    Enjoyed this one John. Spending some money on footwear is one of the things I recommend to people who are going to the backcountry.

      Definitely, go too cheap and pay the price. Wear terrible socks and pay the price too. Gotta walk comfortably and sleep comfortably at the very least, the rest can work itself out over a couple of days.

    The waterproof socks can be nice to use at camp if you only want to bring one pair of shoes in wet conditions or to make shoes more resistant to walking in snow.

    I'll be adopting your get the feet wet right away approach. I always new it was the pro move and I should have done it years back. Instead I fussed with different footwear options and combining them with waterproof socks. All failed me one way or another. I see the logic and I must embrace the sog foot blues.

      With some nice neoprene socks... your money. Its not nearly as bad once you commit and it feels great to not live in constant fear of the water you are surrounded by, or to deal with that creeping misery once you actually do get that unexpected but inevitable soaker.

      @@zenrhinno You know what Adrian I never tried the neoprene socks. Going to try that in a keen hiking boot. You see... I get cold feet so that's why I was trying all those other manner things to try and avoid the wet foot. Maybe neoprene is the answer!

  • @MTB_Rider_96

    I use ultralight Marino wool underlayers, head to toe. If I'm planning on rapids, and there's a good chance to flip, I always wear a full dry suite for colder conditions, or just a dry-top (with rubber wrist and neck gaskets) for warmer weather and water. When I get to my camp sites, I remove my dry suite and I'm completely dry even after flipping and rolling. FYI: Whitewater dry suite/tops are great for rainy conditions. For my feet, if I'm wearing my full dry suite with built-in feet/socks, I use neoprene boots (same ones I use for SCUBA). If it's too warm for a full dry suite, I have knee-high rubber boots with custom insoles. A 3 to 5 mil neoprene farmer John wet suite works well for warmer conditions. When I get to camp, I like to be dry.

    Very informative video. Me and my wife are going camping outside of the summer season for the first time this year and this video made me realize we still have a bit of apparel to buy. It doesn't get nearly as cold here as it does in Canada but it can still get below freezing in March--which is when we're going--if you're unlucky and it can be very rainy as well.
    So, yeah, thanks for the info!

    Just repaired my Original Bug Jacket with seam sealer. Take time, use painter's tape to line it up from the inside and apply to the outside. I let it dry a bit and just before dry work it with fingers to ensure perfect coverage. Can't hardly see the repairs which I like. Couldn't live without it in the NE Ontario bush! OMG bug and sun protection is key! It is all about the layers! I think they have some tent mess patch kits, so that might work for your bug shirt. Have you ever thought of a bug hat with the netting so the shirt part isn't necessary?

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  3 года назад

      Yeah I wear a standalone head net sometimes (and we do have one with the integrated hat), but the bugs still crawl into my shirt. So if the bugs are bad enough for me to want to wear either one, I'll usually just go all-in with the jacket

  • @vinceimp9581

    I clean pools and I repair my net with shoegoop or any other product like it. Tape on both side of the mesh or if you can find screen repair patches they should work and maybe look better too. If you want to wade through stuff above your knees, Chota makes those wading booties in a longer version that go up your thighs called 'Hippies'. They're invaluable in the BWCA where I camp. They can be a little warm, but typically that won't matter if you camp in the Spring or Fall. Plus, you can roll them up or down your leg to vent them. Just make sure to try them on with your boots, as you'll likely have to go up a size or two to fit comfortably. Also, they make for great rain pants!

    Do you have ticks on deer in your area?

      Actually we don't really have deer here. Moose country, and deer are rare, though with changing climate they're starting to creep in. But there are more deer toward Thunder Bay where there are more hardwoods and better habitat/forage for deer, and I'm pretty sure they have some ticks
