets say Vermillion pt 2 and all of a sudden they say "well this guy sings better than the previous song".. When I say it's the same singer then they start trying to find reasons to dislike the singing they just a second ago liked. It is such a shame.

Like the rest of the comments it’s obvious we viewers are pretty much of one accord with Robertos reactions, as well as emotions we experienced when first listening to Disturbeds version of Sound of Silence.
When I first heard David sing Sound of Silence, I’m not sure I was even breathing till the last note finished resonating. He took my breath away as he led me through a wide array of emotions with the most awesome, heaviest, music video ever made. He built it up so great. I've watched this song atleast over 100 times and each time gives me chills and watery eyes...lol This video I feel is more about the story of the song. The Conan Show version I feel is more about all the instruments around him. Both showcase the powerful vocals of David. And during Conan he was really sick and the band made him sit during it because they didn't want him to passout. The show wanted to use auto tune but the squashed that idea. I do believe they used it on one part from what I hear but I can't tell where but regardless being sick he killed it as well!! I can't say enough about this song! Amazing!!

I have been singing for 48 of my 60 years on this planet, performed in Carnegie Hall, Covent Gardens and Cathedral of the Madeleine in Paris. a fan of any kind of music short of Heavy Metal and Rap. Well his song fixed my Heavy Metal problem, I have watched many of Disturber's videos since I experienced this song.
The first time I watched this I just sat with my mouth hanging open, stunned at the end. then I watched it at least15 more times in that sitting, and countless times since. One time I saw a reaction video of this piece of music and I have seen 40 or 50 since then, I like to watch the reviewer and there facial reactions to this song, and see their facial expressions change as the song morphs and changes throughout. Most interesting. Today I saw a click bait for your reaction Roberto and i said "ooo one I have not seen!!" and when you started speaking in Italian I was somewhat bummed until i saw the sub-titles, and off we went into this amazing piece of music.
Being a singer myself, I like voice coach reviews of David's amazing voice. Elizabeth Zarhoff (The Charismatic Voice) and you give the best insight into the techniques he has. I truly enjoyed your reaction and will subscribe to see more from you. The most common word I hear in watching reaction videos for this song is "WOW' which I think you said at least 5 times.
In all the darkness and sadness anger of this video I have yet for anyone to comment on the rya of hope that is present at the very end, did you see it Roberto in your follow up viewings of this?
    Thanks for the great review.
    Richard

I have watched almost every one of these reactions to this song and its funny . Almost all of the people dont know anything about Disturbed and always say they were surprised when he goes up and adds the fry and is in total control of it . However for myself and people that I know that were Disturbed fans before hearing this I remember being surprised at his low slow clear singing in the beginning. You also might be interested in listening to the Live version of this on Conan , and knowing he was sitting down because he was so sick with the flu that they didnt even think he could stand the whole time

I don't know if you understand the English words, but you obviously understand the emotion of the lyrics and song. I am 76, heard the Simon & Garfunkel original in 1964, and did not understand the song then. About a year ago, I came across this version by Disturbed, I called my younger son and told him to listen to it and that I finally understood the song. Your face showed how you became engrossed in the song. You are NOT alone.

I have watched over 100 reactions to this song and none compared to this honest and sincere analysis. The songs author, Paul Simon, who wrote this sitting in the dark on his bathroom floor after the assassination of Robert Kennedy, met David Drayman in person and said to him "Now, this song belongs to you, David." I encourage you to view the live performance on the Conan O'brien show. Just show patience for him as he was I'll with a fever and chills but insisted he still wanted to sing on this night...with no auto-tune; something that many vocal coaches think they here! Lastly, RUclips has a video of David speaking about the writing and performance of it which you may enjoy viewing.

This is the most extensive breakdown I've seen of this. Well done! His range is amazing as he can do the lyrics justice. The first refrain or two is a melancholy, depressing musing on the situation which the singer nails. The next is semi-optimistic, which he goes up an octave and increases his energy. The final lyric of this mood is "hear my words that I might teach you, take my arms that I might reach you" and then switches to raspy anger with "but my words, like silent raindrops fell" (no one is heading his warnings) and continues to the "praying to the neon gods they made", which is the most raspy and aggressive part of his version. Sadly, the song is way ahead of its time since we now see everyone with their heads bowed and hands clasped as if praying, but is actually just their focus glued to the bright lights of "the neon gods they made". The theme of a lack of direct communication with each other is consistent, but much worse than it was back when this was written.

I enjoyed the fact you kept going back and re-listening, because you caught so many little changes in his voice (on the first listen!) as the song progressed upwards.
It was also humorous that your introduction to David Draiman's vocal abilities was reversed......in that you heard the singing voice most of us DONT associate with his music first, then when the gritty metal rock sound we all have heard for decades started up, it was more of a shock to hear. Most Disturbed fans were more shocked by the first 2/3 of the song, then the finale took us back to what WE were familiar with!
