When you see the sorts of things Anakin has done, it makes sense why Darth Vader would tell Luke that it was too late for him and that he was beyond saving.
Always considered it a weakness of Lucas' story that he made Vader have a good side and then spent all of episode 3 showing how bad Anakin was. This idea that there "is good in him" is a moral disaster of storytelling. It seems all romantic and because people want to believe in redemption stories Lucas gets away with it, but I find it all off-putting.
@@TheDanEdwards that was the whole point of the Skywalker saga mate. It was supposed to show how Vader became the person he is. At the end of the day, Vader was still the chosen one and brought balance. Qui-Gon, Padame and Luke all knew it.
@@TheDanEdwards - contrary to what we like to believe about the world, good people do bad things, make bad decisions and have bad impulses, and evil people have good impulses, can do good and make good decisions. The difference between a good person and an evil person isn't some innate tendency but just the circumstances they find themselves caught up in and the emotional choices they make when faced with them. To risk Godwin's Law, even Hitler started off as an innocent baby, grew into a struggling wannabe artist, and was then ground down and radicalised by spending WW1 being brutalised by trench warfare and then the years after the war watching Austria and Germany be economically asset stripped by the victors for war reparations. He didn't even found Nazism: he was initially sent to infiltrate it on behalf of the Weimar government and report back on their activities, just as many other former soldiers were sent to infiltrate other workers' unions so the government could keep an eye on what they were up to. Even his antisemitism was normal for the time. Evil men are made, not born, as uncomfortable as that is to admit. When the Nazis invaded Poland they sent regular German police units to enforce their rule, most of whom went along with the extrajudicial killings and other injustices out of a sense of loyalty to their comrades, not because they were innately bad to begin with. All these things were studied and learned after WW2 because we couldn't understand how humans could do it to each other, and every test and study - even using regular American college students - showed that we humans will do abominable things with the right motivations, be it love or loyalty or simply fear of authority or of failure. Good people can be made into monsters with the right emotional nudging, and the studies show it doesn't take all that much nudging if you find the right motivator. It's why i fundamentally reject the concept of the Greater Good, because that's generally one of the best motivators of evil acts.
Also how Luke was the only one who felt and believed that Vader could be redeemed because there was still good in him. Nobody else believed that, especially Obiwan and Yoda who both thought Anakin was beyond saving. It shows that Padme definitely lives in Luke and Leia in so many ways is like her mother. Brave, strong but also compassionate and selfless.
After knowing how blinded the order was with Ashokas last moments in clone wars and in the order you feel less bad cuz their downfall was partially their fault for losing their values
At the end when Anikan and Obi-Wan are fighting, the choreography is amazing especially when you consider the fact that the two actors are NOT filmed at high speed - the two practiced so much that they were actually able to fight at that speed.
Yeah, sometimes people are just that fast. Here, South Indian actors moved so fast, like head movements and all. I thought why they speed things up for? Lessening the duration or cutout the frames in between? Then I saw their interview, turns out they're just that energetic.
Eso le paso a wesley Snipes en la peli que sale con Jean claude van dam, se movia tan rapido que le pidieron bajar la velocidad de sus artes marciales por que la camara no lo captaba jaaa.
I believe they had to slow down or be less complicated in some sections just so the cameras could keep up, but they wanted to have it be their own choreographed scenes. One of the best choreographed sword fights in cinematography history either way for sure!
Jay was spot on at the end regarding Padme's intentional baby bump at her funeral. They needed the cover story that the children died with her so they would not be on Vader's radar. A rare Amber miss seeing just the literal and props to Jordan seeing the bigger picture. Look at the big brain on Jay! ;P
Actually both of them are right, while Padme’s bump is set up to fool Siths but pregnant ladies still have bumps even after a few months of giving birth.
In the excellent book adaption, he says, " I loved you, Anakin, you we're my brother, but you became the very thing you sought to destroy, but yoi left it ruin. I loved you, but I could not save you. " Maybe not verbatim, but close enough.
Anakin's turning to the dark side is what killed Padme; it's not simply that he failed to save her after all that; his own turning is what he was foreseeing. Had he not given into the fear and tried to "save her" she never would have needed saving. That's what makes the story so tragic. She only died in child birth because she was so heartbroken (and physically harmed from the choking).
There’s a theory (not sure if it’s a fan theory, I just saw it on RUclips) that the Emperor used the power of the dark side to drain the life from Padme and transfer it to Ankin to keep him alive.
Remember what Yoda told Anakin in Episode 1. “Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.” In TPM we see Anakin fearful of leaving his mother and everything he knows. In AOTC we see that fear manifest into anger. He’s angry because he feels he failed his mother. In ROTS it’s all recapped. He’s fearful of losing those closest to him, he’s angry and frustrated at the council for their lack of trust in him. Then the last part of the journey is that anger turning into hate, he begins to resent the Jedi and Obi-Wan. Finally the hate turns into suffering. The moment the mask closes on his face, he is entombed in the suit, confined to suffering for the rest of his days, living in pain, living with his loss. His worst fears were realised and it was all at the hand of a master manipulator Palpatine. He completely played Anakin, The Jedi, Dooku, Grevious, the Senate, the Republic and the Separatists like a game of chess. Anakin’s story arc across episodes 1-6 is both the ultimate tragedy and the greatest redemption arc.
Totally tragic considering he was doing it to save Padme, but ultimately failed, due to the Sith being unable to keep the ones he loved from dying. He also choked her too, which made him look real bad.
