Dude Stephen is very unique, without him deftones would not be the same, he has a very unique style and he changes that style in every album. I hope Chi gets better I wanna see him on the stage.
yea... he sounded so enthusiastic when he mentioned it. This was before Chi even had his accident. Pretty surreal stuff. And now the guys in the band dont even want to say that word.
Stef is without a doubt my favourite guitarist. I absolutely love listening to him talk about his guitars. And, if I might add, his signature 7-string, the ESP LTD SC-607b, is one of the best guitars I've ever played. First time I got the chance, I bought it, and it's everything I had dreamed of.
When I was 11, my best friends stepdad was their tour manager for Warped Tour 98, so I got to go hang on their bus all day when they played here. Steph also stayed in my buddys house for a couple weeks. He'd come over and swim in my pool, and me him and my buddy biked around our quiet street. I was only 11 so I didnt realize how fuckin cool that was. Wish it woulda been now! I remember sittin in their house once, and steph kept laughing and askin me "Why you trippin dude? Why you trippin?"
How the hell did he learn how to use such an elaborate effects setup? Do the guitar techs teach him and advise him on what to use? It seems so complex. Also, does anyone know how stef's 5-string bass is tuned?
Did anybody see what the pedals were? All I grabbed out of that were Boss BF3 Flanger, Boss Tremolo 2, Boss Hyperfuzz and a few Zvex pedals. This is what he was using until Eros when he expanded into Ax effects and pretty much ditched the pedals. Before White Pony he was all pedals. I found some pictures of the pedals he used in this video but the names are all covered up
3:25 - (From Deftones / Spinal Tap) When Steph starts talking about his (8 string) guitar with the two E. strings, and how he learned it from touring with LIMP and Wes B. how it's a six string but with two E strings - basically this was his "going to 11 on the amp" moment from Spinal Tap for me, lol
MIDI is very confusing at first, you just gotta keep at it man, it's A LOT of tweakin! But well worth it if you feel like spending the time. Obviously, Steph, gets such an original sound, and was one of the reasons I tried out MIDI rack mounted processors.
@spazemunky he said it in the video. Keeps the standard tuning also keeps the 7string feel. Back when I uses to play it was weird switching from 6 to 7 string with neck thickness and all.
Ok, so if I understand and have been figuring out their songs correctly (for the most part, anyway) Adrenaline is standard tuning, Around the Fur is tuned down a half-step then the low "E" string is tuned to C#, and White Pony is drop-C tuning. I know on self-titled Stephen used a 7-string so I really haven't bothered figuring out any songs from that album, SNW or Diamond Eyes (because he went to the 8-string on DE). Does anyone know what tuning is used on the last three albums?
@Lhavia009 he gets guitars from the esp custom shop i think, but the sc-607b is the closest guitar to that one. if you wanted one like that and want to save money, then you could get the sc-607b and get a refinish on it. esp custom shop guitars can take over a years wait and about $5000.
haha, he's joined the 8-string camp! lucky fella...would love to have one... read his rebel vs rebel with Meshuggah's Marten Hagstrom in Revolver some months back....cool to see Stephen loves Meshuggah too....Meshuggah! woohoo!
hahaha OMG..when i heard the song Diamond Eyes i was like damn this song sounds like the heavy rythmic tech of Meshuggah with the beauty and ambiatness off circa survive...now i see why
i know what you mean, but he does not use all 6 of those at the time. he can have the main one and the back up for the main. and have another one with a different tunning and a back up for it. while he is playing a song the roadie can change up the tunning of it and the back up
"just got this 14 string, tuned to drop z. the sparkles in the paint are actually blood diamonds shipped directly from Africa, and the tuners are made from platinum with a ruby accent on the high E"
4 might be enough for most people but he has 6 different tunings, which will be 7 different tunings when the new album comes out... Plus he needs a back up for each of those 6 or 7 guitars...
"for our new record that's coming out, eros"
dam... Rest in Piece Chi Cheng
Dude Stephen is very unique, without him deftones would not be the same, he has a very unique style and he changes that style in every album. I hope Chi gets better I wanna see him on the stage.
I got bad news
@@dylannequizia7103 right 😭😭
this didnt age well
This goes for all of them.
RIP Chi
He’s literally perfect for deftones unique yet a simple man.
How to play like Stephen Carpenter- "Just get a bunch of dope ass guitars"
TheMrAlexK00 all with EMGs and the same body wood/neck wood combos...
@@Samus5164 Fishmans now
@@FlyingV555 🤢. I still prefer EMGs. Can’t stand the Fishmans
@@patrickolivier1 wake up fishmans are fucking amazing
When he mentioned Eros... I felt that...
yea... he sounded so enthusiastic when he mentioned it. This was before Chi even had his accident. Pretty surreal stuff. And now the guys in the band dont even want to say that word.
that is definitely a joint in his hand. hahah he's an awesome guitar player and he is just a chill dude
This video makes me so glad to be a drummer.
4:57 "So gay but SO HAWT"! Gotta love Steph's sense of humor.
😂😂
"buncha dope ass guitars" well played sir well played

he talks about eros
this is like a cribs episode, but with guitars, OMG this guy has the most awesome guitars, more beautifuls than most of "shred guitars"

Why didn't he mention their self-titled album at all? I honestly have got to say that is one of my favorites.
My man from the Deftones, showing Tony Stewart some love with that orange #20

anyone notice the Louis Vuitton paint job on one of his ESPs?
MR B what about the Gucci one? Have you seen it? Looks phat
Why the hell did they cut out the part where he's talking about the self-titled album?
That sky blue ESP Stephen's got looks awesome
I wish I was so rich, I could afford to have 2 guitars for each tuning I use...
Thanks man very much!
happy bday big Stef!!
ONE BIG LOVE FOR STEPHE!!!
i love this guy
I love steph :')
He actually did this on "Needles and Pins" from the s/t album.

