Love your content. But, may I ask you please reconsider playing music over people talking? Thanks
I have a GFC on a Tundra and the mileage was worse with the camper until I took those GFC Beef rack bars off the top and then it is almost the same as stock mileage. The space above the cab is necessary for body flex off road not just the antenna clearance as with a Toyota truck there is a lot of flex between the bed and cab. I love the GFC for it's practicality. They are very versatile.
26.3mpg before and 23.3mpg after. Now what to do with your saved 10 minutes of life...
Enjoy the video on my commute
Thank you.

The wind noise of that topper really came through on the video, that would drive me insane. I'd like to see how the noise and MPG would do with a deflector mounted in front of it.
One thing is for certain, it's an absolutely gorgeous and a great way to kill an afternoon with more than a few places of interest to stop at along the way!
When I added a RTT to my 2022 Power wagon I added a rack that was low enough to let me add a large RTT and keep it below my truck roof line. The tent with the rack added 225 lbs. I also have a rolltop bed cover. After 4 long toad trips it has only cost my mileage 3/10th of a MPG. The trick is to keep the tent below roof line if you want to save your MPG.
I just picked up my OR Premium earlier this week. With no modifications yet, I hit 25mpg on my 30 mile commute, 98% of it was highway, and the engine hasn't broken been broken in yet.
🔥Thanks Andre, Nathan and TFL Camera Ninja🔥
Well. I kinda find this attractive. My 2004 4Runner with a mild lift, metric 32's that are load E all terrains, realistically gets high 19's in a similar high desert conditions. So...
Thanks for putting this vid together. It shows what happens to this truck when a bed lid gets above the cab.
I would also like to see what happens when you throw a heavier set a dirt worthy tires on it. Nice work guys.👍
I'm curious what the percentage lose was on the lightening? Thanks for the video guys, very informative and entertaining as always.
That camper shell has a top built like a sail! Put a camper shell on my tundra that is level with the roof line of the truck,no difference in the gas mileage! Plus now have a dry secure storage area! 😊😊
but this is also a pop up tent camper
So far All the mpg test videos I've seen of this new tacoma has been very good, the hybrid should be even better but we will have to wait till next week to find out how much better it will be
I don't think the hybrid will be better. It might even be worse - it will definitely be the same or worse on highway. It's designed to increase power, not efficiency.
$8k - $10k for a (fancy) truck canopy is just insane. My first (real) truck camper was $16k (Northstar 8.5 SC).
Can you guys drive it to alaska like you did with the lighting
It'd be useful to compare different octanes in some of these new turbocharged pickups. We know they have knock sensors to prevent detonation but how much are you losing - compared to the savings - if you go down to 85, and do you get anything if you to up to 89/91?
Got a 2022 Tacoma TRD Off Road with a Four Wheel Camper .. the Swift. Tacoma stock was getting 22/23 mpg at 4680 lbs .. with the camper I dropped to 15/17 mpg and that's with 6100 lbs total weight. Both measurements were done with the truck full of all my gear and the same with the camper .. propane, 20 gal's onboard water, etc. 🤠
Better width than the fleet model for mpg. Still 950 lbs for a minimally equiped midsize truck camper is on the hefty side. Sturdiness and durability has a price. Hope they can lighten it up with more exotic materials in the future.
Yikes! My 2017 OR had a GVWR of 5600! Are you overweight?
This is quite impressive. My old '89 Toyota 4x4 truck with a 22RE only got 16MPG.
My 86 4runner with 22RE in stock form got 24mpg
My 89 toyota pickup 2wd 4 cyclinder manual got 23 to 24mpg.
Surprising mileage!
More importantly what's left of the payload after you put that on there? 1200 lbs - ? Sounds like you're going to be weighing each occupant along with their gear to stay within payload.
do the math yourself
Wishing it was more like 1500#. More for my work needs than anything else.
Payload schmayload, those numbers are just suggestions.
It's a rooftop tent. Really pushing the boundaries with calling it a camper.
What do you do with a roof top tent? you camp in it!
True, but with a high and what looks to be Very strong bed cover top to where you could have a camp setup in the bed space. Also, how hard and costly would it be to put a camp top on standard truck caps and not worry about collapsing it. It's an engineered system. Price is a bit high but it does work well and likely better with a fairing...
