Another option to check first is Lowe's or Home Depot. I was going to pay a couple hundred bucks for an additional transponder key cut and programmed at a locksmith, but recently I was at Lowe's shopping around and asked them at the key center if they duped these type keys and sure enough they did. They had this huge computerized key machine and did it in a couple of minutes. Cost me $75 and works like a charm.

Some good advice. I had one of my keys stolen for a 2011 Mazda. The dealer wanted $270 for it. I just got a chipped key that did everything except remote unlocking and it was $167. So I used my 2nd FOB and used this key as a emergency spare. Also, RockAuto sells OEM key fobs for about 40-50% less than the dealer. Then just pay for the programming at a modern lock smith.

Locksmith here. VERY IMPORTANT! Make sure you get a final price over the phone. However if your key isn't turning in a lock or ignition, we may need to come out to assess whether it's the key being worn out or mis-cut or the lock failing, yet we can still give you estimates based on what we think the issues may range from and confirm them again in person before we put any tools to your vehicle. If you feel like you're being pressured, you're talking to someone at a call center, or they say they have to send the locksmith out and they only give you the trip cost, that's likely a scammer. They are all over the states and they get leads from call centers who get commission for referring these alleged locksmiths. The supposed locksmiths they send out charge whatever they want when they get there. It's best to familiarize yourself with a local locksmith before you need them in an emergency and get pressured into letting them send a guy out.
If you have any questions, I can try to answer them as best as possible or point you in the right direction.

2002 Toyota avalon 3.0l v6 xls with TOY43AT4 (C4) chip. When I bought the car it only came with the valet key and the dealership says the only solution is a new ECM, immobilizer, ignition switch and matching keys, but Toyota has discontinued them. Any suggestions? I'm located about 2 hours from Houston, TX, but willing to travel.

So true, had to go to Lowes department store with a coding key making machine. And the stealer ship wanted $390.
    I paid $45 at Lowes.

Yeah, Scotty gave totally wrong advice. If the key (including chip) can be duplicated at Walmart of Lowe's, that's where to go, NOT a locksmith. And his system of evaluating locksmiths is a cop-out too. Video get a thumb down.

Scotty, as usual you saved me money with this one...! I bought a 2002 Sebring used car and wanted a second key for my wife. Dealer quoted me $267 to make a new key. I found one on amazon for $8, cost me $4 to get the key cut, and $67 for the dealer to program the key. Total cost was $79 for the new key. Now since I have 2 keys for the ignition, I can easily add more by myself by only paying for the key and to get it cut. I saved almost $200! thanks big time!

As a former bonded locksmith & current independent tech, I totally agree with Scotty. Save your money & support you local locksmiths. Most will advertise their capibilities but only support licensed/certified (by the state in which you live) I will be certified/licensed in NC in 2018.

Most local locksmiths that work on automotive DO have a the capability to make chipped or proximity keys.
They can save you a lot of money and a lot of hassle if you go to a good locksmith.

    • @preferredlocksmith3843

You'd be surprised, most locksmiths usually always beat the dealer or local hardware store prices, and it never hurts to shop around and find out if they're cheaper or not. If you ever need it theres no obligation to just call and ask a price.

Scotty you are great. Totally truthful and knowledgeable. Was am a senior who was a mechanic when I was young. Became a successful contractor and was stupid enough to buy a 2007 Mercedes S600 for $153K. Sold after 6 years at a 73% loss not including repairs. Buy used. Did you say Toyota, yes a 1998 Camry. My neighbors thought I lost my money. I told them, I just listen to Scotty

Scotty. I love your show and I will never negative you. I watched your fix-a-flat video, and thought since my tires were ok (like yours) I put some in to stop the rim leak. Well it gave my car a terrible shimmy, and it cost a lot to have the fix a flat removed from my car. However. I am not mad because you saved me 100s with all your advice. The 100 bucks I am out because of repairs because I used fix a flat is no big deal, but I know how you like to save ppl money. in a emergency use it, but to correct a leaky rim. replace the rims, or just add air when needed. Maybe the old stuff worked, but the new stuff doesn't as far as long term. As always love your videos, and HAPPY ANNY!

Scotty, your aces. Having turned wrench’s for a lot of years and a Dr. degree in Common sense. I can say your information is extremely valuable to Joe and Jane driver. Here is a tip you may know about.
With the remote fabs transmitting a signal and all the scum bags using technology to steal cars today, if you wrap your fab in aluminum foil while not using it ( like when you go into the store or just away from the vehicle) it stops the signal and thieves that carry signal receivers in their pockets can’t get the wireless codes to steal your vehicle. Thumbs up to you sir.

Going to a locksmith sometimes has its issues as well, usually only one guy knows how, and they don’t do them often so, they may forget and things may take more time. Prices tend to be higher than other places as well. The best place perhaps to go is to find tow services that has locksmith services “Lock and tow.” Some will charge a flat price for as many keys made. So check around and then buy more than one set on eBay. My place charged $64 to cut two keys, program two keys and two remotes to open and close the door locks. All four were bought online for $15. I was quoted $200 at one locksmith. The place I went to also said that in her experience over the years, greater than 95% of the eBay keys worked if you buy from a reputable seller. Thanks Scotty for putting this video up. Saved me a ton.
