“He can’t get a word in” was phenomenal. Rodney dangerfield had a bit where he said “i haven’t spoken to my wife in years. I didn’t want to interrupt her” 😂😂Would love to know if Andy took inspiration from Rodney for that one!
I can see why Conan wanted Andy out there, especially at the start. Conan is already a comedy genius but just in case there was even a chance of dead air, Andy fills it in. It's a recipe for success
They talked about that on one of the podcasts, like they clicked so fast when they first met it just seemed natural. And then after Andy left in the early 2000s, the bit of Conan and Max having zero chemistry grew out of him not having Andy there to help him.
No better instincts on display than with Mel Brooks. Andy held off as long as he could to not step on Mel’s bit, then he went just a bit too long vamping it. So before it died Andy put the button on it.
Conan was recently on the Smartless podcast and he said how in the early days Andy basically got him through it…knowing he was up there with him. He said he found it comforting.
Perfect roleplayer. It's underappreciated not to take the bit too far. Craig Ferguson's sideman (as Geoff the robot) was also very good at this, it really helps the quality of the show.
Mel Brooks' comeback was the only one up to par I think. There's also a clip of Andy describing the late Norm MacDonald's style of humor as "somebody telling you they gotta show you something, then taking you on a four mile hike to see a dog turd" which is perfect, and you can tell Norm loved it.

Not going to lie, I was not a fan when Andy joined Conan but, definitely made me a fan over the years. Andy’s one liners are so good yet so unpredictable, which is what makes him great. The “sometimes you can see memories” sting is just genius 😂
