I'd never find anything as helpful as this video to be boring. What i must say is: "Thank You!"
Glad to hear that Mike, thank you! :)
Very wise of you to just say, "Here's my first aid stuff. Now go learn about it from someone more qualified than I." Respect.
I know Im quite off topic but does anybody know a good website to stream new tv shows online ?
Thanks Bud! Keep in mind that some of us are not advanced adventurer so every bit of advise is appreciated. Bottom line these contents are great. Looking forward to some fishing tutorials as well. Stay safe
Thanks a lot BQ! That's all I'm hoping here...that a small audience finds them useful
Thanks for sharing Jon. Love the Sing-Along song list - thats a fun one :D
It's great fun until you paddle around a point and realize that no, you are not alone on the lake 😝 Sheepish minutes and hard paddling ensue
@@LostLakes lol
clothing bag, toilet tree bag, first aid kit.... I am guessing the calzone bag/kit is getting a video of its own?
Still a work in progress...likely going to have to be a multi-part series to cover even just the basics of calzonery
Thanks Jon for sharing.
Old meds expire. Pop fresh ones in at the beginning of each season. Nice to know that they are still good and at full strength when you need them most.
Oh that's great so many things u used that's. wow superb 😻
I find these very interesting keep them up.
not so boring sir appreciate any video you make, especially if the cat is involved :)
Not boring. Very informative.
Always interesting to see what gear people use. The Agawa Canyon and Gomboy should be in every trippers kit.
I got the Boreal 21 *specifically* after watching Jon & Erin as well as Joe Robinet torture testing them clearing portages and processing firewood. Got it for Christmas and it's literally the best bush saw I've ever owned, far and above! 💕 I've been a skeptic of Silkie saws because I'm not a fan of that wrist orientation, but after watching this video and considering the pocketability, I'm rethinking my position!
I got some bad gut infection once and had to go on iv at the hospital after. Based on my treatment I now carry in my first aid kit:
- potassium supplement
- anti-diarrhea (prevents severe dehydration)
- standard "gravol" anti-nauseant
- ginger anti-nauseant (you can take them both at the same time)
I could not eat at all without both anti-nauseants for days.
Thanks for sharing. Super thorough. Love that you have song sheets. That’s awesome.
Can’t tell you how helpful this is. TFS!
Love these videos Jon. I have many of the same items. Happy tripping this year!
People like these kind of videos. Items that you pack and the way you pack them is great info for newbies . Great video!
just got back from a car camp and gear test of some new stuff. My sleeping pad killed, didn't sleep all weekend, those hammocks are looking better and better!
Brutal!! I'll tell ya, it's hard to go back once you get into a hammock
Not boring at all Jon, always love to look at kit and the what to and why to. Great to just hang out as we wait for the green light to go out and enjoy the outdoors again.
Great video ! I just realized that there are a lot of things I should add to my camping kit and can't wait to see the one on your fishing gear :)
Thanks BN! That one's coming up on the weekend :)
Great video!!! Love this series, you should repost all these info videos into one video so all your new followers can see!!
Very interesting and informative. I must admit I kept chuckling as the blanket on your chair so reminded me of chewbacca. 😛👍
Loving your Wookie fur chair cover. A Starwars collectible? Thanks for sharing.
As soon as you started going over your last minute checklist I knew fridge food would be in there haha. I think it’s a right of way for new trippers to drive 3+ hours at least a few times before realizing they left their cheese, sausage and cold water bottle in the fridge. Penaten and gold bond powder are a long-trip must for me too. Multiple wet days sitting in a canoe can lead to horrible chafing in some *ahem* uncomfortable places...
Would love to see a breakdown of your fishing lures. What you use to target various species in different water and seasons would be great.
Gram Counters sounds like a drug thing lol. Then you get into your T3s and your lighter and your rash schmear... Whatchu doing out there in the woods BOI?? PS, Tui is a sweet angel. Give him a kiss for me.
Digging the Wookie pelt on your chair.
Thanks Jon. I appreciate this very much. I’m excited about the coming season for you. It’ll be awesome.
