      The sword from harry potter is a based on a real sword though it is hilarious how late 12h century Hunting sword is depicted as an 8th or 9th century Anglo-Saxon weapon by JK Rowling. the one depicted is a 16th Hunting swords that are basically enlarged single handed Poignard daggers existed.
      Mainly used by nobility or merchant class in social hunt these swords were common but were used in hunting not to mention self-defence as they can take down a boar or a wolf so a man is easy enough.
      No recorded instance of it's use in war that I know of; but I'm sure someone used a hunting sword in a pinch.
      Very much French style of hunting sword though a tad to ornate so a 9/10.
      Not my choice of side arm but they were a thing!

      You should know Poniards are the grandfather of fighting knifes & both with training are more lethal then a sword.
      Hunting swords of the Poniard or knightly dagger shape enlarged are very much lethal though often to ostentatious for my liking.
      I prefer a large long dagger to about just over a cubit in length maximum of about 20 odd inches; give or take.
      Honestly 8 to 28 inch blade is optimal for close quarter fighting so a long dagger to short sword range & a hunting sword is typically 3 feet long in blade hitting that point of to long for close quarters & not long enough for duel or mounted.
      Good against a wild animal as it will go deep enough with some clearance from the user & creature in question but I rather a lugged spear or something that can cleave like a kopis or kurki.
      lopping of parts is an immediate effect unlike piecing-plunging blades as that shived will struggle but no limbs or head from a hacking chopper then you get no complaints.

    Conan’s sword was a one-handed sword for a giant king/lord of ancient Atlantis, from whom his people descended. Note how much larger the skeleton is than Conan. It harkens back to the story his father told him. He just requires both hands to wield it effectively because the Cimmerians are greatly diminished in stature from their ancient ancestors.

    Regarding the light sabre I think the entire concept we cannot rate in this world right now.
    I think that how it's supposed to work is that its heat is only present inside the "blade" area, that some kind of force field is containing most of the energy so you don't burn anything until you bring it inside this force field. The force field would also explain the impact part.

    • @TheKarmak
      @TheKarmak 4 месяца назад +11

      One version that explained lightsabers (before Shitney ruined it all) said that a lightsaber was very energy efficient, that all energy and heat was redirected and repurposed into the battery. The Only way that energy was lost was if the blade came into contact with something physical enough to agitate the forcefield and cause that part to release the energy. Meaning radiation heat and energy would not be an issue at all for the wielder unless they were stupid enough to use a lightsaber without training and cut themselves with it.
      If you take away the magic of a lightsaber then I agree that the entire concept of it becomes unratable. The technology is non existent. Can not rate with real world logic if it does not even have a base of existence in reality.

    • @jonathanjones635
      @jonathanjones635 3 месяца назад +4

      you actually wouldnt even nead to worry about heat that much if it isnt actually the heat cutting things.
      So imagine instead of plasma or lasers or something, the lightsaber blade was made of say 10 or so individual nanomolecular collumns of phase locked photons. By having 10, you could creat a recursive sistem that prevented interfierance allowinng it to deflect photonic radiation and possible even bind against other light sabers.
      If what I said is confusing, imagine green lantern's hard light constructs, but instead of a gatling gun or sometning, he creates columns of hard light the width of a single photon and just starts swinging them around slicing throught everything.
      Have ten of those arranged in a conical shape and give it a tad more juice to radiat some heat and now you have a weildable weapon that explains every observable atribute of standard lightsabers while ALSO being able to explain exoctic sabers such as whips.
      It would also lend more creedence to the use of nonomolecularly edged vibroblades as both a precursing technology, and a training tool to introduce people to the concept of the lightsaber.

    It's been a _long_ time since I read anything Conan, but if I recall his Atlantean sword was originally a greatsword, but the blade had broken so it was reshaped and rehilted to be an arming sword. But the Atlanteans were also in the range of 2 to 3 meters tall, so for modern Cimmerians like Conan who, although giants of men, are much smaller in stature than the ancient Atlanteans, it's still a big two-hander.
    The starmetal sword Conan used against the Serpent-men in the 1992-93 animated series "Conan the Adventurer" was quite similar in general design to Lion-O's Sword of Omens, though.
    Lightsabers canonically (or perhaps not anymore, thanks to Disney) do have a force field around the blade. In one of the novels (I'm fairly sure it was "Shadows of the Empire", which takes place between "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi") when Luke was on Tatooine building his lightsaber, the first thing he did after igniting it was to make sure there wasn't any heat coming from the blade, because if there was then that meant there was a problem with the containment field, and fixing it would entail taking the entire saber apart and starting over.

