Shad is also a climate change denier
Hey, if you need any practice ahead of your duel, hit me up. I, like Shad, am also a dedicated LARPer and am more than willing to show you all the fancy tricks to beat him in 1v1 combat. Offer stands, just need to make your way over to Washington state first. I await your call.
I've been noticed! I am 4REAL bro. I used to fight 3+ days a week for years. I've been quoted saying 'Musashi's 5 Rings is my bible.' I can be the Princess Peach to your Mario. I'm a WAY bigger nerd than Shad is.
Also, love the DF theme stinger, LET'S GOOOOOOOO
The people who watch this guy's channel should have known he was a because the guy was walking around with swords and dressed up in armor from the Dark Ages. There are only two kinds of people who study history the ones who want to learn and stop it from happening again and the ones who wanted to happen again because they want to be making history. Knights are famous for massacring Muslims and a whole bunch of other innocent people.

Justice for Koji Kondo
I love how Shad's fans kept saying his response was some epic debunking of Jack when it's one of the most whiny, mean-spirited and juvenile response videos I've ever seen in my life.
Saying "bowser is a simp now" unironically as if that hasn't been his singular, primary character trait for almost 40 years now is insane.
It like complaining darth Vader as a space fascist in the recent Star Wars mini series he in. Like that the point
That's like saying Eggman became a narcissist after the movies came out? Have you played the games?
Robot Chicken made that joke when I was in college, and it was worn out even then. The only thing that changed is the terminology.
Actually he was never a simp. He was kidnapping Princess Peach the means to an end, and that end was to lure out his arch-nemesis, Mario. His role was previously held by Donkey Kong.
Bowser has never expressed any sort of sympathy, empathy, or romantic leanings towards Princess Peach.
@@Mygg_Jeager Paper Mario 1 & 2, Super Paper Mario, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Odyssey and several other Mario Titles disagree with you on that one...
All of this is because Shad didn't initially recognize Peach's mario kart Wii outfit. I think it's precisely why his reaction is so agitated. He has been exposed as a fake gamer, the worst dishonor.
Not only that, he posted cringe on main
I watched the review it was a 3 guys at a round table. 2 people hated Mario movie and didn't get all of the references. 1 guy did and loved it. It wasn't Shad 2-3 spent 2 hours saying how the movie sucked. Wierd that the movie didn't suck it was just a fun movie. Edit Shad said he wasn't a gamer at most he played a little bit of the NES games.
@Calvin I aim to please
He's stared into the abyss of anti-SJW politics for too long and the abyss stared back. He needs a break from political stuff and stick to his history and fentasy lessons.
@fakegeek5462 he also made a stupid video called:is it woke or not" anyone who unironically makes that title is a grifter and dumbass
"Girls love to be weak and get saved. They will always prefer this."
"My daughter would have absolutely loved seeing how cool and strong Peach is, but she isn't allowed to enjoy that."
Galax brain right there.
Also when he says that he's overlooking something really obvious: if you want to be saved, it means that you're in a situation where you need it. Does he think that women wish to be in danger, just to be saved? He thinks that someone would wish to deal with the lifelong repercussions of a damaging experience in order to yearn for a hero who could never come?
Kinda sad that by knowing how my mormon uncle thinks and acts I'm honestly not surprised when Shad says this sort of stuff.
@@MaterialMenteNo I think it's more that he believes that women being endangered and in unsafe circumstances is a natural occurrence that cannot and should not be questioned. Women must suffer so men can save them, ignoring that the danger that women are facing is men.
@@CitBox good point. Bad dude takes the poor lady and good dude needs to save her, ignoring how the very idea that a girl/woman is something that can just change owner and be ok is the very motor of the violence.
@@MaterialMenteNo idk what Shad meant, but I think a good phrasing would be: Women want to feel that IF they were in danger, they could be saved. (whereas men want to feel that they could save themselves) This ties into the (supposed or not) desire of women to have, e.g. a strong shoulder to lean and cry on. Those are obviously broad generalizations, but I think it's quite telling that for example the philosophy of stoicism appeals almost exclusively to men.
Cannot get over the lunacy of Shad claiming that most guys would sooner save a hot princess than their brother. Was everything okay growing up, Shad?
No, he's Mormon.
Even worse is that he actually has a brother (actually multiple brothers, I think.).
Like I could perhaps see an only child make that comment (I as an only child wouldn't but y'know, I could see people who never experienced having a sibling think that). But the fact that Shad said that while he has brothers really is something.
I suppose the fact that he is into AI art while (one of) his brother(s) Jazza is an artist and that claim could be interpreted together.
@@gokbay3057I envy your naive perspective. Or maybe you just happen to be so lucky. I've seen enough men being ignored by other men for a possibility of getting down to something.

