This 70 year old grew up with Simon and Garfunkel and I was incensed when I heard a heavy metal band did a cover. Then I listened to David...and knew I'd never really heard the song before. My heart stopped, my breath left me and I cried.
Me too. 70 in June and this took my breath away when I heard it. Someone said that Simon and Garfunkel gave a warning with the song and that this version is the rage that the world didn't listen. I can't remember exactly but that's the gist.
I have to tell you, I have heard this song probably 400 times since it came out. I have cried and been left with goosebumps to the point of shaking almost everytime. This song speaks to my soul; the frustration, the anger, the sadness/hopelessness at the words "Fools said I you do not know, silence like a cancer grows". Many of us said, when this was first released, the original was a prophetic, almost, warning nobody listened "People hearing without listening" Now, every time you bow your head to the cell phone/tablet/laptop remember these words "And the people boed and prayed, to the neon god THEY MADE"
Whats there to say? David Draiman just did one of the best live performances ever!!!!!! Absolutely amazing voice ---so clean and his pitch is unbelievable
I'm 41 and The Sound of Silence is one of the 5 greatest songs ever made and Disturbed version is the way this song is supposed to be sung. As much I love the original this version makes me do something the original never has: it makes me cry. You know it's music in its truest form when it touches your soul.
The thing I love the most about watching reaction videos for this song, is how almost everyone is like, "I HEARD this was good..." and then watching their faces when they actually hear it, because there are no words to describe just HOW good it is. Seeing the reactions never gets old.
And the fact that he was actually sick with the flu during this performance and was worried sick he’d blow it, pacing back and forth in the dressing room and came out and CRUSHED IT!!! 🤘
Goosebumps on top of goosebumps. So glad you watched the live Conan show as I think it’s a smidgen better than the video as you’re not distracted by the visuals , just listening to his powerful voice .
Probably one of the best reactions I've seen. I did chuckle a bit when you stopped it early. I thought "You ain't seen nothin' yet" The facial expressions and stunned silence at the end say it all. Thank you !

I’m obsessed with this version of this classic and gets goosebumps every time I hear it, which is easily over 100 times. Have watched tons of reaction videos for this version and your reaction is my favorite. Blew my mind the first time I heard it and it still does!
20 years ago when my son was 16 years old he played Disturbed for me. I made the remark that he had a wonderful voice and that he was going to be famous, my son said he already is. the cover of this song has maybe doubled David Draimans fanbase all by itself. I am a real fan. now you know why this cover has been seen over 700 million times!!!!!!
6:32 You were told this rendition was "pretty good?????". That's an odd way to describe utter brilliance. This is the best cover I've heard of ANY song by ANY band ever. Yeah, pretty good.
This is the abnormal for them. They're a Nu-Metal band, then did this cover, and like you, everyone went, HOLY SHIT!! David Draimon, the lead singer, is classically trained. It's how he can "Fry" his voice (the Growl/Scream) and not damage his chords, its VERY hard to do. And you're right, deep tenor, to approaching alto. He has an amazing voice and range.
The best cover of any song ever and the BEST performance of a song EVER! I cry from deep down inside every time listened to it (all the time). A story told like no other 🙏🏻
I am brought to tears each & every time I hear this version. I adore the original also, by Simon & Garfunkel, I grew up listening to them. But this version by Disturbed is UNBELIEVABLE 👏🏼❤️
David surprised his own self with this Cover. He said, when he had finished the recording of it, he sat in the booth by himself for three hours, listening to it...!
That's a new little story about this song that I've never heard before, wonder if it's true, probably, I think I listened to it for three hours after the first time I heard it too! thanks for sharing!
This is one of the best covers of this song and nothing against Paul and Art but this probably beats it, and the power behind his voice is unheard of honestly! It changes the dynamics of this song so much! Considering it’s about the “sound” of silence.
