I heard that cast and crew who work behind the scenes on Conan all came out to watch this as soon as they heard the singer’s voice. Conan had never seen that done before. Everyone was paying attention and not talking. That was powerful.
David Draiman did for Sound of Silence what Johnny Cash did for Hurt... gave those beautiful songs the true voice that was meant for them. The originals were good, but their versions are masterpieces. Not only a delight for the ears, but also perfect vehicles for deep and meaningful lyrics.
Bone chilling and incredible ❤ Paul Simon said his version was a warning of what might be to come and Disturbed’s version is a reaction to no one heeding that warning. . Apparently staff behind the scenes on Conan came running half way through wondering what the hell they were hearing. Amazing 😊
Nope. Popular misconception that many have heard. It was actually much worse- he had a bleeding lesion on a vocal cord for which he later underwent surgery. He speaks of this in many interviews.
Dave's vocal range is quite impressive. That jump from the low tenor/baritone up to the tenor is sublime... 😘 His intonation when he sings "Hear my words that I might teach you. Take my arms that I might reach you" with the "you" that sounds like "yewwwww" and the last "...whisperrrr in the sound of silence..." those "ooo" and his rhotic "rrrr" so forward in his mouth gives it such a extra fierce feel 😡 p.s: the big drums? They're called timpani drums.
FYI those are Kettledrums and yes they add soo much. They are a staple with in any symphony orchestra's referred to as a Timpani. One of my favorite percussion instruments of a orchestra. The depth and gravitas that they add to any musical piece really can't be replicated by any other instrument with in the the orchestra. When they are playing you will all ways feel and hear them no matter how many other instruments are playing at the time.
I love this version by Disturbed. I also love their songs "Hold On To The Memories", "The Light", "Indestructible" and "A Reason To Fight". Lots more great songs besides these.

I was cleaning house one day with some sort of internet rock station on and Disturbed The Sound of Silence came on. I'd never heard of the group, never heard anyone but Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel do it. I grew up in the 60's hearing and loving them. Disturbed's version floored me. I've heard it dozens and dozens of times and still get chills and tears, every single time. Thank you for your reaction, I really enjoyed it. I'll go check out your other reactions.
David on his worst day with the flu will always be 1000x better than anyone else on their best day. Yes he is classically trained. With his range, fry and training as a cantor, he is among THE most talented voices I've ever or will ever hear. 💯
Between goosebumps, tears and I need to shave! lol you got this one right! I LOVE DAVID and his take on life, ….for him to choose this song of all is OUTSTANDING!!! I grew up with Simon & Garfunkel (folk music) I call it , to have my Favorite metals band to do this song says something about being 💋s “Disturbed” this band/ARTISTS THROW DOWN! Been to many Live concerts at ten of them DO NOT MISS SEEING THEM!! Total AHH AHH!
Great reaction!! I have read that David was hospitalized the night before due to illness hence reason why he’s sitting on chair entire performance. He has a beautiful voice and the entire band did an amazing job.
@@nickforell1 what was actually wrong was a bleeding lesion on a vocal cord for which he later had surgery. He speaks of this in many interviews. This could have compromised his performance a lot more than any virus.
THIS version, is THE BEST I have ever heard! It is best when its just like this performance as far as live and in person with the vocals and tone David has in THIS version. Just awesome!
David had 102 temperature and was asked if he wanted to cancel and he said no and then he was weak so they gave him a stool to sit down on. This man’s sang very sick and pulled off a beautiful masterpiece. Paul Simon even commented on, how beautiful he did the job.
@@mamaalaskanope. David did an interview with the RUclips channel The Charismatic Voice. He talks about the performance on Conan. And he very clearly says he had a lesion on his left vocal cord. You can go to her channel and watch the interview yourself.
So glad you finally watched this one! This is such a truly rare find. A live version of a cover that is better then the original. No shade to S&G their song is incredible, but David's vocals just elevate this to a new level
The drum is called a Timpani, also called a kettledrum. It typically has a foot pedal that allows the drummer to change the pitch of the sound. Basically tuning the drum note by note.
