I've gone nearly 42 years without hearing Teller speak until now. I feel like I've heard him speak before, but I count that as a fever dream... I grew up watching them in the 80's. To hear Teller truly speak after this long is so wild to me.
He's obviously a smart guy in general, but he's so knowledgable when it comes to magic it's amazing. There is another video on youtube just called Teller Speaks, and he does a trick and explains why it works. Magicians have this innate understanding of how human perception works, from years of manipulating it. Some scientists have actually been studying magic techniques to understand how our brains pay attention to things, and Teller has been part of that.
I once worked in the world of live TV and we had Penn and Teller on as guests. They were seated in the studio off camera and their segment was still a while away. I wore many hats at that job and my hat that day was as guest wrangler. Behind the scenes, Penn's actually quite quiet, soft-spoken, and answers questions in short, polite phrases. A question such as "Can I get you guys some water?" elicited a simple "Yes, please. Thank you," from Penn. But whereas Penn answers with a simple sentence, Teller, on the other hand, answers the same question with a paragraph. A simple "Yes, please" would've been fine but he just kept yammering on in response to my question. Now, I thought this was pretty cool because here I was as a fan of theirs and witnessing Teller not just talking, but talking directly to me, though after a few sentences, he included Penn in the conversation. As we're about to come out of commercial, though, an audible countdown could be heard throughout the studio and Teller was still flapping his gums. After politely telling them to quiet down without Teller responding, I had to firmly shush him--I believe I said, "Teller! Shut up!"--in a loud stage whisper. He immediately obliged. I tell this story because this video reminded me exactly of that. Teller's answer, while interesting, is a bit long-winded, and it tracks perfectly with our encounter. They both got their water, by the way, and I got some autographs.
I'll bet you never imagined you'd have to shush Teller! Thanks for sharing such a hilarious story. How many people within earshot had to stifle hysterical laughter the the "Go" cue hit? It kinda sounds like it could be a prank he likes to pull. I mean, ya gotta admit -- it's great theater, and Penn and Teller are all about great theater.

yeah dude, how did you comment? did you like log in from another account or like flew in from space or like only paused? How did you do it? I demand you tell us.
i remember being at one of their shows when I was young and I assumed he kept up his act even off stage, until he went home or was with friends/family. The show ended and I went to meet him, and he started talking to me and i was blown away lol. I looked at my dad and said “HE’S TALKING!!” he just looked at me and said “yeah he can do that.” This is the first time i’ve heard his voice since, and for some reason I remember it being completely different. I think the power of him not talking makes you forget what he sounds like after you actually hear him speak.
I also heard an interview he did on NPR where he talked about his trouble doing certain tricks that required hiding something in your mouth and talking. He decided to cut out the patter and really liked the change.
He showed up as a defense attorney on an episode of "Law & Order" just after "Home Improvement" ended. I remember covering his mouth on the TV with my hand.
And such a nice sounding voice, too. Also... 40 years together *in showbizz* ? That's impressive. Most duo's don't manage to do so under more standard conditions. Bands break up, couples divorce, but Penn and Teller just keep at it seemingly in great harmony.
this blew my mind, just the most genius explanation of one of the easiest to underestimate gimmicks in performance, magic, human interaction in general, silence is SO powerful when everyone else is a talker
This is honestly and seriously the first time I have ever heard him speak and funny enough the voice I have always heard inside my mind totally fits what I'm hearing lol.. Penn and Teller are my favorite magicians and I've been watching them for year's thanks to my grandfather.. "Magic is truly magical" my grandfather always said and it wasn't until I got older that I understood what he meant.. For me anyone who can fool an adult and make them a believer with their magic tricks just brings out the child they once were and that is truly magical/special. Hope that makes sense.. Anyways thanks so much for sharing this with us all. 🙏🍻
Both of them are genuinely brilliant, I think even tellers commitment to providing a raw magic without need for extraneous speech is truly admirable. A while back I decided to do an oral fast where I spoke as little as possible for a week, it kind of lingers as it allows you to observe rather than respond so readily and removes the ordinary pressure to speak without at least a formed idea and opinion about the subject. It’s mildly uncomfortable at first, even after i explained my intention people would ask a question and I would respond with a nod and that seemed to make people feel that I was withdrawn, despite my presence in the moment.

The difference being that ferb gets 1-2 lines in most episodes
What if when Teller spoke, he actually had Penn’s voice and Penn was actually the silent one all along but Teller was a ventriloquist
The biggest plot twist in human history
I'm too high for this comment it blew my mind
How about I do you one better? Both are master ventriloquists but they voice each other
Kiefer Baker in that case Penn doesn’t seem to be very good at it
We will never know.
I'll never look at Teller the same way again.
Same.
2:38 me either
I'll never hear him either
I've gone nearly 42 years without hearing Teller speak until now. I feel like I've heard him speak before, but I count that as a fever dream... I grew up watching them in the 80's. To hear Teller truly speak after this long is so wild to me.
I've heard teller's voice before in their masterclass ad. I never skip it
YES SAME ITS ALWAYS A SHOCK NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES U WATCH! 😂
Man Teller sounds so educated when he speaks. Wouldnt imagine that would be his voice.
He was a history teacher.

