This guy is an inspiration. He isnt afraid to admit hes not that good at shreeding (neither am I) but he can make the most kickass riffs and have fun! Thats whats music all about!
I was completely blown away by his sound when I first heard adrenaline waaay back in 94, and have been a huge fan ever since. Great guitarist, great band.
Loving how down to earth Stef is...and also how he just has fun doing it! doesn't matter he can't shred for now, the dude just enjoys doing what he does!
This is great. I have an 8 string and really enjoy technical playing, but every day I still have to come back to guys like Carpenter who aren't being wild but still have great sound. Thanks for keeping me inspired!
Steph dose what a lot of guitarist and including myself forget to do. He has fun with the instrument. We get caught up in theory and wanting to play fast that we forget that playing guitar, like a painting a painting, starts as a blank canvas. It's up to the artist to be creative.
And that's why i really like this guy. He doesn't prove anyone to be some kick ass shredder, he plays simple powerchords and stuff like that, but he does it from his heart and for fun! That's the true meaning of playing guitar - do it for fun!
Yes sir, I keep my 8 string the same way Ebeadgbe, your low is is the bass octave so if you play a regular E shaped bar chord the lowest string is just the bass octave, the top 3 strips play like drop tuning, in a chord, but it still meshes with your high e string so you can play your own dualing melodies etc- It also makes for some really cool chords with lots of intervals
He's such a nice guy! :) It's cool to see that he has retained his "every day guy from across the street" kind of way despite being in a band that's famous all over the globe. And that Meshuggah is a big influence to him is even more awesome. They're the reason why he, a shitload of guitar lovers out there, and I myself want to pick one of these monstrosities up! :)
I jumped from 6 string... OVER 7-string... straight to an ESP LTD Stephen Carpenter SC-608 Baritone!!! It took some getting used to but it is an awesome guitar!!!
I installed a 3 way toggle switch on the metal plate on the SCT 607B between tone and volume. On/Battery Off Low Volume Bleed Trough/ Battery Off Kill Swith. Very cool easy modm
how can it possibly sound the right way as you would hear the power chord GBG for example? Oh.. forget it I figured it out, because it was either the 2nd, 7th-string or 3rd, 8th-string that was a half-note lower than the rest of the strings am I right? I kinda figured it out because my 6-string Epiphone G-310 was dropped down almost a hole octave. If it was a 7th string the tuning would look like this: GDGCFAD, instead it was the highest string that was missing on the 7th string:D
I love how Carpenter has never pushed himself to solo, but rather has made great riffs within his own limitations. That's more admirable than someone who's too dependent on a solo that becomes soulless and thinks that's what makes good sounding music. Also, Carpenter's riffs are more euphonious than lots of convoluted solos I've heard, at least to me.
I thought about the pickup being in the way as well. A friend of mine claimed it is in the way for him. However, I was paying attention to where my hand is when playin my ibanez RGA7 and where my hand rests for palm mutes, I pick right over the neck pickup, wich in this case wouldn't be there because it's in the middle...guess Steph has his hand in the same spot I do so the pickup in the middle will actually be out of the way for me/Steph
Yeah Wikipedia has all the shit that has been said so far. Another interview apparently has Chino saying that (at the time of the interview) that in a week when he got back from Crosses Tour he would start recording instead of what in another interview was said, that they would record in summer. So apparently the latest is that in Fall we will get the new album!
idk, but i dont really want stephen to put shredding in deftones songs. i fell in love wit them cause they were pure rhythm and the best chords. and he does use the top strings. PS: Stephen doesn't use the 8 string for an image factor, he's jst beast like that!!!!
love the band and the guitar. but I really gave them prompts on diamond eyes and the album after that. if meshuggah was such a big inspiration to Stephen I would like to hear there next album really get down. all in all great band
0:18 "DECIDE!" lol btw I heard there's a song on the new album called "Entombed" that stef plays some stuff inspired by Tosin Abasi. He said he actually taps on it. Stef is doing some new shit.
When I saw tem in the UK he didn't actually use the 8 string :( All those parts were played on bass, dunno if that was for some technical reason or whether they just like playing them that way? Still sounded great though!
He's got me sold now. I was about to buy my first 7 string. But now thinking why not just go straight to an 8. I mean an 8 can do everything a 7 can do, right?
i love how he speaks like he is your good neighbor i think good guy greg is actually stephen who shaved and got a haircut then hibernated during the process of writing and recording to grow hair again
"Why would you play less guitar when you could play more guitar?!"
- Stephen Carpenter
Best thing I've ever heard!
It's guys like this that give guitar players real hope. no show pony but a true riff master that has fun with guitar. I feel his joy:)
This guy is an inspiration. He isnt afraid to admit hes not that good at shreeding (neither am I) but he can make the most kickass riffs and have fun! Thats whats music all about!

