I heard this for the first time while driving for a business trip. I pulled over and hit "repeat" again and again until I thought I could drive without being distracted. I got to my hotel, plugged in my laptop and immediately looked it up, only to find this freakin' masterpiece. I watched it repeatedly and then started bingeing reaction videos to it, watching others see it for the first time and be blown away, too. That was a few years back and I don't think I could count how many of those billion views are mine, alone. So watching it with you and being a community theater girlie who loves being in the light booth almost as much as I do being on stage, was a real treat. I'm also an amateur photographer, but usually no one wants to play, 'Let's take pseudo-artsy photos with Mel,' so the lighting is always pretty pedestrian. I love how you interpreted the different ways the lighting on David's face, in particular, made you feel and how it made sense with the lyrics and the composition of the music. I do love this video ... and after all these years, it still gives me all the feels when I see it. It was fun to pick it apart technically, though! Cool perspective!
Some songs really hit you that way! The depth of the way he sings it, with so much emotion, is just unbelievable, and the video really adds to it! Really glad you liked this. I know what you mean with photography and going out to shoot stuff- you need to find a buddy with similar interests! That's how most of my initial projects came about. ^_^ Thanks so much for watching!
My great grandson introduced me to disturbed. I'm 76 years old and heard S & G perform this, in concert, in the late 60's. I was completely blown away. I've also seen him perform this on Conan several years ago and was, again, just blown away.
I was a teen when this song was released. The combination of the gorgeous melody and the intensity and seriousness of the lyrics drew me in immediately and I couldn’t get enough of it. One of my all time faves. I heard this version when I was driving in my car and had to pullover to listen. The emotions it caused were immense. I have since listened to it many, many, many times and I cry every damn time. The entire thing - the visuals, the instrumentation, the structure, and of course, David’s heartbreaking and utterly gorgeous voice - are absolutely brilliant.
I was 21 when it came out and because I'm more than a bit anal, I still have the album. I stumbled across the video on RUclips a while back and by the end I was sobbing. I still choke up every time I hear it. Somehow this cover taps into 60 years of emotions I had no idea were there. Only Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt brings out such emotions.
Another detail I love is that David opens his eyes and looks into the camera for the first time when he sings "And the VISION that was planted in my brain..." 👁👁 Great analysis Manon. Thank you. ❤
I don't see it as "crossing the river Styx;" I see it as those with the sheet music will finally be heard with the addition of the orchestra in the boat. Otherwise, without both, no one would "disturb the sound of silence." Good review and analysis. New here, by the way. A very different approach to videos, not just someone commenting on the singer(s), music or simple comments on a video.
Lovely analysis - it really adds to my appreciation of the video, particularly lighting David! One note: in the shot of the people standing waiting with their music in hand (discussed from 18:49 in your video), the faces are clearer in the upright image, but the music is clearer in the reflection. It's definitely intentional, but I'm not sure what it signifies. Anyway, hope the trip is going well!
Thanks so much John, I appreciate it! And good catch about the music being clearer in the reflection, again such a beautiful, small detail. Maybe it signifies that we take music with us to the other side? Or how, perhaps, symbolic and important music is also around the event of death? Perhaps how music is carried across generations? I agree with you it really does feel intentional!
The video really gives that haunted feeling that also comes from the song. Seen it several times, and I'm still impressed with the way they tell the story. Learned a lot about lighting from your analysis today, thanks!
The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel is sad resignation. A plea. The Sound of Silence by Disturbed is Dammit, LISTEN! *** The Warning *** "And the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made." ~ Paul Simon "And the people bowed and prayed, to the golden calf they made." ~ Old Testament
I have an idea for something a little more cheerful. Some years ago, a band called OK go (not metal) made some insanly creative one-take music videos. Have a look at "The writing's on the wall", "Needing/Getting" or "The One moment". The first is very creative about perspectives, the second one the singer needed to learn how to ralley drive a car, an the last one is a 4.2 second video that when slowed down becomes almost the whole music video.
Hello, *Manon de Reeper* Ever thought about reacting to an all female band that dresses up in maid outfits? Well there is this band out of Japan called *BAND-MAID* and I really think you might enjoy their music cause I really do. Do you mind reacting to their song *YOLO (Official Music Video)* because you only live you get it.... Well I wish you all the best on your channel and hope to see a *BAND-MAID* reaction in the near future. 😊 _The Carrier Pigeons delivering the message of _*_BAND-MAID_*_ to the World_
Hi! If you have any suggestions for any Band-Maid videos that have a story to them? The ones I saw are just the band performing or live performances and I only react to music videos with a bit more meat to them. Let me know your suggestions, I am eager to add Band-Maid to my list because you're not the first one to suggest them :)
There are so many great videos from Maneskin - The loneliest, torna a casa, Le parole lontane, Moriro da re, vent anni, Gossip, made from real artists, check them out!
First time on your channel, and it's very interseting to put words and explanation on what we, with now video knowledge, feel looking at this. If I may, and if you didn't already did it, but I don't see it on your video list, I would love to have your analysis on videos from the singer Ren. Usually, people starts with the song who give him a sudden notoriety, called "Hi Ren" (nominated in Camerimage 2023 Music video award), and "Money Game Part 3" who won "Best Music Video" and "Best Director Music Video" in 2024 International Music Video Awards. And if you appreciate it, maybe after "The Tale of Jenny & Screech" (full version is 13mn). For information, his video clips are made live in one take (except for Money Game Part 3 for which they need to doo 1 cut). For "Hi Ren", I know they did it 4 times and choose the one they like the most and put it online. But I'm afraid the analyses of his videos ends with a one hour reaction.... so much things and little details everywhere to see... 😁
@@manondereeper Oh great, I bet this will be very interesting 😉 Can't wait ! (I already subscribed anyway and started to look at your others analysis, I'm on one of your Sabaton right now ;)
I was wondering if you have ever reacted to Dimash. If you haven’t you are missing out on so much talent. If you’re interested maybe your first song should be “S.O.S.”, 2021,Also he does a very strong video called “The Story of One Sky”, a message for humanity…there’s a lot in this video for you to go thru, it’s a 13 minute video. It’s a Masterpiece.Pope Francis gave him an award for this message, please check him out, thank you
Before you start liking this band, understand that they didn't write this song and further understand that they did write, "down with the sickness". That should be more than enough to change your mind. Really.
She does say she’s already seen them live. Not sure why you’d think that she wouldn’t like the band after “understanding” they wrote Down With the Sickness. Really.
What difference does it make if a singer wrote the song or not? It matters how the singer performs the song. I heard Simon & Garfunkel plus a whole bunch of other singers sing this song since it was written. They each had their own input to it. I never understood it until hearing Disturbed's version.

This January, Disturbed’s release the official black/white video of Don’t Tell Me featuring Ann Wilson of Heart. It’s stunning too!

Yes absolutely! It's truly haunting. Glad you enjoyed my breakdown, thanks for watching!
The boat has the instruments and the people on the land have the music.
First time I’ve noticed that
Thank you! Awesome. Luv from Australia 🎼❤️🎼❤️🎼❤️

I recommend listening to Geoff Castellucci doing Sound of Silence! Very different feel to both the original and Disturbed, but just as impressive.