I have heard this version about 8 times now, and each time it blows me away. It makes me want to say "Simon and Garfunkel, who are they?" Needless to say that I love Simon and Garfunkel songs but with this particular song of theirs, I'm afraid that David Draiman's Disturbed have got them beat, I could never listen to the S & G version again without hearing Disturbed. Disturbed get 2000 out of 10 from me for their rendition of this song.
This preformance NEVER ceases to touch my soul. You're reaction, the continual suprise and the obvious pure astonishment couldn't be more appropriate. You FEEL this music/song just as much as you hear it.
David Draiman is a Classically trained opera singer as well as a Cantor. Paul Simon, who wrote the original, and sang it with Garfunkel back in the 60's, sent Draiman a letter complimenting him on this cover. Think about that for a minute.
No he is not classically trained opera singer and his Grandfather was the cantor, not him. There is a live interview with him on Wikipedia Fact or Fiction that he talks about what is true and not true. He was a hospital administrator while trying to make Disturbed known.
No.....Mr Draiman was Professionally trained as a Cantor at his Temple. Not classical training or Opera......it is unique. I used to think what you said was true...until a Jewish buddy of mine explained the difference to me.

You Know What No One Has Spoke About The SOS....Help...!!! Loved Yr Video So Did He 😂😂!
I grew up with the original playing a lot thanks to my parents, who *actually* grew up with it, and I love the original, but it never moved me like this one does. This version is on a whole other plane of existence. It's so powerful. I could hear it a million times and it would still touch my soul. I feel it in my chest and I cry every time I hear it. David is so awesomely talented it makes my head spin. Unfortunately, my dad refuses to entertain that this version is even equal to the original, much less that it might even outshine the original. Stubborn, stubborn man.
The "devilish" voice was the sound of DEFIANCE against the sound of silence, and the cold, empty neon lights, and the fucking loneliness. That moment he used the METAL VOICE to express anger & defiance was astonishing and absolutely top of the peak. THAT metal voice brought LIFE into the dead of the night. It was the rolling rage that metal music delivers like no other. I like metal, cause it expresses, (rather than impresses), and it really relieves from tension in the end.
I've never been a fan of Metal in general, too old but I do have a fanatical appreciation for good singing and quality performance. My 4 kids, from 28 to 48 always keep me on the straight and narrow path. You nailed it with your comment thank you.
I agree. I love watching these reaction videos. When he goes to that super low vocal it just gives me chills every time I hear it and I have listened to this many times! Check out Pentatonix version. It is also one of my favorites!!!
How many times I've heard Disturbed's version and STILL, i feel such strong emotion from it. I remember when S&G first put it out and how at that time, I thought, 'Awww .... how soft. So cutesy'. Fact is, I'm 71 now, a frustrated but published poet, and recorded singer who chucked it all away for a Marine Corps career. I've seen 2 consecutive years of war without let up. Death, destruction, pain and suffering coupled with the happiness of hope for a future of peace and tranquility were my constant companions. With this rendition, I can still feel the pain, the anger and frustration and indeed, the RAGE at a world that didn't listen. At least I also found that I can still cry and let out MY rage at a world so lost. Semper Fi, USMC Retired 1966-1989

Gobsmacked. no other way to describe. david is awesome. have listened to disturbed for years and this is not in their "norm" of hard metal. please check them out you will not be disappointed. loved your reaction, one of the best i have seen.
Your face was like mine when I first saw their video. I vaguely remember the original which was more a folk type song, but my mouth just fell open and all of the hairs on my arms stood up when I heard this. I never get sick of listening to this, and his voice is stunning. Who knew, I was never into Disturbed and had never heard of them before this.
I have the original by Simon and Garfunkel. I also have Disturbed on CD. The first time I watched this video, knowing it was Disturbed, I was thinking that they would destroy a song I loved and would say it. I listened to it and my reaction was not as extreme as the reviewer above, but pretty close. I also listened to it 3 times in a row and was more impressed every time I heard this song. I am more upset that David does not get to showcase that voice more while singing with Disturbed. What a waste of a voice.
