Woodturning: Sideways Hollowed Maple
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
- From an ambrosia maple log, I turn a medium-sized hollow form. The opening at the top is about 1 3/4" (44mm). The finish is Watco oil-base wiping varnish. During the hollowing, I use four or five different hollowing tools, including a ring tool, a hook tool, a Sorby Hollow Master, and others.

Ya know, normally I'm all pouty when you don't paint something... BUT this was already painted beautifully by nature. Oooo I love this bowl Rick! It's perfect. Thanks for sharing your creativity with me again. Stay safe, Vickie
Thank you for your comments, Vickie. I did consider doing some burning and coloring on this piece, but then I decided, as you point out, this wood was already figured beautifully.
That is my favorite hollow form to date. Beautiful grain, nice finish, stellar job.
Thank you, Rick.
Hi Rick, You do get the new shot first and are the gold standard of camera and video work. I love your sense of humor, too. Great work. Love this piece too. 😊❤️🪵
Thank you so much, Owl.
The tools in your shop had a workout this time. No problem justifying the purchases of the unique contraptions. That halo one looks like it came from a brain surgeon! No "Total Boat" finish for this one? The shine was incredible with the wipe on. Definitely a great choice. Another "easy" looking video that I know is not easy. Thanks for educating those of us who have much to learn.
Hi, Cathy. I’ll probably use the Total Boat varnish again, but I haven’t been tremendously impressed so far. It may be my fault - I think I might be putting it on too heavy. This is the best finish I’ve gotten from the Watco wiping varnish. This finish turned out much better than I expected. It was only three coats, sanded between each with 600 grit.
Watched your channel in the past but missed you of late. love the beautiful hollow form. great work.
Thanks for watching, Paul.
Gorgeous hollow form turning Rick.
Thank you, Jack.
Beautiful hollow form,well done :)
Thank you, Borge.
That's a beautiful bowl/container.
Thank you so much, Lucy.
Absolutely amazing time for me to buy some new tools
Thanks for watching, Fuzzy.
Wow! Just a beautiful project Rick!
Thanks for watching, MH.
That’s a beautiful hollow form. Well done Rick.
Thanks for watching, Doug.
Very beautiful hollow form Rick
Thank you, Steve.
Rick, EXCELLENT camera 📸 positioning, one of the BEST I’ve seen thus far. Really focused on gauge bevel placement, a great 👍 teaching tool for some of us that are still learning the skills of safe woodturning. Oh, and the hollow form bowl, quite a beautiful piece.
Just subscribed !
Thank you sharing 👏
Thanks for watching and for your comments, LP.
Really nice, Rick. Your camera shots are priceless. Take care.
Bill
Thank you so much, Bill.
Beautiful project Rick 😁👍🏼👏
Thank you, Japie.
Hi Rick, great video and stunning hollow form, I am working up the courage to do one of my own. Keep well, Rob
Thanks for watching, Rob.
Really pretty Rick! Nicely done!
Thank you, Dave.
Love the sun burst pattern on the side, your beauty shots are never long enough Rick, I could have admired that for longer!
Thanks for watching and commenting, Jude.
@@RickTurnsWoodturning oh hi Rick, great to be able to thank you for your entertaining videos. Yours was the very first channel I found when I learnt to use RUclips last year during our first UK lockdown. You truly helped me not go mad under the restrictions. I was already restricted due to ill health but to have the final two sources for socialising, my choral society and church, taken away was very hard. Your lovely, quirky somewhat barmy sense of humour has been a balm whilst appreciating your wonderfully imaginative skills on the lathe and recently with paint and burner too.
As you can guess I only just learnt how to like and comment aswell! So thank you and keep up the good work, stay safe, all the best.
Beautiful and elegant! Great job Rick 👌
@@judebrown4103 Rick is not only an excellent wood turner but also a good person that looks out for other small channel one way or the other by featuring our works and encouraging us to be reselient and to keep on turning. Hope to see you in my channel too 😊
Lovely piece Rick👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching, Alan.
Nice work Rick 👏👏👏👏
Thanks much, Douglas.
A very beautiful piece.
Thank you, Harry.
Very nice and the finish looks fantastic.
Thanks much, Joseph.
You T-shirts crack me up. I miss you chatting. The CC is great. I wo Der why there seems to always be a problem with items being slightly off when turning them around. I thought it was just me.