And it is 10K
It's a shorter word and easier to say. Big deal.
“Achtually 🤓”
Settle down bud
Since Bilbo Baggins was celebrating his 111 birthday at the beginning of the story, the mileage leader of the Denver 100 should be crowned "The Lord of the Ring Road".
Good information
The best part of this video is his Aquabats shirt.
It'd be better if Project Farm did these tests for you guys.
I agree 💯
Project Farm would only do this if he could test 12 different “camper shells”. Then he would:
-Put them on 8 different trucks and cars for install characteristics and MPG loops.
-Test insulation
-Test paint durability
-Test sound
-Test for bear, bobcat, and mountain lion defense
-Test for rain protection
-Test for comfort
All in a very tidy 30-45 minute video while also buying everything himself 😂
@@Captain-Awesome Yep, that’s the way he is.
I really enjoy watching his videos
@@Doc1855 me too
@@Doc1855 me too, he is by far the best product reviewer on RUclips. Other than trucks obviously, that belongs to Andre 😎
Guys, you’re on the freeway, weight has little to do with your performance. On the freeway, the wind noise is your indicator, drag is the topic of degraded performance.
Correct, once the mass is in movement, the energy to maintain that movement is negligible. Weight's affect would be more pronounced with stop and go driving.
Matches what I got before and after the GFC. Lost around 2 to 3 mpg, depending on wind and speed.
I think the camper between the roof of cab and bottom of the campers over the cab on the front is creating a big pocket of wind resistance as it comes over the windshield & under the camper it's acting like a big glove for a sail and creating more resistance cuz it seems like it hits the camper wall and acts kindof like a parachute so if u were able to fill the gap with some type of aero peice similar but nicer than the ford lightning to alaska trip wher it was fixed in a parking lot that ud gain like 1.5 to 2 miles back on ur mpg
A well-designed fairing definitely would help.
“Seems like”, but not that big of a deal when they got the result.
For the stupid price of the camper and the MPG hit, it would just be way cheaper to stay in 5 star hotels, lol
yea and I don't see how you can camp in a tiny 5' bed, you couldn't even lay down unless you are a midget.
But then you can’t pretend you’re an “overlander”! 😂
If you're doing it correctly, there are no hotels nearby.
I don't think its the MPG hit that's the costly part, its the 10k on the camper that really sucks
with that mentality there is a LOT of the world you’re missing out on
It covers the antenna? You will not be able to use SXM. They need to make a relocation kit for it or you use the use of the antenna.
The Tacoma never has had a turbo 4-cylinder, that engine was in the 1985-1988 pickup truck.
It does now.
Topping off the tank can cover the vapor intake hole with liquid gas, which can then be sucked into the charcoal canister. This can damage the canister and possibly other parts of the system, which will cause the car's check-engine light to come on and could potentially cost hundreds of dollars to repair.
They’re not topping it off. That’s when you slow it down and run it up to the top. It will mess up the valve to the crankcase and affect performance until replaced.
I don't get why the camper doesn't include a wind fairing/deflector from the factory.
26.3 to 23.3? pretty good! would love to see one done with a full height camper. pretty sure it would be WAY more mpg loss.
i kept a canopy on my 97 f150 most of the time, and noticed an increase of about 8%mpg the times i had it off.
Well this time beside having the camper there was 2 large guys in the truck not just 1. Would make some negative difference
How did the cover impact the satellite reception?
What about the Satellite radio and possibly other bands not working because of the antenna being blocked?
This is exactly the video I wanted you to make when I watched the install video. Overall would you say the new Mid-Size trucks have better highway fuel-economy then a comparable 1/2ton?
I can chime in as I have a modern mid-size trucks and a 1/2 ton (Jeep Gladiator and F-150 respectively). My Gladiator gets 21 mpg combined and my F-150 gets 14 mpg combined.
Well DUH
I have a 2015 Ram 1500 5.7l 4x4 8-speed Quadcab. And a 2023 Gladiator Mojave 3.6l. Ram gets an average slightly above 19 MPG, Mojave gets 17.4 MPG. Comes down to aero and gearing. They weigh almost identically. They have the same 285/70R17 tires. I drive pretty easy and hang in the right lane. Jeep has 4.10s, Ram has 3.21s. Oddly the Ram has a Fab Fours front bumper and a 2" front level. Still gets slightly better hwy mpg. Driving the Jeep on a windy day is a bit more work than the Ram. I've had both since new. 167K on the Ram with not one issue.