@@robinpeterson2185 Disturbed generally does at least a cover per album.. it's an easy way to not have to write a song, get a song release, but almost all of them have been incredible, and complimentary but different to the source material. (They did a re-make of Shout that is great, and a remake of Lands of Confusion that is also great.)
I watched this video when it aired the first time and it became my favorite "new " version. No one can top the Simon and Garfunkel version but he changed the passion and in turn changed the song a lot.
I am 63 and was lucky enough to have met Paul Simon when I was young and he was so very nice. Having David bring it to a new generation to appreciate his music and do it oh so flawlessly is amazing. And thanks for your perfect reaction!!!
I cannot stop watching this. When I was a young girl my dad loved Simon and Garfunkel and he played their music all the time. I can't remember if he played them on cassette or eight track, but regardless, they were played all the time. As a young person I didn't like having to listen to them all the time. But, now as an adult, I am so thankful to my dad for introducing me to so many different types of music and genres the way he did. This cover is probably my favorite cover of any song. I wish my dad was still here so he could hear this version of one of his favorite songs. He would love this. Thank you for reacting to this. Sorry if I got too long winded 😊
great dad. same here, i grew up on Disturbed, but also while listening to my old man tunes. love both version. Paul Simon (Simon & Garfunkel) said to Disturbed, he totally love their version. Simon approved. 50 years apart, the Original Simon & Garfunkel delivered, Disturbed owned it.
Prime example, you never know what to expect from folks out there. What a gifted individual, and he's able to do this for us. Also I believe that you are spot on with what you say.
The singer, David Draimen was sick with a head cold at the time, and he didn't give his best performance, but it was still phenomenal. I'm not usually a big fan of covers, but I like this one better than the original. His voice coupled with Simon & Garfunkel's writing is a outstanding. I wish he would do more of their songs.
I love that you're casually taking a drink, David starts singing and your whole demeanor came to alert lol. Exactly like the first time I heard this and I was already familiar with Disturbed. His versatility and control are far and above par. His voice and presence is everything. Lterally the Man of My Dreams. 😍Great reaction here.
I played the flute for 8 years in the school concert band and watching the joy others get from hearing and seeing a powerful performance makes me want to play the flute again! I get the shivers and goosebumps every time I hear this song! Love the range of depth on David Draiman's voice, Disturbed's lead singer. Awesome!
I reckon ive watched close to all of the reaction videos to disturbed covering sound of silence, this is by far the best reaction video!!! Stopped once, didnt talk over it and just appreciated it. Killer 👌.
This song, it's so emotional and heart wrenching. This cover is the best I've ever heard, tears and chillbumps every single time! That rasp in his voice is called a fry. The way he does it and can still maintain tone and pitch is amazing.
He has an amazing voice, beautiful control and range. Watch the official video I gave me goosebumps and chills down my spine he’s really really really good. It was like I’m gonna look into your soul and sing to you this story
It lets all your emotions out of the jar. He was ill when he performed this too. I cry and get goosebumps every time - I'm almost addicted to hearing it.
I honestly can't get enough of this version of this song. Disturbed is amazing. It's so raw and cutting. He reaches into your soul and pulls out every emotion that is there. It's like he's taking you on a rollercoaster ride. Disturbed definitely has a new fan in me. Your reaction was spot on.
You noticed every change- a priceless reaction man. Heh this singer is a fascinating baritone who has sung for decades- his vocal control is nearly perfect and really shows. Anyway you really described his voice well.
It's cool when you look into David Draimans background. In his youth he trained to be a jewish cantor and when he was older he sought more classical training in order to be able to protect his voice. He took an already great voice and added skill and precision.
Darren Yee dude it really is perfect. Nearly. Or just perfect. He has the most control over many seasoned singers... Yup, his control is basically orgasmic lol seriously
Gobsmacked is a good description. This came up on my suggested for you videos. My reaction: "Man, I bet this sucks". But I hit play. Like you, I sat there with my jaw on the floor. The way he sings the last verse still gives me chills to this day. Without a doubt, one of the best covers I've ever heard.