That’s actually a Sith Quote and Yoda didn’t finish half of it: “Fear leads to Anger. Anger leads to Hate. Hate leads to Suffering. Suffering Leads to Strength l. Strength leads to Power. Power leads to Victory.”
It's even more heartbreaking because it speaks volumes of how little Obi-Wan actually understood the pain of his padawan. Obi-Wan saw Anakin as a brother, while Anakin had no need for such a figure. He desperately needed a father and always wanted Obi-Wan to see that. But, even as Anakin was burning alive and screaming for death, Obi-Wan still doesn't understand. He call's him "brother" yet again. That was the final nail in the coffin for Anakin, and that's the look you see in his eyes before Obi-Wan leaves...
After her death in childbirth on Polis Massa, Amidala's body was returned to Naboo for the proper funeral rites. In order to hide the fact that Amidala's twins survived, her body was prepared to still appear pregnant. Her maternal grandmother, Ryoo Thule, oversaw Amidala's funeral, as per Naboo custom.
What you missed in Episode 1 was when Palpatine said he was going to keep an eye on “young Skywalker”. Those of us who grew up with Episode 6 recognized that voice.
Certainly the voice was recognisable - but what spoiled the suprise for me was seeing Ian McDarmid in the cast and that he was playing a character called Palpatine (though the name wasn't mentioned in RotJ)
@@DJLtravelvids I was spoiled by a character timeline piece in time magazine back in the early 2000's. It showed the character's appearances over the timeline of movies and I was shocked to see that he would become The Emperor.
My favorite scene in this movie is when Palpatine said "He's too dangerous to be left alive" referring to Count Dooku and then later Mace Windu says the same thing referring to Palpatine. It further convinces Anakin that Jedi and Sith are two sides of the same coin.
@@Mourtzouphlos240 they are when your judgement is consumed by anger and hatred, and you’re manipulated into thinking that the Jedi are striking down unarmed prisoners in an attempt to initiate a coup d'état.
For those who dont know: "Ian McDiarmid (born August 11, 1944[1]) portrayed Palpatine/Darth Sidious in the Star Wars films. He appears in every film of the prequel trilogy, as well as in Return of the Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. He is one of the three actors to have appeared in all three Star Wars trilogies along with Kenny Baker (R2-D2) and Anthony Daniels (C-3PO)."
One of my favorite moments in the entire franchise happens in this movie. Padme's line "So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause" it's such a great moment that still gives me chills

You have to remember that Chancellor Palpatine was also raising Anikin too. Palpatine used Anikin's fears to twist his mind since age 8. As for the Padmae situation, that ended up being a self-fulfilling profassee by Anikin
Those grunts and screams that Palpatine does when fighting mace and the other masters, is a dark side ability...its supposed to instill pure fear into an opponent and basically put them into a state of momentary shock...then he blitzes them bc they are overwhelmed by his ability. Those jedi masters he killed with ease were some of the best.
It was so funny when I realized y'all didn't recognize Emperor Palatine in Episode 1 or 2 😂😂😂 I was waiting on you to watch this and finally put it together!
Yeah, that really bothered me because it was so blatantly obvious, lol. Emporer Palpatine...Senator Palpatine. They definitely watched the OG's,so I'm shocked the didn't figure it out until now. They're usually super quick to pick that kind of stuff up.
@@brianmcmaster5112 I thought that a bit too, but they have only seen the movies once. I read the books, watched the movies a hundred times each, so it was easy for me and probably you too.
a very popular theory, that feeds into the tragic display of manipulation of Anakin, is that Palpatine used the ability he promised Anakin about saving life. He took the last bit of Padme's life to keep Anakin alive. Her death fed Anakin's despair and hate, thus increasing Palpatine's hold over Vader.
Padme realizing how twisted he’d become & crying makes me tear up. But when Obi Wan says that I lose it every time! This is the episode I watch the least bc ion want to cry 😭
@@Taewills same. Padme’s “you’re going down a path I can’t follow” and Obi Wan’s “YOU WERE THE CHOSEN ONE” “you were my brother Anakin, I loved you” always gets me 😭
I was deep into Star Wars as a kid, even though the original movies had been out for years, I watched them over and over on VHS. Palpatine was known as the Emperor’s name for a long time within the extended universe, so a lot of us knew from the jump what he would become. It’s fascinating to see how long it takes people to notice he’s sketchy when going back to these. Btw, his first name is Sheev, which never gets said in the movies, it’s just a funny name that I like to bring to people’s attention now and then.
I love all three prequels but something they do especially well is potray what a geniune threat Palpatine is. Not only because he's powerful but also how well he can manipulate people. He's basically been groming Anakin constantly being around him and planting the seeds that would eventually get Anakin to turn to the dark side. And he adapts too like during the oprea house scene, he pushes a little too hard at that moment so instead he starts telling about plagius and how he could bring people back to life knowing that's one of the buttons to push.
I like the prequel also. I feel most people didn't get it. Hayden Christensen performance for one. When I was younger I didn't get it either. People think he was whiney but the truth is. Anakin knew he was the most powerful. He could feel it. So it literally drove him insane. That is why he hated following orders because he knew he could crush em like a bug.
Darth Sidious planted so much fear into Anakin he simultaneously drained Padme of her will. The will to act and love are opposite energies of fear and hate. The droid says for reasons they can’t explain, she has lost the will to live. Padme takes her last breaths as Darth Vader takes his first.
I literally was shivering with excitement, in the theatre, waiting for the babies to be born, and seeing Darth Vader arise. Seeing it all come together, finally, after so many years, was EPIC!!!
i don't get people who don't like the prequels... I get some of the dialog could have been a lot better but the story is SOOOO good... the "You were my brother Anakin" part kills me...
