    You called it, Hannah. Padmé's death was indeed a self-fulfilling prophecy caused by Anakin himself. That's what's so heartbreaking about it. He let his love turn into fear that turned him to the dark side, and that's what killed Padmé. So tragic, through and through.

    Notice when Anakin is crying he doesn't have the yellow eyes like he had a few minutes before. He is going back and forth between light and dark at this point.

    • @sorinturle4599
      @sorinturle4599 2 месяца назад +24

      Well that's the interesting thing...Anakin wasn't (yet) the most powerful, but he had by far the greatest potential. He was indeed the chosen one, but seemly nobody understood how. He was actually supposed to be the anchor between dark side and light, but without being in any of them. That was the ballance he should have brought. He could never reach his full potential as Jedi, neither as Sith. But to be there and not to fall into the dark, you have to have an insane mind control and discipline and a mentor who would know that. Perhaps the only moment when he was there, was when he defeated Doku, a thing Obi Wan couldn't and Yoda couldn't do it as categorical as Anakin did. He won, using both coolness and anger, but he didn't want to kill, however he screwed up listening to Palpatine.
      Instances about this thing are present in Ahshoka.

      Throughout the millennia, your spiritual brothers and sisters have thought, "Maybe _this_ time, the Greeks and the Trojans will make a peace that will last...maybe _this_ time, Arthur's kingdom will not be sundered in his lifetime...maybe _this_ time, Hamlet will evade the dastardly plot and become King..." and so forth, and so on, and on, and on. It's why the literary genre of alternate history has exploded in popularity in recent decades, I happen to believe. When people no longer see why they have to accept results they don't like in myth and fiction, they try to rewrite history itself. (Fair's fair, after all - if rulers can do it all the time, so can simple folk!) What kind of comprehensible world could we have, though, if it were possible in real life, everyone striving to impose their own ideals throughout all of time? And it's equally worrying when base and ignoble acts are covered up, just as much as when noble and admirable ones are.
      Ironically enough, the young directors of Hollywood were coming out with tales deep and dark, masterfully told, for about ten years before the first *Star Wars* movie trounced them all and brought back what someone called "the tyranny of the happy ending", where the audience need not devote any serious thought to the events that transpire on screen. Of course, pure entertainment has a place, but a people who pride themselves on their freedoms need to have things for the brain to chew on like a mental steak thick with tendons. (Interesting it is, that the word "worry" is a synonym for chewing.)
      I'm afraid there is no real point to this digression - but perhaps I've given you a few things to chew on. 🤓

    ROGUE ONE is absolutely the film you MUST watch. It explains how the plans for the Death Star would end up in Luke's hands, via R2-D2. Rogue One is the first Disney Star Wars film, but it was filmed in George Lucas style, because Garreth Edwards, the executive producer and i think the head director, loves the original six Star Wars films. As a child, in the 1980s, i heard the Rogue One story. Seeing it come to life on the silver screen was a dream come true. And, there are a couple major surprises, i won't say when it happens except to say the ones im thinking of are not in the first half of the film. They may not be a surprise to you, we'll just have to see.

    Hannah is sooooo intuitive! You’re actually right about Sideous being the one who put the dreams in Anakins mind! I’ve never seen someone guess that just off the movies so kudos to you.
    Something a lot of reactors dont understand about Anakin’s descent is how the dark side works. It seems like he just went from 0 to 100 but because of the way the force works once he accepted the dark side even just a little it completely hijacks the force user and essentially takes over. It’s so powerful it’s difficult to put into words. And the more evil he committed the more powerful the compulsion of the dark side. Killing Windu was the first major trigger. Accepting his apprenticeship from Sideous and the title of sith pushed him further. Killing the younglings pretty much 100% solidified his descent into darkness

    Something that people don't really think about when Yoda is telling Anakin to LET GO - he's not telling Anakin to stop caring about people. Palpatine was right about Yoda's arrogance. The Jedi had already been corrupted in their ways which just made the Sith's work that much easier. They held their beloved and corrupted republic too close to their chest and even accepted a surprise trojan army, built underneath their noses, to become their backbone. The Jedi speak of what is natural, and there is nothing natural about a republic. They could not just let go. They had to become the galaxy police. Anakin did bring balance to the force, just not the kind of balance the arrogant Jedi were thinking of. In the end only one elder and one senior remained on each side, everything evened out.

    • @DJSpike-ft9yw
      @DJSpike-ft9yw 2 месяца назад +6

      In hindsight, Yoda recognized this too. It’s the same argument as teaching Abstinence Only vs Teaching Safe S**. You might as well tell the kids to stop breathing with Abstinence only, since it flies in the face of human biology, peer bonding, and their own hormones screaming at them to breed.
      Teaching the complete abstinence of emotion and fear led to the fall of the Jedi as much as anything else. It left young Jedi whom actually felt doubts, emotions, and fear unprepared and dangerously unstable when faced with natural human emotional reactions. Teaching young Jedi how to manage and overcome their emotions and fears safely and remain themselves when under stress and pressure is what the Jedi actually needed to do.
      Qui-Gon Jinn actually personified this perfectly. He meditated and centered himself in the middle of the fight, when all the other Jedi seem to just charge in as emotionally unstable as the Sith are. Watch Mace Windu before and during the Palpatine fight and tell me, does that look like an emotionally at peace and stable Jedi? Give Windu a Red Saber and he’d have fit right in.

