The meaning of the song Duel of the Fates in the lightsaber scene towards the end from the mouth of George Lucas' Padawan, Dave Filoni. "Filoni went on to discuss the prominent theme of fathers and sons that runs throughout the Star Wars saga, pointing out that Qui-Gon Jinn serves as a father figure to Anakin Skywalker in The Phantom Menace because he stands by the fact 'Jedi are supposed to actually care and love' at their core.
'He's fighting for Anakin, and that's why it's the Duel of the Fates,' Filoni said. "'It's the fate of this child. And depending on how this fight goes, his life is going to be dramatically different. So Qui-Gon loses, of course, so the father figure [is gone]. Because he knew what it meant to take this kid away from his mother when he had an attachment, and he's left with Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan trains Anakin, at first, out of a promise he makes to Qui-Gon, not because he cares about him. He's a brother to Anakin, eventually, but he's not a father figure. That's a failing for Anakin. He doesn't have the family that he needs.'"

    • @4everhealthwellness344
      @4everhealthwellness344 Год назад +10

@@kurtpflegl30 yes, if Qui Gon had survived and trained Anakin I don't think he would have been seduced by Palpatine to the Dark side. Qui Gon was the father figure Anakin needed and was the perfect one to train him. Obi wan was a great Jedi but very ill prepared to train even a normal Padawan let alone someone as powerful and potentially volatile as Anakin. I blame the Jedi council to a large degree for Anakin's fall. If Obiwan had just used Force speed to get through the force fields....he could have double teamed Maul in the reactor shaft room

@@4everhealthwellness344 If they ever get around to doing an animated what-if style series. I want "What if Qui-Gon lived" to be the first one they do. As you said, I don't think Anakin would have fallen to the darkside with Qui-Gon still there. Qui-Gon probably would have been on to what Palpatine was doing by the end of Attack of the Clones.

    • @justinmcgough3958
      @justinmcgough3958 Год назад +1

@@matthollands7771 Reminds me of a little comic someone made were the jedi council makes Anakin a master early on and everything seems to be going well but Yoda feels disturbed by whats going on. It's then that Yoda calls out what is supposed to happen and Windu replies back, questioning what's wrong about imagining what could've been. It then ends with Yoda waking up in his swamp home on Dagobah looking depressed as he looks out his window.
Really hits the feels. While Qui-Gon living would've been the best outcome there was still so many opportunities for the jedi council to lead Anakin on a good path. The Clone Wars show really digs into it, showing how much the Jedi have fallen with their obedience aligning moreso with the senate and chancellor than with their own teachings and the people of the republic.

While I was a bit disappointed with the prequels at the time for a variety of reasons, I never thought they were bad enough to warrant sending hate mail to George Lucas or accusing him of “raping my childhood” on blogs, message boards, and early social media. That’s just extreme behavior and I agree with you that they alienated him from making movies and made the rest of us genuine fans (especially those of us who saw the Original Trilogy in theaters) look like maniacs. @@mhill781 Yep, Exar Kun was the first Jedi Padawan to fall to the Dark Side due to his master Joruus C` Baoth`s negligence and atypically aloof nature even by Jedi standards. As you might expect, Baoth was haunted by guilt over his failures with Kun and unwitting role in the origins of the genocidal, Dark Side Sith Order to his last days. Indeed, his guilt was so intense that he deliberately cut himself off from the Force and denying himself the chance of becoming a Force Ghost. So yes "Last Jedi" haters, what Luke does in "Last Jedi" does have precedence in "Legends"! It was Kun who constructed the first double-bladed lightsaber.

I’m so happy you both enjoyed this. I saw this in the theater in June 1999. It was such an awesome experience. The pod race scene was especially fun.
Fun fact: a few months earlier in 1998, the first trailer for this movie aired in theaters before the Brad Pitt/Anthony Hopkins movie “Meet Joe Black”. Back then, there was no RUclips and movie trailers didn’t get posted on the Internet. You had to go to the theater to watch it.
Well, many “Star Wars” fans did just that. They bought tickets for “Meet Joe Black” just to see the trailer then they left and went home. LOL True story.