      I've never thought of this before, but now that you mention it I'm interested too. Sadly, I think the above replies might be correct a lot of the time, but as a matter of course there were instances of soldiers and/or leaders in older times trying to avoid unnecessary killing. One point Shad has made repeatedly (especially in his older videos) is that medieval people were just people, and therefore would think about and attempt the same things we do today.

    • @Apathy293
      @Apathy293 4 месяца назад +29

      I think the biggest concern for clearing a room in medieval times would have been someone hiding around the corner. Bows weren't really used in enclosed areas and crossbows were rather expensive, so it's not like modern clearing where every angle is potentially dangerous. Clearing a castle, a smart defender will try to bottleneck you in a hallway rather than lay an ambush in a bedroom. In a hut or hovel you didn't have to worry about projectiles. If you could enter shield first you could protect yourself from a surprise attack, but if you were lightly equipped, the biggest concern was likely right when you enter the room.
      Also, I saw the same kind of modern room clearing in the most recent Robin Hood remake. watching a group of people walking with bows at full draw as if they were holding M4s was so ridiculous I stopped watching.

If my torch can be cold enough to handle barehanded i think that in the few thousands years of technological advances in the starwars universe that lightsabers would be able to contain the heat well enough to handle like how the jedi do in the movies.

    Blizzard actually had replicas of Frostmourne made, if you ever wanted to find it for a reference. The real reason swords in games are so thick comes down to one thing: pixels. In the 90s and 00s, resolution wasn't the greatest. They wanted a design the players would want to get in the game; so they were all designed as thick boys. That, and Warcraft was originally modeled to be Warhammer; but the deal fell through with Games Workshop, so they made Warcraft.

      Tabletop minatures have the same issue. Real-life accurate models lead to really small features. First of all, it's just hard to manufacture cheaply. Then, it's not easy to see identifying traits on an army of tiny models when they aren't exaggerated excessively. Lastly, if thin, unsupported bits like swords were the proper width when scaled to a 6 inch plastic minature, then the thing would snap off from the force of gravity alone before we even talk about being jostled by human hands.
      This is the main reason why minature companies like GW have utterly absurd proportions to weapons/armor/etc.

    • @xBrokenMirror2010x
      @xBrokenMirror2010x 4 месяца назад +7

      Even today resolution issues still exist for properly proportioned swords. As the camera zooms out, at a more reasonable distance you might be, the edge of a blade could easily get anti-aliased out of existence even at 1440p. Most games are still made for 1080p in mind too, which we had in the 00's, they just weren't super common. I have a VGA 4:3 Monitor from like 2000 that actually has enough pixels that it is on the verge of "HD" standard, which is 720p.
      At 1080p, you NEED to have way more thickness to make the weapons look good.
      There are also concerns about performance, the smaller and more detailed something is the more vertexes you need to make it. Having a thicker blade is simply easier to model, render, and texture.

    In defense of the Sword of Gryffindor, it is a sword of Goblin make, so it being short makes sense.
    Edit: Someone in my replies suggest it might also have resizing magic applied to it, which fits why it looks like a toothpick the first time we see it, then a respectable length for a sword the next.

    • @Apathy293
      @Apathy293 4 месяца назад +14

      There is lore saying it was made for him, though there is also lore saying he stole it from goblins. Godrick was always described as tall and strong, and he was supposedly a good swordsman, so it would be odd for someone of his physical stature to commission a sword so small and light a child could comfortably use it, instead of something that lets him use his reach advantage.

    • @revanninja
      @revanninja 4 месяца назад +15

      @@Apathy293 Actually the sword WAS his. In the Goblin society when they make something the person who orders it only owns it as long as they live when they die ownership reverts to the goblin maker. The goblins see him not allowing the sword to come back to them as him stealing it. So both sides are correct from their culture views.
      As for it the Sword is also magical when it kills something stronger then the sword it absorbs that strength hence why it gained the venom. . Resizing magic is fairly common in the books so its not unreasonable that shrinking or growing the blade might be a magic that blade has. And for a good swordsman that is a deadly thing being able to magically adjust the length and reach of your blade at will. So the sword might adjust its self normally to best fit its user at the time and Harry doesnt shrink or grow the blade simply because he is unaware of that magic on it.

      But it could be a nice theory for the films specifically

    • @LeonDOrfano
      @LeonDOrfano 4 месяца назад +3

      To add a bit of context, Godric Gryffindor was born around the end of the Viking Age, so, if he commissioned the sword, we can assume it was at least similar to a sword of his age, maybe a bit more similar to an arming sword with Anglo-Saxon flavour in the ornaments since is stated he was a skilled duelist but he didn't use a shield like was common in that age (this because he was a wizard and because Rowling is not a historian, so she don't know how things worked at those times, she has a stereotypical view of the middle ages I think), so maybe we can speculate he had a hilt designed to be more protective than the typical "viking sword"
      Obviously this is all a fun speculation based on the historical data we own plus the (potentially historical-lacking) lore given by the author.

