True. They did let us know they used the power of TFL to get the ball rolling with their engineer friends
Someone at toy found a cheaper way to make it

Here's What Broke on Our New Toyota... doesn't show a damn picture of the broken part, not even a parts diagram? Transparency, eh?
I hate to say it, but if it was a regular customer like the average Joe, they would have found every reason to blame us for the issue.
You're probably right that is why I would not tell them I was on a trail when it broke. I would just say the 4 wheel drive quit working.
If this had happened to me the service department would have blamed it on me and voided my warranty.
I don't think so. This is Toyota were talking about here not Ford
Toyota just did something similar with the HVAC failure on a family member RAV4. They made up everything under the sun to not cover it.
They would absolutely blame it on abuse by the owner and deny any warranty claims. The statement about it being designed to fail under extreme conditions to protect the rest of the drive-line is going to be their go-to line every time.
Next time TFL has an issue like this, do it as an anonymous customer first... let's see how these manufacturers treat you when you are a regular Joe like us.

TFL is a business and needs to act like one.
Trust is important in their business.
They filmed it, what else do you expect?
@@valdius85TFL is a business. A business that reviews cars for future customers. A more realistic situation would be, to pretend like you are a regular joe, because Toyota service is horrible. I’ve had to almost fight the service department and salesperson to settle stuff. But they are all obviously bootlickers and scratch eachothers back so screw us right?
@@Mobgnna707 my local Toyota dealership is so nice at the service department they bust their hump to diagnose and fix your problem. But I have a friend who has a 21 Highlander hybrid and there was something wrong with the battery wheels not engaging and the service department did everything they could. They had the car for 4 months before Toyota got back to that dealership. They let my friend use one of their courtesy Toyota Tundras which was a 1999 to use in the meantime. Toyota corporate is terrible honestly. Fortunately I just have a really awesome local dealership.

Only reason Toyota put 20 people on the issue because a million people are looking at the video.

Or they may have more failures than we know about.
On the positive side, this channel is serving a good purpose, and Toyota is responding as they should.
Partly. Also, it’s a rollout of a completely redesigned new generation of the Tacoma. So…. They gonna investigate.

Can’t wait for Toyota’s chief engineer to contact me when I have trouble 😂
well....if you have over a 1million followers or "potential buyers" It's in Toyota best interest to fix, not out of the kindness of their hearts or "warranty" but to make good PR on it's truck sales.

“Designed to fail under extreme conditions.” Me: watching the video looking for extreme conditions. 🙄
Yep, almost level ground with a small amount of snow😂😂😂
Land Rover speak for “I have a regiment of low wage, trained mechanics for this”
Kind of extreme conditions, did not use snow tires, did not air down and the ESP was working hard => braking hard => stress on driveline. Its still a joke it broke. Next time maybe use lockers front and rear when trying to do something like this without airing down on the wrong tires.😂
Exactly. And on factory tires
Extreme conditions can mean when u put so much stress to the components and that's what happened
The best part about this is that there is precedence now set for Toyota to cover this issue. They won’t be able to deny other claims with this so recorded.

Yeah, honestly, I hate that attitude so much. Every fanboy and loyalist basically excuses their OEM selling junk for the first few years of a new models' production. This isn't a special beta testing phase or pre=production durability testing- they're selling full-price trucks to real-world customers. This mindset from consumers is so stupid.
Blueberry turned out to be a lemon
Zing! But blueberry-lemon actually is a good combo. Lol
Underrated comment 😂