Steph is just fucking great he doesn't give a shit he just has fun most guitarist are so full of themselves
he's the man. i remember getting into these guys when my brother would play them. he is still so chilll
I play guitar too, and I am not a shredder either. In fact, I don't like shredding, so I commend Carpenter for playing how he mother fucking wants!
his style of playing is still so unique! his use of open strings is just crazy and he writes some off the best riffs...fuckin' love deftones!
I like this guy, he's awesome, I can tell.
Having met and chilled with Stef, i can agree that he is quite possibly one of the coolest persons EVER.
This is great. I have an 8 string and really enjoy technical playing, but every day I still have to come back to guys like Carpenter who aren't being wild but still have great sound. Thanks for keeping me inspired!
Can't shred but can write some of the most awesome riffs known to man. That's what it's all about.
Hope ya made it, cause that show is right now!
not only do i love this guy and what he does, but im also a massive meshuggah fan so hearing him tlk up one of my favourite bands is legendary
Steph dose what a lot of guitarist and including myself forget to do. He has fun with the instrument. We get caught up in theory and wanting to play fast that we forget that playing guitar, like a painting a painting, starts as a blank canvas. It's up to the artist to be creative.
Im gonna use this quote from now on. Its just epic.
And that's why i really like this guy. He doesn't prove anyone to be some kick ass shredder, he plays simple powerchords and stuff like that, but he does it from his heart and for fun! That's the true meaning of playing guitar - do it for fun!
Its actually 33% more Steph . . .
hence the "nearly" in "nearly 30%"....
Man i respect this guys attitude. He just loves to play, and doesn't seem to have an ego at all. Like an 8 string non-shredding Paul Gilbert.
Yes sir, I keep my 8 string the same way Ebeadgbe, your low is is the bass octave so if you play a regular E shaped bar chord the lowest string is just the bass octave, the top 3 strips play like drop tuning, in a chord, but it still meshes with your high e string so you can play your own dualing melodies etc- It also makes for some really cool chords with lots of intervals
so cant wait....need another album and tour...A.S.A.P
i love this dude!
This guy is so chill...
i love this man
My favorite bands meshuggah and Deftones now after 5 years, I knew I picked the right bands
@904classiclegend the song is Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away) by Deftones
Great band, great guitarist.
I fuckin love this guys upbeat attitude.
*****Wait until Steph sees my 9 string guitar….
He'll probably crap himself.
lol meshuggah already went A# on spasm
arbitrary mention of the

The song is called "Beauty School" and it is from their Diamond Eyes Record. :)
i just got so fucking excited. cant wait for the new record
going to see them tonight. gonna be wicked fun.
What a rad dude. He so deserved that signature 8.
Be Quiet and Drive from their album Around The Fur
He's such a nice guy! :) It's cool to see that he has retained his "every day guy from across the street" kind of way despite being in a band that's famous all over the globe.
And that Meshuggah is a big influence to him is even more awesome. They're the reason why he, a shitload of guitar lovers out there, and I myself want to pick one of these monstrosities up! :)
I Love STEF!!!!!!
I jumped from 6 string... OVER 7-string... straight to an ESP LTD Stephen Carpenter SC-608 Baritone!!! It took some getting used to but it is an awesome guitar!!!

"we'll get out there and play our stuff for those who are interested" - Stephen Carpenter

Anthony Graham one of Deftones best songs too.
Love this dude!!!
love Steph
awesomest dude ever!
I have the SC607B & I love the shit out of it.
I installed a 3 way toggle switch on the metal plate on the SCT 607B between tone and volume. On/Battery Off Low Volume Bleed Trough/ Battery Off Kill Swith. Very cool easy modm
7-string models I know about from Ibanez:
Ibanez RGA7_BK
Ibanez RG7321_BK
how can it possibly sound the right way as you would hear the power chord GBG for example?
Oh.. forget it I figured it out, because it was either the 2nd, 7th-string or 3rd, 8th-string that was a half-note lower than the rest of the strings am I right?

Outro on Beware, Saturday Night Wrist album
Love stephen
I love how Carpenter has never pushed himself to solo, but rather has made great riffs within his own limitations. Also, Carpenter's riffs are more euphonious than lots of convoluted solos I've heard, at least to me.
It's called : Kimdracula from "Saturday night Wrist"
Here, enjoy it.
Thank you :)
did he just fucking said that a new deftones album is finished in summer of 2012 =D
you're the man , stephen .
I'm either going to get a ESP 7-string guitar or a Ibanez RG or RGA 7-string modell.

Don't listen to much Deftones, but this guy is fucking awesome
That's the bridge of Beware from "Saturday Night Wrist".
Love this guy
"And I don't practice". Steph is an awesome dude!
does he have ANY shredding videos on here?
Stef and my friend Javier got me into Meshuggah.
Ice Kold Killa Javier Reeves?
I wish he could put out 8 string tele model
WHEN IS ESP GONNA MAKE A STEPHEN CARPENTER SIGNATURE 8 AND 7 STRING TELE?
Awesome riffs > awesome shredding.
Can ANYONE PLEASE tell me the name of the very first song that plays at 0:00???
I mean shredding is cool but even though Carpenter doesn't shred, his musical pieces are amazing! More power to Deftones! \m/
I want that white Tele at 2:20!!!!
I liked this
I'm planing on getting a 7-string guitar, so I can get much lower without making the tuning unstable and have tune it back again :P
Always has been too. Same dude since we were kids.
What's the song at the beginning ?
Does anyone know the song that starts @1.00 ?
idk, but i dont really want stephen to put shredding in deftones songs. i fell in love wit them cause they were pure rhythm and the best chords. and he does use the top strings.

witch Deftones song this 0:01-0:04?.Thanks
Despacito.
where is this album you speak of?
I had to watch that back 5 or 6 times to make sure he said summer 2012 and not 2013 haha
what song is that at 1:07?
He's really funny!
i love how he speaks like he is your good neighbor
i think good guy greg is actually stephen who shaved and got a haircut
then hibernated during the process of writing and recording to grow hair again
Didn't catch on like he hoped in a year and not in 6 years thus far. But, that doesn't mean it won't! He is a cool guy. Talented too.
Kimdracula, off SNW. Awesome song.
+904classiclegend "Be Quiet and Drive" - Deftones :) GREAT song!
lol....Stephen loves the shredders too, believe me. Always has.
song at :20?
@SammyVengeance92 you're absolutely right dude!
Might get me his signature 7 string or maybe a ibanez 7 string dk yet
I dont even own a 7 string but that statement about why play less when you can play more sure does make a lot of sense lol
song at 2:53?