Tbf to Shad, in his earlier videos where he covered Fantasy, History, Hema and Historical weaponry his personal ideals and beliefs were pretty well hidden, as someone that started following him for that kind of content, it's been really weird to see him get sucked into the culture wars nonsense.
I guess it was his ego that dragged him into it too, he seems to think he is an authority on everything he does, he criticised Elden Ring's worldbuilding because he is a "writer" because he wrote a weird, creepy and boring fanfiction novel. He promoted AI art because he is apparently at a level of a "professional artist" despite his brother Jazza an actual professional artist, with one of the largest art youtube channels saying he obviously isn't.

About 10 minutes into this, I was wondering what Shad's opinion of Shrek would be... Where Princess Fiona spends half the film saving Shrek and Donkey from trouble, and ultimately chooses her own fate at the end regardless of the role society wants her to fit into.

As a man who spent spent much of my childhood in a make believe world pretending to be a knight, I can safely say that rescuing damsels in distress was the absolute last thing I wanted. Because damsels were girls and girls had cooties.

@@enzoarayamorales7220 Or in Mario terms, "Slay princess, fuck that dragon!!!"
I equally wanted to be a knight and a witch and fight dragons and piss off gods. But I guess playing D&D with my friends I should just make my character a damsel that needs rescuing lmao. "sorry guys I can't help out in combat, I don't want to seem like a girlboss, a bigot manchild on the internet might get offended"
Given Shad’s obsession with knighthood and his presumption to know what women want better than they do themselves, I’m reminded of one of my favourite Arthurian stories, “The Tale of the Loathsome Maiden”.
Sir Gawain is riding through the woods when he comes to a bridge guarded by a Black Knight (sound familiar?) who challenges him to a duel and easily bests him, but withholds the final blow. He tells Gawain that he’ll be back in a year to give him that final blow, unless he can tell him the one thing every woman wants the most. Gawain goes on his way and asks every woman he meets what she wants the most, but they each give him a different answer. Finally on the last day of the year he meets a hideous old hag, who says she’ll tell him the answer to the Black Knight’s riddle if he’ll agree to marry her the next day. Not seeing any other option Gawain agrees, and she tells him that what every woman wants most is to decide for herself what she wants without a man deciding for her. The next day the Black Knight returns and Gawain gives him his answer, and he congratulates Gawain and lets him go. But before he does he says, “You know the answer to the riddle, but do you truly understand it?” That evening Gawain goes reluctantly to his wedding with the horrible hag, but when they retire to their bedchamber and she removes her wedding veil, he’s surprised to discover that she’s really beautiful underneath it. She tells him she was cursed by the Black Knight when she refused to marry him, so that she’s beautiful half the day and ugly the other half, and that the curse can only be broken by a man who truly understands the answer to the Black Knight’s riddle. She asks Gawain if he would rather she was beautiful at night when they’re together, or by day when other people will see her. But Gawain, finally understanding the answer to the riddle, asks her what she wants. The curse is broken and the maiden becomes beautiful permanently, and she and Gawain live happily together.
The funny thing is, this story is hundreds of years old, but if it was written today Shad would say it was “woke”.
I almost expected a more negative outcome given the period. But that sounds wholesome indeed.
Sir Gawain was a real one💯
I'll be putting this on my wall! this is beautiful! QwQ

Nightmare nightmare nightmare nightmare
I shudder to think of how he'd treat his own daughter once she gets old enough to date. I see an estranged dad in her future if his mindset doesn't change for the better. Either that or a brainwashed woman in the likes of Girl Defined (and that's the WORST case scenario)