One problem with a vehicle, doesn’t make it a lemon. Nice try.
New name lemon-berry.
I'm a lifelong Toyota fan after having owned several older Taco's and even a Rav4. They make quality vehicles that usually outlast our US Domestic stuff which is huge selling point for them. That being said I wished we still had self locking hubs and 𝙉𝙊𝙏 all the electric BS we now have because it was tried and true and functional without failure. As a mechanic they just keep making stuff harder for us to work on and more costly to repair.
Top reason why I'm seriously considering buying a 2020-2023 Taco or 4Runnner next year. May not be as sexy and worse on gas mileage but there are a ton of aftermarket part options and those vehicles have been tried-and-true for years. A quick look at Toyota's website shows consumers can't even buy a nice crew cab with 4-Wheel Drive for under $40k. Can't even imagine what they'll want for the base Trail Hunter and Pro models. We all know that the 4Runner will likely be even worse. Not to mention the saturation of packages that easily add $4k-5k+.
Yeah those toyotas are the king of tough mall parking lot trucks.
If this happened to a regular customer (non youtuber), Toyota would do whatever it takes to blame it on the owner. Dont give them too much credit because they are taking good care of you, for obvious reasons.
agree
Very true
💯
exactly, that video made that engineer lose some sleep Im sure.
Couldn’t agree more, based on my own Toyota ownership experience. It’s too bad that TFL had to back down from the raw commentary they provided in the previous video - in that video Andre very clearly said that they never encountered a failure of this sort on that trail in 8 years of testing. Now all we are hearing is about the “early production” truck, when in fact Toyota has had to issue a series of recalls on their trucks in the last few weeks alone. This, after Toyota and its dealers feel quite comfortable charging premium prices for their cars and trucks too.
The most unbelievable part of such a mechanical failure so early on is not that it actually happened but that the dealer response and factory involvement was so rapid. Average owners know intuitively had this happened to them, regardless of manufacturer, it would be days/weeks of waiting for an appointment then endless rounds of this is not covered under warranty from the dealer. Note to self, own a media company and have engineering connections at the manufacture is the lesson learned here.
The lesson I got was NEVER buy a new over priced junk truck from any brand. 🤣
Considering how slow Toyota has been with issues on their other cars like the GR86's high G-Force oil starvation I wouldn't trust TFL's experience in the slightest.
NAHHH they tempted FATE..and you know what does happen whe you tempt FATE..off roading with no GSP..you suffer the indignation of whoops something badly went wong!
Why would this not be covered under warranty? I keep seeing this kinda comment. EDIT: I work a Toyota dealership. lol
The minute a vehicle leaves the pavement it’s considered a severe/extreme or potential abuse use type of scenario. Ironic, especially when brands are advertising their trucks to consumers as lifestyle/adventure off-road vehicles. Not doubt, Toyota will make things right in this specific instance due to the PR side of things but for the average consumer (as with most other vehicle brands) it would prove more difficult to get fixed as part of a warranty claim.
ADD sounds like a 5amp fuse for something running 10amps.
Mechanic of 30 years experience checking in - I had suspected a front axle disconnect, simply because I know how they work, and let's face it, if it had been a ring and pinion failure, it would have like blown chunks, and more importantly made a HELL of a lot more racket.
For everyone that will claim TOYOTA QUALITY! - Toyota doesn't make that part, they contract with someone else to make it, then they install it in their setup. Point being, with quality as whole on the downturn, if you designed a new part, and contracted it out to be made, it doesn't matter if it was Ford, GM, Ram, or anyone. A part with an unforeseen stress factor will fail no matter who's truck it's installed in. The front axle disconnect is actually VERY susceptible to this - all it is is a splined tube that is slid sideways by an electric actuator, and connects both axles together....they are splined on the outer diameter to match the splines on the tube. You hit the button, the tube slides from one axle to bridge both axles together, and Bob's your uncle, you're in 4x4. But, there's probably only 2 to 3 inches of tube on each side of each axle, so the ALL of the power sent to the front axle is dependent on this thing staying in one piece. This is where we have the unforeseen stress factor - if it's a cast disconnect, you could have casting flaws, porosity, any number of things to reduce the strength of the part that would NOT be readily apparent. If it's steel, it could have been too brittle, metallurgy isn't right for the PSI the part is seeing, the list goes on.
The takeaway is, I bet Toyota's VERY interested, because unlike Ford or GM, they WILL recall trucks to solve this problem.
Extreme conditions failure. This is deeply concerning as TFL was not operating their truck in extreme conditions. Now imagine a solo 2024 Tacoma owner 30 miles out in 4x4 conditions and this happens. There’ll be no 20 Toyota engineers helping you. Sheldon spoke so highly that this vehicle was extensively tested to commercial standards. This sincerely shakes my confidence.
On a slippery slope covered in ice in which neither truck had great traction, even andre slipped and fell and hurt himself, is extreme for 90% of people. TFL takes their trucks where normal people wont

