Woodturning :a bowl made from slices of wood 😳

- I am trying to make a bowl entirely made of slices of hazel wood.
After having sliced a good number of washers, I stack them, trying to cross the joints.
Once on the wood lathe, things get complicated, the wood is brittle and the gouges tend to bite ...
then by dint of vibrations the tenon ended up breaking I therefore decided to redo a more solid one in red wood.
In the end the experience is interesting and the result not too bad for a first ..
I think to start the same process again with some adjustments.
Thanks for watching my video and see you soon.

I'm an arborist in Ontario, we call slices like that 'cookies'. So to me, this is a cookie bowl! Love it

Thank you for your comment 👍😉
I'm glad you like this cookie bowl 😊
See you soon

Call them cookies in the south west of England too buddy 😊
And that's what it's all aboot!
Shout out from an Alabama climbing arborist! Cookies of all sizes haha
seeing failure helps me as a novice recognise solutions to failure. Thanks man. this helped a lot.
Thank you for your comment Anthony 😉👍
I wish you had shown it completely finished…..kind of left us all hanging to see the end result.
Hi Cynthia
It's a piece that I didn't finish because it was an experience...but I'll do it again and give it a finish 😉👍
It's different, I'll give you that.
That you got it turned with only one break is what amazed me. Great job.
Thomas Russell
Thank you so much for your comment :)
Morgan, you never cease to amaze me. Like it was mentioned before you do think outside the box and I’m still not over the vase in the cube ! A tru artist in many levels! Bravo 👏. An inspiration to us all.
Hi Sylvie
Thank you so much !!
I'm happy to know that I'm bringing you some inspiration.
Take care;)

I see a lampshade. Either hanging from the ceiling, or a bowl full of fairy lights. Would create some beautiful random light and shadow pattern.
yes very good idea😉👍
Sometimes our patience gets tested. But you made a great recovery.
Thanks Harry 😍😍
I am always amazed that glue can be strong enough to hold a piece like this together when faced the forces exerted on it by the turning process. Every time I see this done, I expect the entire piece to explode as soon as you apply the chisel (if that's the right word for the tools you use).
I guess, like a good weld makes makes multiple piece of metal the same a a single piece; a good glue job makes multiple pieces of wood like a single piece.

Thank you for your comment 👍
Wood glue is very resistant if you follow a few guidelines, you have to put the parts under pressure for a certain time and you also have to put the right amount ... 🤔
of course you have to be careful when digging with the gouges and not apply too much force ... otherwise ... 😬
By far one of the most unique pieces I have watched be made. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time just waiting to see how it would stand up to the turning Amazing work
Hi Kelley
I am very happy that you appreciated my work and thank you very much for your comment 😊💕💕💕💕
Красота, ваза для печенья ! Я живу в России, люблю работать с деревом, но денег на оборудование нет, только ручной труд.

An original. Turned out wonderful. 🌟 And it didn't need anything you don't want it to have. Really enjoyed the watching. 👍

Fascinating alternative method to achieving an open segment bowl. I tried something similar with jigsaw puzzle pieces and viewers did not like it! But the hazelwood in this looks like a great choice. All the best. Ray

The pieces of wood reminded me of sliced potatoes… Would you please consider showing us the finished piece? Stained, waxed, whatever magic you artisans use?👍🏻👍🏻❤️
Thank you so much 😊
I love your out of the box way of turning! You’re very talented.

Amazing how all of our knuckles look the same LOL Very cool idea and project! Thanks for the share!
Hi Mikey and Alyssa
Thank you so much for your comment 👍😉
Very interesting 🤔, my diagnosis, the signs of an insane, but brilliant, woodturner.
Perhaps 🤔 caused by getting hit in the head by a fly-away bowl. No one ☝️ will ever know… 🤪
Just kidding, it was brilliant. Those were some really cylindrical branches.
Thanks for sharing 👍
🤣😂
Thank you for your comment comment 😃👍
Please don't be angry or frustration we always love and like your creation even worse anyway. From your Indonesian fans 🙏

I noticed injury on your hand,be safe.
Respect from Pakistan.
Hi Hafiz Usman
Yes you have to be careful because it is very easy to get injured with this kind of work.
Thank you and hello Pakistan
@@bawbreizhartwood Welcome
Thanks for the ideas, I thought that the next step would be to cast it is resin with some color to make the segments stand out.
Hi John
Thank you very much for your comment
Yes I will try with resin next time;)

Paint the background walls white and maybe add a brighter background source. It would make your woodworking pop more.