Does the camper affect the satellite GPS antenna?
Yes the music is annoying. How much does the camper weigh ? I've had a Leer high roof camper on my 2011 RAM 5.7 since new. Cost $1400. I get 22 mpg on the hwy,17-18 mpgs city if I'm careful with the acceleration 😮.
Get rid of the music,
And the running boards
🙄......there's always gotta be one angry person finding something to bitch about. What a moronic comment, dude.
Agree, the music is distracting otherwise another great video, thanks
Yup
Stop crying like a female
What are the turbo temperatures looking like at highway speeds?
First run had one man in the truck, the run with the topper had an additional man in the truck. Toyota isn’t known for their great payloads, so adding 300 lbs in the passenger seat will automatically decrease the mpg, regardless of the topper.
Can really hear a lot of wind noise. Needs some kind of wind deflector.
I will never understand these tent campers. Take 15 minutes and pitch a tent with a nice air mattress and use the payload capacity you save for more important things like firewood and food.
I didn't get the campers either until I bought one and used it :)
It’s nice to be well off the ground, especially in bear territory.
You're not safe from bears unless you're in a solid sided vessel. They can open doors, claw through fabric, and are amazing climbers. Unless you have a full hardwired camper, if a bear wants in, they will get in. Ground tent vs roof top tent offer the same protection from bears. On their hind legs they can easily be 10' tall.
I don’t get it either. Expensive, ruin any aerodynamics on the highway, ruin center of gravity off road. They are cramped, and you have to climb down a ladder to go pee. You are more exposed to wind up high. Most look like Walmart quality tents when unfolded.
99% of the time if solo I sleep in a hammock with a rain fly. Weighs 2 lbs. Takes up virtually no space. Less than $100.
Wait till you throw a roof top tent and 35's on there and you are getting 15 highway like everyone else who has.
Doesn't matter. They are saving money because they still live with their parents and the office is only 5 minutes away. Nobody doing any serious driving or hauling uses a Toyota. Just too inefficient.
@@Land_Raver What are you talking about? People put roof top tents, 35's, steel bumpers and skid plates and all sorts of crap all over these things. Every other Tacoma around here has a roof top tent on it and 33" KO2's.
Since these new trucks can fit 35's with almost zero effort, everyone will have 35's on them.
@@Jay-me7gw I'm talking about the abysmal fuel economy, especially when you modify. I thought your original comment was talking about that.
@@Jay-me7gwbut I want to look cool in the Costco parking lot!
My half ton doesn’t get driven unless the bed is loaded or going to be loaded. People need to stop wasting money on daily driving pickup trucks. It’s silly.
@@Land_Raver It was but your suggestion that people dont load up Toyota's is incorrect. People overload them all the time.
Toyota should have recongnized that and made the 3.4L from the Tundra an option. Even if it was detuned it would be a better engine in a modified truck turning big tires and carrying a bunch of weight.
Build the fairing boys!!!
What mode were you running in?
How's the XM reception with the camper on?
I bet nada
It's composite above the antenna. XM works fine.
You won't get any satellite radio with that fancy truck cap on... can't bring myself to call it a camper...lol.
That's too much money for that camper. I like the form factor though.
Compassion using a drop in truck camper vs a travel trailer. Do it with this truck and an electric truck.
Andre you can't tell me you weren't missing Mr Kent. 😂
$10k USD for WHAT!? That bed cap and rtt? And a 15% fuel penalty before any additional weight is actually added? That's going to be a really hard sell.
Seriously. Cheaper to buy a brand new RTT and a brand new camper shell.
@@skorea2131 that's my thoughts as well.
My guess is there’s a combination of things going on here. The increased weight and the turbulence from the front of the camper hurt mpg, but then not having the open bed helps mpg.
I thought the open bed thing was debunked by mythbusters like 20 years ago.
@@Jay-me7gw that was the open tailgate vs closed tailgate. An open (or removed) tailgate is actually worse for mpg. A number of tests have shown that tonneau covers increase mpg, and caps may also improve it depending on how heavy they are. I think tfl did a cap vs no cap test years ago and it was a wash.