Never met a fundie that didn't abuse their kids, and his main charachter in his book is a pedo with thousands of canonical victims....
@@dminasweater4868 I was raised in a fundie household as a lesbian. All I can say is that it wasn’t fun. There wasn’t s*xual or physical abuse, but they were shitty people. Gaslighting, emotional abuse, and backhanded compliments were very common. Especially after I came out. In fact, it stopped being passive aggressive after I came out. I also wasn’t allowed to go to therapy, unless it was counseling with their incredibly homophobic church counselor.
@Reed5016 Good thing you didn't go. when I took my father up on that I was tortured with fists and pliers as a form of conversion therapy in front of the congregation. They wanted to quote "exorcise the demon's of perversion and faggotry" I was 12.
I cannot get over the idea of people being upset that the Mario movie featured power-ups. It's, like, the most iconic part of the games. The thing that people know about Mario is that he eats mushrooms and gets more powerful, or that he grabs a star and then he's invincible for a little bit. Like, I don't know what game they thought they were playing, but every Mario game has power-ups
Also, the film was basically structured like a video game playthrough. Mario fails over and over again because that's the player experience. Games are no fun if you can speedrun them on your first try. And Peach being perfect is because she's literally the tutorial. All that perfection still didn't help her after that. It's Mario who comes to the rescue.
Smart writing, fun worldbuilding, internal consistency, and it just goes _whooosh_ right over their heads.
Exactly! Mario’s canonical story form is Mario having consumed a mushroom! They don’t put small Mario on the cover of anything.
And every mainline game that I personally know of, except for Lost Worlds and Doki Doki panic, introduces some new powerup to mess about with, with some new spin on the core mechanics. Fire flower, tanuki, frog, raccoon, p-wing, skip cloud, music box, warp whistle, hammer bros, cape feather, the wing, metal, and phase caps...even the GB titles gave him a superball in Mario Land 1 and flapping rabbit ears in Mario Land 2.
Maybe it slowed down in later games? I wouldn't know, I haven't played past SM64, but I do remember he had a friggin' water jetpack in Sunshine.
@@JJ-qo7th Ice Flowers, Penguin Suits, Mini Mushrooms, Spring Mushrooms, Bee Suits, Cloud Flowers, Cat Suits, a duplicating cherry thing are all new since 2000 I'm pretty sure. It's a franchise about the power-ups and how they make the game easier
So, wait, let me get this straight - they are mad about Mario not being portrayed as a traditional hero, then they are mad about Mario using powerups... but... Every single "traditional" hero uses powerups. You know, the trials and tribulations they go through?? Luke goes through training! And he receives a lightsaber! Freaking karate kid goes through training, wax on wax off! And then he gets stronger and wins! ALL marvel heroes go through powerups, bitten by a spider, or building a nano suit with a nuclear reactor in the chest, or getting an axe instead of a hammer - this argument makes no sense! The Traditional Hero Journey is when a single guy goes out into the wild and Learns A Lot Of Stuff! With all these mental gymnastics you'd think he'd be a ninja by now, let alone knight lmao

@@marocat4749 Skallagrim is very chill, yeah. And honestly, people who actually spend time researching medieval stuff and doing reenactment and all that really tend to not like Shad, because a lot of the stuff he says ist just stupid.
I feel like men like Shad don't understand why a lot of young girls want to be princesses. It's not because they want to be helpless and stuck in a tower. It's more about being rich enough to afford all these nice clothes and having a certain amount of authority and power. Even the being saved element has a bit this in it because a princess is important enough to be defended against harm more than a peasant woman. It is a feminine appropriate power fantasy in a world were other power fantasies for girls are looked down on and not allowed.
Young girls do not want to be princesses solely to be the helpless damsel to make boys feel like heroes. They want to be princesses because they want to be rich and important. The pretty dresses are part of the being rich part.
Edit: I noticed I typed out feminism because of auto correct when I meant feminine. It is fixed now.
yeah, that makes sense. no one wants to be helpless and just treated as an accessory in someone else's story, but most of us want to be important and have power
Yep he/them cannot see the perspective differing from their own, the female side of the knight and princess dynamic. They confuse their perspective for hers, thinking her desire begins and ends at the saving, when for women it extends into the "being valued" just as the knight side isn't about the slaying of the dragon, it's REALLY about the glory and admiration/value afterwards.
In both ways, they are stopping their analysis early and confusing the act for the accomplishment.
(Which I theorize means they are still "questing" for the act, and have not lived the glory of accomplishment. Kind of sad but also not really their fault that their conservative culture set them up to seek a value that is so outdated, opportunities to enact that value are incredibly rare. Plus the patriarchal society assumptions that only certain, "worthy" men get to DO the act, and therefore the act itself is rarified as is the reward they all worship. It's literally the opposite of an egalitarian worldview, trying to withhold and throttle universal happiness + peace to dole it out only for "good boy" behaviour.
These men (and women) are starved then thrown a scrap and told it's a feast, and they have to thank their abusers for the privilege. Extremely disheartening that they haven't realized they are being abused and instead dream of being the abuser.
This is what we get when we worship the heros journey and totally disregard the following arcs of the king and mage, not to mention freezing women in the flat Maiden arc forever.
As someone who loves princesses, YES! You hit the nail on the head!
The ultimate fantasy for women? Personal agency.
To me it seems the princess fantasy comes from more for being safe and having power than wanting to be saved.