The Handle despite being round actually does fit well in the hand and doesnt turn easily I think its because of the spiral cut on the handle. The Guard is big but lifted enough swinging it doesnt impede my motions and its shape does mean it can actually be used as a guard.
      The One I have is closer to the soul reaver 2 version in both length and how the skull guard is set up. Handle is longer by my design so it can be used 2 handed but weight and balance its not bad swinging one handed.

    The lightsaber depends on how it works, what type of media is transferring the energy and such. You can hold your hand right next to a laser that can cut steel without feeling anything. Also an acetylene torch straight up in the air doesn't give much heat to the sides, it's when you start cutting steel or welding that the heat builds up and reflects back to you.
    A piece of red hot iron radiates(notice radiates) much more heat as it's much more massive than the flame on a torch.

    Especially since if the technology were advanced enough to provide a special electromagnetic force field around it in order for it to clash with other objects as a physical saber, they could likely also have a force field that could protect the wielder. (in fact in Star Wars lore)especially the video games(which some are no longer canon but still are important) they have personal deflector shields that attach to the belt or clothing of the wearer which can protect against heat.

    Actually, I just had a thought on the topic of the lightsaber: I think everyone has been categorizing them the wrong way as a 'beam of raw heat and plasma'. In terms of Star Wars lore the precursor to the lightsaber was the vibroblade, i.e. a high-frequency blade. Logistically speaking the lightsaber should just be an evolution of that concept, that is to say a containment field which excites and vibrates atoms at such a rapid rate that they are able to tear things apart on contact the way a high-frequency blade would. This would generate heat, but not in the manner that everyone keeps expecting them to. They also aren't melting objects or igniting them, they are shredding them on the atomic level while also igniting their surroundings on a smaller scale.
    This would also explain why they are able to clash with other lightsabers, as it is effectively just vibration hitting vibration and being deflected.

    Lightsabers are kinda hard because the way you're describing it, it's more like a Beamsaber from Gundam with a high heat and a field to maintain the blade shape for clashing, but a Lightsaber from Star Wars, the way the blade extends from the tip and can cut through objects, it reminds me more of an energy chainsaw where the blade is more like a fountain and the direction of the flow is 360 degrees flowing from the center and cascading down and back to the grip so the flow of the energy, or plasma or whatever cuts in all directions rather than burns. Not to say the lightsaber can't generate a lot of heat too as the friction of the particle flow could cause it to generate a lot of heat when it comes into contact with solid objects but otherwise it's a "cool" blade when it is in open air. Of course when you look into more fantastical blade shapes in Star Wars like the Darksaber you introduce new issues as the blade isn't an elongated stick but more of an actual blade shape but that;s a different can of worms at that point.

    One thing that is not mentioned or known, no judgement, the magnetic shielding containing the plasma, also contains the heat energy. A properly functioning lightsaber is 100% efficient, only releasing its energy when it comes in contact with matter denser than air, or water if so designed. The clash-lock with another blade is theoretically due to the magnetic shielding, kind of like a gyro and fantastically because of the crystals being alive.

    In terms of the lightsaber, they're supposed to be a closed circuit, as in they don't radiate any heat. In other words, they're only hot on contact and not on proximity. Taking that in mind I can see them at a 10/10.

    • @valrond
      @valrond 4 месяца назад +16

      Agreed. If you use the canon of the movies, they don't do any heat or require any gear. Taking out the magic means the force, so no bolt deflection or telekinesis to throw or pick up, but as it is in the movies, it will cut through any other weapon or armor and not need anything else. So yeah, 10/10.

      that one hurts me: at first glance it is a borderline functional weapon in a movie but the more you look at the details the worse it gets until you get to the abomination that is it's construction: we get a mostly-full look and short description of how it is put together during the movie and a full one in the supporting materials and that thing is a piece of trash even by *movie-prop* standards! (as in the standards for the props themselves) the hilt and blade all come apart into several pieces, the blade is in 3 or 4 sections (different in different sources) that just slide together and snap into place by pushing it over a pressure-cushioned ridge while the several pieces of the hilt assembly are all held together _and_ connected to the blade by a single pin with the same push-and-click fitting method. you can't even say "because magic" with this one either because the magic system in the setting is a magic-acts-like-energy type system, this sword would be worse than picking a random stick to enchant let alone actually doing something creative/practical.
