  • welcome to this weeks woodturning video.
Woodturning - The Cube (Wobble Bowl)
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a large plywood cube into a three pointed wobble bowl
when woodturning a piece like i find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning. big log to bowl (little bowl) but i find removing the wood in layers allows me to find the best possible shape.
If you find these videos entertaining I’d appreciate you hitting the thumbs-up button and if you'd like to see more from me you can simply click the subscribe button or bell icon.

I'll admit at first I thought "what's the point of turning a cube if he's just gonna make it round?" Then I saw the final product and realized this is why you're the artist and I'm some fool who doesn't know what he's talking about. Well done.

What a beautiful piece but your start of the turning so brought back memories of jr high school wood shop and the day a student caught his tool roughing in his piece on the lathe he caught the tip and launched his chisel across the shop and fully embedding into the wall! Needless to say everyone got a lecture about safety!

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  2 года назад +8

Hi Jim, as I beginner I’d recommend you don’t try to emulate my practices and instead learn the basics first. For example people have an issue with me starting this project with a square piece of wood and using the lathe rather than the bandsaw to make it round.
Iv been turning wood as my profession for many years. The way I work is safe for me as I know the potential hazards and understanding how to avoid them.
Woodturning os complex by nature and understanding the basics first is essential.
That being said, if I was only making videos that could be copied directly by a beginner my channel would not be anywhere near as interesting.
Please don’t use my videos as information, they are not intended that way which is why I don’t narrate them or at any time instruct others to do anything.
If you have any questions regarding woodturning I’m always more than happy to advise.
      Cheers
      Jack.

Back in Jr high I had mostly finished a bowl I'd spent the entire quarter on, was just putting it on the lathe for some final sanding -- but someone had left the lathe at full speed when they powered it off and my bowl rapidly hit an RPM that shattered it into dozens of pieces. Found some of it 40 feet away.
Kind of a shame. Also, potentially fatal but I lucked out.

If you are making this from seasoned wood of ply wood you can leave the bottom thick and the walls thin, leave the bottom round and it will spin, wobble ever so slightly but stay fully up right regardless of how you fill it 👍🏻

This is the best 'cube bowl' I've seen so far...the points aren't just tapered up to the same pitch as the side of the bowl, creating deep dips that only make it good for either a fruit bowl, or decorative bowl of some kind... but this bowl has many practical uses because it can actually hold liquids & whatnot... it's not just a decoration... good design...🖖🏿😎👍🏿

First thing you should consider is a vacuum machine to suck away the dust (like you see in the video). Then, big and good lathes have a rail on the height of your knees which kill the power in case you get dragged towards the machine. Most important is a faceshield and not working with longsleeve clothings, bracelets, chains around your neck or hoodie strings hanging down your shoulders. Turning is relaxing, focusing and satisfying (y) - go for it!

Did you have the form in mind from the beginning? How much planning does this take? It seems like sculptural magic, revealing the hidden soul in the wood.

Love the artistry of this piece, but was nervous the whole time waiting for the wings to clip your hand and smack your knuckles bloody. Glad you came out unscathed with a really unique-looking bowl!

Nice job Mack. That plywood I'm sure dulled your tools quite readily. If you can get a large block of Zebra wood and do that wait till you see that pattern. Keep making chips👍

Thanks for watching Scott, the ply actually turned relatively well, it was not as pleasant as turning greenwood or solid wood of course but no where near as bad as the resin projects iv done.
I have some zebrano, I think il be using it in a video very soon 😊
      I appreciate you following along