Considering how early the issue appeared, Toyota corporate would be interested anyway (no mater if its a youtuber's car or a regular person's car) to take a look at the problem and perhaps issue a recall of that part.
When I picked up the latest gen Rav4 in '19 I had one of the first few adventure grade out of the plant. There were multi terrain select issues. My local toyota dealership treated me the same way? I’m glad dozens of Toyota specs came out to diagnose and repair ur truck. That doesn’t happen in the real world.
They do send out engineers for these problems though. I have a friend who's tundra had a steering wheel shake. After the dealership exhausted their resources and still couldnt fix it (i think he had it in there 4-5 times) Toyota sent out an engineer who worked on it for about a week to find the underlying issue and fix the problem. It was an improperly torques steering rack. this was a 2018-2019? model. So its not like the generation was even new. They might not send a dozen but they sent one and not on a new gen. Pretty good in my book. I now own a Tundra as well after GM told me to suck it on 2 trucks in a row with catastrophic failures around 100k miles. No engineer came out to tear down my engine or transmission to tell me why they failed so early with following the dealer recommended maintenance to a T

I’m sure that if I had the same experience, I wouldn’t have received a call from Toyota engineers. But, I’m glad you did. By raising these issues on your channel you help all other owners by making the OEM take notice. And, you’re probably ultimately also helping Toyota. Toyota trucks biggest selling point is not features or value-ii’s reliability. By pointing out a problem with an early production vehicle, you give them a chance to address the problems before the problem occurs to hundreds or thousands of customers. Unlike a regular customer, you know exactly how you were using the vehicle and exactly what was going on at the time of failure. So, I’m happy you get special treatment. It’s a service to everyone.

Nah GM is second to Stelantis in the junk category. You know it. Quit hating on Toyota. Yes the new stuff may never be the same as the older generations. So that's why I'll stick to buying used, older generation Toyotas from now on.
Don't think so,bought a brand new 60k Silverado with less then 1000k miles already had lifters replaced by dealer.
It’s nice having a public channel that keeps Toyota honest. It’s nice that they got a dozen engineers looking at the problem. Hopefully, it gets an update on the 2025?
I think toyota will recall and fix this problem on all new 2024 tacoma
Try 2026-2027. They have a track record of slowly implementing changes or updates.
TFL enjoying the 'white glove' treatment 😄
@@vais3 Slowly having updates on not critical areas, but there will be a recall on a major problem on the best selling small truck in America.
@@erics3527 I love how you throw in "best selling small truck in America" like that somehow justifies a $50k 4x4 self-destruction with moderate 4x4 use. Hilarious.
Well, you just made the valid point it’s designed to fail under extreme conditions what you were doing on that day was not in any way, shape or form extreme therefore, they build junk
WOW amazing TY so much ,,Keep up the great work
The ToyotaTacoma is made for the toughest mall runs in North America.
Only malls in the south tho, they aren’t very reliable in the north with snow squalls and icy spots apparently 😳
I don't know. Those mall parking lots with the curb stops make it dicey.
Jeeps are the true road princess of suburban America.