There was only one guy in the first run, now besides adding camper there were two large guys
@@jmpattillo I had a leer topper on my F150 and it didnt make a meaningful difference on or off.
@@Jay-me7gw yeah, i think toppers are usually a wash. The extra weight balances out any gain from aerodynamics.
how would you damage a component filling up the gas tank?
Topping off repeatedly can damage evaporative components, you're supposed to top on the first fill up auto stop. Some people like to top their gas tank off to fill every bit they can but can causes issues from 'overfilling'
When I found out that Toyota was dropping the 3.5L Naturally Aspirated (NA) V6, I naturally bought the tried and true 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab , long bed with the Premium and Technology pkgs.
Historically a Turbo engine simply doesn’t last as long as a NA engine.
I had this engine and transmission when I bought my Tacoma. Trash ended up trading in the taco 7 months later for a zr2 diesel
@Doc1855 how long do you plan on keeping your Tacoma?
@@ALMX5DP 15-20 years or 300K miles
@@Doc1855 these new engines should do that just fine. I have a ‘15 Ecoboost that is still humming right along with no issues. I don’t anticipate any issues in the next 5-10 years. I’m sure an even more modern and thought out system as Toyota tends to do will be just fine.
@@ALMX5DP I’m happy for you, but I just don’t trust a Turbo engine.
I’m hoping I’m wrong, but I doubt it.
I’m too old and on a fixed income and if anything went wrong after the warranty I’d have to dip into my savings.
If I were still young enough to work, I’d probably look into it, but I just can’t afford to take the plunge at this stage in life.
I can’t seem to get my 24 Tacoma better than 19.2 totally stock no canopy no aftermarket stuff
In town 17.1 is my best
I’m not sold on the mpg
It’s been a bit of a disappointment same story 20 yrs ago with the 3.4 Tacoma mpg was never accurate to the manufacturer specifications.
Good luck
What your highway mpg? Speed? Elevation? I was shocked when I saw they got 26. My 98 Ram
1500 gets 8 in the city and 11 on the highway.....
Driving conditions/habits play a huge role. I’ve never had a difficult time meeting EPA ratings if I was conscious about my driving (can get 21+mpg highway in my F-150 5.0 if I keep speed in check, which is what the EPA rates it at).
Stay out of boost. I have owned many turbo cars and know how to drive without getting into boost. That will improve mpg. Just cause its turbocharged doesnt mean you need all of the power all the time. Some people in general just have a heavy foot and will consistently get less mpg than another driver. For example my wife and I. I get 2 mpg better than her all the time
I'm sorry about this, but WHY does Golden NOT want to complete the Denver Hyper-loop??? Don't get me wrong, highway 93 is great and all, but still....
If you’re worried about the mpg on any truck for any reason you probably can’t truly afford the truck.
Strange thing to like burning money 💰
@@D0praise can’t stand burning money but anyone who buys any truck with gas mileage in mind is kind of an idiot. just my opinion, to each their own
The audio was definitely worse (due to the camper?) when you were on the higher speed section.
Honestly, think that you need to load it up to maximum payload capacity with all the junk to go camping and do the loop again
10k for camper dang
Complete rip off.
You can get a full on luxury tent for less than half that!
@@Rekuzan But then its $3500 for even a half way decent fiberglass topper. This is 2 in 1.
@@Jay-me7gw Yeah, but yer still going to be losing MPG, and at $3.00 a gallon, it adds up quick. Especially if it a daily driver where it's just extra weight and drag that isn't being used for anything.
@@Rekuzan which is why I daily drive a $17000 used 2018 Chevy bolt and dont daily drive a brand new $60000 Tacoma with a $10000 GFC. It costs me 1/5th the cost to buy and 1/8th the cost per mile to drive it.
Anyone who buys this setup worried about saving $100 a year in gas is focusing on the wrong spending habits.
10k for that? What a ripoff 😆
Just because you’re too poor to afford quality truck accessories, doesn’t make them overpriced. Just means you’re selling your time for less than its worth.
NA. It Ain't no Camper. And 10K??? NA.
Watch you guys all the time. Really enjoy your videos.
But...... $10,000 !!!!!!!!! ........ for a CAMPER SHELL !!!!! And a bare bones one at that !