That's fair but there are alot of things they did wrong. To list them all would take far too long. Personally, I really don't like the prequels, but if people like them then I'm supportive, not everyone will like the same things
@DavidJohnson-mv2cy the prequels are miles above the Disney versions. Basically the same theme, but larger scale. And not really any characters that were relatable.
@billmoretz8718 not a fan of the sequel trilogy but I will say that if it weren't for Disney, we wouldn't have Rogue One, The Mandalorian, or Andor. So Disney > Lucas' post original trilogy work
@@billmoretz8718 for better or worse, it's still Star Wars. I can watch cringey Twilight-esque Rey/Kylo scenes just like I can watch Anakin's creepy stalker eyes and endless galactic CSPAN scenes
One reason some people hate Ep1-3 is that there was tremendous hype when these movies came out. Also, the Expanded Universe (aka the spin-offs) were going strong at the time and some had hoped that more of those stories to be reflected in the films. Frankly, there was no way the movies could match expectations for those people.
I've always felt if Anakin hadn't turned, Padme would've lived. Whether the vision was a premonition of a possible future or a plant in his mind by Palpatine, Anakin's choice to turn dark in order to save Padme ultimately led to him causing her death in the first place.
He never cared about Padme or the child(ren). If he did their lives would have been more important to him than "getting in trouble". He never gives specifics when he speaks to Yoda. What would have happened if he told Yoda everything? The Jedi Council would have told him that he could be a Jedi or be married. One or the other, not both. "Anakin is simply greedy." - George Lucas.
George Lucas pulled that concept right out of Greek Mythology. Where a king or someone with great power visits the Oracle, who tells him of some great tragedy that will befall him, like his son will kill him and take his throne, and so he goes out of his way to try and prevent this, resorting to the most diabolical acts. And in the end he's destroyed just as predicted, and it's all a consequence of the actions he set in motion to prevent it.. The idea seems to be that if you live in such great fear of a terrible destiny, you pretty much ensure it will happen.
@@Mourtzouphlos240I wouldn't say he didn't care for them. But he was 100% selfish. Which is purposefully juxtaposed against his selfless sacrifice for Luke years later which redeems him and let's him fulfill his destiny.
No if Qui-Gon lived he wouldn't have turned think about it he freed him, tried to free his mother, made his dream of becoming a Jedi a reality, believed in him from the get go n had his back Obi didn't even want to train Anakin at first once Qui Gon died Palpatine jumped on it fast If Padme was going to prevent him from turning it would've happened before the fight with Obi Wan
It always amazed me, that we loved this movie.. and found many parts shocking.... and yet...we KNEW, how it had to end. That was some good story telling.
I have always loved the irony of Anakin wanting to turn evil to save Padme. And his turn is what causes her death. Also the scene with both on operating table Padme dying as Anakin is being reborn as Vader. I have always felt like Emperor some how used her life force to keep anakin alive. A life for a life.
And that healing others is a light side force ability not a dark side. The dark side has the ability to stay alive through hatred. The light side has the ability to save lives through love.
How many years later and it still hurts like hell to watch this downfall even in a reaction… just painful. And the parallels in that final scene between Padme and Anakin laying on their respective operating tables…. the most tragic. 😪😞
the fight at the end was worth all of these 3 prequels. when obi tells anakin, he loved him like a brother and he was supposed to destroy the sith, the emotion in ewans voice always gets to me
It's nice that you guys were able to watch them all in a short time instead of having to wait years between films. Especially for the Sidious reveal. If you were into Star Wars lore back in the day, you eventually hear the Emperor referred to as "Emperor Palpatine" so as soon as you meet "Senator Palpatine" you know where it goes from there.
Yes, and he's called Emperor Palpatine all through the books too (only books I've ever regretted reading; they're so awful, lol). These three movies were so heartbreaking to watch. I felt no joy watching them as I had the first three, so I've just never liked these movies. It's good to know the history, but they're not movies I go out of my watch to watch over and over like I did A New Hope - Return of the Jedi. Not the same feelings at all. Having all those years between the two trilogies really makes a difference in how one experiences these stories, I think.
@kevinzhang6623honestly, you didn’t even have to hear them call him Emporer Palpatine. I was 8 when Episode I came out and called that he was Darth Sidious cause they got the same actor. My Dad was laughing cause I had remembered him from when I last saw the movies on TV, and I remember my mom telling me I was wrong til we got the DVD’s a few years later and she rewatched. Honestly, was kind of surprised they didn’t notice after watching the OG’s and jumping to the prequels.
I remember reading the novels when I was a teen, and when Episode 1 came out and the name drop of "Senator Palpatine" and "Chancellor Palpatine" I did the double take and realised EXACTLY who he was...
45:41 …..”Don’t Try It!”…. I love this moment so much because it’s the EXACT move Obi-Wan uses against Darth Mail, that’s why he knows what Anakins going to do and how to defend against it 😳🤓💯❤️🔥
Having watched The Clone Wars series I always find Anakin's "My Powers have Doubled since we last met," line kind of Funny considering the number of times the two faced off throughout the series.
I love your reactions and especially watching you guys go through these movies. I still remember waiting 10+ hours in line to see the midnight premiere of this. Everyone was so excited and theorizing the whole time. My grandma was with me. I had just graduated high school and my friends were confused why my grandma was there. She then proceeded to school them in her knowledge of Star Wars. She took me to the first 2 prequel midnight showings so of course I was going to finish it with her. My love of Star Wars and sci-fi in general came from her and my mom. When the new ones came out we all called each other to talk about them. She's nearly 90 and we call each other after every episode of The Mandalorian and all the Star Wars shows. My grandma is awesome.