    Legit in awe of Hanna’s understanding of the themes in the story. Her comparison of the dark side to a drug is very astute. It’s a power rush that warps your thinking until you’re not yourself anymore and she called it before we even saw what it did to Anakin

      Once in a Forum-Text-Based RPG i played a Sith Character which also should break the grip of the dark side. It was like having the dark side twisting her perceptions, seeing betrayal und and manipulation in every word and gesture. She had like breakthroughs and failbacks, because the dark side, dont let you go just this easy. It took years and the help of a strong and wise Jedi-Master to loose outburst of hate and violence, and finding the reason why she turned to the dark side in the first place - just being unable to deal with a loss of loved one, and turning the pain into hate and revenge. Was even praised for great roleplaying.
      There is always a sacrifice required and a will at the limit. Vader hesitated so long before he stopped the emperor and it cost him his life.
      It's great that this film shoved the conflict with the "seeing the future" - problem. May it be timetravel or visions. In the end, you turn the things into the situation that you wanted to prevent. Whereas you could indeed assume Palpatine/Sidious put the vision in Anakins Dreams, why else should he know about it? But its a fantheory which can you make your own mind about.
      And its a ultimate demonstration when people think it would be a great think to do EVERYTHING for love, even destroy the world, or in this instance leaving the Galaxy in darkness.
      Like in Gladiator when Commodus strangled his father. "I would slaughter the whole world just to make you love me." It's the same mindset.
      It's not love anymore, these are delusions of grandeur and greed. And like Padme said: "I can't follow you anymore."

      Another fun fact is the reason General Grievous coughs in episode 3 is because during the Clone Wars he fought against Mace Windu. Mace is trained in the light side and the dark side but has controlled his feelings enough to only embrace dark side if he has no other choice. So when he fought Grievous he used a forbidden force move (to the Jedi) which was force crush and he damaged Grievous' heart which is why he coughs all movie long. Also when Mace confronts Palpatine he actually did beat him in lightsaber combat. Some ppl think Palpatine allowed Mace to win knowing Anakin was going to come help but Mace's secret force power (like Anakin's is seeing a bit into future) is called Shatterpoint and it allows him to automatically see his opponents biggest flaw/weakness and expose it. Which is why he destroyed Jango Fett in seconds in last movie. This ability only works though in a 1v1 situation.

But even after Lucas is given the blame he deserves, Hayden Christensen still earned every bit of the criticism he received and continues to receive for his uneven performance as Anakin.

      @@markhamstra1083 100%, dude. While I appreciate the world Lucas created, his dialogue writing in the prequels is crap and he didn't direct them well. Empire and Return were better off with different directors. And Hayden's acting in this still makes my skin crawl. I'll admit though, my friend showed me his scenes in that Asohka show and he improved very much. If he was that good in these movies, it would have been so much better.

      Its really just the love story doesn't ring so true between Padme and Anakin. They are great actors with the rest of the cast, just doesn't work that well in the romance scenes. It might be the age you see them at; all were designed for a young audience and not really older adults.

      @@ShawNshawN It’s not just the love story dialogue that doesn’t work. Always breaks my heart, every time.
    In all fairness, the originals didn't have the technology nor (I think) the foresight that the prequels had the luxury of. The saga was supposed to end with "Return of the Jedi", but everybody wanted MORE Star Wars. It gave George Lucas the opportunity to dive deeper into the story. I've come to really appreciate the sequels, especially after watching Dave Filoni's "Clone Wars" and "Rebels". They fleshed out Anakin's character even more.

    “You were a brother to me Anakin” pretty much sums up Obi Wans failure as a master. Anakin didn’t need a brother, he needed a father. Qui Gonn was the father figure Anakin needed, which is why his fight vs Maul in episode 1 is called “duel of the fates”

    • @WinterLady87
      @WinterLady87 Месяц назад

      Obi Wan was only 16 years older than Anakin, he wasn't emotionally equipped to be Anakin's father figure. That's not a failing. He fought the Council to take Anakin on 5 seconds after becoming a Knight, even threatening to leave the Order if he had to, and the Order meant everything to him. Even Anakin acknowledged that he was grateful to have Obi Wan as a master in AotC. Obi Wan did the best he could to train Anakin as a Jedi. At the end of the day, Anakin made very poor, emotion based decisions that wrecked not only his life but everyone else's.