This is giving me flashbacks. Back in 99, the hype for this was un-fcking-believable. The screams and cheers that went up just at the start, when the logo showed up and the music kicked in. There were some people there that had been waiting 16 years to see Star Wars again in a theater. Some of us, like me, legal adults, had no memory of seeing Star Wars in a theater. What I absolutely appreciate the most from your reaction on this one is how open and positively receptive you two are to the character of Jar Jar.
When this first came out, the truly toxic purist fans absolutely HATED the character because they viewed him as kiddiefying the franchise, there by grading it. The outrage and bullying was so bad from the OT fanbase that it nearly drove actor behind the character, Ahmed Best, to commit suicide. Thankfully he didn't and I had the honor of meeting him in person at a convention recently to tell him to his face how he did absolutely nothing wrong and thank him for playing one of my favorite characters as a kid. So God bless you both for being WAY better minded about him than too many were.

I'm SUPER SUPER SUPER glad you're finally getting started with the prequels!
I have a connection to this series
my birthday is May 5 and this first prequel AND the third were released on May 19, two weeks after I turned 5 and 11 respectively the other three were released in May as well so I act like this saga and I have a bond that is absolutely special but especially the prequels since I grew up with them they made a big movie fan and buff
Qui-Gon Jinn is a favorite character of mine, Jedi and in general he was one of the most spiritual and noble ever seen in a Jedi robe he was the representation of what Jedi were supposed to be
By the way, those "rat-tails" that Obi-Wan and Anakin wear are traditional symbols in the Jedi Order that says this person is an apprentice, a Padawan learner they also wear shoulder-length braids on their right side if the students have hair
Padme is a badass character, in more ways than one for sure She let loose her inner fire to free her people and she'll continue to do so throughout the rest of the story
I'm really happy you embraced this movie without a negative thought of any kind on the side. The critics and older fans roasted this mercilessly from everything to Jar Jar Binks to Jake Lloyd (Anakin's actor), the political backdrop and the CGI, which still holds up well today. Seeing your open minds relaxed me.

He came back with a really cool design for this female character with this kind of dreadlock kind of reddish hair and very menacing. You guys should react to The Crow (1994) starring Brandon Lee, he is Bruce Lee son.
Brandon Lee tragically got shot on the set of the movie due to a prop gun with a piece of left over blank bullet residue, the crew thought Brandon was playing joke when scene was over and when he was laying on the floor he wasn’t moving but when they got closer they saw it was serious and rushed Brandon Lee to the hospital, the doctors did everything they could but it was too late Brandon Lee passed away at the age of 28.
Some scenes aren’t Brandon it’s his body double Chad Stahelski, Chad is the director of the John Wick franchise. The director of The Crow Alex Proyas had too cut and add new scenes for the movie because of happened to Brandon. They also CGI Brandon Lee face on too Chad face and the makeup artist made a face mask of Brandon face for chad to wear. All scenes were they don’t show Brandon Lee face it’s Chad
Brandon was supposed get married to his fiancée Eliza Hutton after The Crow finished filming.
After Brandon was supposed to get married Brandon was going to a sign a two-year deal to continue The Crow storyline. The Crow is comic book/graphic novel created by James O'Barr.
Before entering the Marines, O'Barr's fiancée Beverly had been killed by a drunk driver.
While living in Berlin in 1981, O'Barr began work on his comic The Crow as a means of dealing with his personal tragedy.
O'Barr was further inspired by a Detroit newspaper account of the murder of a young couple over a $20 engagement ring.
In The Crow, the protagonist, Eric and his fiancée Shelly are murdered by a gang of criminals. Eric then returns from the dead guided by a supernatural crow, to hunt their killers.
After his discharge from the Marines O'Barr continued his painting and illustration as well as doing various odd jobs.
The Crow sat on a shelf for seven years but at last he found a publisher with Gary Reed of Caliber Press.
The first miniseries was published in 1989. The Crow has since sold more than 750,000 copies worldwide.
This movie has the best soundtrack of all time according to Rolling Stones magazine, Revolver Magazine etc. and the movie score is amazing as well.