Fuggin sick.
he is so under rated!!!!! he's up there with frusciante, jack white, and zakk
Dam dude
i really want to meet Deftones soo bad!
I'm getting my schecter C-7 cuz i wanna learn their songs!
Cant wait till they come to AZ again
That's true, different sound, but they are both awesome! :)
MIDI is very confusing at first, you just gotta keep at it man, it's A LOT of tweakin! But well worth it if you feel like spending the time. Obviously, Steph, gets such an original sound, and was one of the reasons I tried out MIDI rack mounted processors.
Anyone know what he used to record Adrenaline? I fucking love his tone!
Jarl Meemorp ugh!! I'm trying to find out too!! :(
im diggin the tony stewart one lol
rock on stoner!! deftones rules!!
The Deftones make the World a better place.
@spazemunky he said it in the video. Keeps the standard tuning also keeps the 7string feel. Back when I uses to play it was weird switching from 6 to 7 string with neck thickness and all.
@StlyeFree Hey, thanks! I'm hoping this will come in handy. I hope to add a 7-string to the arsenal pretty soon.
He has quite the gear collection.
THAT SEVEN STRING TELE IS SICK!!!
Ok, so if I understand and have been figuring out their songs correctly (for the most part, anyway) Adrenaline is standard tuning, Around the Fur is tuned down a half-step then the low "E" string is tuned to C#, and White Pony is drop-C tuning. I fuckin love his guitars
cool!!!
@6XstringXsamurai the opening of engine no 9 is played on the low E string fyi.
He plays a bass guitar in "Needles and Pins" from the self-titled.
lots of dope ass guitars..
@Lhavia009 the cost depends on how customised the model is
around the fur is on standard tunning and D tunning on 6 string gtar
The first song is engine no. 9
yes
@ZenotheMetalWarrior Thanks for comment :)
An ESP Stef T7, only available in Japan and I heard Australia.
weird to hear him refer to the "Eros" album, now there's been two albums that have come out and Eros is still not out.
fucking awesome guitars!!!
hey that's Steph! Hey he plays in Deftones!!!!
@bravedwarf Nope, Adrenaline is in E standard tuning/Drop D, Deftones is in G# standard and Diamond Eyes is in F# standard 8 string.
a really mean-looking super nice guy!
@Lhavia009 he gets guitars from the esp custom shop i think, but the sc-607b is the closest guitar to that one. if you wanted one like that and want to save money, then you could get the sc-607b and get a refinish on it. esp custom shop guitars can take over a years wait and about $5000.
@Vinnygotnoodles from needles and pins and a few other songs, he plays bass through his guitar amp
Yeah, great video, but I would like it even more if Stephen played one or two of his guitars.
his pickup placement is insane
See that bass at the back when he's going through the guitars? Really want to know how he plays that on Needle and Pins.
haha, he's joined the 8-string camp! lucky fella...would love to have one...
read his rebel vs rebel with Meshuggah's Marten Hagstrom in Revolver some months back....cool to see Stephen loves Meshuggah too....Meshuggah! woohoo!
@TheTylerGeissler oh.my.god. that would be amazing!
hahaha OMG..when i heard the song Diamond Eyes i was like damn this song sounds like the heavy rythmic tech of Meshuggah with the beauty and ambiatness off circa survive...now i see why
i would die for that 7 string telecaster
I think he said he put the high e tuning on the bottom strings so for Adrenaline the tuning might be like EADGBee.
i know what you mean, but he does not use all 6 of those at the time. he can have the main one and the back up for the main. and have another one with a different tunning and a back up for it. while he is playing a song the roadie can change up the tunning of it and the back up
seems like a cool guy
"just got this 14 string, tuned to drop z. the sparkles in the paint are actually blood diamonds shipped directly from Africa, and the tuners are made from platinum with a ruby accent on the high E"
@ZomgNinjah Yeah he did, if you watch the You've seen the Butcher video you can clearly see the 8-string.
yes
he actually plays bass live for i-dont-remember-which song, 2 bass players at the same time
Chilliest guy on earth
'Damn is that for real!' Good ol Steph
now he has 8-strings tuned to C# and octave below the sixth string.
@duracelman alright thanks dude i appreciate it
I'm pretty sure he can do what he wants. He's pretty sucessful.
@Lhavia009 yea its on the esp website some of the guitars in this vid are in the gallery
Mine was too, so i bought one, fucking amazing
Those guitars.... I wantttttttttttttt NAO
if he used a floyd rose u know how amazing he would be with all those effects and preamp settings?
He uses the 8s in standard (for now)
woooo! nascar fan!!
There is a posibilty that exist a video with Stephen performacing Lotion?
I cant find a good tab about this song
Wow, this guy has AWESOME gear
4 might be enough for most people but he has 6 different tunings, which will be 7 different tunings when the new album comes out... Plus he needs a back up for each of those 6 or 7 guitars...
Yeah. Kinda dates itself with that... damn.
I met him!!!!
Some songs he does do that! If you look closely in the video you will see a bass he plays as a guitar on his rack.
I'm waiting for the day to add his sig 8 string baritone next to my sc-607b. Stephen fuckin rocks.