    • @chargerscharlie1
      @chargerscharlie1 Месяц назад

      @@WinterLady87 I partly agree. But the problem with that is you hear all the time about when kids lose their parents that the oldest sibling steps up and assumes a lot of those responsibilities and that’s especially true with a 10+ year age gap. Obi was also fully aware of Anakins inner conflicts, he knew how close he was to his mother, saw how emotional he was with Padme in AOTC and they made clear in the clone wars he even knew that they were together. You could also see in episode 1 the differences in obi wans and qui gonna outlooks on the Jedi. Qui-Gon was more unorthodox in his approach, emphasizing a more intuitive and living connection to the Force. He placed great importance on listening to the will of the Force, even when it diverged from the Council's established doctrines and protocols. He was willing to take risks and challenge jedi traditions if he felt the force was guiding him in a different direction. In contrast, obi wan followed the councils way of being more rigid and dogmatic in their adherence to Jedi teachings and protocol. They preferred to operate within the established structures and hierarchies of the jedi, valuing consistency and order over individual intuition. The council viewed Qui-Gon's independent spirit and willingness to question their decisions as disruptive and potentially dangerous, but in the end he was vindicated by being the first jedi in over a thousand years to become one with the force after death

    Some explanation for Obi Wans „I have the high ground“ line:
    Maybe you remember in episode 1, when Obi Wan was hanging down in the reactor shaft with Darth Maul standing above him. It is very similar to the situation Obi Wan and Anakin are in in their battle on Mustafar and Anakin tries the same move Obi used all those years ago to defeat Maul.
    Unfortunately for him, Obi Wan went through this duel time and time again to learn how Maul could‘ve defeated him and why the highground position is so advantageous. Basically Maul could‘ve done the same to him, as he did to Anakin in the end and Obi Wan knew it. As he was training Anakin he taught this to him too, so they both knew what position they were in and what Obi Wan would do, should Anakin try to jump up to him. Yet he did it anyways, blinded by the Dark Side, believing to be so powerful this move will work against all odds. But we see how this play out for him…

      @@bethelberhane Anakin had 15 years to learn this at the Jedi temple. Honestly, if he hadn't learned it in his heart by the time Yoda mentioned it, it wasn't gonna happen. Not until Luke had to nearly die by Palpatine's hand in ep. 6.

      @@bethelberhane It’s one of the main tenets of the Jedi Order. All the Jedi would’ve understood this difference. In Ep.2, Anakin explains the difference between love and attachment to Padme. But he also kind of fudges the line between the two.
      George Lucas has always said that it was Anakin’s refusal to let go of things that was his downfall. It’s one of the main concepts of Zen Buddhism and Taoism, which heavily influenced Star Wars, particularly The Force. I think it’s audiences and the general public that don’t grasp the difference so they come to the wrong conclusion.

    This movie is such an emotional ride. Which is why the ending of Episode VI director's cut is so great. We see Darth Vader "die" and Anakin finally redeem himself, becoming one with the force.

    Padme wearing the thing Anakin gave her when he was a child and then literally taking it to her grave with her at the end is just the cherry on top for me. It's the perfect metaphor that through it all, she never completely lost her faith in his goodness or her love for him.

      It was a pretty messed up relationship. She knew he murdered lots of Sandpeople in that village that had nothing to do with Shmi. If I was considering a relationship with someone, them slaughtering children of any type would be a deal-breaker.

      Except she might not have known much about the sand people, for all she knew they were all psychopathic monsters not just normal (if violent) people, since she'd only spent a short time on Tatooine after living for so long on Naboo.

    Fun fact. Mace told Anakin to wait in the council chambers, despite there really being no reason for him to wait there. There’s a good chance that had Anakin waited, Mace was prepared to advocate for his promotion to master for ousting Palpatine.

    I have been a Star Wars fan for years now and somehow NEVER understood the implications of Obi-Wan telling Anakin that he loved him… You noticed that immediately and it took me watching this video after over a decade of being a Star Wars fan to notice that 😭😭😭 Obi-Wan loved Anakin despite the Jedi way. So heartbreaking. I feel like an idiot so thank you for opening my eyes to that moment

      There's nothing that says Jedi can't love--they just aren't supposed to form attachments. Lucas even had Anakin explain it to Padme while they were traveling on the transport ship to Naboo. Honestly the number of people who believe Lucas had Jedi be against love is just amazing.

      @@rikk319 i believe love to be a form of attachment. I think when Anakin was talking to Padme he was downplaying the rules of the Jedi to try and open her mind to them being in love with each other

      Yoda knew what was going to happen, he knew that Obi-Wan had good intentions pure intentions... he had hoped that Obi-Wans goodness would have been enough to bring Anakin through as the chosen one, that's partly why he didn't stop Anakin from becoming a jedi, but yet wise enough not to make him a master of the Jedi council.
      Yet Obi-Wans love is what "blinded" him from what Anakin would become influenced by the dark side...
      This is why Yoda says "I have failed"

      Lightsaber noises are probably my favorite sound effect in all of movies, and they are perfect in every single movie. Just wonderful. I think it's because, as a fantasy device that we can't compare to anything real, there's a lot of creative freedom available for the artists to make the noises correspond emotionally and thematically with the scenes they're in. I'm having a hard time explaining but if you watch the scenes you'll notice what I mean, they behave almost like part of the music sometimes.