OMG, the tissues I've 🤧 gone through since I discovered David Draiman and Disturbed performing their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" on April 29, 2024. That day I have to believe my spirit 🙏 guides (out of the blue) first led me to a cover video by Dan Vasc singing "Amazing Grace" which was phenomenal 👏 and then to the cover video of Disturbed and David Draiman singing this most POWERFUL, EMOTIONAL 😂rendition of Simon and Garfunkels "The Sound of Silence". I'm 75 and was 15 when they released one of the most popular classic songs of our time during the 60's. It is amazing how relevant it is today. Actually I feel it is even more relevant than ever in so many different ways. I've spent days since listening and seeing, you notice I didn't say viewing, the many channel hosts and each of their reactions and have 😢 almost every time. It's funny that more males have gotten teary-eyed than females, just an observation. Thanks from Diane
I first heard the studio version of this about 2 years ago, and it brought so much emotion to the song that I never got from the original...then I heard the live version and was just blown away. I really enjoy watching the reaction of others to Disturbed's version and hearing them have the same (,mostly) reaction I did. Epic just does not cover it. I am 79 years old and have probably listened to both versions 300 times....and counting.
I absolutely love your reaction to this!! The first time I listened to this I cried, which I was not expecting....I just felt overwhelmed with emotion. Love watching your reactions x
Hi Nick! Great reaction. I've listened to this song many many times over and it brings tears to my eyes every time. Love this version and I don't think it will ever be matched again. Have a great day!
Hi, I subscribed to your channel today. One reason I watch your videos because you are not afraid to show your emotions. I love this song it brings out my every deep feeling and many tears. Thank you 😊 🙏 💓
I have watched so many reactions to this song, and I feel like yours. Best describes how he sang this song, and how he is trying to teach us more about this song that I have ever heard before.
Disturbed version is better then oryginal, period. Can't help it, but that is what i feel. David's progression through the song is so meaningful for the lyric. Love it.
I absolutely love this. I lived the 60s and know the original. This is an explosion❤ of sound that goes straight to one's core. David Draiman speaks to my soul. And the instruments undergird him in such a powerful and passionate way that he can give it his all. The drums are timpani drums. David matches the drive and volume they bring to the crescendo. Thanks for this.❤😊
That would have been the most awesome show to see on a small set. Yes the tympanic drums added to the beautiful tone David set to the song. Such a dynamic performer- his presentation of it was so timely and honest❤
David wasn’t sick. He had a lesion on his left vocal cord. The Charismatic Voice did an interview with him and he speaks about his performance on Conan and about his lesion. I don’t know where or how the rumor that he was sick got started. And I’m amazed by the people who even throw in a fever. The Charismatic Voice is a RUclips channel. It’s a really well done interview. Thanks for feeling this song instead of just reacting. I had to listen to it about 10 times before I could get through it without crying.
Those are timpani drums or kettle drums. They are a huge part of the drama of this song. Love those drums in it!!! Orchestra also amazing. David is powerful!!! My favorite song now ever.
Almost every comment you made was exactly what I was feeling.. His voice is soft and strong and harsh and growling all in one... And the soft to medium to loud to angry creshendo is awesome...
I have always enjoyed Simon and Garfunkel. This version by Disturbed is excellent. When I first listened to this, I was totally blown away. I've watched it numerous times since. There is however one other version of this song that you really should check out. Geoff Castellucci has recently done another version of this song. It's totally different than either Garfunkel or Disturbed and well worth watching.