BTW, I let my cat watch this video. He’s a Puma now. LOL ATB Mike
I'm all new to this outdoors life. Been out in the woods mostly cooking for fun & some fishing. Slowly starting to get some kind of a "starting kit" going for a 3+ day "hike in the wild". A video you talking about the mistakes you done and that "we" don't, would be interesting. All from packing too much stuff to tips & tricks to learn. Thanks for this video, I did really enjoy it, gave me some ideas!
Thanks AF! It takes a while to build a full kit for sure. One video in this series is stuff I *don't* bring :)
Not boring content Jon. Love this stuff. Keep it coming!!
Totally with you on the napkins. I pack several individual sheets of paper towel. They are folded and put in a ziplock bag. They definitely make meal cleanup/dishwashing easier and since they are paper they are conveniently disposed of in the fire to eliminate food smells.
Nice - thank you for this...I got that MEC bag because I saw it on your videos and I think Joes as well...I would love to see all your camera gear and how you pack it! Thanks for uploading!
Thanks George! Camera gear is coming up in a few days :)
Sweet map in the background!
See, this is why I like your channel. The ethos of not using much paper and again not over using the moss, it's the small things like this that if everyone did would make a difference. Antihistamine is the 'smarter' word you were looking for, I eat a lot of spinach, didn't know about the kidney stones though.
You looked so uncomfortable doing this, but you did a great job and I (at least) found it interesting.
Appreciate that Si! Glad to hear that...not my cup of tea but hoping it's useful to a small group
You’re very thorough from experience I’d imagine, this kinda reminds me of my own check list prepping for a Hurricane/season. I invested in solar lights this year ( to line your walkway) you can use them for power outages. 😌
Experience is the best teacher eh
So so good
Love that you have a dedicated packed bag and a quick pack list of what to add for a checklist. I am glad I am not the one who makes these crazy lists. Going to add going home munchies for the drive home to mine!
Couldn't go without Unscented Baby Wipes, the thicker variety. Best for everyone to have a half-dozen in a Ziploc bag on their person and the main container in the pack for refills and camp cleaning. Bonus bathroom luxury but also good for a quick cut, scrape and rash clean, cleaning dishes, hand wipe and sponge bath, wiping packs, canoes, etc. You can burn them after cooking or compost after bathroom. They do compost completely because I've tested them at my North property. Once you take them you'll never believe you left home without them, much like a SatCom. If you use them at home do not flush them, compost them.
Great to hear they compost, and good on you for checking!
Thanks Jon I was wondering about the tarp with bug net. Have a great day! CHEERS!
you're looking much more relaxed and healthier these days lately... :-D i am feeling crushed by Job and can hardly wait to Hitup the Bruce Trail system soon. CanaDave.
Thanks for the video Jon. Glad to see you you got the book we talked about a while ago. Also glad to see you adopted the hammock. I’m headed up into the BWCA later this month. It was an early ice out but I hope to hit the fishing just right. J
Hey John, I hadn't forgotten! Takes a while to make it to the top of the to-read list haha. Lovely book. Hope you had a terrific trip in BWCA!
Definitely take a trauma / advanced first aid course. I am fortunate to have close friends who are medical professionals who have taught me how and when to stitch a wound and given me knowledge of meds and their uses. I carry couple of different antibiotics, antiseptic, saline, antihistamines, epinephrine and a suture kit. With a few supplies and knowledge of how to properly use them can literally be a lifesaver. A deep cut in the bush can become dangerous fast. Without a proper meds infection can become debilitating or even life threatening. In my opinion the ability to properly close and care for a bad wound is just as important as a quality water filter.
Interesting to compare how we each prioritize our trip packing. Informative video. 👍
Interesting video Jon! I love that your cat is name Toothless!
Always nice to see what other campers drag around too.One item I do suggest is moist flush-able wipes. Great for spot body cleansing and preventing arse itch after the spicy calzone's, lol. One other item I leave in the vehicle is a toolbox/repair kit. Cheers!
Great video
Head net if heading out early in season ! Also latex gloves for meal prep. Cheers !
I use to have a cat like that I bet she’s Erins baby. Covid sucks hang in there buddy better times are coming.
