I was up in stage with Penn about 20 years ago for the bullet trick. I tried grabbing his hand to pull it back to see if indeed he inserted the cartridge in the chamber. He resisted. We swapped a knowing look, and I went along with the rest of the act because he knew I had him.
Penn is right about the 12 magicians and 3 carnies thing. However, I'm not naïve or stupid enough to believe that it actually involved firing a live bullet at someone.
No doubt they opted for the safest variation possible. They have a strong emphasis on safety while also making it look like their tricks are extremely dangerous (the nail gun is a great examples and one of the funniest performance i ever watched).
@@TomFromMars To paraphrase Penn's words on the Bullet Catch: If you're actually firing bullets at each other, it ceases to be a trick. At that point, it's just a stunt (and a stupid one at that).
Sometimes a real gun gets between the props, sometimes a dumbass audience that gets asked to be the one to shot puts a real bullet to test the magician. In this particular case one of the fragments of the window went flying to the chest of the magician, piercing deeply.
It's not that it's unsafe, it's that the magicians did it the cheap way. Normally it's done with a musket and no ball loaded but if they don't have a musket they use a modern gun which are loaded with bullets which are aimed to the side so it misses. Its not always easy for amateurs to get a loan of a musket you see.

Is no one going to mention that Penn is talking to someone in a Planet of the Apes costume?
Turns out we haven't seen it all. None of us has
Dr. Zarus to he precise.
Not a big deal, the apes are in New York

No. I just saw it and decided you know what, why not, sure.

Chip Barnum and Bartleman Bailey, no?

This trick has killed 15 people...

It's even funnier when they all drive down to Tijuana... 'cause none of them honk the language.

At 3:47 you can see that he puts all face up cards in one spot. In the next shot you can see that he flips one part of the deck.