@@reeferman42078 I miss them too. Waiting for hours and hours in line just to get a good seat could've been awful but you were surrounded by people just as into and excited about the movie as you were. I did the midnight showings for all the big early-mid 2000s movies. Like LOTR, Spider-man, X-men, Harry Potter and so many more. It was so much fun. They don't really do them any more. Now instead of the first showing being at midnight, it's at like 3 or 4 in the afternoon and you just pick your seat online. They were some super fun times and I made some great friends that way.
The “high ground” moment is an Easter egg to “Return of the Jedi” when Luke and Vader are fighting in the throne room and when Luke kicks him down, he gets back up and says “Obi-Wan has taught you well”. This is my favorite movie out of the entire Skywalker saga because it completes the story and because of the music
33:18 during that scene C3PO asks R2 what's happened/what's wrong and it's been confirmed that R2 says "I don't know, Anakin doesn't speak to me anymore"...also good catch on pointing out JarJar voted to give Palps his power
After his mother died and the way he reacted in anger killing the sand people, the chancellor knew he had something he could work with in developing Anekin to become a sith
Loved this. I love seeing prequel reactions. Incredibly emotional. The longer I love these movies, the more years go by, the more emotional I get with these movies!
The kid that bravely ambushed the clones when Senator Organa was at the Temple is played by George's adopted son, named Jett in fact, George's kids have appeared all through the trilogy HE was even in a scene, only for a few seconds though
@@zebzamboni I'm a part of a family with history of adoption through multiple generations and there's no diminished relationship by saying what it is. If anything, it's a different and more selfless kind of love because it's a relationship that you choose to take on and that makes it all the more valuable.
@@austinbarbeau6025 Yeah, I took the "adopted" part of the original comment as a sweet note rather than one that diminished the relationship in any way. In fact, @mikerudy1's response reminded me of Ahmed Best talking about the backlash to Jar-Jar's accent when "Phantom Menace" came out. Although people took Jar-Jar as a "rastafarian Stepin Fetchit" racial caricature, Best said there was none of that in the character and he wouldn't have taken the role if there was. He also said, "I think the people who are saying those things are very much in touch with the racism inside themselves. They sense African-American descent, and all they can think of is Stepin Fetchit. They can't compare it to Jerry Lewis or Buster Keaton or even Jackie Chan." Similarly, someone who reacts to the word "adopted" by saying it "diminishes the relationship" is really revealing their own feelings about adoption and adopted kids -- that it's somehow a lesser relationship -- a feeling which neither OP nor myself share.
@@zebzamboni You could’ve omitted your entire comment there, just saying. No need to diminish those who are adopted as if they have a less valuable relationship just because they're adopted. You may want to look up the definition for "adopted" because your current understanding of it is incorrect lol.
So great to watch reactors that really understood and enjoyed these films in the series. This one was absolutely heart stopping, particularly the first breaths of Darth Vader. Look forward to you guy's watching more
I'm so glad y'all got to this one! Really tied up the story for Eps 4-6 (original trilogy). Maybe not cool to say, but I liked this movie better than all the others, including the last 3. Congrats on 2 years on your music channel!
I feel like as time goes on more people are learning to appreciate this trilogy more. There will still be some who will never like it, but i feel like a lot more people have come around to it. The original will always be my fave, but i really do enjoy this trilogy too. Great reactions as always.
You are talking about me. I don't hate them as much as I use to but these movies are still my least favorite of ALL the movies. I'm m going to list all of the reasons why. Only thing I love is Yoda fighting. Amber & Jay were spot on with their reaction.
I watch a lot of Star Wars reactions, and seen several other people react to the trilogies. But you all are my favorite. I enjoy your reactions so much. There’s certainly a lot of criticisms that can be made of the films, but I love seeing how you can see the wonder and positive sides to these films. Keep up the good work! ❤
The Sith derive power from the darker emotions, mainly from anger and hatred but also fear. Some have been known to allow pain to fuel them. I’ve always suspected Anakin tapped into the dark side on Mustafar through the intense pain from being burnt as well as his hatred for Obi-Wan… this kept him alive.
They are taught to use their pain. And some take it very far. Darth Malgus purposely killed his own lover because even though it hurt to do, he knew that pain and anger would make him even more powerful and for a Sith, that means more than any love or riches.
One of the great details of this movie is that at every stage Anakin turns to the Jedi seeking help and advice. The scene with Yoda epitomises it perfectly, Anakin is struggling with his feelings and the visions he is having and instead of offering some kind of support the Jedi essentially shame him for having those feelings and advise him to just stop caring. It's similar to when people seek help for depression and other mental health issues, when the person you confides it turns around and says you should just try being happy or try not having those feelings it just contributes to the spiral. If for one moment the Jedi hadn't been so rigid in their orthodoxy and addressed the issues their members were facing with the compassion they are supposed to embody then Anakin most likely would have got the help he needed and not felt as though the dark side was his only avenue. The Clone Wars has a few arc that emphasis how broken the Jedi Order is during this period
Trying to be happy, though, has an actual positive psychological effect toward being happy, especially for those who dwell on their emotions ie not trying at all. Depression is addictive, and for some people the best treatment is to break the addiction.
Clone Wars makes it worse with the fact that the Jedi actively support those that experience visions, yet they did the opposite once Anakin started experiencing them too.