I’m not exactly sure why the piece is slightly off-center when reverse into the chuck. Probably due to some slight play in the jaws. I’ve always noticed that, and that’s why I never finish the exterior immediately after I turn it. The difference is pretty small, but I find it annoying and so turn it again. Thanks for watching, Suzette. (I love funny t-shirts)
Looks good Rick.
Thank you, JCW.
Very nice, Rick! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you, Valerie.
Beautiful turning and way so quiet
Thanks for watching, Dennis.
That is very nice Rick 👍🏽
Thank you, Habeeb.
Nice job rick thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching, Ian.
Nice piece Rick!
Thank you, Rockin’.
Well look at you! Not only can you turn things with color, patterns, graphics, grooves and gizmos, but you can turn an ordinary piece of wood into an extraordinary hollow form with a brilliant finish! Very nice looking piece, Rick! Great job! 😊
Edit: Oh yeah, how many times did you have to roll that log onto the bench before it stopped just right? LOL!
Phil
Hi, Phil. I auditioned a number of logs for the opening shot. Then when I gave the part to one log, it took at least six takes to get it just right. The life of a video creator is a hard one, as you know.
@@RickTurnsWoodturning Hahahaha, love your vids, Rick!
Hey, my two favourite wood turner's right here!
You're both amazingly talented and Phil although I love your happy little chuckle Rick beats you hands down for comedy 😂
Thanks to you both for keeping me (in)sane! 😀
@@RickTurnsWoodturning Ignore my recent comment about starting to watch your channel in lockdown. I've been watching you and Phil for some years but my poor damaged brain forgot. I expanded my watching from your wood turning channels to one's that would help me have company last year. I researched "e-bikes as a stealth mobility aide" and got me one that I wobble about on in the country lanes round here. Now I'm looking at ev's for the next car!
Thanks again chaps.
Hey, Rick, good to see you back ...
Thanks for watching, Donald.
Nice hollow vessel. I'm surprised that you don't have a hollowing system. Great work all the same Rick
Thank you, Paul. I’ve considered getting a hollowing system, but they’re a bit expensive and I don’t usually do hollo objects.
@@RickTurnsWoodturning Make your own. I did, with scraps I had around the shop. I'm sure you do to. I will try and get a picture of it. Right now it is buried under lumber for my new dog kennel{fence}. it will be a few weeks before I can get to it
snyggt jobbat Rick! 👍👀
Thank you, Lief.
You make me happy, when skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear
How much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away
(Okay, I don't actually love you, William, but I do appreciated you watching my videos)
Looks fantastic!
Thank you, Trurex.
Really pretty Rick...great finish...some of the interior shots looked like a colonoscopy gone bad😱🤣🤪...stay safe...press on 😎 Joe
Thank you, Joe. I had a proctologist standing in case there were complications from the interior work. 😉

Nice work, Rick - love the natural look!
Thank you, Stewart, and thanks for watching.
Nice hollow form Rick. I like the shine on this piece.
👍Frank.
Thank you, Frank. I’ve been trying out different finishes, and I think I’ve found one that I really like.
Nice work Rick, I think it's about time I invested in a swan neck hollowing tool. Take care, John
Thank you, John.
Beautiful piece Rick. Amazing job 👌👌
Thanks so much, Alvaro.
So beautiful!
So cool!
Thank you, Art.
You camera works are stunning. So nice closeups, you really do work whit these vids. Great piece, nice finnish. I love it👍

What a remarkably beautiful piece!
Thank you, Gail.
One of your best Rick! Keep up the great work
Thanks for watching and for your comments, EA.
Muito top parabéns 🇧🇷👍💯
Thank you!
Nice one Rick. Maybe a bit too shiny though, we can see your sheep-eating grin reflecting in the turntable shots. hehe. Stay safe. -Mike😷
LOL! Thanks for watching, Mike.
Beautiful looking bowl Rick! Always like the camera work you do. I like the finish so I think I will get some of the Ack's Polishing Paste that you use over the wipe on poly. I think I would prefer some commentary during the video rather than the silent videos that you now do but a silent Rick Turns video is better than no Rick Turns video at all.😊
Hi, Tom. The finish was more a result of the Watco wiping varnish than the polishing paste - it looked just as good before I put on the paste. I was hoping the paste would get rid of some of the dust bits that had settled on the bowl as it was drying. Didn’t really do that. Maybe I should have used the Ack’s abrasive paste first. So far, my plan to increase my view count by not talking and doing better videography has been a failure. I’m considering doing voice-over instead of closed captions - I think the captions might be a little distracting.
