- In this video I show you how to program new transponder or chip key for your Toyota.
Follow this quick step by step tutorial showing you how to program blank chip keys for Toyota vehicles.
You can buy these generic keys online, I purchased both keys on ebay for 12$ + shipping
You can get these keys cut by a local locksmith for about 5$
Before buying verify if you have a toyota dot key or not, if you do make sure you purchase a 4D chip key or check compatibility with the seller. (This can be found on my master key at 00.07seconds.)

2006 Land cruiser, it worked on my first attempts exactly how he showed! I programmed two keys, a master with a remote and valet key. FYI to program the remote is a separate sequence that must be followed I found on YT as well. The 2 keys are genuine OEM Toyota keys purchased from online dealership. I read some ppl had programming issues with knock-offs on Amazon and others didn’t so I just decided to go factory.

I see a few sets of instructions like these for different models/years, but nothing about where they come from. Are they documented in the Toyota shop manuals?
2007 sienna XLE closed the door 6x wouldn’t go into the programming mode. Found that if I open the door back up (after closing it 6x) so open and leave open on the 7th that the key light next to the speedometer stayed solid… I then placed my unprogrammed key in and waited a good minute and the key light stopped blinking / went off and it started right away. Thanks🎉.

This works only on much older cars. Newer cars, require a device (computer key programming device) plugged into the OBD port. Locksmiths can often do this, but one nearby charges $70, $100 if you did not buy the key from her. My Toyota bandit shop charges $29 for a valet key - no remote buttons and not a master key, and $180 for a FOB w remote. Then they charge $50 to program the chip key, takes about 5-15 minutes.

You spend about 200 at a 'yota dealership. _(Get a spare this time and do this when you loose one so you have a spare to do it yet again... repeat unto perpetuity so that you always have a spare key... but seriously get the extra key it's only like $15 more.)_ If your key is just broken and not lost, you can transplant the transponder chip from the old key into a new one. This will require breaking the new one, so get three new keys, one to break so that you can program the other two, thus leaving you with a key and a spare. Leave your spare at home. Don't use a hide-a-key, thieves know to look for them, but if you do... get a third key for the hide-a-key.

This procedure didn’t work on a 1999 Avalon. But the procedure that did work was using the gas peddle and break peddle.

Doesn't work on 1st Gen Highlander (2001+) if you don't have the original master unfortunately
Tried this on a Sequoia and it didn't do anything but make me feel silly! Since this only works for older cars you should say which ones work.
I have a 2014 Camry, I had to use a special device to program the key, thing is with my year car you can only program 4 keys to the car. I bought the car used, it came with one and I was only able to program one....previous owner lost the other two...I need to figure how to delete the other keys so I can program another

If it doesnt work for your particular model, there are other YT videos of other methods that may work instead. Have a search.
One correction, u said remove five time but u removed four times. You inserted five times and left in on 5th insertion.
This doesn't work on a 2005 Toyota Matrix. You can program that car's fob, but you have to take the key part to someone with the magic box that plugs into the diagnostic port.
Some people want as much as $100 to do that-but I shopped around and found a place that did it for $45.
Ebay has a 25$ Toyota magic box for people who want to do it themselves.

For a lot of more recent car (including some 2013+) you need to use the techstream software to add new key. Just search on amazon or ebay for mini vci, most ODBII cable come with the software almost ready to work. Just added 2 regular key to my car this way.

I think on the Matrix, this only works on the 2005 model, from what I read elsewhere. It does not work on the 2008.

So where do you get the key to program? Can you get a key that already has the things inside to be programmed. What if it's the second key they gave you but doesn't have a dot on it. This doesn't make it clear about all these things.

Transponder? I am trying to figure when you’d use this verses the instructions to use the buttons on your new key to lock and unlock doors, etc...

@@egpx35 It's not the same for every Toyota. It's been so long that I don't even remember the procedure I used for my car, so I'd have to look it up if I ever had to make a new key.
With some Toyotas, you need an electronic device that plugs into the diagnostic port.

@@egpx35 I would have to do the same thing you can do on the Internet to find out for your car. I don't know it offhand. As I mentioned, I don't even remember the procedure for the car I had. I remember it involved opening and closing the driver door more than once, and doing something with the key in the ignition.