Did you tip the installer 18% and fork over an extra 3% to charge it on your credit card... Not to mention sales tax.
No thanks.
Stick a well designed deflector/fairing in front of the camper to stop the air getting between the camper and cab roof. Then see the efficiency regained. Possibly something at the back of the camper as well to reduce turbulence behind the vehicle.
The butt rock in the background is horrible
Dude LOOK AT THE ROAD!..you dont need to look at your passenger..he knows who your talking to
Is it me or the truck is pointing upwards now, I guess they should do what they did with their 7.3 gas superduty to fix that
Some folks are getting up to 27 mpg with the new Tacoma
If you put a lift and bigger tires on it you can get that mileage down quite a bit more. You can probably get it down into Jeep territory if you try hard enough. Ha!
Is no one else concerned about how low the rear suspension hangs. I saw one in person at my nearest Toyota dealer and it is low to the ground. Hangs as low as the side steps do.
It would be even more interresting to see the difference with an additional 1000lbs of payload. Noone is going to travel with that camper and an empty bed.
Older Toyota pickup trucks are not Tacomas, they are Toyota Hilux, Tacoma's started in 1995.5
No, you can't use 85 - or at least should not for the longevity, power, and efficiency. This has nothing to do with the turbocharger. It's the mass air flow sensor.
Even if you tried 85, you probably would lose any cost efficiency gained to lower fuel efficiency as the engine compensated for the lower octane fuel with with timing and fuel adjustment. The turbo makes you more likely to detonate with the lower octane fuel, but that is true of any increase in compression ratio and/or intake air temperature.
85 Octane fuel is somewhat useful for carbureted engines and fuel injected systems using an uncompensated vane air flow meter operating at high altitudes. It has no place in a modern vehicle designed for 87 Octane, because modern vehicles use a mass air flow sensor - which compensates for altitude - to measure intake air.
You should talk to an engineer and do a Denver 100 & Ike on 85 & 87. I would expect even a naturally aspirated truck to have a measurable decline in performance and efficiency with the lower octane fuel.
the bed cover and roof tent is so ugly LOL
Impressive results for carrying a Camper!!!
So glad that Toyota went back to a 4 cylinder in their “small truck”. I have personally never been a fan of V6 engines, just not happy sounding engines to me.
You could always get a 4 cylinder in every single year of Toyota truck in history
to me if you can afford a $10k tent you can probably afford a hit to the MPG lol
Yeah let’s all rush out to buy a camper that’s a quarter of the price of the truck. 😑
Lone Peak starts at $5,995
OMG 😲 $10k......never would have thought of anyone to spend that much for a little camper shell add-on. At that rate, buy the truck with this camper and live out of it.
The music is weird. Why?
I'm not so sure trusting the pump is accurate enough. Any issue with the pump could dramatically alter your results, for all of the tested vehicles.
That is why they use the same pump every time. At least if it isn't accurate, it is the same for all the trucks.
I would rather buy a nice ground tent and save $10k. And I won’t lose any MPG 😁
Nobody buys a truck for mileage. Ill keep my 18 trd until the wheels fall off.
If that was the case every one would own a one ton .
New TFL drinking game, any time someone says “dude” take a shot.
Use a 4’ POOL NOODLE ($4.00) as a wind wedge. It won't damage the paint and weighs ounces.

You should take off the door handles!
Apparently it does wonders for EVs 😅
Just a reminder...if you're considering purchasing a truck...don't be concerned about MPG. I have a a 2022 Tacoma TRD OFF ROAD 4X4 MANUAL...and I'm only concerned about...Smiles Per Gallon. 😉
seeing these fuel eco tests really make me wish GM didnt kill the duramax for the colorado. There is a twinge of hope though since the S-10 got the second gen of the babymax so who knows. Doubtful they'll add it but a man can dream though. A man can dream

they should probably add something to go around the space for shark fin
And no one should be rocking a tent on their daily driver so gas mileage shouldnt really matter that much
Toyota trucks flex so much you need that gap off road so the cab doesn't hit the camper. I have one on a Tundra and I love it. The roof rack bars caused more noise and gas mileage drop than the camper itself in my usage.

I was thinking like a flexible skirting maybe even a rubber or some designed not scratch to much