The Jedi don't tell him not to have feelings. Jedi make a pledge to not marry, have children. Yoda told him that attachments have the potential to lead one to the dark side. (He said something similar to Luke in "The Empire Strikes Back" -- not to let his anger control him.) Anakin broke the Jedi code when he sought revenge for his mother's death and when he married Padme. His attachments led him to let his anger make his choices. Thus he chose the expedience of the dark side, the satisfaction of revenge over choosing the good. He let his anger -- not love -- make his choices.
Absolutely Well Said @ArcticAnomaly In a sense, palpatine actually showed and gave attention ro Anakin, spoke to him one on one, that's respect and attention, he wasn't ever speaking down to him but with him.
@45:37 that line makes me laugh all the time. But seriously though, my favorite part is Yoda vs. Palpatine/Darth Sidious. The music and the choir help to elevate the tension in the final fights of this film.
The opening battle scene in this is SO epic. I remember watching this in the iMAX Cinema (at least that's what we call it here in Australia, it just means the sound is better and the screen is taller and wider) and I was MIND BLOWN.. I love how R2D2 consistently says "You don't want none of this smoke" 😂.. I also believe BOTH of your theories behind why Padmei still appears pregnant at her burial have merit. It is likely she still is swollen post partum but also highly likely they did make her appear as though her babies died unborn, for just the reasons J mentioned. So perceptive, I love it!! great reaction as always ❤
I really enjoyed your reaction to this guys. Hayden and Ewan practiced a long time for their solo fighting to nail every hit. We all knew that Anakin would turn, the most interesting part was how he became Darth Vader. From what I've heard, the crew on set when Hayden took his iconic first breath as Darth gave them chills. Hope you watch the others, including two shows after the films :D
Shame they didn’t use stunt doubles for the windu/palpatine fight but the actors insisted on doing it themselves. Due to their ages it looks like an old man fight but in the books it’s supposed to be much more impressive and superhuman.
Qui Gonn Jinn spirit taught Obi Wan, in all those lonely years in Tatooine... to become a force ghost after life. That´s why, if you remember guys, he told Vader in episode IV: "if you strike me down, I´ll become more powerful that you can possibly imagine".
Amber there's one thing I need to correct you on. Leia LOOKED like her mom but Luke was the most like her in personality and how both Padme and Luke still believed there was good in Anakin. Whereas Luke looked like Anakin when he was young, but Leia had her dad's personality and spirit. When he was Anakin, not Vader of course. Leia was fiesty, bold and headstrong and she gets that from her father. When you were comparing Leia to Padme they are only alike in looks

Yea it was the funest time I've ever had at a movie the crowd was rowdy and we were hitting beach balls before the movie and the manager came in and said we had to calm down when the movie started, like we would actually be talking and playing during the movie we waited years to see, some people just don't understand star wars fans
@@ericseitzler81 OMG we had beach balls at our midnight showing as well!! Anakin's fall to the Dark Side was rooted in his fear, especially his fear of loss. He already lost his mother to the Tusken Raiders, and even slaughtering that camp didn't cure his emotions regarding that travesty. But having similar nightmares pop up, this time about losing Padme in childbirth, really sent Anakin over the edge. Palpatine played him like a fiddle, manipulating him against the Jedi, fully aware that they were also playing him against the Chancellor in return. Anakin was caught between two extreme parties, neither of which were prepared to fully place their faith in him. In the end, Palpatine lied in saying Vader had killed Padme, which cemented his pain and anger in the Dark Side, while Obi-Wan and Yoda exiled themselves, to Tatooine and Dagobah, respectively.
When Anakin turned his lightsaber on those kids I loved your reaction. Was waiting for you to jump through the tv and just knock the hell out of him lol
I feel so blessed to have seen the original Star Wars in theaters in 1977 and then these amazing prequels. Ive passed my love of these movies on to my kids, and i plan on passing it down to my new grandson too. ❤❤❤
Rob kept saying that he can't wait to see what the next one is, but the next one was the very first Star Wars movie. This one just completes the cycle.
I actually became a fan of Star Wars by watching Episode 1-2 first, then 4 thru 6. I knew what it was cause my lil brother was a fan but I never watched them before. And as a teenager we moved to a new house and there was no cable and the only thing to watched was Star Wars Episode 1 that belonged to my lil brother, and I think he also had Episodes 2 Attack of the Clones, and I fell in loved with it. Ended up watching Episode 3 in theaters with my brother and I cried so badly during the downfall of Anakin, especially Order 66 and during the fight of him and Obi won cause I really wanted him to wake up from his delusion that the jedi were evil and see the truth that he was being manipulated and just live a happy life with Padme and his children. But I got really sad too that he killed the younglings, especially with youngling (s) of his own on the way. But you actually see the pain it caused him in the scene where Padme is crying, and then they also show Anakin crying as well after, like he is deeply not wanting to do what he just did but he is willing to sacrifice everything for Padme, which when you really think about it he kinda did. He lost himself to the dark side trying to save her when fighting against the dark side is what he was taught all his life to do, all because he really loved her, not because he loved being evil. Those tears he cried, and when he said to Luke "it's too late for me", are kinda proof that he turned to the dark side out of love for Padme not love for evil. You kinda have to see it as he was stuck. Cause he now had nowhere to go cause he committed treason basically. So What happens if he goes back? The jedi council no longer exist, so what will happen to you as someone who basically wiped out a whole kinda military group? Would someone want to defend someone like that? Not only that but the emperor now has power so if you leave him and go back he will find you and can kill you. So your stuck. So I'm guessing that is why Darth Vader gave in even more to the dark side cause he had no where to go but inside he was always that Anakin in love with Padme. When he lost her he woke up back to reality but like he said to Luke "It's already too late for me." Cause he had no choice but to serve the emperor now, and nowhere to go. But Luke gave him back that life at the end. That's why he said "You were right. " when he died. Over 20 years he waited for that freedom.