Gorgeous, Rick. Still makes me nervous thinking about deep hollowing through a small aperture. Have you thought about one of those laser guided systems? All the best. Ray
I have indeed thought about a hollowing rig with a laser guide - but those suckers cost $400 to $500. Maybe someday! Thanks for watching, Ray.
great!
Thank you, Rotti.
Beautiful job Rick! Really nice finish on that one, impressive chainsaw skills too 😂
Thank you, Ian.
Can't see last of video buddy..oh well I do like ambrosia maple
Thanks for watching, Todd.
Super 😀
Thank you, Fab.
Hi Rick... at the beginning...how many attempts did it take to get the log to roll the right way up ... Haha ...
Great looking hollow form... I would not have enjoyed hollowing that one .. so well done you...
Entertaining video as always...take care...All the best.....Andy
Hi, Andy. I auditioned six logs for that shot, and it still took multiple attempts for the log to get it right!
Wao good
Thank you, Hugo.
Great looking piece. I noticed your depth gauge. Very nice. Did you make it? I'm sure it reduces the number of pieces in the funnel club 🤣
Thank you, Chuck. Yes, I made that depth gauge some years back, but, no, I still cut thru the bottom of bowls with alarming frequency. Here’s a link to my video about making that gauge: ruclips.net/video/sZhrX2wCP4A/видео.html
I like the final form very much. I've never turned a piece where the pith deliberately goes through two sides...do you anticipate cracking from the pith?
I turned the sidewalls thin, hoping that would prevent cracking. I think it will be okay, but I wouldn’t have been surprised if it had split early on. Thanks for watching and commenting, Doug.
What chuck are you using? What type if jaws on them? Thank you for shaing.
That,s a
Record SC4 chuck with 75mm jaws. I usually put that in the video, but I forgot this time. Thanks for watching, Jon.
So it’s wipe on poly and then polishing paste? Do you decide on finishes based on what wood you’re turning?
I’ve been using different finishes, trying to find one I really like. My criteria are fast drying and high gloss. I may have found the right one now. Thanks for watching Lois.
What can I do, or make to keep stains and finishes from getting my new lathe dirty?🙂 thanks Rick!
Sorry it’s taken me so long to reply to your question, CJ. I don’t think there’s much you can do to keep the body of your lathe clean. You could try waxing it , I suppose. Probably the bestbthing you could do is to not apply finishes, stains, or dyes while the workpiece is still on the lathe.
Thank you Rick, I will put plastic on the bed ways, & on the paint places that might get spill on!😊
👍
Thanks for watching, Major
Do you think it would be possible to make a decent living with a 12" inch lathe not turning pens? If so how would you go about it it.
Hi, George. I’m flattered to be asked. I am amazed that anyone can make a living as a woodturner. I only know of a few professional woodturners. I used to try to sell my bowls - they were quite nice, but didn’t sell worth a damn, and of those that did, I had to split the sell 50/50 with the craft store. I think it would guide difficult make a living just turning small items. There are a number of videos on RUclips about pricing your woodturnings - they might give you insight into it.
Do you do commissions?
Thank you for that compliment, Teo. No, I don’t take commissions. (It’s too stressful.)
I liked it when you talked more.
I working on that - might try doing voice-overs. Thanks for the feedback!
Watching you sand the rim of the vessel with a glove on made me pucker…. Otherwise a nice piece
Thank you, Peter. I don’t see anything unsafe with the burning on the rim. But thanks for pointing it out.
@@RickTurnsWoodturning I never trust myself wearing a glove around a spinning piece especially in a hole. Maybe I’m too conservative.

LOL! (It was 14 minutes and six days). Thanks for watching, MWW.
I find the many camera angles gimmicky and less than instructive. I would appreciate more verbal description of decisions being made and what and why you are doing what is shown.
I like the different camera angles and the super-up-close shots - that’s what I look for in woodturning videos, and I’m emulating several channels videos that I really admire (such as David Adamsen). But then, that’s just me. I may start doing voice-overs in my videos, instead of closed captions. I think the captions may be distracting. Thanks for the feedback, Gary!
Nice piece Rick!
Thank you, Hodge.