Toyotas are girly trucks!!
Toyota has so many people looking at it because they actually have a video of the event. The video show that the damage occurred during normal stress. That raises concern that it could be a common occurrence.
Your honesty is always the greatest reasons I watch you guys.
I toyota already on it seems like they are going to be needing to do some updates to future 4th gen years
Great follow-up from both TFLT and Toyota. A lexus saved my life at 130mph. As soon as i can recover financially, I'll be back. Truck high but slow with low...tq.
The 'snap' heard 'round the world.
that's forsure
😅Oh!! ........😂SnAP.
😅Oh!! .........😅SnAP.
TFL should have dropped it off to the dealer without informing Toyota corporate to see if there was any hassle about having it repaired, now that Tacoma VIN number is surely red flagged in a Toyota database somewhere.
Its a very smart idea to make the center axle disconnect be the weaker link of failure but unfortunately it just doesnt work as well as intended. Many other manufactures have done this. I believe the late 80s jeep wagoneer was the first to utilize a center axle disconnect( or as toyota refers the ADD). Many other manufactures except ford followed up with the design but gradually moved away due to too many failures.
My personal opinion is that the best front axle disconnect system was manually locking hubs. I use to offroad with bronco axles and while many jeep Rubicons would break expensive axle shafts, i just break a 30 dollar hub that is quickly swapped on the trail.
ty for sharing, can't wait to see what happens ... btw while puppy was up I started to notice some of your parts having surface rust already ... kinda quick
There are 20 people working on the problem because they know it shouldn't have failed. The video shows it wasn't even that aggressive of a driving situation. The traction control probably caused the failure or whatever toyota calls their TC system.
Yupp truck broke it self
TC, total crap. Lol
I'm guessing Toyota will offer a software flash to fix the traction control damaging the transfer case.
It's a huge campaign to keep it on the down low because now in the internet generation you can't get away with making junk. Ford's been doing it for 30 years and now social media has caught up with it
And how much did this little TOYota cost? Stupid money for a bunch of weak sauce parts that are "designed to fail" sprinkled with nanny tech.
There's something that needs to be said about manual levers and locking hubs. All of this "mother may I?" tech in these newer vehicles is another elephant in the room. Asking permission from a computer to shift from 4L to 4H is ridiculous.
After I saw when the truck broke. I watched the Car Care Nut channel. He showed that one of the changes to save weight on the 4th gen vs. the 3rd gen was towards the passenger side of the front differential center housing. It's now an all aluminum bolt on section. That's where the actuator and A.D.D. are located. Prior to watching this, I had already placed my bet on it being within that area of the front differential. They should have left it cast iron right across like it is on the 3rd gen. I'm still happy that I bought my 23 at this point.
Very good "detective" work on your part. I just watched a TCCN video where Ahmed talks about the new 2024 Taco. (It's probably the same video you're talking about.) I too just recently got a 2023 Taco (with a manual) and I'm also glad that I got that.
It being aluminum isn't a weak point.
I wonder if people can update and buy diff armor for this weakness. I love my 3rd gen more and more.
The next gen theyll be plastic like the bed and youll still buy it dooming us
@@stephencruz885If the differential tube was weak and broke, oil would have leaked out. Most likely it’s the slide collar inside or shaft that broke
Glad I went with the Jeep Gladiator. For those "EXTREME" gravel roads I take to go camping I have peace of mind my diff isn't going to snap when I hit a pothole.
Saw your first video, awesome stuff. I am still a die hard toyots guy, I just won't buy the new tacoma for a while. Curious to see what their fix will be to prevent this issue in the future. Be sure to post that video to talk about their solution when they have one! 👌👍
20 people working on it !! 1 Engineer and 19 bean counters !!!
But it was designed to fail, lol
I'd bet it is 20 engineers. Not so much that it necessarily takes that many, but rather that you want to figure it out and fix it quickly, and have that knowledge across the group. Look at the recalls that Toyota does. They are often on things that may fail, and haven't had many serious accidents. And since Toyota uses the same parts across a bunch of things, it's best to figure this out now, before the part potentially goes into the new land cruiser and even 4runner. It could just be that higher low end torque. Bad metallurgy on this batch? Bad assembly? Or likely a combination of those things plus a new part that doesn't have a little wear on it. How many times has it been in 4wd in those first 3600 miles? It shouldn't fail, but they don't want it to happen for others.
1 engineer, 2 bean counters, and the rest PR and lawyers....
I just hope they actually fix this. I think this Channel needs to test the fix.
lmao
The 24 tacoma front diff housing is cast iron. The ADD is now aluminum goes to the passenger side. That broke. Third gen it is complerely cast iron.
Are you saying the housing broke or the parts inside broke. Transmission housing are made aluminum and those don’t break.
and the truck is 20k more with china made parts.