The funniest moment to me is Shad in the clip about how Disney is trying to raise your kids...
"To fight back, teach your kids to love who they are..."
Then he realizes how that is exactly what Disney is doing and immediately tries to course correct with, "teach boys to love being boys and girls to love being girls."
But what if your child doesn't fit the gender norms Shad? Should you not teach them to love who they are still?
There's a Disney movie with a gay kid in it... he spent time trying to figure out his feelings for another boy... So... Yes.
No that would be a sin of the highest degree and they would burn in hell for it plus some other mormon bullshit I guess.
And he _is_ talking about the same Disney that ran roughshod over The Owl House’s production budget and schedule, just so we’re clear?
Our government - Hungary, central eastern Europe - is openly, disgustingly, loudly transphobic, homophobic, and christian conservative, and listening to Shad was like listening to my own prime minister Orban Viktor. "Narual law is a man and a woman making babies" no other kind of family structure or partnership is acceptable in their eyes and they are adamant about protecting children from LGBT agendas and "woke/trans lobby", seeking out enemies wherever they can - meanwhile THEY are the ones dismantling the education system, the healthcare system, they are the ones pardoning p*dophile criminals (just now in 2024)... So this was honestly really wild to watch, I did not expect a guy who I started following for historical accuracy to turn into this absolute bigot. I too am sad for his daughter
He's treating Mario like he's Luke Skywalker when he's not.
Mario is Mickey Mouse, he's Popeye the Sailor Man, he's a goofy cartoon character in a slapstick routine. Mario was never meant to be a cool knight on a quest, he was deliberately modeled after old school cartoon protagonists. A character like Mickey mouse isn't cool or competent, he gets flattened and burned and beat but he always bounces back and tries his hardest to get the girl. A character like Popeye is more tough and strong but even he suffers ludicrous injuries when competing against Bluto. Popeye also iconically has his own power up in the form of spinach which gives the incredible strength needed to beat Bluto and save Olive Oyle. In the games, Mario can die in all sorts wacky ways but is able to pop back up and try again and the games are built around using any wild trick you can pull off to reachcthe goal.
Shad is so obsessed with this Joseph Campbell valiant hero bullshit that he can't understand what a fucking cartoon is.
The original Donkey Kong was supposed to be a Popeye game but they couldn't get the license so they changed the characters. Popeye became Jumpman, Olive Oyl became Pauline, Bluto became Donkey Kong and spinach became hammers. Mario literally started off as a knockoff Popeye.
Was just gonna say, has he seen any of the mario cartoons? He's always been portrayed like just a goofy, often schlubby plumber

I start to suspect that broader Mario lore may not be perfectly consistent
I know that on the surface this guy’s tantrum over “woke” Mario is funny, but as a woman this kind of phenomenon almost terrifies me. That there’s a growing subsection of men that genuinely don’t see me as a person, to the point that any piece of media that doesn’t portray women in the narrow box they think we deserve to be in is scary to me.