13:41 If Anakin would have become a Master here he would have had access to the restricted section at the temple library which could have helped him find another way to protect Padme. That info comes from the Episode III novelisation. Not becoming a Master is a reason why he was angry at Mace denying him that. A part of that holocron vault can be seen in the 2008 animated clone wars show.
Something to cheer you up. When Anakin walks in to the room with the younglings. The actor who played Anakin was so good with the kids they couldn't get a take without one of the kids smiling or laughing at him. So one time he walked in the room, and he yelled BOO real loud, and everyone's face went serious, and the one kid flinched, and that's the take they used when he pulls out his lightsaber. lol He had to surprise them because they couldn't get them to act scared of him.
Great reactions guys! I saw every one in the theater and they all were so much fun and entertaining. To complete and link this one to Episode IV, you should check out Rogue One!
Rogue One was perhaps the most-realistic of the Star Wars movies. It is my second-favorite, after Empire Strikes Back (which will forever be my favorite).
George Lucas announced this trilogy in November of ‘94. We all knew Episode III would be the best one. We had to wait LITERALLY 11 years for this one when it finally released in May of ‘05. Excellent review guys!!!
I agree, this is my favorite episode. The action, the drama and the culmination of Anakin's "destiny". This is the most emotional and thought-provoking episode.
This whole story about Darth Vader plays like a Greek tragedy. I'm sure that was George Lucas intent, too. I was just a young girl when I saw this and I cried for real when Padme died. I loved her so much.
The biggest tragedy of Anakins fall from crace is that the vision he has of Padme dying is his own doing. If he had done nothing to prevent her death, she probably wouldn't have died in childbirth, and Anakin would have been able to help stop the emperor
I just love the theme of *"Would you condemn the whole world to save your wife?".* I love that this is the motivation they chose for Anakin. Especially when his dreams about his mother came true. This solidifies Anakin's resolve to not let it happen to Padme. It's definitely derived from classic tragedy.
@@Agadorn70he whole concept of anakin being power hungry and so consumed that he betrays and kills his friends and ironically becomes the thing he swore to destroy is very much lifted from Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
@xBlackout718x You can find a lot of similarities between Anakins' journey and many myths and legends told through the ages. It seems that the "hunger for power consumes you" theme is ever present in whichever legend or lore you study
r2 is low key badass bc he is the only creature that is there in the beginning and survives all to the end . he was grown when 3 PO was built... already in the fight.
Anakin's story is tragic. He lost his mother in such a brutal way- for the first time releasing those powerful emotions. He was so terrified to lose Padme, he would have done anything to protect her. When he kills the Separatists on Mustafar, you can see tears in his eyes. He didn't want to do what he did. He felt like he had no choice. Once he had done it, there was no going back, so he accepted his fate as a Sith- the epitome of evil, until his son, the true chosen one, helped release him from his torment.
George Lucas confirmed that Anakin/Vader was and is still The Chosen One. Throughout all of Star Wars. He killed the Emperor in the end, after seeing the light through his son.
I've seen this movie countless times, read through lots of the extended universe lore, and still I NEVER realized that Padme had an intentional baby bump at her funeral. I always thought they were just showing that little carved thing Anakin had given her in the phantom menace. Also, I wanna say I loved this reaction! Really nice to see you guys being taken on such an emotional rollercoaster! It's easy to forget how impactful this movie was, with how much it gets memed everywhere. Now you MUST watch "Star War The Third Gathers: Backstroke of the West"! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT
Fun fact about the Obi-Wan and Anakin fight, none of that was sped up in post. That is the two actors, fighting that fast. Check out the behind the scenes, of how they did it!
After finishing the Clone Wars, Anakin’s attitude hit differently, especially in the scene when Mace didn’t give him the rank of Master. Prior, I used to see it as really bratty and ungrateful, now after the stuff that’s happened that’s led to this point, it’s more of a “Seriously?” After everything they’ve been through fighting in the Clone Wars, it’s easier to see how he’s become more jaded than easily swayed. Anakin never had a father, and Qui-Gon would have been that, but he sadly died and Obi-Wan, who is more of a brother than a father figure to Anakin, only trained him as a promise to his dying master. Without that sort of elder guidance it’s easy to be attached to any fatherly figure, even though Palpatine was totally being completely manipulative.
It was still bratty. Dude wasn't worthy of being a master even with all his accomplishments, because he was selfish and vain and lacked humility required to be a true spiritual leader in the Jedi Order.
@BcB Theta Eh that was made up after the fact because the movies were so poorly written they needed to add motivation. It doesn't change his attitude in that moment, or his behaviors throughout his apprenticeship.
I've been waiting for y'all to watch this one!! I'm a lover of the original trilogy, but Revenge of the Sith is so good! You totally should watch Rogue One next. It fits next in the timeline and it's a fantastic movie - one of my favorites of all of them.