Refreshingly honest advice about the first aid - but at the same time, it seems odd that you haven't had a course of some sort. Highly recommended! Still oh-so-jealous about the Dramur-kit!
Good stuff Job thx
Like it. Since it’s getting warmer and hopefully the backcountry ban is lifted on the 20th, this video is making me thinking about what I have to go through my gear. Supposed to be going into Algonquin May 21 lol we hope ;)
Hi Jon! Tom from indiana here, that steel pot is what I'm after. Good idea on the mesh bags also.Love the series and hope you and Erin are staying safe! Please pray for us down here in the U.S. it's getting worse by the day.
Don't you dare call yourself boring! That was great. It was fantastic because I had my master packing list open at the same time, and you have a few things in there that I didn't have, so much so that I'm going to go back and rewatch the video at some point just to make sure I have it all. Fantastic ideas, and I'm glad you shared them! 💕
In other news, my new hoodie, t-shirt, and sticker came in! My wife says I look hella cute in the navy/winter women's 2xl hoodie, and I totally agree. Thank you for my new go-to EDC hoodie! Can't wait to get out there and pimp the channel! 😂
Oh, and both the stained glass designs look EVEN BETTER in person!
ETA: when the package came I was telling my wife how excited I am to support the channel like this, and she was like "do they have a patreon?" IIRC you said you aren't going that route, but if you do ever choose to (or find yourself in need), we're here, Gondor ready to send aid to our Arnorian kin in the North. 😁💕
You should put your batteries in a non-metal tin. They could short out and leak. Also, the meds do have an expiry date so refresh them every year or 2. keep having fun and look forward to more content.
Dude. This, is soooo fucking good.
Hahah 😝😝
Hahahaha Thanks for doing all these helpful vids...Don't think I would use most of this gear here in NE Georgia hahaha.....But After watching Many of your Videos it's great to see the Break down and Why....Winning
Great video, even though you didn't want to make it! Always interesting to see and learn what others use outdoors. I know we all have our "thing" or "things" that we tend to cling to, but just curious if you have used a Grayl bottle/filter? Absolutely love mine and a buddy I camp with finally gave up on the bags, hoses, connections, waiting on gravity, etc. and got a Grayl as well. Drinkable water in about 15 seconds and it's a useable bottle/container as well. Just throwing it out there! Thanks again, loved all of these videos about the things you use. Paddle on and keep hanging from the trees!!!
...don't forget the anti bear ear plugs for a better sleep!....super glue also comes in handy as an emergency suture...just ask lol
The miss and I enjoy your videos! We love that you’re going in this direction, keep it up. Can’t wait to see how your editing evolves. But you gotta step it up in the editing. I know covid, bla bla bla but location and how your presenting these items can be a big difference. 👍
Thanks Jon for this one...as much as you maybe didn’t wanna do this one I found it very helpful..and just to know what you take. Kinda personal I know but it all matters when your away and out with what you have with you! Looks like bugs will be out before we get the green light to go. Darn covid. Thanks again Tim
I have that exact same trowl lol
You’re so lucky you don’t have to worry about ticks, it’s a big problem here in the south with the diseases they can carry, I actually contracted Rocky Mountain spotted tick fever when I was young and i was deathly ill.. And we have venomous snakes lol. One reason I purchased the Amok to get up off the ground away from the creepy crawlers haha.
Yikes!! That's a great point....another tally for team hammock on the scoreboard. Thankfully we barely have venomous creatures in Canada...the little dangers you can barely see are freaky
Ahg. I wish I would have known about the Amok last year when I bought a new camping hammock. Wish list.
Excellent video. I’m on a lost lakes marathon
Picked up a boreal 21 in February for my birthday and have been dying for these restrictions to end so I can (work again) but also get out and use it!!
Regarding your Check ✔ list, please remember to check it Three Times... It is a Shame to forget Boursin... 🧀... I am just teasing you ... Great video.. Have a great day from Elliot Lake.😘😃
Hahaha forgot the Boursin (and all of my fridge food) on one of my first vids...tragic! Thanks Michelle!