Like you I have listened to both versions sooo many times. I think the official music video gives the recording huge depth and meaning and then when you watch this live version - well it just makes me cry every single time. Such amazing vocals with deep poignancy and feeling. Love it. Thank you.
if you were ever going to go see a show, that would have been the one to see dude, total awesome. I've seen this 50 times or more, it's just so good, it never gets old
This version was my very first experience with Disturbed's cover of this song and I definitely felt the goosebumps too! If you want to check out yet another cover of the Sound of Silence, Pentatonix has done one as well. I would say theirs falls more in line with Disturbed's take than with the original by Simon & Garfunkel. It's pretty impressive too! If you do choose to react to it, just be sure to do all the things to avoid copyright issues since their record label stays on top of that with reactors. On a side note, don't ever apologize for pausing a video Nick. You are a reactor and as such, that is to be expected. If people want to watch the video uninterrupted, they need to go watch the original and let you and other reactors actually react.
Great reaction. The look on your face is exactly how i felt the first time i heard this. Gut punched. I grew up hearing the original. Simon Garfunkel came at it from a folk version whereas Disturbed approached it more from an angry standpoint. So impactful.
This is by far the best cover I've ever heard done. But if you can believe it, there's a version of this that goes to another level. David does this song as a duet with Myles Kennedy (from Alter Bridge) and it's incredible.
The original song was the warning. This version was the anger that humans didn’t heed the warning. Pail Simon reaching out to David Draiman with his approval of the cover. Amazing.....
Hi Nick love watching you react to both versions you have watched. I love them nothing as well. You should check out the live concert version of David singing this song with Miles Kennedy. Amazing❤
Hey bro!!! I got You. This is not just a cover. This is a tribute. And David is doing this with passion and respect. Love this. Thanks. Greettings from Argentina. Sorry for my English
Completely agree about the studio video's choices of graphic images. From the opening silence and then the burning keyboard to the ark at the end.....inspired genius. This is a performance we can go back to time and again because it is live and so perfectly done. Goosebumps for sure. Now I am going to make a plug for Phil Collins. His performance of 'In the Air Tonight' live is equal to this in my humble opinion and one you can hear over and over and still be blown away. Everything about it is perfect from the staging and lighting to the sound quality. Perfection.
I was privileged to tune into Conan this night. Had never heard of Disturbed, but instantly fell in love! Have since listened to most of their music and my appreciation has only grown exponentially. I do think that the video lends much to their interpretation of Simon’s lyrics in that it has a very positive ending with the music coming together with the lyrics. Thanks for your beautiful reaction.
I saw this performance as it was shown on the Conan show, having never heard this cover, and not knowing anything about Disturbed. I was just stunned. Now that I've had the chance to watch both this and the official video version a bazillion times, I always recommend that people watch the video first to get the full visual experience and listen to the perfect vocal performance that they got on tape. But then I always insist they come listen to this live one, because to me, it is more intense, more passionate, and even more beautiful than the studio version. Less technically perfect, but somehow better and more vibrant for the imperfections.
Loved it! I think I prefer this version just for texture of David’s voice. The video hit differently because of the visuals but is beautiful in its own right.
kettle drums... We had a 45 of the original. I saw lyrics by age 11-12 and totally got them. Paul Simon is among a handful of great folk/pop/rock songwriters. When Bridge over troubled Waters and The Boxer are on same album, he's super at the craft. The Conan show orchestration was equal to David Draiman vocals. piano and kettles as a spin on old Spinal Tap joke, takes the cover to an 11. Even maybe better than Jimi Hendrix cover of All Along the Watchtower...
The video version is almost a nihilistic brutalist thing, this live version hits chill inducing visions of 1984.... A complete masterpiece that is a diametric opposite of the original. Great reaction as always 👍
That was one of my initial thoughts. The privilege of being in that audience, the surprise and gut punched feeling afterwards. One of those few moments in life when you witness a live performance so captivating, enthralling and masterful, you will remember it for the rest of your life, knowing at the moment it was a masterpiece and feeling a tinge of sadness for those that will never have had that particular experience.
