....teller is a friggin master. He swipes the blade from Conan right when he starts spraying the shaving cream, then he holds the blade onto the knife blade, and plunges it into the grapefruit with that first stab.
i believe he applied an adhesive, and touches the blade with the can. you can see him pull it off the can and pocket it while penn gets conan to yell.

One of the things I've always loved about Penn & Teller is the huge respect Penn always gives his partner. He always talks about how Teller is superior at slight of hand. It's nice to see that honest respect given to his partner.

Fun fact: Teller is actually pretty much the same height as the average american male, even though he is famously short.
It's similar to how Alex Horne is known as Little Alex Horne, even though he's 6"2, because he's comedic partners with Greg Davies (who is 6"8). Greg looks like a generally normal sized man without any reference sizes, so anyone who stands next to him just looks tiny
I think hes 5'10 which is fairly tall. Hes just next to a 6'7 giant at all times haha

The Napoleon of Illusion
I'll never forget walking through Washington's house at like 14 years old and having to duck to get through all the doorframes. 1776 is less than 250 years ago and it was so bizarre to walk through this mythological man's home and feel like a giant at maybe 6 ft tall. Super bizarre how much humans have changed in such a brief span of time

Best part is them greeting everyone at the end of the show and thanking them for coming.
@@harryballz6740 I saw them in London four years ago. After the show, they ran out in front of the theater and gave autographs and took photos with every single audience member who wanted it. They do it after every show. They stand there for two hours, which is longer than their actual show, until everyone gets a chance to meet them. They only leave once everyone is gone. They don't have to do it. But they're legends.

This is a masterclass in sleight of hand. The sheer artistry pulled off by Penn and Teller is nothing short of amazing. How Penn is able to keep your (and evidently Conan's) full attention while Teller performs some of the most incredible and slick sleights is mind blowing. I was able to meet them in 2015 after a show in Canada. They are the nicest, most inviting performers. Such a thrill watching them on stage. The way these two play off of each other and their chemistry, every show, easily explains why they are still so well renowned to this day.
Penn and Teller are some of the best illusionists of our time. The dynamic of the talkative and silent one is what allows them to maximise each other's strengths and play off of each other so well. While Penn is an amazing sleight of hands artist, Teller is the true master at it and while Teller is quite funny when he talks ( which is admitedly very rarely) Penn is a master of misdirection and he uses his larger than life physique and personna to distract the audience while Teller performs the tricks. There's a reason why they've had such long and illustrious careers to the point where they often break rules of magic just to show off their skills and still are able to not only impress, but also still surprise and trick their audience. I talked with them 20ish years ago on a trip to Vegas and just like you said, they are incredible people.

@@publicmail2 parent is making a reference to the classic Penn & Teller bit where they do cup & balls with clear plastic cups. Parent is correct that it is a classic example of misdirection, as is the juggling of the grapefruit a moment later. The signed blade is in Tellers' hand. It needs to be so that he can load it into the grapefruit with that first stab of the knife. Conan does not need to be shown that it is "OK to squeeze", because...of course it is. It's a magic trick. Slicing a talkshow host is a bad move professionally for magicians.
Penn and Teller are still the classiest magicians I have ever seen!
Love it when Conan let's other people take the wheel and he just rolls with it and makes it funnier.

Penn, Teller, and Conan are just wonderful together. They just allow each other to shine.
The trick was done well. Using razors throws the people off with the "danger" element as a distraction psychologically and plus the are very responsive to magnets. Shaving cream was also whimsical as a humorous antidote that keeps the crowd happy and easy. Genius...
Penn and Teller give away half their tricks, outright tell you the rest is made up, and yet they still manage to blow your mind.
saw them live in vegas, it was mind blowing. best non-music show i ever saw live.
Their act is genius. They certainly got some inspiration from The Amazing Randy, who was also very fond of the skepticism and "magic isn't real" sort of thing

5:21 you can see teller holding the razor blade with his thumb against the knife when he makes the first cut, he lets go of the razor blade and puts it in place before turning it at an angle where the making the final cut would expose it, pretty cool
Yeah and the magnetic shaving cream bottle used to get it out of Conan's hand and into Teller's
magnetic or he just grabs it with his finger against the bottle, it was close enough. Knowing P&T that's probably how they did it, it's easier
@Some Person he shook with his left because he was holding another razor blade to do the trick where he pulled out the blade from Conan's ear at the end.
@@lukeyluke9977 yeah, he had the blade against the knife to put it into the fruit, at the end he shakes with his left cause his right is reaching in his pocket for the last razor blade for the final out of the ear bit, Conan kind of ruined it when he turned to shake Teller's hand by turning the attention to him as Penn was misdirecting xD though the coin (or razor) out of the ear was more of a gag than a trick, everyone knows that one anyway so it doesn't matter

The most impressive part of this trick is the steal from Conan’s hand. It’s incredible!
Hence, the blade was placed near the edge of the palm. to make it easier.
The can had a magnet on it, the blade flicks across to the back side of the can in a blink of an eye where it is palmed later
@@MartinDolan Exactly. There are two very very very very very slightly unnatural movements of Teller. In the beginning he's holding the can too far over the hand for spraying. That's when he uses the magnet to pick the blade. After spraying he puts the can into his left hand, grabs the blade with his right hand and puts it into his jacket.
But even if you know how the trick works after watching it half a dozen times, it's great, creative and artistic. The illusion works, and it is even more impressive when you see how nearly seamless the manipulation fits into the natural movement of the hands.

That was some seriously smooth misdirection from Teller, he insert the razor blade by stabbing the grapefruit first, then cuts at a different angle. He makes it look so natural.

For those wondering how he got the blade out, the can is magnetic. If you notice teller passes the can over the blade before he starts spraying it. Then watch his hand and the can. After which he loads the blade and when he turns over the grapefruit he's rolling it back to insert the blade into it moments before he cuts it open.

On a boardwalk in NJ I saw a street magician produce a tightly rolled 20 that was signed in this manner from an orange he cut into and to this day I think it was the most incredible trick I've ever seen in person

He pushed the razor blade into the orange when he first cut it with a knife. You can see him holding it with his thumb against the knife. That’s why he turned the orange around after the initial cut.
That is what makes it so great. He did the move right in the open, and most people probably did not see it. 😎
First cut put the razor into the grapefruit, 2nd cut pushed it down and then he flipped the fruit around to actually cut it in half to "reveal" the razorblade.

Teller's can of shaving cream has a small neo magnet on it that picks up the blade from Conan's palm. You can see Teller slip the blade off the side of the can and pocket it during Penn's misdirection.