Yes! This makes me extra sad because I know my father is engaging with this anti woke thoughts and debating anything nerdy with him is just hell. Because it fundamentally shows that he thinks I don't deserve to see myself as a hero, because these types of characters will always be mary sues and girl bosses, will never be genuine enough. It's frustrating to adore and see myself as a character that my father just dismisses.
It is scary, but if it's any consolation these people are mostly grifters who don't actually believe half the things they say. The instant they meet a conservative woman they suddenly go all quiet in order to not scare her away. They are sad and isolated people
What’s funny to me about him constantly referencing Mario as “traditional male hero” is that he’s not lol. Mario’s usually is depicted as fairly short and round, has a higher pitch voice, and has the traditional male role of……plumber lol. The reality is that if a game is fun, the story really doesn't matter. In film, not every story needs to play out exactly the same way; that would be boring. You can have movies where the hero saves the princess and they may be good or bad, and you can have movies that do other things too.

@@painovoimaton or the "kill the family" part. This man.
Why do they always misuse the term "mary-sue". Like just because a girl character isn't a useless pushover doesn't make her a mary sue. It's completely ironic how this guy literally wrote a mary sue character in his first book like holy shit.
He wrote a Gary Stu.
Well, most people use that term wrong. It's actually a very specific form of bad writing characterized by authors developing deeply unhealthy attitudes towards their characters due to using them as coping mechanisms. Usually when people try explain what a Mary Sue is they just end up describing individual symptoms, not the considerably more troubling underlying problem.
Now, I haven't read Shad's book and I don't plan to, but from what I've heard it may actually be a legit case. It sure sounds like some hardcore old school Mary Sueing.
Also, Jude: "Gary Stu" in an entirely superfluous term invented by people who were, for some reason, apparently uncomfortable using a female name for a phenomenon that has nothing to do with the gender of the character. There's really no important distinction between a male and female Mary Sue, so the latter does not need it's own special label. At the very least, they're interchangeable.
Due to the idea of being over idealized defaulted to female (cause idk men are already the ideal?), its being weaponized by chuds to attack any women that doesn't conform to regressive roles.
I have an actual criticism of Princess Peach. She did not get to be as much of a goober as every other character. Not as many funny bits as all the male characters got to have. Too much of a straight man, which is a role that girls are often forced into in comedy stories so that boys can be funny.
See this, THIS is actual criticism
I can see that. I think Bowser would have been a better straight man, as he’s the actual villain. It’s funny to see a turtle dinosaur sing about Peaches, but I think a more definitive threat would have made the stakes higher.
You can dunk people in lava all you want, but if we can’t stop laughing at you, then you’re not scary.

I'm genuinely so salty that he has all the cool hard cover Sanderson books...
Invincible is full of women wearing pants and also has a gay couple
One of the main antagonists of the second mistborn book is a creepy incel who tries to use gaslighting and emotional manipulation to isolate Vin from her friends and have her for himself, whom she stabs in the neck as the culmination of her arc, symbolically rejecting the environment of abuse and toxicity she grew up in. Her boyfriend spends the first 2/3 of the series basically being the damsel in distress she must protect. When the god of destruction who wants to end the world appears to her, he literally takes the form of her abusive, domineering older brother. Genuinely sad for his daughter after seeing how he dismisses her enjoyment of this movie because it didn't appeal to his and his sons' male power fantasy. You know she's never going to have the connection a child would want from their parent, because he's always going to see her as of lesser worth in comparison to his sons.
I bet his daughter gained way more out of seeing Peach being heroic than his sons "lost" from it.
He doesn't dismis his daughter's enjoyment of the movie because she's a girl. It's because that enjoyment is based on a superficial power fantasy.
In the Super Mario Bros. movie, Princess Peach is not a hero. I've studied The Hero with a Thousand Faces - probably the most foundational and authoritative text on heroes in storytelling. The Adventure of the Hero pattern can be summarised as the hero growing and self
-actualising in the face of challenges, adversity, and failure.
Peach's story barely resembles this; her character doesn't develop much over the course of the movie, so she cannot be said to have self-actualised. And crucially - and most pertinent to Shad's criticism of the movie - Peach doesn't really have to deal with failure. Hence, according to one of the best literary understandings of heroism, Peach is definitively not a hero.
With all that explained, it's not that hard to see the real reason Shad dismisses his daughter's enjoyment of the movie; it's based on a shallow power fantasy instead of true heroism. Shad even stated multiple times in his video that he wouldn't mind Peach being a strong female character if she had been written better, rather than being desperately propped up.
@@shrootskyi815 tl;dr Shad is a cowardly scumbag and you're a simp for a LARPing idiot. "Guys, I totally read one single book once, and the parts I chose to remember say he's right! So it'stotally okay for that guy I like to not care about" his own daughter!"