In HoustonTexas 2011 Myles Kennedy and Disturbed did a live version of The sound of you should listen to In in Houston Texas Myles Kennedy and Disturbed did a cover of The Sound of Silence
I, too have watched this performance many times. It's all great but the two moments that sealed it for me were "songs" @4:49 and "Sounds" @7:42. as a 50+ year old I was not a Listener of Disturbed before this. now I am.
I've listened to a lot of reviews on this particular song and the interesting thing to me is how everybody hears his voice and the music and the instruments and all of that I have yet to hear anybody talk about the meaning of the song and how important it is to back to feeling or relating to each other as human beings because that's really what the song is about.
Never heard of Disturbed but love the performance of this song. For a gritty voice check out Slade, Noddy Holder with one of best voices in rock according to Ozzy Osbourne 17 consecutive top 20 hits with 6 No.1’s, three of which went straight in. Cum on feel the Noize, Mama we’er all Crazee now or the slower My oh My are good choices
Good you got to see both. I love seeing and hearing David in the Conan version. He is just so good. The other version is excellent too, but in a slightly different way because if the visuals I think bith versions are excellent. .
One really good song by Disturbed not played on radio is "Who taught you how to hate" love this song along with many other songs from them. Disturbed is my second favorite band next to Godsmack.
Great reaction! There are 2 more fantastic versions of this song out there. One is at a Disturbed concert where Myles Kennedy does the second “Garfunkel” voice. Absolutely epic. And the second is Dan Vasc performing this version as well. I understand that you might not want to keep reacting to this version, but at least enjoy it privately as I know you will appreciate them.
I’ve heard the Simon and Garfunkel version described as a warning for the future and the Disturbed version (especially this live performance) as the rage at the warning unheeded.
If you dont get chills from this song, you are not breathing.
I heard that cast and crew who work behind the scenes on Conan all came out to watch this as soon as they heard the singer’s voice. Conan had never seen that done before. Everyone was paying attention and not talking. That was powerful.
He was breeding the flu that night so they used auto tune…because they thought his voice might crack …not one bit necessary
One reactor mentioned "look at his eyes." David really understood what he was signing and clearly meant it.
Timpani or kettledrums (also informally called timps) are musical instruments in the percussion family.
David Draiman did for Sound of Silence what Johnny Cash did for Hurt... gave those beautiful songs the true voice that was meant for them. The originals were good, but their versions are masterpieces. Not only a delight for the ears, but also perfect vehicles for deep and meaningful lyrics.

Simon n Garfunkal whispered this in 1960s few listened now it's being SCREAMED at us PLEASE LISTEN love peace n Respect to S & G xxx
His lead guitarist was playing the piano for this performance. His drummer was playing the Timpani or more commonly known as Kettledrums.
He is a trained cantor ,his range is magnificent x
He was coming off of the flu and he said he could not turn down this live performance it must be done David nailed it
Nope. Popular misconception that many have heard. It was actually much worse- he had a bleeding lesion on a vocal cord for which he later underwent surgery. He speaks of this in many interviews.

Less technically perfect, but somehow better and more vibrant for the imperfections.
the power of music ... it is universal
Loved it! I think I prefer this version just for texture of David’s voice. The video hit differently because of the visuals but is beautiful in its own right.
Die Stimme streichelt den ganzen Körper, Gänsehaut pur ❤
Live version is the best... Such pure capture of the words and emotion of this song...
kettle drums...
As I recall, the live performance was the one that Paul SImon commented on.
His sound is so pure and resonates all through the body! Tympani...
For a gritty voice check out Slade, Noddy Holder with one of best voices in rock according to Ozzy Osbourne
17 consecutive top 20 hits with 6 No.1’s, three of which went straight in.
Shinedown's cover of "Simple Man" is right up there!
I saw Dan Vasc's cover yesterday and it blew me away.
This is a gift that keeps on giving every time it's listened to . A true gift to us all !
I’ve heard the Simon and Garfunkel version described as a warning for the future and the Disturbed version (especially this live performance) as the rage at the warning unheeded.