Coolest thing about this fight: Anakin tried the same move Obi-Wan used to take out Maul when Maul had the high ground. Obi taught him that move, but didn’t teach him how to counter it
If you want to see what happens next, WATCH THE OBI-WAN KENOBI miniseries. It deals with the aftermath of the Kenobi/Vader struggle, where they do cross paths again, and chronologically takes place before the sequels so there's nothing to spoil. It's a slow starter but well worth it and gives more insight into both men, as well as the lives of Luke and Leia.
the clones have inhibitor chips that caused them to obey select orders when activated. notice cody is kinda hunched but as soon as palps says order 66 he straightens up immediately. some clones tried to fight the order and some gladly followed it. not every jedi was a saint.
@@DZatheus Personally, I figured at the time that it was some kind of pre-conceived psychological conditioning anyway, implanted during their gestation on Kamino, so when they were given Order 66 it just triggered them and they had no control over their actions. So I never blamed Cody and the others for what they were forced to do.
@@benmason9755 I actually like more that they did it willingly, makes it a lot darker. An inhibitor chip kinda cheapens it, but to each their own I guess.

I've enjoyed watching your reactions to the prequel trilogy. I grew up with them and loved and it's disappointing how much criticism they got when they came out. But younger generations have more of an appreciation for the prequels which is wonderful to see because the story is a great, well told story. One thing: Padme was intentionally buried to look still pregnant so the twins could be hidden from Vader/Palpatine. It was intentional so people would think the babies died in utero. The official story was she was killed by the Jedi.
That's the most perfect millennial response to Episode III "ya gurl, your baby daddy is twisted......." requoting in the most supportive way possible, LOL not a put down!!! just interesting to hear someone say it that way
In the original script, Vadar's choke was supposed to intensify Damaging Padma's upper raspatory organs when obiwan tells him to let her go. but this scene was considered to brutal and was removed from the script. but still can be seen if you look up the cut scenes. this coupled with her shattered will was what was supposed to be her end. Which does make more sense then without it.
That dialog at the end between Obi-Wan & Anakin you can just feel that Ewan & Hayden aren't acting anymore but completely embodying their characters "What?" It's not that Qui Gon is alive but that he learned a way for his spirit to endure within the Force, it's called being a Force Ghost & it's what Obi-Wan is seen as in The Empire Strikes Back & Return of the Jedi
1. Imagine how much of an iconic character you have to be when people are thrilled by your first breath 2. It's funny to see people who don't know Palpatine and the emperor are the same person 3. Clone wars the animated series is worth checking out to see more into the development of Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Ahsoka
And Luke even still doesn't give up on him. Then jj binks made Luke give up on his nephew because he though he could turn evil lol🤡🤡🤡
@@TheDanEdwards The whole point of a Tragedy is a *"Fall From Grace".* How would you write that without showing a good person turn bad?
Padme’s last words: there’s still good in him
Anakin’s last words: You were right
Awww I never thought of it that way.
Brave, strong but also compassionate and selfless.
also i’m pretty sure padme was about to say “i know there’s still hope”
George's last words: It's like poetry, it rhymes

Look at the big brain on Jay! ;P
Amber is right too, though. You don't stop looking pregnant right after you have a baby.
Actually both of them are right, while Padme’s bump is set up to fool Siths but pregnant ladies still have bumps even after a few months of giving birth.
And while they were talking about that, they both missed that she was holding the carved japor necklace that Anakin made for her in the first movie.
@@melanie62954 How long does that stay? Surely they waited atleast a little bit for the funeral.
You should watch the tv show Kenobi set ten years after this
Obi-Wan’s speech at the end gives me chills every time. It is one of my favorite scenes of all time.
This!
Self-fulfulling prophecy is always tragic to me
So it has some inspiration on greek tragedy.
There’s a theory (not sure if it’s a fan theory, I just saw it on RUclips) that the Emperor used the power of the dark side to drain the life from Padme and transfer it to Ankin to keep him alive.
And everyone called him Annie
Remember what Yoda told Anakin in Episode 1. “Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.”
In TPM we see Anakin fearful of leaving his mother and everything he knows.
And who taught him how to do this…… Plagueus The Wise. I dive to deep I know but boy that book is fire.
@@brianmcmaster5112 - sometimes in our ignorance we bring about the very ends we set out to avoid. Such is the tragedy of life.

Damn. Y’all cut the best part of the immolation scene. Obi-Wan telling Anakin he loved him as a brother is absolutely heartbreaking.
Broke me too.
And how did the part get cut when he named him "Darth......Vader....."
Editing needs some work most movies but they work hard.
I have a theory from the clon wars S7 , that Ashoka passed on that “Anakin was a brother to her”
After her death in childbirth on Polis Massa, Amidala's body was returned to Naboo for the proper funeral rites.

Yes, the exact opposites. Genocidal madman and not a genocidal madman are not hard to tell apart.

Death and rebirth, that's right.
I literally was shivering with excitement, in the theatre, waiting for the babies to be born, and seeing Darth Vader arise. Seeing it all come together, finally, after so many years, was EPIC!!!

Yes, it was a self fulfilling prophecy. Everything he was doing to try to stop her death were actually all the things that ended up killing her.
@@Mourtzouphlos240I wouldn't say he didn't care for them. But he was 100% selfish. Which is purposefully juxtaposed against his selfless sacrifice for Luke years later which redeems him and let's him fulfill his destiny.

It's nice that you guys were able to watch them all in a short time instead of having to wait years between films. Especially for the Sidious reveal.
Good analogy, especially when IV, V & VI were released 2 years apart from each other 😂😂
@kevinzhang6623honestly, you didn’t even have to hear them call him Emporer Palpatine.
@Atheist Biologist No, Zahn is great! I meant the books based off the first 3 movies. They were not well written.