Might not be a bad idea to add some sort of Loperamide to your pill collection, while not pooping in the backcountry would be bad having the squirts for 3 days would be rough too.
Hahaha maybe even more worthy than the laxatives
Only thing missing is some heat ;) good video! Camping ban is brutal but I'm still getting out fishing!
Hi Jon, Love your work! Being brave enough to own being organised and principled is a beautiful thing. As an educator I am always on the lookout for channels that will support students in developing a positive and responsible approach to enjoying the challenge of enjoying the challenge; you provide that so effectively. So, thank you very much!
Also, I have been trying to find the stick stove you use. Can you please let me know it's brand or outlet it's available through?
Keep that content coming, please!
Thank you! I bought it from a small shop in Manitoba (Nomad XT Ti model):
www.canoepaddler.net/shop?page=2
So my question for you Jon is how do you find a way to pack that Chewbacca chair to bring with you? 😂
Damn it , I was going to say a similar comment , something like Why are you sitting on Chewbacca Jon ?
IT'S A BEAUTIFUL SHEEPSKIN OKAY 😂
Thanks for sharing this. Just a little FYI, almost all paper is made from farmed, fast growing cottonwood these days. No forest destruction involved. :)
why haven't we heard you sing on any of your canoe trip videos ? :) thanks for going through all your gear. appreciate all the insights.
Hahah when I sing, usually there are complaints 😅 Thanks Loi!
@@LostLakes Awww don't be so hard on yourself. I'm sure I can sing worse than you. :-)
I bring a pack of flushable baby wipes with the toilet paper. It does a much much better job than paper alone and you use a LOT less of it. Just be sure to get the flushable kind as they are essentially just wet thick paper towels and not synthetic. Also useful for hand cleaning, etc.
Picked up the Zoleo after your review....cheap emergency gear that I've over looked for sure..
I hear you on the paper products. I've been using toilet paper intended for RV's. Allegedly it decomposes faster than normal tp. Not sure if it's clever marketing but I figure it's worth the extra cost if it's true. Can't say I've gone back to investigate where I've used it in the past...!
LOL that's a tough one to follow-up on
Benedryl is the anti allergy meds! LOL
Awesome thank you. Jon check out the spices Cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves as a mix. Helps you sleep, pain relief etc etc, check them out. Each one is great in it's self but combined is Magic. I was sceptical but gave them a go. Ok I'm a tough nut but I was impressed. May not be good for trips but at home, Warm milk infused with these spices pretty jolly good to be honest. :) :) Hmmm soooo what songs do you sing in the canoe???
A small tube of flamazine is the best thing for burns (including touching hot rocks) especially in the summer when the water is not ice cold. This from personal experience. Works for chafing too but zincofax is much cheaper.
I see someone has already mentioned the anti-laxative. I carry a pack of extra strength "Fisherman's Friends" for cough, sore throat, stuffy nose and toothache. To waterproof maps, spray with Krylon clear acrylic coating. You've probably got about 4 kg of stuff sacks,. the Backpackers would cringe, but I define backpacking as a 20 km portage!!
Hahaha my thoughts exactly on backpacking. FF for toothache eh??
Contains menthol-eucalyptus.
For sure, very helpful, yes I do have a question, first, hate to admit this, but my brand new sleeping bag, a nice one rated down to -5 I have kept in the compression bag, and is now moved to the larger MEC bag, but never used and seems fine, fluffing back up no problem, a down bag.
Okay, the question, I bought a liner from MEC, but for summer I will use it with a wool blanket, lighter or heavier depending, what is your opinion on that?
cheers!
I have the slog HD 70l. Holds my whole kit and packraft. I do have to strap my pfd on the outside tho 🤷♂️
Dollorama now sells self inflating camping pillows that are pretty much the same as the MEC ones, and only cost $4
Any rumours how long this camping ban will be? This could be a very 'long' summer. Stay strong! Great vid!
What, what ban.
I haven't heard anything but my hopes aren't high...I highly doubt they'll let people camp on May long weekend due to the volume of traffic. Probably a repeat of last year's ban where they extend past May long, then start to permit it regionally in early June. That's my bet.