Holy shit! I haven't heard him for a while, and even though his voice is well known to be extraordinary, in his usual performances, there's a lot more of that raspy growl he uses to such amazing effect, so the clarity and all round extraordinary beauty of his vocals isn't as clear, or it wasn't to me. This blew my mind. Wow! What's incredible, as well, is that in all his years of performing loudly with all that rasp, his voice is still so beautiful. He either discovered some secret, or has a hell of a voice coach. Loved your reaction, PW - pretty much the same as mine, and I have heard him quite a bit, though not for a couple of years. Wild!
I love this version of the song so much, that if it comes to it i want it played at my funeral. It's just phenomenal. David and his band have achieved something divine in my opinion.

I heard that Paul Simon heard it and was pleased by the innovation bringing the song to a new generation.

There is actually a tiny bit of autotuning in this version. David Draiman was furious when he found out.

David shows you the difference between a person who sings and a person who is born with raw natural talent
I am 63 and was lucky enough to have met Paul Simon when I was young and he was so very nice. Having David bring it to a new generation to appreciate his music and do it oh so flawlessly is amazing. And thanks for your perfect reaction!!!
Wow. The first time that I heard about Disturbed, it was because they did the music on one of the Dragonball Z movies.(Thanks Toonami !)
50 years apart, the Original Simon & Garfunkel delivered, Disturbed owned it.
i wish your dad was here to listen to it with you. xo
Probably an album or 45
Prime example, you never know what to expect from folks out there. What a gifted individual, and he's able to do this for us. Also I believe that you are spot on with what you say.
my favorite reaction to this beautiful song, i absolutely love David, he is so talented and God bless him.,
His voice makes me cry, it's so pure, I love it.....
I get goosebumps every time I hear this song ☺️
This version always brings tears to my eyes. So beautiful.
Even my hairs gave a standing elevation to this version... and they won’t sit down!
Great honest reaction . Kudos .
The first time I heard this I realized that I was hearing something special. Speechless !
You witnessed PERFECTION!!!!
I played the flute for 8 years in the school concert band and watching the joy others get from hearing and seeing a powerful performance makes me want to play the flute again! I get the shivers and goosebumps every time I hear this song! Love the range of depth on David Draiman's voice, Disturbed's lead singer. Awesome!
Best. Cover. Ever.
I reckon ive watched close to all of the reaction videos to disturbed covering sound of silence, this is by far the best reaction video!!! Stopped once, didnt talk over it and just appreciated it. Killer 👌.
Subscribed because of your reaction to this song
This song, it's so emotional and heart wrenching. This cover is the best I've ever heard, tears and chillbumps every single time! That rasp in his voice is called a fry. The way he does it and can still maintain tone and pitch is amazing.
When I first heard this guy, I Had To hear Again!!👍👍😀😀 I listen to this version soooooo Many times! Love it!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😁😁😀😀
Brings tears to my eyes every time. Ur reaction was phenomenal ❤️ David is a amazing singer who's range is unmatched in my opinion 🤗
I love seeing people’s reactions to the "people bowed and PRAAAAAYED" part.
Your reaction says it all. That’s exactly how I feel when I listen too it.!
Trying to sing this cost me a lot of money in vocal lessons. Not for a moment going to claim to be anywhere near Draiman but can get that A4 now.
The instant change in you as soon as he started singing. Love it! This rendition gives me chills every time I hear it, no matter how often.
I truly LOVE the type of drums they use for this version! Perfect choice!
Wild!
Probably my favorite reaction. Goosebumps. Best cover ever. I think I like it better than the original version that I grew up with.
I love this version of the song so much, that if it comes to it i want it played at my funeral. It's just phenomenal.
David and his band have achieved something divine in my opinion.
This is not typical for disturbed but it really shows a truly talented man who gives you a soul experience that hopefully each of us heed...
David draiman has the most amazing voice his range is truly unbelievable
By far, BEST FACIAL EXPRESSIONS EVER!!!!!! This is how a reaction should be. You didn’t even need to talk, your face said everything