Haha I've never thought of that. "What? They've doubled since last Tuesday?"
My favorite Star Wars movie by far. Nothing beats a great tragedy story, and this is one of the best
I miss midnight premieres and being young enough to go😅 I'm only 45 but gosh darn midnight is like really late
I've known since 1983 that Anakin lost his legs in a lightsaber duel on a lava planet and had to wait 28 years to see it happen in a movie.
You could've omitted "adopted" there. Just saying. No need to diminish their relationship.
@@johnplaysgames3120 Exactly! 👍🏼I'd say about 99% of people don't share that feeling either lol.
You have made me enjoy and appreciate this trilogy so much more. Thank you guys, keep up the amazing work!!!
Episode 3 is my personal favorite. Goated acting that can be enjoyed seriously or unseriously
One of my favorite reactions from you guys. You made smart, intelligent observations. I’m glad you were able to experience it going in totally cold!
So great to watch reactors that really understood and enjoyed these films in the series. This one was absolutely heart stopping, particularly the first breaths of Darth Vader. Look forward to you guy's watching more
G'day it's Steven from down under
Its great to see younger generations enjoy Star Wars too.
Great reaction guys.
May the force be with you.
@@philburton2223 see, while I have loved these and I do not recognize the sequel trilogy as canon.
Solo and Rogue One are good, though.
This is the pinnacle of Star Wars. Literally the best one. People who dont like the prequels are followers.
Clone Wars makes it worse with the fact that the Jedi actively support those that experience visions, yet they did the opposite once Anakin started experiencing them too.
that is one way to take it, but the way i understand it is not "You can't have attachments." but instead "learn to come to terms with loss."
Absolutely Well Said @ArcticAnomaly
In a sense, palpatine actually showed and gave attention ro Anakin, spoke to him one on one, that's respect and attention, he wasn't ever speaking down to him but with him.
I audibly said 'Woah' in the cinema and I'm not ashamed.
Yeah we’ve had imax in the US for a long time lol
You are so lucky you don't have to wait for each movie to come out. I remember being so excited when a new one came out. They are all so awesome.
FINALLY! Been waiting forever for y’all to finally watch this one. I could not wait to see your reactions to every twist this movie has to offer and it was definitely worth the wait! So much fun watching my favorite Star Wars movie with you guys! Rouge one needs to be next on the list for sure
I believe that Solo is actually next in terms of canon timeline, but rogue one technically came out first.
I remember going to see Episode III at the midnight showing in the theater. It was a blast.
Yea it was the funest time I've ever had at a movie the crowd was rowdy and we were hitting beach balls before the movie and the manager came in and said we had to calm down when the movie started, like we would actually be talking and playing during the movie we waited years to see, some people just don't understand star wars fans

In a way Vader did kill her. She had no will to live after his betrayal.
When anakin transformed to Vader and takes that first iconic breath I get goosebumps every time
When Anakin turned his lightsaber on those kids I loved your reaction. Was waiting for you to jump through the tv and just knock the hell out of him lol
I feel so blessed to have seen the original Star Wars in theaters in 1977 and then these amazing prequels. Ive passed my love of these movies on to my kids, and i plan on passing it down to my new grandson too. ❤❤❤
The pendant in her hand during her funeral parade, was given to her by Anikan in episode 1.
J was correct! They buried her “pregnant” to throw off any question. Plus nobody knew she was expecting twins.
10:39 Anakin and Padme are my grandparents.
"It's like poetry, it rhymes." - George Lucas
That was the best out of the prequel trilogy. So much emotions 😢
r2 is low key badass bc he is the only creature that is there in the beginning and survives all to the end . he was grown when 3 PO was built... already in the fight.
Anakin remained the chosen one. Luke saves him morally, but it is Anakin who destroys the emperor in the end and brings balance.
No lie, after what they did to Ahsoka, I'd have ditched them as well.
They literally gave his everything from a padawan to seat on council but the rank that comes with it
@@ChocolateFishBrainsalthough he took the worst route possible, the Jedi almost executed his padwan. Remember that.
Obi taught him that move, but didn’t teach him how to counter it
I thought the story of Anakin was sad he was manipulated dude got in his head he had so much potential
Moreso Leia than Luke. If they thought Vader was brutal in this film, he commits blatant war crimes in Obi Wan Kenobi series.

the clones have inhibitor chips that caused them to obey select orders when activated. notice cody is kinda hunched but as soon as palps says order 66 he straightens up immediately. some clones tried to fight the order and some gladly followed it. not every jedi was a saint.
That's disney canon tho, when this movie came to being, the clones just obeyed orders without any remorse.

Prince’s movie Purple Rain is literally a 2 hour concert with the man himself. You will LOVE it!!!!!
That's the most perfect millennial response to Episode III
"ya gurl, your baby daddy is twisted......." requoting in the most supportive way possible, LOL not a put down!!! just interesting to hear someone say it that way
I still get teary eyed whenever I watch this movie. 😢
That dialog at the end between Obi-Wan & Anakin you can just feel that Ewan & Hayden aren't acting anymore but completely embodying their characters
"What?" It's not that Qui Gon is alive but that he learned a way for his spirit to endure within the Force, it's called being a Force Ghost & it's what Obi-Wan is seen as in The Empire Strikes Back & Return of the Jedi
1. Imagine how much of an iconic character you have to be when people are thrilled by your first breath
2. It's funny to see people who don't know Palpatine and the emperor are the same person
3. Clone wars the animated series is worth checking out to see more into the development of Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Ahsoka