Thank you for the update! Looking forward to some ranger raptor stuff :) I might need one of those, should be top notch performance and look good too
I worked for Toyota and my experience is Toyota stands behind their vehicles. When I work there I seen them replace engines that were well out of warranty for a recall. We had engineers fly out and shadow customers to see what they were used for. We were in northern Canada working in gas and oil industry.
There were no extreme conditions in this case, not even close. It could be a single bad part, or a design flaw. Either way, had the part broken deep into the trail, it would have been a big problem getting back. And folks commenting are right, had an average person had this issue, they may not or would not have received the same attention.
Materials fatigue so the situation from the video might it be what caused the failure in terms of percentage of influence.
Obviously the truck broke down, TFL did multiple tests on it but nothing special.
Thankfully, them doing this sets the tone for every average person to not be denied with this specific issue.
I feel like they should have brought it in as a “regular” customer first then reached out Toyota. As someone who had issues with warranty on my Tacoma several years ago (no longer a customer) I think the audience needs to know what a regular reaction to the issue would have been.
I agree 100%. If this happens to anyone else please do record it. We want to see Toyotas treatment of customers. They have been making some jacked up design and engineering decisions for years now. German crap especially. If this continues one will be forced to consider other manufacturers junk as a purchase option.
We know what the reaction is like when youre not youtube famous and toyota doesnt have to worry about screwing you because if a bear shits in the woods and no one saw it did it reallt happen? Thats 100% the toyota we are dealing with today. Theyre selling junk for high prices its not quality either. Infact the average quality is lowest its ever been in my life esspecially with toyota and all the others. Robbery scam artists.
This is why I bought a 2024 4Runner TRD Off Road. Switched my deposit from a new Tacoma. Buy a classic why you can.
I knew a guy who had one of the first factory low production number 4 x 4 Toyota Hilux trucks in the state if not the nation and he had ZERO problems with it for over 200k miles. Until he dumped it back on its' roof trying to go up a too steep of a sand dune. He just cut the top and kept driving it!
Like they say, Don't make um like they used to!
If only they hadn't contacted Toyota to experience how a dealership treats the average everyday Joe. I can't just ring up Toyota's PR or engineers to have them work on my truck!
After thinking about it I bet they were running into issues with Toyota that is why they called the Toyota PR team! 😂😂😂
If the techs at the dealer are having a hard time diagnosing an issue, help line and the field engineers do get involved. It happens more than you think.
Why isn't anyone theorizing that it was the Colorado up on the snowy knoll that took the shot, taking out the Tacoma?
LOL 😂
only one? 😂
because the people taking the shot on the grassy knoll was originally on the same team as the target, until the target refused to play ball.
@@billw8476 ahhh, you must be talking about a certain executive order put in place by said target, that was promptly tore up after said target was taken out.
I’ll stick with the new Frontier. Super tough little truck with a great V6 engine and an awesome transmission.
Loved it when the guy driven was like “That didn’t sound good” 😂😂😂
The video of it breaking is like watching an athlete’s sports injury. 😳
😂😂😂
Joe Theismann Syndrome?
I'm just thankful they cut the part where Andre fell on the ice 😬
Ankel snap
I’m sure someone from Toyota or the dealership heard all about this vehicles breakdown on the trail, it’s all over the truck sites, they watch them also. The “snap heard around the world”😝
Wow. Would Toyota also have 20 engineers working on my Toyota warranty problem?
They might have 20 lawyers working on it...
Toyota should sponsor you guys for the testing y'all do.
I was the one that gave you the thumbs up on 119 leaving Boulder! Cool to see your 4th gen for the first time!
So the Taco has shear pins! 😂
Bahahaha like a snow blower
Yup. That you need to bring to the dealer to repair.
@@watchingvideos4309 I was just going to say that!
A Thoth pick pin holding the differential in place.
LOL
Hmm..part designed to fail under extreme conditions to keep other things from breaking sounds good..However, the conditions were not extreme in my mind..
"Parts designed to fail right when you depend on them most"-toyota 2024
"This little truck is more durable than a 2016 f150"-toyota 1989
great that they have a engineering team on it so fast I agree it should not have failed. It sounded like it snapped as soon as it got up to boost pressure maybe some one forgot to carry when calculating torque numbers
I'm not fully up to speed on the feature/trim level combinations on this new Tacoma. This one looks to be a TRD Off Road DCSB. Does it have a locking center differential or the SDM (stabilizer disconnect feature)? Just curious about your specific build and driveline features.
I'm looking forward to see this run it's course. No offense, but I'm glad this happened to you guys, so it won't be buried, or swept under the carpet.
Take it back to the exact same spot and see what happens. I'm glad Toyota's engineering team is getting involved. Will be interesting to see if they change the design of anything.
Keep up with the good work