Liam Neeson (Qui-Gon) honestly carries this movie so hard. Among a lot of cheesy and bad acting parts(which plagues a lot of the prequels), his character turned out amazing and believable. Episode I is really underrated though, I think it might be the best of the prequels.. though most say Episode III is.
Edit: forgot to say that of the prequels, does anyone else think that the lightsaber duels in Episode I are the best? or at least the most believable? I think a lot of the duels after Episode I get a little too over the top. The ones with Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Darth Maul are just the right level, a lot of action but not completely absurd either!

    • @bassmunk

I absolutely agree about the duels. The "duel of the fates" is the best there is! The choreographer said that he wanted each move to be a check mate. That every defense to an attack was the only defense possible. As a kind of show of the elite level of skill the Jedi and Sith operate at. And it comes across! They're super tense!
And yes, Liam Neeson is the perfect Jedi! I was sad when he died only cuz we wouldn't see him again. His demeanor is perfect for a Jedi.

Qui Gon became my favorite Jedi when I was kid. Watched Episode I like a dozen times while it was in theaters and the Dual of the Fates was my favorite until Episode III. George Lucas’ thought process of having the prequel battles be more epic and choreographed makes so much sense as well, because this was supposed to be the end of the Prime era of the Jedi.
Episode III took the top spot for me when it came out because that battle (you know the one I’m talking about) was perfect. It lived up to decades of waiting and buildup, and met all the expectations, but Duel of the Fates is a very close second and was hard to surpass.

And yes, the Episode I lightsaber duel is the best in the prequels. The other two duels are just so twirly and flashy-there didn't seem to be any weight or power behind the swings.

The one thought I always had was that they talked about how Anakin was the "Chosen one". Suppose to bring "balance to the Force". There's only two Sith, and it seems like the Jedi are in control. So I feel like him turning evil did balance the force.

Many believe Qui-Gon to be a father figure to Anakin and had he not died, the story may have had a very different outcome. Obi-Wan was more of an older brother to Anakin.
Can't wait for your guys reactions during the next 2 in the trilogy!!!

Only the 2 Disney + series "Star Wars - The Clone Wars - The Final Season", and "The Bad Batch" take place during, then continuing after Episode III.

So glad you both enjoyed it!
I watched it first run in a packed theater the
    day it opened.
On a LARGE screen, the pod racing scene was EPIC.
You both are in for a treat with the next Episodes 2 and 3. The movies become more complex and dark in story and tone.
If you haven't already seen them,
after you finish these two prequels, please add "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story", and "Solo" to your Star Wars movies list.
Rogue One is a prequel to Episode 4: A New Hope
Solo is Han Solo's origin story.
Rogue One is a GEM of a visual STUNNER.
Next to The Empire Strikes Back, it's my
very very favorite Star Wars movie.

Obi-Wan does feel conflicted. Essentially Qui-Gon was giving up Obi-Wan for Anakin as he hadn't discussed promoting him prior to meeting Ani so he felt slighted before the battle. Also, when a padawan becomes a knight, they normally continue on missions for years before taking a learner and becoming a master themselves so he has to fight his own feelings of inadequacy while teaching Anakin.

The braid is a symbol of their status as a Pasadena apprentice, jedi eschew and forfeit any and all material possessions - the sole exception being that braid, which gets severed as part of the ceremony of “graduation” to Jedi. It is the ONE THING in their whole lives their code permits them to keep…they EARNT it.