Congratulations, this video was the most original idea in my feed right now…

Love this idea. Can be adapted to many different woods. I think, I would have started with a solid wood base at the start.

Thank you for your comment😉👍
Yes in the end I had to put a more stable base..🤔
a beautiful lampshade
Thanks Rudi 😊❤️
Very interesting Morgan! saw in another comment you wanted to keep the color white. Try Minwax Polycrylic. It will not add a tint to your wood. Plus easy to use and will make a great finish.

Bravo - A great result from a very challenging project.
Hi Pryere
Merci beaucoup pour votre commentaire ❤️❤️❤️
Creative, as usual, Morgan! Would have liked to have seen a final finish though. Also, if i may suggest….you really need a dust collection system, even if it’s just a shop vac to collect sanding dust! The medical community are discovering more and more specie of wood as containing cancer causing carcinogens. Most folks think “well I’m just not that exposed to that sanding dust and I’ll wear a mask”…..it’s just not enough Morgan! I say this out of concern for your health. I’d really hate to see your creativity and talent cut short because of lung cancer that could have been prevented!! Please consider at least a shop vacuum? Sound wouldn’t be an issue with your videos because there’s no narration anyway! Think about it please.
Hi Charles
Thank you very much for caring about my state of health 😉
Note that I always wear a high protection mask and that in addition I have a very efficient suction system, I simply cut it for short periods when I film the sanding so as not to generate too much noise for the spectator 😉
But you are right, you have to protect yourself from very harmful wood dust !!
Would have looked cooler if u had filled it up with resin before turning so that all holes would have vanished and bowl would be more functional
Yes Why not 🤔
@@bawbreizhartwood yeah...especially because the inside pattern on this is just awesome...like a bent chessboard! would have been great...
Beautiful! Thanks for the video.
Hi Scott
Thankyou very much for your comment ;)
Very kewl, love it.
Thanks David 💕💕
When cutting with a bandsaw, lower the top guides until they are just above the piece being cut - that way you will not have wandering due to over-flexing of the blade.
1Igster1
yes that's right😉
Absolutely beautiful!
Hi Ron
Thank you very much for your comment ;)
I really like your idea. In the future, turn a little faster, making light cuts. Your peice will be a more uniform shape, and your tool won't get pushed around as much. Also, when hollowing, use your tool on the side going downward with the tools you are using. Although I haven't used one, I think you only use a hook on the upward turning side.
Denny pope
Thank you very much for your comment👍😉
and thank you also for the good advice😉
I would love to see this done again with resin filling in the holes, just a suggestion!
I redid 😉

😂😂 it's true when you work with wood, your hands are easily damaged, especially with tools ... 🙃
Wood, metal, concrete. It’s the nature of work. “By the sweat of thy brow shall ye eat, by your labor shall the ground bring forth food.”
Hi Evelbill or rather Zappa ?? 🤔😃
Thank you so much for your comment ❤️
at 9:28, the sound from the following clip started while the video still showed your hand on the wood and it made me jump for a second... That kind of thump thump sound is a jump-scare for any wood worker with their hand still on the part ;)
😅👍🙏
Very impressive 👏👌👍 glad it didn't break when it escaped from the lathe

While it looks very cool, it seems to me it would be more functional as a bowl to cast it in epoxy before turning it. A colored epoxy would give it some beautiful coloring.

Well, a very difficult piece to turn. Figured the original tenon didn't have enough meat to hold it when you reversed it, and guessed right for once.

Hi Matthew Willis
Thank you so much for your comment 😉👍👍
Watched your knuckle get bloodier the farther into the video and all I could think is... one or two of those bowls exploded already yikes!! LOL
I do have an honest question though... did it end up cracking? I know if you microwave it it would deactivate the glue wouldn't it? How long did the gluing process end up taking you? Awesome project!
Phew my joint is fine 😉
For the gluing I used relatively dry wood so I had no problems afterwards and no need for a microwave either.
Otherwise for the gluing process it took about 3 days to get dry.
I will do the experiment again with another glue to see if there are any differences.
Today the bowl has not moved at all and it is even very solid. 😉
Lovely work.