Woke political propaganda: "Women should be something more than just sex objects"
Noble knight Sir Shad: "No they shouldn't" *big trumpets for big man, wow so heroic*
He criticizes his daughter for liking Peach who he considers a “Mary Sue” completely oblivious to his own book which has the exact problems he accuses Peach of. His main character is also an over powered Gary Stu! He has no room to act like liking a Mary sue or power fantasy is bad (it’s not ) while also writing them! Are Mary sues good writing? Not really. But a story doesn’t have to be well written for someone to shamelessly enjoy it
I’m of the opinion that “Mary Sue’s” aren’t a character trope as much as they are an effect that a story has when one character is transparently the only character that matters.
Like in “Into the Spiderverse” the alternate spider-mans are all incredibly competent, badasses who likely could destroy the collider on their own, like peter A was going to before Miles came into the picture, yet that’s fine actually, because the story is fleshed out. Characters existing and being competent with no explanation isn’t a flaw in story telling, it’d be worse if the spiderverse spider-mans all had to show arcs of themselves growing into their own roles to justify their competence when it’d just re-tread a lot of what Miles was currently going through.
These “woke media” right winger bros are just mad that a woman is the competent one and that Mario has to go through an arc (I assume, I’ve never seen the mario movie.)
So like, yeah, Princess Peach can just be competent and that’s not a flaw at all as long as the movie is still competent.
Just wait for his sequel, where he slaves over ai prompts.

I think Mary Sues are more of a failure to be both interesting and believable, primarily as a consequence of a failed attempt to be more interesting. They're failed power fantasies fail to have any appeal. Can't have interest without stakes or real conflict, can't be emotionally believable when there's nothing to hold onto in terms of character flaws or growth. Normally a writer can get away with failing one or the other of the qualities in a character or story, but failing both makes a synergy of unenjoyable.
Take religious or mythological figures, for interest. Typically they aren't believable in the least, and sometimes the universe does revolve around them. But they're interesting in their context of myth, legend and faith, along with cultural and moral interpretation. So It not that a character can't be impossibly powerful or unbelievably important, it's that they have to have a very strong basis for being interesting despite these qualities to work as a character.
@@samkeiser9776 I think you’re thinking of flat arc characters. Flat arc can be used to great effect like Princess Peach. The issue with Mary Sues are that they usually forsake the internal consistency of the story and bend the universe around the Sue, unfortunately breaking immersion in the process.
@@pappanalab yeah, but my point is really that “mary sue’s” aren’t a character trope, because a character can have all the stereotypical qualities of a “mary sue.” (Extremely powerful, really important, well liked, significant lineage, other quirks etc.) and still not ruin a story.
Some definitions of the mary sue trope have to do with the superficial qualities of the character themselves, rather than how they’re just, in poorly written stories.
And when you define mary sues like that, it’s not actually helpful to anyone because it doesn’t really mean anything.

"Mario nails it because of his natural ability"? I want to remind people that if a woman had a "natural ability" to do something really well, she'd probably be called a Mary Sue by them.
Peach was living in the Mushroom Kingdom for years and Mario was new there, of course she had more experience. The whole point of her is that she is Mario's guide and the adventure is one where both have to watch each other backs and defeat Bowser and there is nothing wrong with that.
Exactly, and it's shown that Mario has to learn a lot to get used to the new world he's in. What's ironic too is that in the final confrontation in the movie, Mario and Luigi are the ones who take down Bowser and Peach literally says that they're heroes. They literally save Peach from Bowser. But Mario wouldn't have gotten to where he did without Peach. In my opinion, watching the movie I felt like the obvious main character was Mario, and Peach seemed like a major supporting character, so I don't get why some people were so pissed off. Like, Mario is still the main character and nothing's really changed that much aside from Peach getting more characterization, which I believe is a good thing.

You get hit by bullet bills and you fall in holes and you start over. The final, complete narrative of the game is Mario succeeding, but the human experience is of you failing _as_ Mario.