@Jeff 😝
The word you are looking for to name the allergy pills is antihistamines Jon. Some great gear and tips you have there! Napkins are a smart idea for cleaning, I never would have thought of that. Wildlands, is that a Canadian company? Sing songs in the canoe 🛶 I am sure you get a lot of inspiration on the water Mr. Brody 😉
Hahah thank you...could not summon it for the life of me. Wildlands is a partnership between an American and a Canadian, both lovely guys, exceptional service. Hahah I'm going to have to add him to my backcountry set list!
Great video, I’ve seen guys wrap duct tape around a card a few times to save space. Might try it, cheers
As Jon indicated he’s a “lighter guy”, wrapping duct tape around each lighter is very handy
It’s been awhile. For me anyway. Good stuff. Glad you’re doing well. Gotta play catch up on some of your past content. Be good.
The Snail
Good to hear from ya Snail!
♥
Hi John, Nice to compare your gear list with mine. I was wondering about the type of dehydrator you use for food on trips. I am planning to get one soon. Any advice? Thanks.
Hey Ron, we've got the Hamilton Beach 5-tray. Unless you want to shell out for Excalibur, I think it's a great value buy and I'm happy with it. Vid coming on that on Wednesday :)
I saw in one bag you keep a cat :)
Good informative video of things you take, i will take some things from watching this. Can never have to much experience.
Also just a quick question on the camping ban. Last year the ban in Ontario was just not allowed to have a open camp fire but wasn’t a ban on camping? Or am I wrong, I could see parks closing but being up north and the kind of trips you take could you still do your own thing and go out in the woods? I honestly have no idea but to ban you from going out on your own sounds crazy to me. Tell them your an essential camper sure haha
Camping ban last year was both camping and a fire ban as well. Concern is putting first responders in harm in case of an emergency, too many risk takers and uneducated morons out there. As well all the provincial parks were closed so the crowds in the back country would have been escalated.
I happen to be a wilderness first aid instructor. I would love to see you in one of my courses. Better yet, you and Erin both.
Where do you teach? I am looking for a course myself
@@canadiangirl8368 I live in Marathon, Ontario. I mostly teach in Marathon, but I have traveled as far as Timmins, Thunder Bay, and Geraldton to teach.
@@tedschintz3093 do you have a website with more information?
Great video! What was the make and model of the first “……10” tarp please? Also, I guess you are usually wearing wet hiking boots every day?
Thanks Chris! It's the Amok Skjold 10 tarp. Yessir, sopping wet usually with separate dry shoes once I get to camp for the day
I have the same tick remover as you. I think it's pretty much useless, though. Tried to remove a tick I got on the under arm. Couldn't do it by myself. A friend eventually got the body off. I think an old credit card, cut with a V in it, would work a lot better. Instructions on the internut.
you may want to check the expiration dates on the medications
Good call!
Hi! Do you use polarized sunglasses? As a fisherman i use them to see past the glare on the water and see structure on the bottom. Feels like a huge advantage to see rocks that you want to avoid when paddling.
Could be a good idea to recommend your viewers to try out.
Hope to see you on some nice fishing adventures soon.
Thanks for the great videos, you produce such good content.
Keep it up and all the best wishes from Sweden! :)
Yeah absolutely, that's funny because I was just planning to make that vid. It really is a big help for fishing and boating. Thanks so much eval!
Hi, just wondering, how long does it usually take you to set up/pack down camp? :)
Nice..🇲🇨
Was looking for a more specific nasal spray recommendation... 😂
i literally got out of bed to loft my bag...ive been so neglectful
LOL we're all guilty of it
great vid jon... where do you put your car keys, wallet, cellphone on a trip ???
Thanks Dave! For a short trip, usually just my day bag or camera bag, and for a long trip I stow it away in the book bag
I know this vid is older, and across 170 comments, someone likely answered the Eureka! bug room things... but in case they didnt, you are correct its now the No Fly Zone, and again you are correct that the bug mesh and tarp are all one unit now. No detachable bug room, sadly....
Yeah the modular system seemed perfect 🤷♂️