THIS IS ACTUALLY THE FIRST TIME I'VE HEARD HIM TALK. It feels weird.
He spoke obscenities on an episode of Tanked. Penn said that Teller doesn't speak, but when he does it's usually obscenities.
This is maybe the second or third time I have heard him.
If you watch Big Bang Theory, Teller speaks at 44:44 or 44:45 during the Season 11 finale. (Yes, I checked.)
He sounds very young too lol
He said a word on fear factor 😂
I love how Teller instinctively doesn’t talk while Penn is talking. Nodding, smiling…
Never in a million years I would've imagined *that* to be Teller's voice.
It's buttery smooth
I don’t know why but I expected him to be really high pitch lol
Especially next to Penns grating voice
Haha... Yeah me too
I once worked in the world of live TV and we had Penn and Teller on as guests.
Tellers a bore
I am surprised. I thought he was silent because he was quiet off stage.
@@DennisMSullivan (There -- I fixed yer handle for ya) When a performer consistently presents the same persona onstage, it's very easy to mistake the persona for their actual personality. I genuinely suspect his backstage chatterbox thang was also for effect. It made for a great story for the original commenter to have fun with, though, didn't it? I love the idea of having to tell Teller to put a sock in it. It would be exactly like telling Harpo Marx to shut up.
@@haplessasshole9615 Or Marcel Marceau, the pantomimist. I said I thought it would be a great gag, if Teller became a talk show host.

I don't like how perfect and preserved his voice is
He was a language teacher
I once met Teller at the Nashville airport and was one of the only times in my life I was actually starstruck. Didn't want to bother him but I just had to shake his hand to thank him for all he has done for magic and how special his work is. He was very kind and sincere despite my interrupting his day. Such a class act 👏
Didn't know teller had such a bold and fluent voice. If you asked me I was waiting to hear a squeaky voice don't ask why..

I've heard him talk before, it was some kind of documentary. In it he was shown in silhouette.

Penn's joke about Teller "streamlining" the razor act into needles is greatly under appreciated by the audience.
Or, they could possibly just have a decent sense of humor
Who else was expecting him to only answer with facial expressions and hand gestures?
@BigBrain Time Hey man. I'm sorry. I hope your life situation will improve soon.
I just want you to know that i'm neither angry at you nor do i judge you for the comment. Sometimes life is that shit we can almost taste it and we lash out in order so vent some of the frustration going on. It's okay. Really.
I know this is not you. Noone is that pathetic that they have to go out of their way to write hateful comments every chance they get.
But please keep in mind that my goal was to give people a passing smile with an easy joke. To implant the image of Teller just sitting there with that bright childlike wonder of his. According to the other 112 people i succeeded. Nobody really expected that. It's just a way to make people feel more involved and appreciated than a "Wouldn't it be funny..." would have.
The fact that such an easy joke went above your head is another clear indicator that you have a lot to deal with right now. So i really do hope going get's better for you soon.

I saw them at a live performance, at intermission I got to meet Teller, who was silent. I said that it was wonderful that he found such work as a mute. He replied, what makes you think I can't talk? To which I said, because up to now I've never heard you speak.
This was my first and only exchange with Teller.
Teller: For me, because I'm not like an overpowering personality...
*Penn casually sips his drink*
With how smart Penn is, I don't think he would have suffered an average partner.
So soft spoken, yet so amazing! I love this man!
Literally all these years I thought Teller would have this high pitched voice, and instead it's actually magical lol

When you see their show in Vegas, they sign autographs in the hall afterward and Teller talks to everyone who wants to talk to him.
Probably the coolest part of the show, and it's right where everyone walks past too.

I remember he was in a special on Houdini and he was talking but his face was covered in shadow. Kind of pointless since everyone knows what he looks like

His voice is never what I imagined it to be. I expected it to be much higher and goofy, yet here we are with a deep profound one.
This is the first time I heard Teller speak. He is quite articulate and has a very pleasant sounding voice.
i remember being at one of their shows when I was young and I assumed he kept up his act even off stage, until he went home or was with friends/family. The show ended and I went to meet him, and he started talking to me and i was blown away lol. I looked at my dad and said “HE’S TALKING!!” he just looked at me and said “yeah he can do that.” This is the first time i’ve heard his voice since, and for some reason I remember it being completely different. I still half expect this to end with "just kidding, it's a voice over."
Teller has such a calm relaxing voice. Just as I thought he would.
Wow his voice is amazing

That is the only bad thing about their act. They hide an amazing voice.
You can always tell how smart someone is from the way they speak. Teller is a genius.
I randomly asked RUclips "why teller doesn't speak" and it granted me with teller speaking... that's magic.
Best magic I ever seen, words came from Teller’s mouth.
Voice doesn’t match body
Jacob honestly tho I was thinking the same thing
Teller is actually 5 10'.. It seems like that because the Penn is 6 7' and always close to teller. it's an illusion
Jacob yes I agree but we only say that cause we've never heard him talk
Jacob Really? I think it matches perfectly. What did you think he would sound like?
Tell that to a short guy with a deep husky voice.
I couldn't hear anything Penn's shoes are too loud
This is actually the first time EVER I've heard him speak. He has a much deeper voice than I expected.
His reasoning for being silent is simply amazing. Deeper thinking behind it than ever assumed.
