Absolutely wonderful sense of humor. You can tell he's kidding when he talks about the lighted guitars & the fan, along with the EVH Phase 90. A lot of the humor is most likely due to his time with Frank Zappa.

wow, Steve Vai is such a cool guy. i sensed NO ego coming from him, he seemed like an every day guy that just happens to be famous. seriously, if some guy just bumped into him on the street, the guy would have NO idea that he is one of the best guitar players of all time, or even famous at all. I hope to meet him one day!

Wow, I never get enough of hearing well respected guitar players talking shop. I thought it was only me that will tune to an A chord then wonder why the D is not sounding very good. Also the 2 guitars are never the same statement is something I've learned over the years. I bought a Yamaha classical guitar and loved it so much I ordered a second one, they were not even close to sounding similar, or playing.

They do not on an electric at all, simple physics, the wood is far too thick to vibrate at all, how ever an acoustic guitar and neck vibrate completely and changing a mahogany neck for a rose wood neck will give more sustain and treble to the strings as the rose wood is far denser.

I always cringe when a well known guitarist says, he's designing an amp or a pedal or whatever. Like the most difficult work in designing music electronics is listening to how it sounds and wishing for specific alterations...

    • @bleensteen9331

Vai always says stuff like that. Basically a lot of what he says is intended to big himself up and often borderline untrue, it's a bit irritating but probably something he sees as necessary to maintain his image/mystique.

Fernandez sustainer you can buy the kit on musiciansfriend i believe..it's not just a pickup its a whole system you have to install. it basically works exactly opposite of a regular pickup. in a regular pickup the string vibrations are picked up by the pickup...the sustainer magnetically pushes the string into vibration...pretty wicked.

It also have to do with acoustics and the nature of the sound : if you have a sound source and place it somewhere in a room, it will always sound different depending of it, because of the sound reflections occurring on every surface near the source. This effect is called "Phantom Sources". The characteristics of the sound produced by these phantom sources depends of the surface's material, distance to the listener, to the original source, etc.
    regards!

@Liamzuid-- Vai used a Keeley modified Boss DS-1 distortion pedal (you see the orange pedal to the left of the MXR Van Halen Phaser pedal that he has going into Fender amp? That's the DS-1).
He used a TC-Electronics rack system before the floor model (if my memory serves me correct)...I don't know if he used TC Electronics distortion as well or not. But he definately used (uses) the Boss DS-1...and it was Keeley modified (at least at one point).
The mod adds warmth and tonal range.

It is Analogman modded (I believe), which makes it so it doesn't sound distorted on all sweeps by replacing the clipping stage with LEDs instead of diodes. This makes it sound more creamy and tube like on low gain settings. DEFINATELY worth it if you own a new DS-1.

@seankenny08 I'm a friend of "I'm Bryan, I play Bass" and got to hang out backstage a few shows on that tour, and what you've said is so very true. People who don't like or "get" Vai is that he's "playing the role" onstage, but also puts his all into that role. It's not about "playing the Rock Star", it's about giving the Fans all he can during those 2 hours onstage each night.
